Proxy for the main russ tank

We present Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper [S II] {\lambda}6716 and H{\alpha} spectroscopic maps of the warm ionized medium (WIM) in the Scutum-Centaurus Arm at Galactic longitudes 310{\deg} < l < 345{\deg}. Using extinction-corrected H{\alpha} intensities (IH{\alpha}c), we measure an exponential scale height of electron density-squared in the arm of H_ne^2 = 0.30 kpc (assuming a distance of 3.5 kpc), intermediate between that observed in the inner Galaxy and in the Perseus Arm. The [S II]/H{\alpha} line ratio is enhanced at large |z| and in sightlines with faint IH{\alpha}c. We find that the [S II]/H{\alpha} line ratio has a power law relationship with IH{\alpha}c from a value of ~=1.0 at IH{\alpha}c < 0.2 R (Rayleighs) to a value of ~=0.08 at IH{\alpha}c >= 100 R. The line ratio is better correlated with H{\alpha} intensity than with height above the plane, indicating that the physical conditions within the WIM vary systematically with electron density. We argue that the variation of the line ratio with height is a consequence of the decrease of electron density with height. Our results reinforce the well-established picture in which the diffuse H{\alpha} emission is due primarily to emission from in situ photoionized gas, with scattered light only a minor contributor.

By positional matching to the catalogue of Galactic Ring Survey molecular clouds, we have derived distances to 793 Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) sources out of a possible 806 located within the region defined by Galactic longitudes l = 28.5 degr to 31.5 degr and latitudes |b| < 1 degr. This section of the Galactic Plane contains several major features of Galactic structure at different distances, mainly mid-arm sections of the Perseus and Sagittarius spiral arms and the tangent of the Scutum-Centarus arm, which is coincident with the end of the Galactic Long Bar. By utilising the catalogued cloud distances plus new kinematic distance determinations, we are able to separate the dense BGPS clumps into these three main line-of-sight components to look for variations in star-formation properties that might be related to the different Galactic environments. We find no evidence of any difference in either the clump mass function or the average clump formation efficiency (CFE) between these components that might be attributed to environmental effects on scales comparable to Galactic-structure features. Despite having a very high star-formation rate, and containing at least one cloud with a very high CFE, the star formation associated with the Scutum-Centarus tangent does not appear to be in any way abnormal or different to that in the other two spiral-arm sections. Large variations in the CFE are found on the scale of individual clouds, however, which may be due to local triggering agents as opposed to the large-scale Galactic structure.

We report on the unprecedented Red Supergiant (RSG) population of a massive young cluster, located at the base of the Scutum-Crux Galactic arm. We identify candidate cluster RSGs based on {\it 2MASS} photometry and medium resolution spectroscopy. With follow-up high-resolution spectroscopy, we use CO-bandhead equivalent width and high-precision radial velocity measurements to identify a core grouping of 26 physically-associated RSGs -- the largest such cluster known to-date. Using the stars' velocity dispersion, and their inferred luminosities in conjuction with evolutionary models, we argue that the cluster has an initial mass of $\sim$40,000\msun, and is therefore among the most massive in the galaxy. Further, the cluster is only a few hundred parsecs away from the cluster of 14 RSGs recently reported by Figer et al (2006). These two RSG clusters represent 20% of all known RSGs in the Galaxy, and now offer the unique opportunity to study the pre-supernova evolution of massive stars, and the Blue- to Red-Supergiant ratio at uniform metallicity. We use GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL and MAGPIS survey data to identify several objects in the field of the larger cluster which seem to be indicative of recent region-wide starburst activity at the point where the Scutum-Crux arm intercepts the Galactic bulge. Future abundance studies of these clusters will therefore permit the study of the chemical evolution and metallicity gradient of the Galaxy in the region where the disk meets the bulge.

Using archival X-ray data, we find that the catalog location of the X-ray binary Scutum X-1 (Sct X-1) is incorrect, and that the correct location is that of the X-ray source AX J183528-0737, which is 15' to the west. Our identification is made on the basis of the 112-s pulse period for this object detected in an XMM-Newton observation, as well as spatial coincidence between AX J183528-0737 and previous X-ray observations. Based on the XMM-Newton data and archival RXTE data, we confirm secular spin-down over 17 years with period derivative Pdot~3.9e-9 s/s, but do not detect a previously reported X-ray iron fluorescence line. We identify a bright (Ks=6.55), red (J-Ks=5.51), optical and infrared counterpart to AX J183528-0737 from 2MASS, a number of mid-IR surveys, and deep optical observations, which we use to constrain the extinction to and distance of Sct X-1. From these data, as well as limited near-IR spectroscopy, we conclude that Sct X-1 is most likely a binary system comprised of a late-type giant or supergiant and a neutron star.

