1Searching For Dark Matter Annihilation In The Smith High-Velocity Cloud
By Alex Drlica-Wagner, German A. Gomez-Vargas, John W. Hewitt, Tim Linden and Luigi Tibaldo
Recent observations suggest that some high-velocity clouds may be confined by massive dark matter halos. In particular, the proximity and proposed dark matter content of the Smith Cloud make it a tempting target for the indirect detection of dark matter annihilation. We argue that the Smith Cloud may be a better target than some Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies and use gamma-ray observations from the Fermi Large Area Telescope to search for a dark matter annihilation signal. No significant gamma-ray excess is found coincident with the Smith Cloud, and we set strong limits on the dark matter annihilation cross section assuming a spatially-extended dark matter profile consistent with dynamical modeling of the Smith Cloud. Notably, these limits exclude the canonical thermal relic cross section ($\sim 3\times10^{-26}{\rm cm}^{3}{\rm s}^{-1}$) for dark matter masses $\lesssim 30$ GeV annihilating via the $b \bar b$ or $\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$ channels for certain assumptions of the dark matter density profile; however, uncertainties in the dark matter content of the Smith Cloud may significantly weaken these constraints.

2Searching For Dark Matter Halos In The Suprime-Cam 2 Sq Deg Field
By S. Miyazaki, T. Hamana, K. Shimasaku, H. Furusawa, M. Doi, M. Hamabe, K. Imi, M. Kimura, Y. Komiyama, F. Nakata, N. Okada, S. Okamura, M. Ouchi, M. Sekiguchi, M. Yagi and N. Yasuda
We report the first result of weak gravitational lensing survey on a 2.1 sq deg Rc-band image taken with a wide field camera (Suprime-Cam) on the prime focus of 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. The weak lensing mass reconstruction is applied to the data to search for dark matter halos of cluster scale; M >= 10^14 solar mass. The reconstructed convergence field is divided by 1-sigma noise to obtain the signal-to-noise ratio map (S/N-map) of the detection. Local maxima and minima are searched on the S/N-map and the probability distribution function (PDF) of the peaks are created to compare with model predictions. We found excess over noise PDF created from the randomized realization on both positive and negative sides. Negative peaks imply the presence of voids in the dark matter distribution and this is the first report of the detection. Positive peaks, on the other hand, represent the dark matter halos and the number count of the halos on the 2.1 sq deg image is 4.9 +- 2.3 for S/N > 5 where the Gaussian smoothing radius of the convergence map is 1'. The result is consistent with the prediction assuming the Press-Schechter mass function and the NFW halo profile under the cluster normalized CDM cosmology. Although the present statistics is not enough due to the limited field of view, this work demonstrates that dark matter halo count via weak lensing is a promising way to test the paradigm of structure formation and cosmological model.

3Searching For Dark Matter In X-rays: How Not To Check The Dark Matter Origin Of A Spectral Feature
By Alexander Kusenko and Michael Loewenstein
In a recent preprint entitled "Searching for dark matter in X-rays: how to check the dark matter origin of a spectral feature" [arXiv:1001.0644v1], the authors have claimed that some archival X-ray data could be used to rule out dark matter in the form of 5-keV sterile neutrinos at the level of 20 sigma. Unfortunately, the limit was derived incorrectly. We point out the shortcomings of this analysis and show that the tentative detection of a spectral feature consistent with a 5-keV sterile neutrino is not in contradiction with existing limits. Future observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies will test this hypothesis.

4Searching For Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter Signatures In The LAT Electron Flux
By A. A. Moiseev, E. A. Baltz, J. F. Ormes and L. G. Titarchuk
We present here the prospects for the GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT) detection of the signature of the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle (LKP). It decays by direct annihilation into electron-positron pairs that may be detectable in the high energy electron flux. We discuss the LAT capability for detecting the high energy (20 GeV - ~1 TeV) cosmic ray electron flux and we analyze the LAT sensitivity to detect LKP-produced electrons for various particle masses. We include an analysis of the diffusive propagation of the electrons in the galaxy.

