Permanent magnets were irradiated to integrated neutron flux levels from 3.0 x 10 to the 17th to 4.0 x 10 to the 20th power epicadmium n/sq cm. In spite of this relatively high dose, Alnicos II, V and XII showed negligible change in properties whether irradiated at 60 C, 235 C, or 325 C. Cunico I, though affected, showed changes less than a threshold of radiation damage of + or - 10%. Cunife I and 3-1/2 Chromium Steel showed slight improvements in properties. The Barium Ferrites, Silmanal, 36 Cobalt Steel and others exceeded the 10% damage threshold by various amounts which extended up to severe demagnetization. Differentiation between temperature and radiation effects was accomplished by the use of control magnets, and by the 60 C irradiation. Limitations on the use of Alnicos II, V, XII and Cunico I in combined heat and nuclear radiation environments may be imposed by the higher vulnerability of associated soft magnetic circuit components, e.g., pole pieces of soft iron, to radiation damage and by high gamma heating which can occur if a magnetic circuit must be used in a sealed container (for protection from corrosion or other reasons). The Alnicos exhibit the highest resistance to radiation, while the barium ferrites show the least.

This paper documents an investigation into reports which have indicated that exposure to VHF and UHF band radiation has adverse effects on the frequency stability of HP cesium beam frequency standards. Tests carried out on the basis of these reports show that sources of VHF and UHF radiation such as two-way hand held police communications devices do cause reproducible adverse effects. This investigation examines reproducible effects and explores possible causes.

We explore a model in which QSO broad absorption lines (BALS) are formed in a radiation pressure-driven wind emerging from a magnetized accretion disk. The magnetic field threading the disk material is dragged by the flow and is compressed by the radiation pressure until it is dynamically important and strong enough to contribute to the confinement of the BAL clouds. We construct a simple self-similar model for such radiatively driven magnetized disk winds, in order to explore their properties. It is found that solutions exist for which the entire magnetized flow is confined to a thin wedge over the surface of the disk. For reasonable values of the mass-loss rate, a typical magnetic field strength such that the magnetic pressure is comparable to the inferred gas pressure in BAL clouds, and a moderate amount of internal soft X-ray absorption, we find that the opening angle of the flow is approximately 0.1 rad, in good agreement with the observed covering factor of the broad absorption line region.

Measurements of both the minority carrier lifetimes and the energy level spectrum of the defects are used to predict lifetime damage constants and carrier removal rates relevant to the operation of the solar lithium-doped cell and its annealing kinetics.

During high-velocity atmospheric entries, space vehicles can be exposed to strong electromagnetic radiation from ionized gas in the shock layer. Glassy carbon (GC) and silicon carbide (SiC) are candidate thermal protection materials due to their high melting point and also their good thermal and mechanical properties. Based on data from shock tube experiments, a significant fraction of radiation at hypersonic entry conditions is in the frequency range from 215 to 415 THz. We propose and analyze SiC and GC photonic structures to increase the reflection of radiation in that range. For this purpose, we performed numerical optimizations of various structures using an evolutionary strategy. Among the considered structures are layered, porous, woodpile, inverse opal and guided-mode resonance structures. In order to estimate the impact of fabrication inaccuracies, the sensitivity of the reflectivity to structural imperfections is analyzed. We estimate that the reflectivity of GC photonic structures is limited to 38% in the aforementioned range, due to material absorption. However, GC material can be effective for photonic reflection of individual, strong spectral line. SiC on the other hand can be used to design a good reflector for the entire frequency range.

Electrons in the earths outer radiation belt

Two dimensional source locations of individual terrestrial kilometric radiation (TKR) events were measured by the Radio Astronomy Explorer-2 (RAE-2) spacecraft in lunar orbit. Although the average source location is above the polar regions near the earth there are a significant number of events which occur at 7 RE from the earth. Furthermore, there is considerable evidence for multiple sources and source motion over the time scale of tens of minutes. Recent TKR mechanism theories which assume that the emission occurs at or near the local electron gyrofrequency would predict generation much closer to the earth's surface. It was suggested that alternative emission mechanisms (other than gyroemission) are required to explain all TKR events.

The external (surface incident) charged particle radiation, predicted for the ST satellite at the three different mission altitudes, was determined in two ways: (1) by orbital flux-integration and (2) by geographical instantaneous flux-mapping. The latest standard models of the environment were used in this effort. Magnetic field definitions for three nominal circular trajectories and for the geographic mapping positions were obtained from a current field model. Spatial and temporal variations or conditions affecting the static environment models were considered and accounted for, wherever possible. Limited shielding and dose evaluations were performed for a simple geometry. Results, given in tabular and graphical form, are analyzed, explained, and discussed. Conclusions are included.

The RF radiation produced during intracloud lightning flashes is presented, together with associated fast and slow electric field changes. These data were collected during the Thunderstorm Research International Project in Florida during the summer of 1977. The RF radiation is essentially simultaneous with the fast-field change but has a tendency to peak during the initial half-cycle of the bipolar field changes associated cloud processes. This is in marked contrast to previous observations of RF radiation during return strokes in cloud-to-ground discharges and provides a clue to the physics of the intracloud discharge.

