The dynamics of extended bodies is a fundamental problem in any gravitational theory. In the case of General Relativity, this problem is under study since the theory was published. Several methods have been developed and different approaches are avalaible in the literature to interpret the relativistic contributions in the motion under gravity influence. The main goal in this thesis is to study a general method to face the equation of motion for extended bodies in General Relativity. We started with a proposal in the Newtonian theory, which consists in a multipolar expansion for the gravitational potentials as a function of the mass density moments and other physical variables as the stress tensor. The methodology give us the equation of motion for an isolated and self-gravitating system of extended bodies in Newtonian mechanics. A geometrical approach to get the equation of motion is also used for the Newtonian problems, it allows us to extend the methodology to General Relativity. In General Relativity, some new concepts are necessary: world tube, world line, generalized ideas of momentum, angular momentum, torque and center of mass are introduced in a general context. General expressions for the equation of motion in the case of extended bodies are written without any restriction. In order to gain some physical understanding, we compute the Papapetrous's equation of motion for a test extended body in a static and isotropic metric. Finally, we study a system of two extended bodies in the post-Newtonian approximation. We define the mass multipole moments and momentum from the gravitational potentials (metric functions) to the first post-Newtonian order. We follow the Landau-Liftshitz formalism to find out the equation of motion for the moments and applying the standard coordinate transformation for this theory, we write the traslational equation of motion.

Numerical relativity is finally coming of age with the development of massively parallel computers. 3D problems, which were completely intractable several years ago due to limited computer power, can now be performed with grid sizes of about $200^3$. We report on several new codes developed for solving the full 3D Einstein equations, and present results of using them to evolve black holes and gravitational waves.

An action for simplicial euclidean general relativity involving only left-handed fields is presented. The simplicial theory is shown to converge to continuum general relativity in the Plebanski formulation as the simplicial complex is refined. This contrasts with the Regge model for which Miller and Brewin have shown that the full field equations are much more restrictive than Einstein's in the continuum limit. The action and field equations of the proposed model are also significantly simpler then those of the Regge model when written directly in terms of their fundamental variables. An entirely analogous hypercubic lattice theory, which approximates Plebanski's form of general relativity is also presented.

It is shown that electro (magneto) static sector of Maxwell's electrodynamics coupled to the dilaton field in a string theory form possesses the symmetry group of the stationary General Relativity in vacuum. Performing the Ernst formalism, we develope a technique for generation of exact solutions in this modified electrodynamics on the base of the normalized Ehlers symmetry transformation. In the electrostatic case, we construct and study a general class of spherically symmetric solutions that describes a point-like sourse of the Coulomb type. It is shown that this source is characterized by asymptotical freedom of the electrostatic interaction at short distances. Also it is established that the total electrostatic energy of this source is finite and inversely proportional to the dilaton-Maxwell coupling constant.

The effects of a non-vanishing value for the cosmological constant in the scenario of Lorentz symmetry breaking recently proposed by Cohen and Glashow (which they denote as Very Special Relativity) are explored and observable consequences are pointed out.

We show that representations of the group of spacetime diffeomorphism and the Dirac algebra both arise in a phase-space histories version of canonical general relativity. This is the general-relativistic analogue of the novel time structure introduced previously in history theory: namely, the existence in non-relativistic physics of two types of time translation; and the existence in relativistic field theory of two distinct Poincare groups.

Computational methods are essential to provide waveforms from coalescing black holes, which are expected to produce strong signals for the gravitational wave observatories being developed. Although partial simulations of the coalescence have been reported, scientifically useful waveforms have so far not been delivered. The goal of the AppleswithApples (AwA) Alliance is to design, coordinate and document standardized code tests for comparing numerical relativity codes. The first round of AwA tests have now being completed and the results are being analyzed. These initial tests are based upon periodic boundary conditions designed to isolate performance of the main evolution code. Here we describe and carry out an additional test with periodic boundary conditions which deals with an essential feature of the black hole excision problem, namely a non-vanishing shift. The test is a shifted version of the existing AwA gauge wave test. We show how a shift introduces an exponentially growing instability which violates the constraints of a standard harmonic formulation of Einstein's equations. We analyze the Cauchy problem in a harmonic gauge and discuss particular options for suppressing instabilities in the gauge wave tests. We implement these techniques in a finite difference evolution algorithm and present test results. Although our application here is limited to a model problem, the techniques should benefit the simulation of black holes using harmonic evolution codes.

