A four tracked four track e.p. by Vladivostok recorded in a warehouse in Redfern, Sydney, in March 1998. So called because it was was released onto a red coloured cassette and then sent to China, where it was heard everyday by millions of citizens of the rural south western-provinces on XingFang FM, the radio station run by the famous teenaged ping-pong player. Eventually the cassette broke, causing disappointment to their legion of fans. This was to be the last Vladivostok release, except that it actually wasn't. A classic soft rock/oldies/smooth jazz instrumentals custom programme by AEI Music. This is what customers of Red Lobster seafood restaurants in the USA listened to in late summer 1993. The placement of an instrumental every 3 or 4 vocal cuts almost makes it sound like a loose version of Expressions. RL and Olive Garden were still O&O by General Mills at the time and Darden Restaurants Group wouldn't be spun off until sometime in 1995. Darden switched from AEI to Muzak later in the 1990s so this tape is a rarity. Their nationwide custom stream (formerly " RL Music Program ") is reportedly still available via SES-3 tp. 22 as of late 2021. Speed correction was -26.75% and the audio was split into separate blocks for presentation. No noise reduction or other post-processing has been done. There are some massive dropouts and fading in track 1 (1L) but the others, especially the inner tracks (1R/2R) seem alright. Track 4 (2L) had a few little fadey spots early on but nothing severe. The tape pack had some minor fungal growth on it, likely from poor storage conditions over almost 30 years but I was able to clean it off by removing the tape pack from the cartridge and wiping both sides of it with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Most of the growth was on the underside (side 1) so its acidic byproducts may have migrated upwards through capillary action into the tape pack, between winds, damaging sections of the tape 1. Overall the tape is otherwise in reasonably good condition. And yes, the deck's path did get a thorough 99% isopropyl bath after both passes. I believe the discrepancy of volume levels and companding between tracks was an issue with how the recording was mastered rather than physical damage. I have a couple more Special Programme tapes (check back later...) in better condition from that same period that are also like that. Don't know why. The FLAC files listed are Archive's own autoderivatives and cannot provide technical support if you download them. Master files are encoded as 44100 Hz 16-bit linear PCM (RIFF header).
