This study examined the relationship between children's environmental attitudes and their perceived competence and locus of control. The study sample consisted of 171 children in grades 3, 4, and 5. Children completed the Children's Attitudes Toward the Environment Scale (CATES) and the Janus Environmental Attitudes Scale (JEAS), which assessed their attitudes toward the environment, and other questionnaires which assessed their perceived competence and locus of control. Additionally, children chose an environmental or nonenvironmental activity to engage in during each of three classroom educational sessions. Results indicated that children who possessed an internal locus of control had more positive scores on measures of environmental attitudes than did other children. This correlation suggests that children who feel they have control over and responsibility for their own actions and behaviors have strong pro-environmental attitudes. Results also indicated that children who scored high on measures of behavior and physical appearance had more positive environmental attitudes than did children who scored low. The study also found that the CATES had a high internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and was moderately correlated with the JEAS. (TJQ)

Note about terminology: throughout this episode, you will hear the terms “accepted/acceptable” and “not accepted/not acceptable” in regards to items that cannot be recycled. We wanted to provide a clarification on exactly what this means. We show that by generating smaller cluster "Lego bricks", reusing one ancilla per brick, the cluster can be produced with maximal efficiency, requiring fewer than half the operations compared with no bus reuse. By reducing the time required to prepare sections of the cluster, bus reuse more than doubles the size of the computational workspace that can be used before decoherence effects dominate. A row of buses in parallel provides fully scalable cluster state generation requiring only 20 CPhase gates per bus use.

ACS Virtual Lecture Series talk by Nedine Moonsamy (University of Pretoria), titled 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Methods of Speculation in African Popular Culture', August 26th 2021. Abstract: Gaining recognition from mega-brands like Marvel through the success of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (2018), Afrofuturism is a well-established field for black speculation in popular culture in the West. Yet as an increasing number of artists and theorists take to this field, there is a discernible grappling with the influence and interruption of global forms that bifurcates the practice and the experience of African speculative imaginaries. In an attempt to provide a methodological form for addressing these nuanced positionalities and differences, this presentation deploys the three main categorical distinctions used by the Waste Hierarchy – reduce, reuse and recycle. In line with Stephanie Newell’s observation that Africa has served as a material and discursive dumping ground for the Western world ( Histories of Dirt ), I also make use of the interpretative logic of waste in order to explore how African popular culture approaches this virtual wasteland with creative vigour through the configuration of speculative imaginaries whose strategies and styles are analogous to the three main categories of the waste hierarchy while also escaping the logic of a hierarchy per se. Instead, this undertaking is more suggestive of strategic variations that co-exist and amalgamate as part of a richer and more comprehensive account of African speculative imaginaries that actively reinscribe the inheritances of waste and its attendant methodologies. – Please see the trailer for the presentation here – Bio: Nedine Moonsamy is a Senior Lecturer in the English department at the University of Pretoria. She is currently writing a monograph on contemporary South African Fiction and otherwise conducts research on science fiction in Africa and is part of the Urban Cultures and Popular Imaginaries in Africa (UCAPI) project . Her debut novel, The Unfamous Five (Modjaji Books) was shortlisted for the HSS Fiction Award (2021), and her poetry was shortlisted for the inaugural New Contrast National Poetry Award (2021).

We review gas-phase abundances in PNe and describe their dual utility as archives of original progenitor metallicity via the alpha elements, as well as sources of processed material from nucleosynthesis during the star's evolution, i.e., C, N, and s-process elements. We describe the analysis of PN spectra to derive abundances and discuss the discrepancies that arise from different choices at each step. Abundance results for the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds from various groups of investigators are presented; the observational results are compared with theoretical predictions of AGB stellar yields. Finally, we suggest areas where more work is needed to improve our abilities to determine abundances in PNe.

Dame Elspeth is kept in a tower after the death of her husband. The widow of the Baron of Avenel and her daughter seek safety with Elspeth in her tower. Hearing the baroness's deathbed confession, Father Philip notices her Bible. As he carries it to the Lord Abbot, it is taken from him by a White Lady. A sub-prior investigates this story and finds that the Bible is now back in the owner's hands. Later, Elspeth's son sees the White Lady when he snatches the Bible from a flaming altar. Intrigue follows intrigue. Halbert and Sir Piercie Shafton fight, and Halbert flees, leaving Sir Piercie mortally wounded. Shafton, however, recovers only to be accused of murdering Edward's missing brother. Mysie helps Shafton escape from jail. Edward has vowed to become a monk at the urging of the White Lady. After a battle between English and Scottish soldiers against Sir John's troops, Mysie is declared a suitable wife for Sir Piercie. The monks are allowed to keep their monastery. In the poem, Lady Margaret Scott of Buccleuch, the "Flower of Teviot" is beloved by Baron Henry of Cranstown an ally of the Ker Clan, but a deadly feud exists between the two border clans of Scott and Carr/Ker, which has resulted in the recent murder of Lady Margaret's father, Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch by the Kers on the High Street in Edinburgh. 22Black Dwarf

The Black Dwarf is the first of the “Tales of My Landlord” series, which also includes The Bride of Lammermoor and The Heart of Midlothian. The third preliminary chapter depicts two horsemen arriving at the Wallace Inn in Gandercleugh, where one of the horsemen relates the tale. The story proper is set on the Scottish borders during the reign of Queen Anne. The Jacobite movement is in its infancy, but the inhabitants of this part of the country have enough to quarrel about without politics inciting them to it. Several families of high and low birth bear no good intentions to each other, and a weird, brooding dwarf, who wishes ill on all of humanity, seems to direct and perpetuate the mayhem from his lonely cottage on Mucklestane Moor. While stories of the Polar explorers and their efforts to reach the Poles have been told again and again, the constant renewal of expeditions adds, every year, fresh incidents to the record, until it may almost be said that the fascination of the frozen regions is as inexhaustible as the list of Polar heroes is illimitable. Nor is the interest confined solely to the achievement of modern explorers. However great the results of their exertions may be, the fact that, in spite of all the advantages conferred by recent scientific discovery and modern appliances, the explorers of to-day have failed to penetrate the uttermost secrets of the worlds of ice, renders more impressively heroic the struggles of the earlier travellers, whose equipment, viewed in comparison with that of modern man, was apparently so inadequate and often inappropriate. <br></br> No series of Polar adventure stories would be complete without a prominent place being given to the earlier explorers, and especially to that British hero, Franklin, whose name is so inseparably associated with the history of Arctic exploration.
