Emotion dysregulation has been considered a key factor for the development, the severity, and the persistence of symptoms in multiple psychiatric disorders (Dvir et al., 2014), such as anxiety disorders, major depression, eating disorders, substance related disorders, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder (Berking & Wupperman, 2012; See et al., 2022). Thus, improving emotion regulation has been the focus of many cognitive-behavioural psychotherapeutic interventions, such as dialectical behavioural therapy (Linehan, 2014) and schema therapy (Young et al., 2003), as well as psychodynamic interventions (Woll & Schönbrodt, 2020). On the neural level, it has been hypothesized that neural alterations associated with dysfunctional emotion regulation might be associated with impaired top-down control of prefrontal regions over limbic structures (Braunstein et al., 2017; Gyurak et al., 2011). For example, neural differences between psychiatric patients and healthy controls have been reported for fMRI-based connectivity measures between frontal and limbic structures (Baczkowski et al., 2017; De Wit et al., 2015; Fitzgerald et al., 2019; Park et al., 2019). Moreover, dysfunctional emotion regulation has been associated with hyperactivation of the amygdala (Picó‐Pérez et al., 2019; Pizzagalli & Roberts, 2022; Schulze et al., 2016) and hypoactivation of prefrontal brain regions (De Wit et al., 2015; Kjærstad et al., 2022; Mochcovitch et al., 2014). Those alterations in cortico-subcortical networks have been observed in patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (De Wit et al., 2015; Kammen et al., 2022; Picó‐Pérez et al., 2019), bipolar disorder (Kjærstad et al., 2022; Murray et al., 2022), major depression (Ebneabbasi et al., 2021; Park et al., 2019; Pizzagalli & Roberts, 2022), anxiety disorders (Fitzgerald et al., 2019; Mochcovitch et al., 2014), post-traumatic-stress-disorder (Herringa, 2017; Nicholson et al., 2017), borderline personality disorder (Bertsch et al., 2018; Kebets et al., 2021; Schulze et al., 2016), and substance use disorder (Albein‐Urios et al., 2014; Shen et al., 2017; Wilcox et al., 2016). Additional brain regions related to emotion regulation dysfunctions in psychiatric populations are the insula (Gong et al., 2020; Picó-Pérez et al., 2017; Zhang et al., 2022), the anterior cingulate cortex (Davis et al., 2018; Fitzgerald et al., 2019; Le et al., 2021), the orbito-frontal cortex (Kammen et al., 2022; Murray et al., 2022), and the ventral striatum (Kammen et al., 2022; Park et al., 2019; Pizzagalli & Roberts, 2022). To address emotion regulation dysfunction on the neural level, several techniques have been developed and explored for their capacity to modulate neuronal responses and/or to induce neuroplastic processes. Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-NF) is a novel technique enabling to visually represent and self-modulate the ongoing changes in specific brain regions, as well as the connectivity between them (Sitaram et al., 2007; Weiskopf et al., 2007). Within neural networks related to emotion regulation, it could be shown that even one session of rt-fMRI-NF resulted in modification of region-specific brain activity (Barreiros et al., 2019; Linhartová et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2022) and large-scale network connectivity (Orth et al., 2022; Young et al., 2018). Namely, modification of neural activation levels due to rt-fMRI-NF was demonstrated for the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex, the insula, and the anterior cingulate cortex for patients diagnosed with affective disorders (Barreiros et al., 2019; Park et al., 2019; Young et al., 2017), substance use disorder (Dave & Tripathi, 2022; Martz et al., 2020), borderline personality disorder (Herpertz et al., 2018), obsessive compulsive disorder (Buyukturkoglu et al., 2015; Gonçalves Ó et al., 2017), and post-traumatic stress disorder (Barreiros et al., 2019; Chiba et al., 2019; Nicholson et al., 2017). Thus, rt-fMRI-NF might function as a potential therapeutic tool, or as an add-on treatment, that is able to directly target the underlying neural mechanisms of emotion dysregulation. There has been a vastly increasing number of rt-fMRI-NF studies over the past decade (Zhang et al., 2022). However, previous reviews on emotion regulation have primarily addressed methodological aspects of rt-fMRI-NF (Barreiros et al., 2019; Linhartová et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2022). Yet, there is no systematic review or meta-analysis focussing on the clinical impact of emotion regulation related rt-fMRI-NF. However, evaluating the clinical impact is critical for the decision on whether rt-fMRI-NF may function as a therapeutic tool (Dudek & Dodell-Feder, 2021; González Méndez et al., 2022). Moreover, no systematic assessment of study quality has been conducted by previous reviews.