6Searching Dark-matter Halos In The GaBoDS Survey
By M. Maturi, M. Schirmer, M. Meneghetti, M. Bartelmann and L. Moscardini
We apply the linear filter for the weak-lensing signal of dark-matter halos developed in Maturi et al. (2005) to the cosmic-shear data extracted from the Garching-Bonn-Deep-Survey (GaBoDS). We wish to search for dark-matter halos through weak-lensing signatures which are significantly above the random and systematic noise level caused by intervening large-scale structures. We employ a linear matched filter which maximises the signal-to-noise ratio by minimising the number of spurious detections caused by the superposition of large-scale structures (LSS). This is achieved by suppressing those spatial frequencies dominated by the LSS contamination. We confirm the improved stability and reliability of the detections achieved with our new filter compared to the commonly-used aperture mass (Schneider, 1996; Schneider et al., 1998) and to the aperture mass based on the shear profile expected for NFW haloes (see e.g. Schirmer et al., 2004; Hennawi & Spergel, 2005). Schirmer et al.~(2006) achieved results comparable to our filter, but probably only because of the low average redshift of the background sources in GaBoDS, which keeps the LSS contamination low. For deeper data, the difference will be more important, as shown by Maturi et al. (2005). We detect fourteen halos on about eighteen square degrees selected from the survey. Five are known clusters, two are associated with over-densities of galaxies visible in the GaBoDS image, and seven have no known optical or X-ray counterparts.

7Searching In The Dark: The Dark Mass Content Of The Milky Way Globular Clusters NGC288 And NGC6218
By A. Sollima, F. R. Ferraro, L. Lovisi, F. Contenta, E. Vesperini, L. Origlia, E. Lapenna, B. Lanzoni, A. Mucciarelli, E. Dalessandro and C. Pallanca
We present an observational estimate of the fraction and distribution of dark mass in the innermost region of the two Galactic globular clusters NGC 6218 (M12) and NGC 288. Such an assessment has been made by comparing the dynamical and luminous mass profiles derived from an accurate analysis of the most extensive spectroscopic and photometric surveys performed on these stellar systems. We find that non-luminous matter constitutes more than 60% of the total mass in the region probed by our data (R

8Searching For Dark Matter Signals In The Left-Right Symmetric Gauge Model With CP Symmetry
By Wan-Lei Guo, Yue-Liang Wu and Yu-Feng Zhou
We investigate singlet scalar dark matter (DM) candidate in a left-right symmetric gauge model with two Higgs bidoublets (2HBDM) in which the stabilization of the DM particle is induced by the discrete symmetries P and CP. According to the observed DM abundance, we predict the DM direct and indirect detection cross sections for the DM mass range from 10 GeV to 500 GeV. We show that the DM indirect detection cross section is not sensitive to the light Higgs mixing and Yukawa couplings except the resonance regions. The predicted spin-independent DM-nucleon elastic scattering cross section is found to be significantly dependent on the above two factors. Our results show that the future DM direct search experiments can cover the most parts of the allowed parameter space. The PAMELA antiproton data can only exclude two very narrow regions in the 2HBDM. It is very difficult to detect the DM direct or indirect signals in the resonance regions due to the Breit-Wigner resonance effect.