The Michelson-Moreley experiment showed that the time taken for light to travel in the direction of the earth's motion and in the opposite direction were the same. That can only mean one of 2 things, that the Earth is NOT spinning or that light moves through an Ether that moves with the Earth. But apparently someone 'proved' that Ether dragging is not possible: "As mentioned above, Michelson initially believed that his experiment would confirm Stokes' theory, according to which the aether was fully dragged in the vicinity of the earth (see Aether drag hypothesis). However, complete aether drag contradicts the observed aberration of light and was contradicted by other experiments as well." So what does that leave? The Earth is not moving? Personally I am still not sure about that. I think that a moving Ether explains gravity and Einsteins nonsense. If the Ether is attached to matter, then you can get Ether density, which is what causes gravity. See my other video about space density theory. But another experiment would be bouncing a laser off the moon, once when the Moon is behind the Earth's course, and again when it is in front of it. This should show a difference in time taken, as the Ether density would not be constant. This is a write-up of a talk for non-specialists on the treatment of angular momentum for radiating systems resolving the supertranslation problem.

Relativistic thermodynamics as result of some recent computer simulations is derived.

In this lecture we deal with the construction of surface densities for the angular momentum of the sources of asymptotically flat vacuum stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. These sources arise from the discontinuities of the twist potential. The result will be applied to the Kerr metric to obtain an integrable density which can be viewed as the regularized version of the density obtained using other formalisms.

Poisson bracket relations for generators of canonical transformations are derived directly from the Galilei and Poincare groups of changes of space-time coordinates. The method is simple but rigorous. The meaning of each step is clear because it corresponds to an operation in the group of changes of space-time coordinates. Only products and inverses are used; differences are not used. It is made explicitly clear why constants occur in some bracket relations but not in others, and how some constants can be removed, so that in the end there is a constant in the bracket relations for the Galilei group but not for the Poincare group. Conversion to quantum mechanics is immediate. One result is a simpler derivation of the commutation relations for angular momentum directly from rotations. Problems are included.

After recalling the conceptual foundations and the basic structure of general relativity, we review some of its main modern developments (apart from cosmology) : (i) the post-Newtonian limit and weak-field tests in the solar system, (ii) strong gravitational fields and black holes, (iii) strong-field and radiative tests in binary pulsar observations, (iv) gravitational waves, (v) general relativity and quantum theory.

All the Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) models studied in literature so far involve a deformation of the energy conservation rule that forces us to release the hypothesis of the additivity of the energy for composite systems. In view of the importance of the issue for a consistent formulation of a DSR statistical mechanics and a DSR thermodynamics, we show that DSR models preserving the usual (i.e. additive) energy conservation rule can be found. These models allow the construction of a DSR-covariant extensive energy. The implications of the analysis for the dynamics of DSR-covariant multiparticle systems are also briefly discussed.

Doubly special relativity (DSR), with both an invariant velocity and an invariant length scale, elegantly preserves the principle of relativity between moving observers, and appears as a promising candidate of the quantum theory of gravity. We study the modifications of photon gas thermodynamics in the framework of DSR with an invariant length $|\lambda|$, after properly taking into account the effects of modified dispersion relation, upper bounded energy-momentum space, and deformed integration measure. We show that with a positive $\lambda$, the grand partition function, the energy density, the specific heat, the entropy, and the pressure are smaller than those of special relativity (SR), while the velocity of photons and the ratio of pressure to energy are larger. In contrast, with a negative $\lambda$, the quantum gravity effects show up in the opposite direction. However, these effects only manifest themselves significantly when the temperature is larger than $10^{-3} E_{\rm P}$. Thus, DSR can have considerable influence on the early universe in cosmological study.

Imagine a context where a speaker is justified in making a claim that, however, does not correspond to the facts. Recent work in experimental philosophy has uncovered that, in such contexts (often referred to as "eavesdropping contexts'), English speakers split on the truth value of sentences with epistemic modals like "Joe might be in Boston" (Knobe & Yalcin 2014, Phillips & Khoo 2019, Phillips & Mandelkern 2020) and even simple declarative sentences like "Joe is in Boston" (Reuter & Brun 2021, Ricciardi & Martin 2022). Crucially, they did so even when they were previously asked if the speaker had made the claim to the best of their knowledge, which was meant to ensure that participants were not unconsciously substituting the question about the truth with a question about the assertability of the statement. Two alternative interpretations for the behavior of English speakers in eavesdropping contexts have been put forth. 1. The terms "true" and "false" are associated with two distinct senses, and participants' choices reveal their adoption of a particular sense. Those selecting "true" align with a coherence sense of truth and falsity (a statement is deemed true or false based on whether its content coheres with a set of other statements assumed as a reference point). In contrast, those opting for "false" adhere to a correspondence sense of truth and falsity (a statement is deemed true or false based on whether its content corresponds to the facts). This interpretation is situated within the traditional theorizing on truth and was advanced by Reuter & Brun in 2021. 2. The terms "true" and "false" are associated with one sense, and participants' choices reveal their adoption of a particular perspective to which this sense is relativized. Those selecting "true" align with the speaker's perspective (the statement is true based on what the speaker knows at the time of utterance). In contrast, those selecting "false" align with their own perspective as assessors (the statement is false based on what they know at the time of the assessment). This interpretation is situated within the "New Relativism" approach to truth that emerged in the past two decades and was advanced by Ricciardi & Martin in 2022. In this project, we aim to contribute to such a debate by providing further insights into the behavior of English speakers in eavesdropping judgments. Specifically, we investigate the key determinant in directing participants toward judging a sentence as true or false in such contexts.