Combining our measurements with 10 previous measurements from the BeSSeL Survey yields a total sample of 16 sources in the Scutum arm with trigonometric parallaxes in the Galactic longitude range from 5 deg to 32 deg. Assuming a logarithmic spiral model, we estimate a pitch angle of 19.8 (+/-3.1) deg for the Scutum arm, which is larger than pitch angles reported for other spiral arms. The high pitch angle of the arm may be due to the arm's proximity to the Galactic bar. The Scutum arm sources show an average peculiar motion of 4 km/s slower than the Galactic rotation and 8 km/s toward the Galactic center. While the direction of this non-circular motion has the same sign as determined for sources in other spiral arms, the motion toward the Galactic center is greater for the Scutum arm sources.

We report on the discovery of a transient X-ray pulsar, AX J1841.0-0536, serendipitously found in the Scutum arm region with the ASCA in two separate observations. The X-ray flux is very faint at the beginning, but exhibits two flares in the second observation. The flare flux increases by a factor 10 within only about 1 hr. Coherent pulsations with a period of 4.7394 plus/minus 0.0008 s were detected in the brightest flare phase. The X-ray spectra in the quiescent and flare phases were fitted with an absorbed power-law model with a photon index about 1 plus a narrow Gaussian line at the center energy of 6.4 keV. The interstellar column density of about 3E22 /cm2 may indicate that AX J1841.0-0536 is located at a tangential point of the Scutum arm at about 10 kpc distance. The coherent pulsations, large flux variability and the spectral shape suggest that AX J1841.0-0536 is a Be/X-ray binary pulsar.

We provide refined X-ray positions for all five targets enabling us to pinpoint the most likely counterpart in optical/infrared archives. Spectral and timing information (much of which are provided for the first time) allow us to give a firm classification for IGR J18462-0223 and to offer tentative classifications for the others. For IGR J18462-0223, we discovered a coherent pulsation period of 997+-1 s which we attribute to the spin of a neutron star in a highly-obscured (nH = 2e23 /cm2) high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB). This makes IGR J18462-0223 the seventh supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) candidate with a confirmed pulsation period. IGR J18457+0244 is a highly-absorbed (nH = 8e23 /cm2) source in which the possible detection of an iron line suggests an active galactic nucleus (AGN) of type Sey-2 situated at z = 0.07(1). A periodic signal at 4.4 ks could be a quasi-periodic oscillation which would make IGR J18457+0244 one of a handful of AGN in which such features have been claimed, but a slowly-rotating neutron star in an HMXB can not be ruled out. IGR J18482+0049 represents a new obscured HMXB candidate with nH = 4e23 /cm2. We tentatively propose that IGR J18532+0416 is either an AGN or a pulsar in an HMXB system. The X-ray spectral properties of IGR J18538-0102 are consistent with the AGN classification that has been proposed for this source.

We report the discovery of only the fourth massive WO star to be found in the Milky Way, and only the seventh identified within the Local Group. This has resulted from the first observations made in a programme of follow-up spectroscopy of candidate emission line stars from the AAO/UK Schmidt Southern Galactic Plane H-alpha Survey. The optical spectrum of this star, to become WR 93b in the Catalogue of Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, is presented and described. WR 93b is classified as WO3 and is shown to be highly reddened (E(B-V) = 2.1 pm 0.1). A recombination line analysis of the emission lines yields the abundance ratios C/He = 0.95 and O/He = 0.13 (by number). Comparisons at near infrared wavelengths of reddening corrected photometry between WR 93b and both of Sand 2 (WO3, D = 49 kpc) and Sand 5 (WO2, D = 1.75 kpc) yields a consistent distance to WR 93b of 3.4 kpc. Positioned at Galactic co-ordinates l = 353.27, b = -0.85, the star is most likely located in the Scutum-Crux Arm of the inner Milky Way. We note that none of the four Galactic WO stars lies significantly beyond the Solar Circle (with two well inside). Estimation of the wind terminal velocity in WR 93b at 5750 km/s makes this star the current wind speed record holder among all non-degenerate stars.