9Searching For Dark Clouds In The Outer Galactic Plane I -- A Statistical Approach For Identifying Extended Red(dened) Regions In 2MASS
By Wilfred W. F. Frieswijk and Russell F. Shipman
[Abridged] Though the exact role of infrared dark clouds in the formation process is still somewhat unclear, they seem to provide useful laboratories to study the very early stages of clustered star formation. Infrared dark clouds have been identified predominantly toward the bright inner parts of the galactic plane. The low background emission makes it more difficult to identify similar objects in mid-infrared absorption in the outer parts. This is unfortunate, because the outer Galaxy represents the only nearby region where we can study effects of different (external) conditions on the star formation process. The aim of this paper is to identify extended red regions in the outer galactic plane based on reddening of stars in the near-infrared. We argue that these regions appear reddened mainly due to extinction caused by molecular clouds and young stellar objects. The work presented here is used as a basis for identifying star forming regions and in particular the very early stages. We use the Mann-Whitney U-test, in combination with a friends-of-friends algorithm, to identify extended reddened regions in the 2MASS all-sky JHK survey. We process the data on a regular grid using two different resolutions, 60" and 90". The two resolutions have been chosen because the stellar surface density varies between the crowded spiral arm regions and the sparsely populated galactic anti-center region. We identify 1320 extended red regions at the higher resolution and 1589 at the lower resolution run. The majority of regions are associated with major molecular cloud complexes, supporting our hypothesis that the reddening is mostly due to foreground clouds and embedded objects.

10Searching For Decaying Dark Matter In Deep XMM-Newton Observation Of The Draco Dwarf Spheroidal
By Oleg Ruchayskiy, Alexey Boyarsky, Dmytro Iakubovskyi, Esra Bulbul, Dominique Eckert, Jeroen Franse, Denys Malyshev, Maxim Markevitch and Andrii Neronov
We present results of a search for the 3.5 keV emission line in our recent very long (~ 1.4 Ms) XMM-Newton observation of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The astrophysical X-ray emission from such dark matter-dominated galaxies is faint, thus they provide a test for the dark matter origin of the 3.5 keV line previously detected in other massive, but X-ray bright objects, such as galaxies and galaxy clusters. We do not detect a statistically significant emission line from Draco; this constrains the lifetime of a decaying dark matter particle to tau > (7-9) x 10^27 s at 95% CL (combining all three XMM-Newton cameras; the interval corresponds to the uncertainty of the dark matter column density in the direction of Draco). The PN camera, which has the highest sensitivity of the three, does show a positive spectral residual (above the carefully modeled continuum) at E = 3.54 +/- 0.06 keV with a 2.3 sigma significance. The two MOS cameras show less-significant or no positive deviations, consistently within 1 sigma with PN. Our Draco limit on tau is consistent with previous detections in the stacked galaxy clusters, M31 and the Galactic Center within their 1-2 sigma uncertainties, but is inconsistent with the high signal from the core of the Perseus cluster (which has itself been inconsistent with the rest of the detections). We conclude that this Draco observation does not exclude the dark matter interpretation of the 3.5 keV line in those objects.

We explored several viable scenarios of how LAT might observe DM, when the spectral feature is predicted to be observed in the HE electron flux It has been demonstrated elsewhere that LAT will be capable to detect HE electrons flux in energy range from 20 GeV to - 1 TeV with 520% energy resolution and good statistics If there is a DM-caused feature in the HE electron flux (in the range 20 GeV - 1 TeV), LAT will be the best current instrument to observe it!

12Searching For Dark Matter In X-rays: How To Check The Dark Matter Origin Of A Spectral Feature
By Alexey Boyarsky, Oleg Ruchayskiy, Dmytro Iakubovskyi, Matthew G. Walker, Signe Riemer-Sorensen and Steen H. Hansen
A signal from decaying dark matter (DM) can be unambiguously distinguished from spectral features of astrophysical or instrumental origin by studying its spatial distribution. We demonstrate this approach by examining the recent claim of 0912.0552 regarding the possible DM origin of the 2.5 keV line in Chandra observations of the Milky Way satellite known as Willman 1. Our conservative strategy is to adopt a relatively large dark mass for Willman 1 and relatively small dark masses for the comparison objects. We analyze archival observations by XMM-Newton of M31 and Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) and Chandra observations of Sculptor dSph. By performing a conservative analysis of X-ray spectra, we show the absence of a DM decay line with parameters consistent with those of 0912.0552. For M31, the observations of the regions between 10 and 20 kpc from the center, where the uncertainties in the DM distribution are minimal, make a strong exclusion at the level above 10sigma. The minimal estimate for the amount of DM in the central 40 kpc of M31 is provided by the model of 0912.4133, assuming the stellar disk's mass to light ratio ~8 and almost constant DM density within a core of 28 kpc. Even in this case one gets an exclusion at 5.7sigma from central region of M31 whereas modeling all processed data from M31 and Fornax produces more than 14sigma exclusion. Therefore, despite possible systematic uncertainties, we exclude the possibility that the spectral feature at ~2.5 keV found in 0912.0552 is a DM decay line. We conclude, however, that the search for DM decay line, although demanding prolonged observations of well-studied dSphs, M31 outskirts and other similar objects, is rather promising, as the nature of a possible signal can be checked. An (expected) non-observation of a DM decay signal in the planned observations of Willman 1 should not discourage further dedicated observations.