The relation between the special relativity and quantum mechanics is discussed. Based on the postulate that space-time inversion is equavalent to particle-antiparticle transformation, the essence of special relativity is explored and the relativistic modification on Stationary Schr\"{o}dinger Equation is derived.

The paper presents an attempt to suggest an alternative way of considering the fundamentals of Einstein's special relativity theory. Its formulation based on introducing an inertial reference system by rigid linking of clocks to a free entity to define proper time is self-contradictory since the operation of rigid linking involves interaction which is excluded by definition for a free entity. The way to overcome this inconsistency is proposed by postulating that each free entity (object, particle) has to be ideal clocks by itself, providing ideal internal time standards defined by the only intrinsic feature of a free entity, namely its proper mass which means that de Broglie's periodic phenomenon has to be considered as a fundamental principle needed to built the special relativity, along with the principle of indistinguishability allowing to define the particle's proper mass with ideal accuracy. Further, the internal distance standard is provided by passing to Compton wavelength and the velocity standard is introduced by means of Hubble's law. It is proposed to interpret the wave function as an internal system of reference undergoing distortion when external interaction is included.

Points of conflict between the principles of general relativity and quantum theory are highlighted. I argue that the current language of QFT is inadequete to deal with gravity and review attempts to identify some of the features which are likely to present in the correct theory of quantum gravity.

This paper discusses new fundamental physics experiment that will test relativistic gravity at the accuracy better than the effects of the second order in the gravitational field strength, proportional to G(sup 2). The Laser Astrometric Test Of Relativity (LATOR) mission uses laser interferometry between two micro-spacecraft whose lines of sight pass close by the Sun to accurately measure deflection of light in the solar gravity. The key element of the experimental design is a redundant geometry optical truss provided by a long-baseline (100 m) multi-channel stellar optical interferometer placed on the International Space Station (ISS). The spatial interferometer is used for measuring the angles between the two spacecraft and for orbit determination purposes. In Euclidean geometry, determination of a triangle s three sides determines any angle therein; with gravity changing the optical lengths of sides passing close by the Sun and deflecting the light, the Euclidean relationships are overthrown. The geometric redundancy enables LATOR to measure the departure from Euclidean geometry caused by the solar gravity field to a very high accuracy. LATOR will not only improve the value of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) gamma to unprecedented levels of accuracy of 1 part in 10(exp 8), it will also reach ability to measure effects of the next post-Newtonian order (c(sup -4)) of light deflection resulting from gravity s intrinsic non-linearity. The solar quadrupole moment parameter, J(sub 2), will be measured with high precision, as well as a variety of other relativistic effects including Lense-Thirring precession. LATOR will lead to very robust advances in the tests of Fundamental physics: this mission could discover a violation or extension of general relativity, or reveal the presence of an additional long range interaction in the physical law. There are no analogs to the LATOR experiment; it is unique and is a natural culmination of solar system gravity experiments.

A new fundamental test of Einstein's theory of special relativity is currently underway, employing instrumentation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Deep Space Network (DSN) and the Global Satellite Positioning System (GPS). The scientific objective of this experiment is to search for a possible spatial variation of the one-way velocity of light. The experiment involves monitoring over a full rotation of the Earth the time of flight of laser pulses transmitted along optical fibers connected to hydrogen maser clocks separated by several kilometers. These clocks are additionally compared by radio link using GPS satellites. This unique experimental configuration, coupled with state-of-the-art technology, allows us to test precisely the assumed constancy of the one- way velocity of light.

A modernized version of the classical Michelson-Morley experiment has recently been performed. The purpose of the experiment was to test the constancy of the velocity of light over a long baseline with light propagated one-way instead of back-and- forth. This was performed with instrumentation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Deep Space Network (DSN). In particular, measurements were made of the phases of two hydrogen maser frequency standards separated by 29 kilometers by propagating a laser signal over a highly stable fiber optics cable. Presented are the results obtained for measurements performed continuously during a full rotation of the Earth.