ACL2(r) is a variant of ACL2 that supports the irrational real and complex numbers. Its logical foundation is based on internal set theory (IST), an axiomatic formalization of non-standard analysis (NSA). Familiar ideas from analysis, such as continuity, differentiability, and integrability, are defined quite differently in NSA-some would argue the NSA definitions are more intuitive. In previous work, we have adopted the NSA definitions in ACL2(r), and simply taken as granted that these are equivalent to the traditional analysis notions, e.g., to the familiar epsilon-delta definitions. However, we argue in this paper that there are circumstances when the more traditional definitions are advantageous in the setting of ACL2(r), precisely because the traditional notions are classical, so they are unencumbered by IST limitations on inference rules such as induction or the use of pseudo-lambda terms in functional instantiation. To address this concern, we describe a formal proof in ACL2(r) of the equivalence of the traditional and non-standards definitions of these notions.

State issued driver's licenses and identification (DL/ID) cards are commonly accepted in the U.S. as a valid form of identification, and once obtained allow the holder access to move about the country legally. In order to prevent terrorists from illegally obtaining state issued DL/ID cards the 9/11 commission recommended the federal government establish national standards for the state issuance of DL/ID cards. The federal government responded to this recommendation by implementing the Real Id Act of 2005 (RIDA). The act establishes minimum standards for the issuance of state issued DL/ID cards. After reviewing the Act, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) made the following four key recommendations needed to successfully implement the law: 1) Ensure that document verification systems are available nationally, 2) Allow states to adopt up to a ten year reenrollment process, 3) Exempt certain populations from the RIDA process, and 4) Provide the necessary federal funding to comply with the law. Eugene Bardach's A Practical Guide for Policy Analysis provides an eightfold path to more effective problem solving. His model will be applied to assess the implementation of the Act and the four recommendations of the NCSL. Providing an analysis of the implementation of this policy from the federal government's perspective and the NCSL's perspective is essential in determining the best course of action for implementing RIDA. The policy implications scholars and decision makers derive from an analysis of RIDA are important for current and future U.S. Homeland Security policy decisions regarding identification security. This thesis will provide such an analysis.

Experiments of cell migration and chemotaxis assays have been classically performed in the so-called Boyden Chambers. A recent technology, xCELLigence Real Time Cell Analysis, is now allowing to monitor the cell migration in real time. This technology measures impedance changes caused by the gradual increase of electrode surface occupation by cells during the course of time and provide a Cell Index which is proportional to cellular morphology, spreading, ruffling and adhesion quality as well as cell number. In this paper we propose a macroscopic mathematical model, based on \emph{advection-reaction-diffusion} partial differential equations, describing the cell migration assay using the real-time technology. We carried out numerical simulations to compare simulated model dynamics with data of observed biological experiments on three different cell lines and in two experimental settings: absence of chemotactic signals (basal migration) and presence of a chemoattractant. Overall we conclude that our minimal mathematical model is able to describe the phenomenon in the real time scale and numerical results show a good agreement with the experimental evidences.

To date there are no statistics available about how many blind people use echolocation, but anecdotal reports in the literature suggest that perhaps between 20 and 30% of totally blind people may use it, suggesting that echolocation affords broad functional benefits. Consistent with the notion that blind individuals benefit from the use of echolocation, previous research conducted under controlled experimental conditions has shown that echolocation improves blind people's spatial sensing ability. The current study investigated if there is also evidence for functional benefits of echolocation in real life. To address this question the current study conducted an online survey. Thirty-seven blind people participated. Linear regression analyses of survey data revealed that, while statistically controlling for participants' gender, age, level of visual function, general health, employment status, level of education, Braille skill, and use of other mobility means, people who use echolocation have higher salary, and higher mobility in unfamiliar places, than people who do not use echolocation. The majority of our participants (34 out of 37) use the long cane, and all participants who reported to echolocate, also reported to use the long cane. This suggests that the benefit of echolocation that we found might be conditional upon the long cane being used as well. The investigation was correlational in nature, and thus cannot be used to determine causality. In addition, the sample was small (N = 37), and one should be cautious when generalizing the current results to the population. The data, however, are consistent with the idea that echolocation offers real-life advantages for blind people, and that echolocation may be involved in peoples' successful adaptation to vision loss.

Abstract Background: The selection of stably expressed reference genes is a prerequisite when evaluating gene expression, via real-time PCR, in cells in response to viral infections. The objective of our study was to identify suitable reference genes for mRNA expression analysis in chicken embryonic fibroblasts (CEF) after infection with avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J). Findings: The expression levels of 11 potential reference genes in CEF infected with ALV-J were determined by real-time PCR. The expression stability of these genes were analyzed and ranked using the geNorm tool. Analysis indicated that the genes RPL30 (ribosomal protein L30) and SDHA (succinate dehydrogenase complex, subunit A) were the most stably expressed genes in the ALV-J infected CEF. Conclusions: The RPL30 and SDHA were deemed suitable for use as reference genes for real-time PCR analysis of mRNA gene expression during ALV-J infection, whereas commonly used ACTB and GAPDH are unsuitable to be reference genes.