14Searching For Dark Matter In The CMB: A Compact Parameterization Of Energy Injection From New Physics
By Douglas P. Finkbeiner, Silvia Galli, Tongyan Lin and Tracy R. Slatyer
High-precision measurements of the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation have been previously employed to set robust constraints on dark matter annihilation during recombination. In this work we improve and generalize these constraints to apply to energy deposition during the recombination era with arbitrary redshift dependence. Our approach also provides more rigorous and model-independent bounds on dark matter annihilation and decay scenarios. We employ principal component analysis to identify a basis of weighting functions for the energy deposition. The coefficients of these weighting functions parameterize any energy deposition model and can be constrained directly by experiment. For generic energy deposition histories that are currently allowed by WMAP7 data, up to 3 principal component coefficients are measurable by Planck and up to 5 coefficients are measurable by an ideal cosmic variance limited experiment. For WIMP dark matter, our analysis demonstrates that the effect on the CMB is described well by a single (normalization) parameter and a "universal" redshift dependence for the energy deposition history. We give WMAP 7 constraints on both generic energy deposition histories and the universal WIMP case.

16Extended Carbon Line Emission In The Galaxy: Searching For Dark Molecular Gas Along The G328 Sightline
By Michael G. Burton, Michael C. B. Ashley, Catherine Braiding, Matthew Freeman, Craig Kulesa, Mark G. Wolfire, David J. Hollenbach, Gavin Rowell and James Lau
We present spectral data cubes of the [CI] 809GHz, 12CO 115GHz, 13CO 110GHz and HI 1.4GHz line emission from an 1 square degree region along the l = 328{\deg} (G328) sightline in the Galactic Plane. Emission arises principally from gas in three spiral arm crossings along the sight line. The distribution of the emission in the CO and [CI] lines is found to be similar, with the [CI] slightly more extended, and both are enveloped in extensive HI. Spectral line ratios per voxel in the data cubes are found to be similar across the entire extent of the Galaxy. However, towards the edges of the molecular clouds the [CI]/13CO and 12CO/13CO line ratios rise by ~50%, and the [CI]/HI ratio falls by ~10$%. We attribute this to these sightlines passing predominantly through the surfaces of photodissociation regions (PDRs), where the carbon is found mainly as C or C+, while the H2 is mostly molecular, and the proportion of atomic gas also increases. We undertake modelling of the PDR emission from low density molecular clouds excited by average interstellar radiation fields and cosmic-ray ionization to quantify this comparison, finding that depletion of sulfur and reduced PAH abundance is needed to match line fluxes and ratios. Roughly one-third of the molecular gas along the sightline is found to be associated with this surface region, where the carbon is largely not to be found in CO. ~10% of the atomic hydrogen along the sightline is cold gas within PDRs.