The location of the Scutum Red-Supergiant (RSG) clusters at the end of the Galactic Bar makes them an excellent probe of the Galaxy's secular evolution; while the clusters themselves are ideal testbeds in which to study the predictions of stellar evolutionary theory. To this end, we present a study of the RSGs' surface abundances using a combination of high-resolution H-band spectroscopy and spectral synthesis analysis. We provide abundance measurements for elements C, O, Si, Mg, Ti, and Fe. We find that the surface abundances of the stars studied are consistent with CNO burning and deep, rotationally enhanced mixing. The average a/Fe ratios of the clusters are solar, consistent with a thin-disk population. However, we find significantly sub-solar Fe/H ratios for each cluster, a result which strongly contradicts a simple extrapolation of the Galactic metallicity gradient to lower Galacto-centric distances. We suggest that a simple one-dimensional parameterization of the Galaxy's abundance patterns is insufficient at low Galactocentric distances, as large azimuthal variations may be present. Indeed, we show that the abundances of O, Si and Mg are consistent with independent measurements of objects in similar locations in the Galaxy. In combining our results with other data in the literature, we present evidence for large-scale (~kpc) azimuthal variations in abundances at Galacto-centric distances of 3-5kpc. While we cannot rule-out that this observed behaviour is due to systematic offsets between different measurement techniques, we do find evidence for similar behaviour in a study of the barred-spiral galaxy NGC4736 which uses homogeneous methodology. We suggest that these azimuthal abundance variations could result from the intense but patchy star formation driven by the potential of the central bar.

We aim to characterise the properties of a third massive, red supergiant dominated galactic cluster. To accomplish this we utilised a combination of near/mid-IR photometry and spectroscopy to identify and classify the properties of cluster members, and statistical arguments to determine the mass of the cluster. We found a total of 16 strong candidates for cluster membership, for which formal classification of a subset yields spectral types from K3-M4 Ia and luminosities between log(L/L_sun)~4.5-4.8 for an adopted distance of 6+/-1 kpc. For an age in the range of 16-20 Myr, the implied mass is 2-4x10^4 M_sun, making it one of the most massive young clusters in the Galaxy. This discovery supports the hypothesis that a significant burst of star formation occurred at the base of Scutum-Crux arm between 10-20 Myr ago, yielding a stellar complex comprising at least ~10^5M_sun of stars (noting that since the cluster identification criteria rely on the presence of RSGs, we suspect that the true stellar yield will be significantly higher). We highlight the apparent absence of X-ray binaries within the star formation complex and finally, given the physical association of at least two pulsars with this region, discuss the implications of this finding for stellar evolution and the production and properties of neutron stars.

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the B0 III star HD 177989 ($l = 17.8^{rm \o}, b = -11.9^{\rm o}, d$ = 4.9 kpc). This line of sight passes through the high latitude outflow from the Scutum Supershell (GS 018-04+44), a structure that lies at a kinematic distance of ~ 3.5 kpc, and spans ~ 5$^{\rm o}$ in diameter. The O VI $\lambda$1031.93 line is compared with STIS observations of Si IV, C IV, and N V to examine the ionizing mechanisms responsible for producing the high ion absorption, as well as to study the processes by which gas is expelled into the halo. The O VI profile spans a similar velocity range as the other highly ionized atoms, from -70 to +80 km/s. Component fits reveal very broad absorption at the kinematic velocity of the Scutum shell, which differs from the narrow Si IV, C IV, and N V components, suggesting that these other species occupy a more confined region. It is possible that the O VI is present in hot gas from the shell interior that is diffusing into the high latitude region above it. The column density ratios show that while the C IV and Si IV columns are amplified in this region, the enhancement is not reflected in N V or O VI. We suggest that the ionic ratios and column densities could be produced by ~ 150-200 turbulent mixing layers lying in a fragmented medium above the polar cap of the superbubble. We note through a sight line comparison that although these absorption characteristics are similar to those near the center of Radio Loops I and IV, they differ considerably from those near the edges of the loops. It is apparent that the traits of high ion absorption in a supershell, as well as the ionizing mechanisms responsible, can vary among sight lines through the shell.

HIFI GOT C+ Galactic plane [CII] spectral survey has detected strong emission at the spiral arm tangencies. We use the unique viewing geometry of the Scutum-Crux (S-C) tangency near i = 30degs to detect the warm ionized medium (WIM) component traced by [CII] and to study the effects of spiral density waves on Interstellar Medium (ISM) gas. We compare [CII] velocity features with ancillary HI, 12CO and 13CO data near tangent velocities at each longitude to separate the cold neutral medium and the warm neutral + ionized components in the S-C tangency, then we identify [CII] emission at the highest velocities without any contribution from 12CO clouds, as WIM. We present the GOT C+ results for the S-C tangency. We interpret the diffuse and extended excess [CII] emission at and above the tangent velocities as arising in the electron-dominated warm ionized gas in the WIM. We derive an electron density in the range of 0.2 - 0.9 cm^-3 at each longitude, a factor of several higher than the average value from Halpha and pulsar dispersion. We interpret the excess [CII] in S-C tangency as shock compression of the WIM induced by the spiral density waves.
