And there are thousands of fairy tales and stories in cultures around the world, that have this power. \"The Queen Bee,\" a fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, was new to me when I set out to record this podcast. It's pretty short and I didn't expect much. I didn't love the story or think that it would find its way into a podcast, but the tale kept revealing new depths and I was compelled to follow the trail.This fairy tale got me thinking about what kind of person I am and who I want to be, about hopelessness and surrender, belonging and miracles. "Research as Dialog and Reciprocity: Conducting Archival Research on a Christian Nepali Hymnbook" by Victoria (Tori) Dalzell abstract: All Protestant Christian churches in Nepal today use the Khristiya Bhajan as their primary hymnal. Yet despite the centrality of this song collection to the life of this religious community, this hymnal’s history is not well known. This conference paper will discuss aims and methods for my upcoming archival research in Yale Divinity School’s Special Collections, which houses three collections crucial to my current project concerning congregational song practices in Nepal: the Nepal Church History Project and the institutional records of the two largest international missions organizations operating in Nepal. Through this research, I aim to answer three historical questions: Who were the composers and contributors to the Khristiya Bhajan? What early 20th century practices in Nepali churches in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, India—where the Nepali church originated—set precedents for the song practices I encountered in my fieldwork in Nepal? And how might an emphasis on literacy by international missions organizations in Nepal have influenced the initial creation of the Khristiya Bhajan? This pre-research paper explores how a focus on research methods, specifically archival research, can allow ethnomusicologists to dialog with scholars in other disciplines (in my case, hymnology) and be a form of reciprocity with interlocutors—in my case, my interlocutors in Nepal by adding to their knowledge about their ubiquitous song collection and contributing to their critical conversations about congregational song practices. Tori is an ethnomusicologist whose work focuses on ethnicity, ritual, and belonging in Nepal and the Himalayan region. She has received a Franklin Research Grant from the American Philosophical Society (2019) and a Fulbright IIE (2012-2013). Her research has been published in Himalaya, Anthropology and Humanism, Asian Music, and Studies in Nepali History and Society. She received her PhD from the University of California Riverside in 2015 and continues to reside in Southern California.

A scoping review of reciprocity in the study of the coach-athlete relationship in organized sport: Mapping out current knowledge and implications for future research

This study aims to investigate the reciprocity between social mindfulness and well-being in adolescents through a cross-lagged design. Adolescents from several schools in China will be recruited to participate, with data collection occurring at 3 time points, approximately four months apart. The primary focus of this research is to explore the mutual influence between social mindfulness and well-being over time. Additionally, the study will examine the mediating roles of key relationships, including teacher-student, parent-child, and peer relationships, as well as emotional empathy, in shaping the dynamic between social mindfulness and well-being. Expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of how social mindfulness and well-being influence each other and the contextual factors that may moderate or mediate this relationship.

Willingness to help has been shown in previous research to affect one’s reputation as a cooperator and their likelihood of receiving help from others. Evolutionary theorists believe this happens because cooperative behavior in humans is only adaptive if they receive reciprocal help by selectively cooperating with other cooperators. However, reciprocal helping only provides a benefit if the attempt to help is successful. Therefore low helping efficacy may have similar consequences as low willingness to help. Even if an individual is willing to provide help, if they cannot provide useful help they may not earn the same boost in reputation or garner reciprocal help to the same extent as someone who can effectively help. This study examines whether the extent to which an individual can provide effective help (helping efficacy) influences their reputation and odds of receiving help in the future. We will also examine whether there is an interaction between the effect of helping efficacy and willingness to help on reputation and reciprocity.

This parent-child relationship is a reciprocal give and take between parent and child of various domains comprising of emotions, sociality, and physical actions (Driscoll & Pianta, 2011). For many, the parent-child relationship is the first interpersonal relationship they form and sets the basis for all future relationships, and it can be an important social environment for children to learn and observe social cues and to learn to process social information (Driscoll & Pianta, 2011). Currently, there is already a well-established link between the important influence of the parent-child relationship on the social functioning for children who are typically hearing (TH). On the other hand, for children that experience difficulties accessing social interaction in their environment such as those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH), their experience of the parent-child relationship could be different. With both partners (parent and child) learning to adjust to new communication rules, new routines, and different educational and medical needs, it can create frustrations and misunderstandings that interfere with the relationship quality and subsequently DHH children’s social functioning. Therefore, this current study aims to fill the knowledge gap and examine whether any differences are in place for DHH and TH children on their relationships (i.e., positive interactions, conflict, and dependency) with their parents, and also further examine the relation between the quality of the parent-child relationship and children’s social functioning (i.e., social competence and externalizing behaviour).