18Searching For Dark Matter Subhalos In The Fermi-LAT Second Source Catalog
By Alexander V. Belikov, Dan Hooper and Matthew R. Buckley
The dark matter halo of the Milky Way is expected to contain an abundance of smaller subhalos. These subhalos can be dense and produce potentially observable fluxes of gamma rays. In this paper, we search for dark matter subhalo candidates among the sources in the Fermi-LAT Second Source Catalog which are not currently identified or associated with counterparts at other wavelengths. Of the nine high-significance, high-latitude (|b|>60 degrees), non-variable, unidentified sources contained in this catalog, only one or two are compatible with the spectrum of a dark matter particle heavier than approximately 50-100 GeV. The majority of these nine sources, however, feature a spectrum that is compatible with that predicted from a lighter (~5-40 GeV) dark matter particle. This population is consistent with the number of observable subhalos predicted for a dark matter candidate in this mass range and with an annihilation cross section of a simple thermal relic (sigma v~3x10^{-26} cm^3/s). Observations in the direction of these sources at other wavelengths will be necessary to either reveal their astrophysical nature (as blazars or other active galactic nuclei, for example), or to further support the possibility that they are dark matter subhalos by failing to detect any non-gamma ray counterpart.

19Sensitivity To Dark Energy Candidates By Searching For Four-wave Mixing Of High-intensity Lasers In The Vacuum
By Kensuke Homma
Theoretical challenges to understand Dark Matter and Dark Energy suggest the existence of low-mass and weakly coupling fields in the universe. The quasi-parallel photon-photon collision system (QPS) can provide chances to probe the resonant production of these light dark fields and the induced decay by the coherent nature of laser fields simultaneously. By focusing high-intensity lasers with different colors in the vacuum, new colors emerge as the signature of the interaction. Because four photons in the initial and final states interplay via the dark field exchange, this process is analogous to four-wave mixing in quantum optics, where the frequency sum and difference among the incident three waves generate the fourth wave with a new frequency via the nonlinear property of crystals. The interaction rate of the four-wave mixing process has the cubic dependence on the intensity of each wave. Therefore, if high-intensity laser fields are given, the sensitivity to the weakly coupling of dark fields to photons rapidly increases over the wide mass range below sub-eV. Based on the experimentally measurable photon energies and the linear polarization states, we formulate the relation between the accessible mass-coupling domains and the high-intensity laser parameters, where the effects of the finite spectrum width of pulse lasers are taken into account. The expected sensitivity suggests that we have a potential to explore interactions at the Super-Planckian coupling strength in the sub-eV mass range, if the cutting-edge laser technologies are properly combined.

20Searching For Singlino-Higgsino Dark Matter In The NMSSM
By Qian-Fei Xiang, Xiao-Jun Bi, Peng-Fei Yin and Zhao-Huan Yu
We study a simplified scenario in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with a split electroweak spectrum, in which only the singlino and higgsinos are light and other superpartners are decoupled. Serving as a dark matter candidate, a singlino-dominated neutralino $\tilde{\chi}_1^0$ should have either resonant annihilation effects or sizable higgsino components to satisfy the observed relic abundance. The sensitivities of LHC searches and dark matter detection experiments are investigated. With an integrated luminosity of $30 (300) \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, $3l + E_\mathrm{T} \!\!\!\!\!\!\!/ \;\;\;$and $2l + E_\mathrm{T} \!\!\!\!\!\!\!/ \;\;\;$ searches at the 13 (14) TeV LHC are expected to reach up to $m_{\tilde{\chi}_1^0}\sim 150 (230) \mathrm{GeV}$ and $m_{\tilde{\chi}_2^0,\tilde{\chi}_1^{\pm}}\sim 320 (480) \mathrm{GeV}$. Near future dark matter direct and indirect detection experiments can cover some parameter regions where collider searches lose their sensitivities.

1Danse Russe
By William Carlos Williams
Williams spent his life as a doctor practicing pediatric medicine in northern New Jersey, a few miles west of New York City. During the work day, between seeing patients, he often dashed off poems on the backs of blank prescription pads that he kept in his pocket. This particular poem was written in just such a spontaneous way, after seeing the Russian Ballet perform in Manhattan. Each of the 16 readers in this collection took the challenge to make the same kind of leap - reading it spontaneously.<br />(Summary by Alan Davis-Drake)