Costs for capable test equipment can run more than $1M for full testing.

With the objective to retrospectively analyze whether these tests continue to arouse the curiosity of researchers and whether the global results show a clear effect on the increase in the frequency of micronuclei, we carried out a systematic, scientometric and metanalytic review, where we surveyed the literature by internet searches from 1992 to 2021, we identified 2601 articles on the topic, of which 36 articles were selected that had complete data for the meta-analysis. in the scientometric analysis we found authors and journals mainly from the European Community, that dedicate themselves to the theme more frequently, through the association of the themes and words found, we were able to develop the organization of the meta-analysis question (PECO) Population, Exposure, Comparisons, Outcomes, after analyzing the data of the papers, we evidenced the existence of a marked degree of heterogeneity of it, but with evidence of a consistent influence of the IR on the formation of micronuclei in the exposed populations, this heterogeneity probably related to methodological processes associated with population differences, laboratory and dosimeter deficiencies and absence of data on confounding factors (smoking, alcohol), we also identified evidence of publication bias, but as we would only be able to get rid of bias if it we could model the bias, which is an impossible task, and there is no way to be immune to it. We suggest the standardization of the methodology as global efforts have been carrying out, the HUman Micro Nucleus (HUMN) project, the adequate use of dosimetry and when this fails the frequency of micronucleus can be used as a consolidated biomonitor.

The system includes a three mode, two-input optical signal processor, interconnecting cable, and four sensor heads. Two of the heads are aperture type, while the other two are lens type. The diversity of albedos and surface colors on observed Kuiper Belt and Inner Oort Cloud objects remains to be explained in terms of competition between primordial intrinsic versus exogenic drivers of surface and near-surface evolution. Earlier models have attempted without success to attribute this diversity to the relations between surface radiolysis from cosmic ray irradiation and gardening by meteoritic impacts. A more flexible approach considers the different depth-dependent radiation profiles produced by low-energy plasma, suprathermal, and maximally penetrating charged particles of the heliospheric and local interstellar radiation environments. Generally red objects of the dynamically cold (low inclination, circular orbit) Classical Kuiper Belt might be accounted for from erosive effects of plasma ions and reddening effects of high energy cosmic ray ions, while suprathermal keV-MeV ions could alternatively produce more color neutral surfaces. The deepest layer of more pristine ice can be brought to the surface from meter to kilometer depths by larger impact events and potentially by cryovolcanic activity. The bright surfaces of some larger objects, e.g. Eris, suggest ongoing resurfacing activity. Interactions of surface irradiation, resultant chemical oxidation, and near-surface cryogenic fluid reservoirs have been proposed to account for Enceladus cryovolcanism and may have further applications to other icy irradiated bodies. The diversity of causative processes must be understood to account for observationally apparent diversities of the object surfaces.

The radiation length in air, was studied. Calculations were finished and give new values for t sub o in atomic oxygen and nitrogen which are entirely free of dependence on the Thomas-Fermi approximate model. With the usual small corrections for atmospheric A and CO2, these give t sub o air = 37.15 g cm/2, in close agreement with a value recommended, but in contrast to t sub o air = 36.66 g cm/2 obtained using the Thomas-Fermi approximation.

In the Radiation Counting Laboratory sixty feet underground at JSC, Dr. Robert S. Clark prepares to load pieces of iridium foil - sandwiched between plastic sheets - into the laboratory's radiation detector. The iridium foil strips were worn by the crew of the second Skylab flight in personal radiation dosimeters throughout their 59.5 days in space. Inside the radiation detector assembly surrounded by 28 tons of lead shielding, the sample will be tested to determine the total neutron dose to which the astronauts were exposed during their long stay aboard the space station.

This report describes work performed in the development of a dielectrically isolated integrated circuit process for fabricating radiation hardened integrated circuits. The improved process, called PEDIC (Post Epitaxial Dielectrically Isolated Circuits), provides advantages over standard DI processes: radiation tolerant improvements, lower cost, faster turnaround time, better electrical performance, and greater packing density. Electrical test data from a 2-input NAND gate circuit fabricated in the PEDIC structure is also given. (Author)

As society's use of radiation-producing technologies increases, so does the need to create more effective and versatile radiation detectors. Low-cost, low-power, compact radiation detectors are applicable across an ever-growing range of fields and industries. Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and other printed fabrication technology can enable future mass production of versatile radiation sensors while maintaining reliability and low costs. By utilizing the electronic nose framework, combining an array of sensors to low-cost computing, we propose a new method of robust real-time radiation detection. This thesis explores both the fabrication process of MEMS sensors and the testing of various new materials designed to respond to gamma and neutron irradiation. Through three iterations of sensor creation at Naval Postgraduate School and NASA, and subsequent testing of those sensors, a sensor combining carbon nanotubes and boron-nitride nanotubes successfully registered thermal neutron irradiation. A different sensor, combining MEMS capacitors with varying dielectric materials, did not register gamma irradiation during testing. The neutron detection results simply confirmed the presence of neutron irradiation. We recommend future testing to measure specific response to energy and fluence of neutrons, to redesign the MEMS chip and to change the dielectric detection materials.
