By ERIC
The main purpose of this study is to determine the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technology for technology and design. It is also aimed to find out whether there is a statistically significant difference in terms of the gender, the special talent area, the type of school, the grade level, the education level and income rate of families, and the preference of using information and communication technologies. In this study quantitative method was preferred and descriptive screening model was used since it was aimed to determine the students' self-efficacy. The research was conducted with 1.376 pupils who were students in twelve Science and Art Centers in different regions of Turkey. As a data collection tool, "The Self-Efficacy of Educational Technologies for Technology and Design Scale" developed by Author (2019) was used. The scale was prepared in 5-point Likert type and consisted of 4 sub-factors with 20 items. It was found that the four-factor structure explained 52.45% of the total variance for the concept to be measured. Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient value of the scale was a =0.89. According to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results, the items of the scale were grouped under the title of sub-factors as "Technology and Design", "Problem Solving", "Appropriate Tool Selection and the Use of Technology". The scale was found to be highly compatible in terms of current compliance values. According to the results of the research, it was found that the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technology for technology and design was at "Good" (x-bar=3.86 / x-bar=77.26). In addition, while there was no significant difference in terms of the gifted students' self-efficacy of educational technologies for technology and design according to the gender variable, statistically significant difference was found according to the special talent area, the type of school, the grade level, the education level and income rate of their families, and the preference of using information and communication technologies. According to the results of the research, it is observed that gifted students were at "Good" level in terms of the results of the sub factors "the Use of Technology", "the Problem Solving Skills and the Appropriate Tool Selection and the Technology and Design". By the way it can be said that the individualized education program and individual talent recognition program that special talented individuals follow in Science and Art Centers generally meet the efficiency gains.

Researchers published a massive database of more than 2 billion Discord messages that they say they scraped using Discord’s public API. The data was pulled from 3,167 servers and covers posts made between 2015 and 2024, the entire time Discord has been active. Though the researchers claim they’ve anonymized the data, it’s hard to imagine anyone is comfortable with almost a decade of their Discord messages sitting in a public JSON file online. Separately, a different programmer released a Discord tool called "Searchcord" based on a different data set that shows non-anonymized chat histories. These two separate events have created some panic in some Discord communities, with server moderators and users worrying about their privacy. A team of 15 researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil conducted the scrape as part of a research project. The team explained the how and why of the project in a paper titled Discord Unveiled: A Comprehensive Dataset of Public Communication (2015 - 2024), which they say was created so that other teams of researchers could have a database of online discussions to use when studying mental health and politics or training bots. “Throughout every step of our data collection process, we prioritized adherence to ethical standards,” they wrote in a section called ‘Ethical Concerns.’ “Precautions were taken to collect data responsibly. All data was sourced from groups that are explicitly considered public according to Discord’s terms of use, which every user agrees to upon signing up. The data was anonymized, and the methodology was detailed to promote reproducibility and transparency.” That may be the case, but Discord is designed to be a series of chatrooms which are not universally searchable, and which in their design feel far less public than, say, tweeting something or posting it to Reddit. #discord #brazil #brazilians #tech #news #technology #privacy

1New York Idea
By Langdon Mitchell

I find it very hard to classify "The New York Idea" under any of the established rubrics. It is rather too extravagant to rank as a comedy; it is much too serious in its purport, too searching in its character-delineation and too thoughtful in its wit, to be treated as a mere farce. Its title—not, perhaps, a very happy one—is explained in this saying of one of the characters: "Marry for whim and leave the rest to the divorce court—that's the New York idea of marriage."

Like all the plays, from Sardou's "Divorçons" onward, which deal with a too facile system of divorce, this one shows a discontented woman, who has broken up her home for a caprice, suffering agonies of jealousy when her ex-husband proposes to make use of the freedom she has given him, and returning to him at last with the admission that their divorce was at least "premature." In this central conception there is nothing particularly original. It is the wealth of humourous invention displayed in the details both of character and situation that renders the play remarkable. 6Youth of Washington: Told in the Form of an Autobiography
By Silas Weir Mitchell

Departing from the usual third person narratives of biographies, this account is told in the first person as the reminiscences of a now retired George Washington. Reflecting on his days as a youth, he relates his family history, education, and military life up to the age of about 26 when he was a colonel. Naturally the author takes much liberty in filling in the details of Washington’s life, but largely remains true to history and the spirit of the man. The result is an engaging story that flows naturally, entertaining as it informs. - Summary by Larry Wilson

7Little Stories
By Silas Weir Mitchell
Physician and author S. Weir Mitchell brings us a short collection of stories of the human condition. Through diverse settings as the mystical Arabian desert to a lonely park bench, from a jocular sea port to a dusty library packed with archaic tomes written in foreign tongues, S. Weir Mitchell shows us what it means to live as others live. Through hauntings both literal and metaphorical, through desperate acts and moral dilemmas, we are shown through these slight sketches that life is as complicated or simple as we choose to make it. 8Our Air Force: The Keystone of National Defense
By William Lendrum Mitchell
William (Billy) Mitchell was a U.S. Army officer who, during World War I, came to command all U.S. Army air operations in France. He became a strong believer in air power and predicted that in the next war, bombers would be the decisive weapon. After WWI ended he became a forceful advocate for allocating funds to develop a powerful U.S. Air Force as an independent military branch. At the same time he argued for reducing the Navy's heavy spending on battleships, which he was convinced would be easily sunk by enemy aircraft. His efforts to change military policy in these areas became so obnoxious to U.S. military leadership that he was court martialed and separated from the service in 1925.

The story of Mitchell's fight with the War Department was told in the 1955 motion picture "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell", where Mitchell was played by Hollywood star Gary Cooper. In the present 1921 book, "Our Air Force: The Keystone of National Defense", Mitchell stated his case to the public. - Summary by Ted Lienhart