2Velveteen Rabbit
By Margery Williams

<em>"What is REAL?"</em> asked the Rabbit one day... <br /><br />Written in 1922, <em>The Velveteen Rabbit</em>, or, <em>How Toys Become Real</em> is the tale of a sweet unassuming toy rabbit who questions what it is to live and to love. It was the first children's title written by Margery Williams (1881 - 1944), who had previously created only for adults. This story eclipsed all others, to become her most famous work, and an ever adored classic for all ages. (Summary written by Marlo Dianne)<br /><br /><em>"It was by a sort of accident that The Velveteen Rabbit became the beginning of all the stories I have written since…By thinking about toys and remembering toys, they suddenly become very much alive. Toys I had loved as a little girl--my almost forgotten Tubby, who was the rabbit, and Old Dobbin, the Skin Horse, and the toys my children had loved."</em> -- Margery Williams

4Selected Early Poems of William Carlos Williams
By William Carlos Williams
Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, a community near the city of Paterson. His father was an English immigrant, and his mother was born in Puerto Rico. He attended public school in Rutherford until 1897, then was sent to study at Château de Lancy near Geneva, Switzerland, the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France, for two years and Horace Mann School in New York City. Then, in 1902, he entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his time at Penn, Williams befriended Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle (best known as H.D.) and the painter Charles Demuth. These friendships supported his growing passion for poetry. He received his M.D. in 1906 and spent the next four years in internships in New York City and in travel and postgraduate studies abroad (e.g., at the University of Leipzig where he studied pediatrics). He returned to Rutherford in 1910 and began his medical practice, which lasted until 1951. Ironically, most of his patients knew little if anything of his writings; instead they viewed him as a doctor who helped deliver over 2,000 of their children into the world. <br/>(From Wikipedia)

But there is another Lincoln as dear to the common people--the Lincoln of happy quotations, the speaker of household words. Instead of the erect, impressive, penetrative platform orator we see a long, gaunt figure, divided between two chairs for comfort, the head bent forward, smiling broadly, the lips curved in laughter, the deep eyes irradiating their caves of wisdom; the story-telling Lincoln, enjoying the enjoyment he gave to others. (from the preface of the book) This is so big it took two pages on Internet Archive to store it all (Part 1 has 01 - 255 and part 2 has 256-391).<p>

9American Big-Game Hunting
By George S. Anderson, Winthrop Chanler, Oscar F. C. Crocker, Walter Bourchier Devereux, George Bird Grinnell, Arnold Hague, W. D. Pickett, Archibald Rogers, Theodore Roosevelt, Bronson Rumsey, Dean Sage, Roger D. Williams and Owen Wister

The first book published by The Boone and Crockett Club founded by Theodore Roosevelt and George Grinnell, who declared in their Editors Note: "Hunting big game in the wilderness is, above all things, a sport for a vigorous and masterful people. The rifle-bearing hunter, whether he goes on foot or on horseback, whether he voyages in a canoe or travels with a dog-sled, must be sound of body and firm of mind, and must possess energy, resolution, manliness, self-reliance, and capacity for hardy self-help. In short, the big-game hunter must possess qualities without which no race can do its life-work well; and these are the very qualities which it is the purpose of this Club, so far as may be, to develop and foster."<br /><br /> A bit outdated as to the equipment they used, this book is nevertheless an intense look at the west in early days, and at the beginnings of the conservationist movement in America. Each chapter focuses on a different animal, from buffalo, mountain goat, elk, pronghorn sheep, grizzlies, etc., indigenous peoples, different areas like the Rockies and Yellowstone, and it still captures the essence of the spirit of the hunt.<br /><br /> The book ends with a list of the club's original 100 members, a veritable Who's Who of Generals, Colonels, Doctors, Senators and Representatives, amongst them that most illustrious Gen'l William T. Sherman. ( ~ Michele Fry, read by LibriVox Volunteers)

11Planet of the Gods
By Robert Moore Williams

Far, far in the future Earth has achieved real peace and is sending out interstellar expeditions, not to conquer, but to explore. The third such expedition, has made it to the Vega system and discovered to everyone's amazement, not only a solar system but two worlds circling the Vega sun that seem to have atmosphere and water. And apparently intelligent life is there as well because something tries, and almost succeeds, in blasting the expedition ship out of space before it can even get close to either one. Damaged, with 3 dead men aboard, the expedition ship semi-crashes and seeks to hide from this obviously hostile civilization. The three dead members of the crew are buried and four of the local inhabitants pay a friendly call. Then during the second night on this planet, one of the dead bodies knocks on the door and wants to come in. Something very strange is going on here.

