The US Navy (:19) presents this film "Ready Now and Ready for Tomorrow", about the three T’s; the Terrier, Talos and Tartar surface to air missile systems, as well as other ship-borne missile systems including Sea Sparrow. This film begins with footage of innovations achieved following WWII. The US Navy sought to better prepare the ships for the world of tomorrow based upon the wars of the past. (Note: This film won a special gold medal award for ‘Best Picture of a National Theme’ as part of the International Film and TV 1968 film and TV Festival of New York.) It opens with sea to air, anti-aircraft combat footage from WWII (:54). White hot tracer bullets from AA guns fire at Kamikazes during the close of the Second World War. (1:09). A kamikaze zips by close to the camera (1:30) exploding on impact (1:33). Black smoke clouds fill the ship’s deck (1:40). The Navy played a vital role in winning the Second World War. After examining every aspect of the American effort in World War II, President Harry S. Truman and his military leadership team were convinced that the nation needed an independent military service to operate exclusively in the air domain. The legendary exploits of the US Army Air Forces in World War II demonstrated that airpower, through gaining and sustaining air superiority and providing close air support to ground forces, was a sine qua non for success in major land operations. Moreover, the Army Air Forces achievements established that air forces, through providing airlift, reconnaissance-based intelligence, and strategic bombing, could create important effects that were largely independent of tactical support and, in fact, could affect all levels of conflict, oftentimes simultaneously. These Army Air Forces contributions that were so valuable to the Allied victory are the very ones that today, seven decades after the end of World War II, still provide a shared identity and sense of purpose for Airmen, and make the US Air Force critical to the national defense.

The New Mexico Army National Guard has an Air Defense history. In the past thirty years the soldiers of the 111th Air Defense Brigade have diligently trained on the Duster, the Roland, the Chaparral, the Hawk, the Avenger and the Patriot systems. None of these units have been deployed to perform their war-time air defense mission. Due to the changing world climate, the Army is involved in a variety of missions around the world and at home. The New Mexico Army National Guard must become a relevant member of the team and transform part of its air defense organization to units that will meet their Country's call. The Army has a viable total force concept. It was the active and reserve components together that were successful in Desert Storm. Since that time this combined team has been deployed to numerous peace-keeping operations and domestic emergencies. Presently we are in a war against terrorism and our primary mission has become homeland security. The New Mexico Army National Guard has the responsibility to meet the full spectrum of missions. It has an opportunity to create a new type of Guard unit capable of deploying faster, training more efficiently and equipped to perform homeland security, domestic emergencies, peacekeeping operations and their war fighting mission. Times have changed and so should the New Mexico Army National Guard.