Does increasing recognition for a group decrease their support for blaming outgroups? We study the scapegoating of welfare recipients, a strategy employed across Europe by the populist radical right to mobilize dissatisfied workers. Our study offers an experimental test of whether positive (negative) recognition offered by symbolic "deservingness" appeals affect perceptions of in-group and outgroup (un)deservingness alongside other political outcomes. The study will be conducted in the UK, France and Germany with N = 2,000 in each country. The experimental design will be a survey-based, between-subject randomized controlled trial with complete random assignment to 5 groups. Subjects will be randomly exposed to either of six treatments in the format of a hypothetical post on X/Twitter from a member of the parliament: (1) positive recognition of workers’ contributions; (2) positive recognition of workers’ needs; (3) negative recognition of workers’ contributions; (4) negative recognition of workers’ needs; (5) placebo (a short description of the daily work routine of a member of the parliament); or (6) control (a thematically unrelated post by a member of parliament). First, subjects will have to give their voluntary consent to participate in the survey. Then, subjects will fill out a short pretreatment survey measuring their demographic, social, and political attributes. Then, they will be randomly assigned to control or treatment. After exposure to treatment, the following outcomes will be measured. First, we will measure post-related outcomes (agreement and sharing intentions). Second, we will measure affective attitudes towards the ingroup and outgroups (workers, the unemployed, immigrants, managers, and politicians), using feeling thermometers. Second, we will measure public support for policies in favor of workers (increase minimum wages, improve working conditions, decrease weekly working hours), the unemployed, refugees, and companies. Third, we will measure perceptions of deservingness for the main outgroups of interest (unemployed and refugees). Fourth, we will measure self-evaluations of social status and populist attitudes. Finally, we will measure emotions experienced by the respondent.

This article is from BMC Medical Ethics , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Psychiatric staff members have the power to decide the options that frame encounters with patients. Intentional as well as unintentional framing can have a crucial impact on patients’ opportunities to be heard and participate in the process. We identified three dominant ethical perspectives in the normative medical ethics literature concerning how doctors and other staff members should frame interactions in relation to patients; paternalism, autonomy and reciprocity. The aim of this study was to describe and analyse statements describing real work situations and ethical reflections made by staff members in relation to three central perspectives in medical ethics; paternalism, autonomy and reciprocity. Methods: All staff members involved with patients in seven adult psychiatric and six child and adolescent psychiatric clinics were given the opportunity to freely describe ethical considerations in their work by keeping an ethical diary over the course of one week and 173 persons handed in their diaries. Qualitative theory-guided content analysis was used to provide a description of staff encounters with patients and in what way these encounters were consistent with, or contrary to, the three perspectives. Results: The majority of the statements could be attributed to the perspective of paternalism and several to autonomy. Only a few statements could be attributed to reciprocity, most of which concerned staff members acting contrary to the perspective. The result is presented as three perspectives containing eight values.•Paternalism; 1) promoting and restoring the health of the patient, 2) providing good care and 3) assuming responsibility.•Autonomy; 1) respecting the patient’s right to self-determination and information, 2) respecting the patient’s integrity and 3) protecting human rights.•Reciprocity; 1) involving patients in the planning and implementation of their care and 2) building trust between staff and patients. Conclusions: Paternalism clearly appeared to be the dominant perspective among the participants, but there was also awareness of patients’ right to autonomy. Despite a normative trend towards reciprocity in psychiatry throughout the Western world, identifying it proved difficult in this study. This should be borne in mind by clinics when considering the need for ethical education, training and supervision.

The purpose of this effort was to examine a new theoretical framework called Facial Affect Reciprocity, which refers to the exchange of facial expressions among interactants across time, and the linkage between specific types of emotion. We examined whether different combinations of facial expressions of emotion of pairs of individuals engaged in an interactive game requiring cooperation and adaptation would be reliably related to objective performance data. Same-sex stranger dyads participated in three conditions of game play in three studies. The game used was a modified version of Prisoner's Dilemma, which was played in real time, in person, and with real money to maximize the interaction's effects on emotions and expressions. Facial affect reciprocity variables predicted the behavioral outcomes of the dyads above and beyond what could be predicted by the individual facial expression variables, as predicted. Surprisingly, however, it was not the exchange of emotional expressions per se that was the best predictor of the various outcomes; instead, it was the exchange of no emotions or neutrality that was the best predictor. These findings suggest a strong potential role for expression regulation in dyadic interchange, and they have important ramifications to theoretical and conceptual knowledge concerning the interpersonal functions of facial expressions of emotion. They also have important practical implications for emotion and expression regulation in team processes.

Longer warm-up periods of 1, 2 and 3 hrs yield a decrease in optical density of the darker wedge patterns; whereas, shorter warm-up times yield an overall increase in the optical densities.

Finding new phase is a fundamental task in physics. Landau's theory explained the deep connection between symmetry breaking and phase transition commonly occurring in magnetic, superconducting and super uid systems. The discovery of the quantum Hall effect led to Z topological phases which could be different for same symmetry and are characterized by the discrete values of the Berry phases. By studying 1D trimer lattices we report new phases characterized by Berry phases which are piecewise continuous rather than discrete numbers. The phase transition occurs at the discontinuity point. With time-dependent changes, trimer lattices also give a 2D phases characterized by very specific 2D Berry phases of half period. These Berry phases change smoothly within a phase while change discontinuously at the transition point. We further demonstrate the existence of adiabatic pumping for each phase and gain assisted enhanced pumping. The non-reciprocity of the pumping process makes the system a good optical diode.