13The Chemistry of Cookery
By W. Mattieu Williams

This book, written in the late 1800s, is a book of chemistry that explains the whys and hows of cooking to trained chefs and laymen alike. The book deals with some compounds of common foodstuffs, like albumen or gluten, and illustrates what happens from a chemist's point of view during certain types of food preparation like roasting, frying, or stewing. A part of the chapters also details adulterations of food - thankfully since outlawed - and how to detect them in the finished product.

This is a collection of articles written by W. Mattieu Williams on different subjects, that in his opinion "are likely to be interesting to all readers who are sufficiently intelligent to prefer sober fact to sensational fiction, but who, at the same time, do not profess to be scientific specialists." This book offers and intriguing glimpse into the scientific ideas of late 19th century. Though nowadays these essays should not be seen as wholly scientifically accurate, they are still entertaining and in many basic aspects remain truthful. - Summary by Kikisaulite

Joaquin Murrieta was a famous Californio bandit, known as the "Robin Hood of El Dorado".<br><br> <i>Joaquin Murrieta was the son of worthy parents, and nothing in his early youth betokened any traits of the monster which he afterwards became. . . . In the following pages every trace of his blood-stained footsteps is closely followed. Some of the facts are furnished by contemporary witnesses; most of them by official documents. He proceeded from step to step, wading deeper and deeper into crime, until quiet citizens were almost afraid to breathe his name aloud.<br><br> In addition to this being a faithful narration of the fearful deeds of Joaquin, incidentally the work gives a faithful delineation of "life in the diggings" in the early days of California, when almost every nugget of gold was blood-spotted ere rude Justice bared her death-dealing arm.</i><br><br> Murrieta is believed to have inspired the fictional character of Zorro by Johnston McCulley. You may judge for yourself how much of the account here is truthful and how much is sensationalized. - Summary by TriciaG & from the Synopsis

It is obvious to Okewood that his old enemy is also in search of the hidden gold, and there ensues a thrilling sequence of adventures, in which the millionaire's pretty daughter takes a prominent part.<br><br> Okewood has the cipher, and the Man with the Clubfoot determines to secure it, for without that cipher it is impossible to discover the hiding-place of the treasure; but there is something that the Man with the Clubfoot does not know, whereas Okewood does. - Summary by Original Gutenberg text

29Thing in the Woods
By Margery Williams
Dr. Haverill is asked to fill in as local physician for the skittish Dr. Lennox in a small Pennsylvania town. The locals seem to be a superstitious bunch, prone to fearing traveling in the woods at night and with good reason. It seems a series of vicious attacks have occurred by what appears to be some kind of large animal. As the bodies begin to pile up, Dr. Haverill starts to question whether the responsible party could be something beyond humanity.<br><br> Writer Margery Williams Bianco (writing here under the pseudonym Harper Williams) is perhaps better known for writing the children's classic "The Velveteen Rabbit", but this dark slice of mystery horror fiction was found to be admired by none other than H. P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft scholars have noted in particular a distinct influence that this book had on his famous story "The Dunwich Horror".<br><br> Also please note that this book is of its time and features racially insensitive language in the early chapters. Those who are concerned with such language should be advised.