Abstract Human schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma japonicum and Schistosoma mekongi is a chronic and debilitating helminthic disease still prevalent in several countries of Asia. Due to morphological similarities of cercariae and eggs of these 2 species, microscopic differentiation is difficult. High resolution melting (HRM) real-time PCR is developed as an alternative tool for the detection and differentiation of these 2 species. A primer pair was designed for targeting the 18S ribosomal RNA gene to generate PCR products of 156 base pairs for both species. The melting points of S. japonicum and S. mekongi PCR products were 84.5±0.07℃ and 85.7±0.07℃, respectively. The method permits amplification from a single cercaria or an egg. The HRM real-time PCR is a rapid and simple tool for differentiation of S. japonicum and S. mekongi in the intermediate and final hosts.

Although equipment that makes measurements and controls on site is currently available, it is difficult to use techniques for temperature and humidity control in real time. This article implements and describes a temperature and humidity meter along with an automation system for real time verification of the nobreak and battery bank for industrial use. This design is used as an important tool in temperature monitoring with the purpose of avoiding the reduction of equipment life causing higher maintenance costs. Temperature and humidity meters were used to carry out the project, an arduino responsible for sending the data captured by the sensors to the database, and a web system that shows the data sent by the arduino in real time. The data obtained through the developed prototype were verified and compared in order to observe possible temperature changes in industrial environment. The measurements were compared to the temperatures indicated by the product manufacturer. With this it was attested that the prototype stored the temperature and humidity data and subsequently sent it to the web system correctly allowing thus a real time analysis of the temperature and humidity in which the equipment is submitted.

With this it was attested that the prototype stored the temperature and humidity data and subsequently sent it to the web system correctly allowing thus a real time analysis of the temperature and humidity in which the equipment is submitted.

This article is from Microbial Cell Factories , volume 12 . Abstract Background: Novel analytical tools, which shorten the long and costly development cycles of biopharmaceuticals are essential. Metabolic flux analysis (MFA) shows great promise in improving our understanding of the metabolism of cell factories in bioreactors, but currently only provides information post-process using conventional off-line methods. MFA combined with real time multianalyte process monitoring techniques provides a valuable platform technology allowing real time insights into metabolic responses of cell factories in bioreactors. This could have a major impact in the bioprocessing industry, ultimately improving product consistency, productivity and shortening development cycles. Results: This is the first investigation using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in situ combined with metabolic flux modelling which is both a significant challenge and considerable extension of these techniques. We investigated the feasibility of our approach using the industrial workhorse Pichia pastoris in a simplified model system. A parental P. pastoris strain (i.e. which does not synthesize recombinant protein) was used to allow definition of distinct metabolic states focusing solely upon the prediction of intracellular fluxes in central carbon metabolism. Extracellular fluxes were determined using off-line conventional reference methods and on-line NIR predictions (calculated by multivariate analysis using the partial least squares algorithm, PLS). The results showed that the PLS-NIRS models for biomass and glycerol were accurate: correlation coefficients, R2, above 0.90 and the root mean square error of prediction, RMSEP, of 1.17 and 2.90 g/L, respectively. The analytical quality of the NIR models was demonstrated by direct comparison with the standard error of the laboratory (SEL), which showed that performance of the NIR models was suitable for quantifying biomass and glycerol for calculating extracellular metabolite rates and used as independent inputs for the MFA (RMSEP lower than 1.5 × SEL). Furthermore, the results for the MFA from both datasets passed consistency tests performed for each steady state, showing that the precision of on-line NIRS is equivalent to that obtained by the off-line measurements. Conclusions: The findings of this study show for the first time the potential of NIRS as an input generating for MFA models, contributing to the optimization of cell factory metabolism in real-time.

A recently written computer program implements dominant-element-based gradient descent and dynamic initial learning rate (DOGEDYN), which was described in Method of Real-Time Principal-Component Analysis (NPO-40034) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 29, No. 1 (January 2005), page 59. To recapitulate: DOGEDYN is a method of sequential principal-component analysis (PCA) suitable for such applications as data compression and extraction of features from sets of data. In DOGEDYN, input data are represented as a sequence of vectors acquired at sampling times. The learning algorithm in DOGEDYN involves sequential extraction of principal vectors by means of a gradient descent in which only the dominant element is used at each iteration. Each iteration includes updating of elements of a weight matrix by amounts proportional to a dynamic initial learning rate chosen to increase the rate of convergence by compensating for the energy lost through the previous extraction of principal components. In comparison with a prior method of gradient-descent-based sequential PCA, DOGEDYN involves less computation and offers a greater rate of learning convergence. The sequential DOGEDYN computations require less memory than would parallel computations for the same purpose. The DOGEDYN software can be executed on a personal computer.
