1Replicating Slamecka And Graf’s (1978) Findings On The Generation Effect: A Delineation Of Past Research

By

The phenomenon in which items generated from one’s own mind are better remembered than passively read material is known as the generation effect (Slamecka & Graf, 1978). The size of the generation effect is the difference in memory performance between generated material relative to read material. The size of the generation effect is measured by calculating the difference between the number of correctly remembered generated words and the number of correctly read words and has been tested using a between-subjects and within-subjects design (Bertsch et al., 2007). In the current study, we aim to directly replicate the methodology used in the original study conducted by Slamecka & Graf (1978). Across two experiments, undergraduate students from University of New Brunswick Saint John will be recruited to participate in this study which will be conducted in the lab. Experiment 1 and 4 of Slamecka and Graf's (1978) original study will be conducted as Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 in the present study, respectively.