30Clubfoot the Avenger
By Valentine Williams

At the conclusion of The Return of Clubfoot, Dr. Grundt has been left for dead on a south sea island by former secret agent Desmond Oakwood. Oakwood and his brother Francis are now retired from the Secret Service and are living comfortably retired in England. But the body of an apparent suicide is discovered in a car park in London, and the possibility that Grundt is alive and seeking revenge in England pulls the Oakwoods out of retirement to once again face the sinister and deadly CLUBFOOT. - Summary by sjmarky

31Romance of Modern Engineering
By Archibald Williams
As it would be impossible to treat, in the compass of a few hundred pages, all the great engineering feats of modern times without reducing individual accounts to uninteresting brevity, the author has preferred, where selection is possible, to take typical instances of engineering practice, and, by the aid of comparatively detailed descriptions, to place the reader in a position to appreciate them and similar undertakings. - Summary by Adapted from the Preface

32Romance of Modern Locomotion
By Archibald Williams
In the following pages we shall peep into the history of typical companies in Great Britain, the United States, and elsewhere; consider the various forms of traction, signals, and other mechanical appliances connected with the working of a railway; notice the effects of railway communication on a country for its peaceful development, or its conquest in war; and make the tour of a typical locomotive factory. These and other matters have been treated as simply as may be, but with sufficient fullness to give the reader a fair idea of what the railway really is, how it has been made, and what the future may have in store for it. - Summary by from the preface.

33Romance of Mining
By Archibald Williams
Any writer on mining in its general aspect is, when casting about for a starting-point, driven to express what others have said before him-that the history of mining is the history of civilization. The following pages, while touching on the chief branches of the mining industry, must necessarily omit reference to many of the great treasure-houses of the world. Special prominence has been given to the precious metals, because their discovery and working has witnessed the most stirring scenes in mining life. We have the whole world to roam over; so excursions are made into those spots where typical or prominent instances of mining of various minerals are to be found.

34Romance of Early Exploration
By Archibald Williams
The Author has been encouraged by the reception given to <i>The Romance of Modern Exploration</i> to write a companion volume on the adventures of early travelers and explorers. For conveniences' sake the period covered ends at A.D. 1600, a date sufficiently advanced to permit mention of the first polar expeditions in which English navigators played so important a part.

35Romance of Modern Exploration
By Archibald Williams
It may be thought, perhaps, that exploration must be comparatively easy today. Less laborious no doubt it is in some details when Mandeville and Magellan travelled. But there are difficulties enough remaining to leave the romance of exploration untouched. Every explorer carries his life in his hand, however fine may be his outfit. Within the limits of this volume it is impossible even to notice all the modern explorers who have a claim on our admiration. - Summary adapted from the introduction

41Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews, Volume 3
By John Owen and Edward Williams
It is hardly needful to observe, that it is the incumbent duty of every faithful abridger, as well as a faithful translator, to adhere scrupulously to the sense of his author, except the reason to the contrary be universally obvious, nor even then without apprizing the reader of it. This is what I have endeavored throughout to pay the strictest regard to. The reader of the ensuing pages will find in them the genuine thoughts and sentiments of Dr. Owen, to the best of my knowledge, and no other. Sometimes, indeed, the abridger thought it absolutely necessary, in discharging his duty to his readers, to exchange an expression, or to alter a phraseology, for others that appear now more expressive, or better understood. And now and then he has taken the liberty, for a similar reason,of inserting an expressive or animating epithet, justified by the connexion; or turned a sentence merely declarative into an awakening interogation. Some may think that these liberties are after all ioo seldom used, while others are ready to entertain a jealousy, when they apprehend that any freedom is taken with an author whom they so much revere. To please all is impossible, while men's ideas of propriety and utility are so various; and, therefore, to attempt it would be a fruitless toil, the offspring of folly, and the parent of disappointment. Suffice it to say, that in the present undertaking the Editor has proposed as the end, the greatest and most general good, and with dependance on the head of all gifts and graces, the blessed and adorable Person, whose glory in the salvation of his people is the sublime and delightful subject of these volumes, he has pursued that end according to the best of his judgment. And he cannot help indulging a pleasing hope, that the cause of truth, the profitable knowledge of God our Savior, the edification of believers, and the increase of fervent love among brethren, will be promoted by the present attempt. - Summary by Editor's Preface
