Quo Vadis (Latin for “Where are you going?”) is an American historical epic drama film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in Technicolor and theatrically released on November 8, 1951. The film was set in the year 64 A. D. in Ancient Rome, was produced by Sam Zimbalist, directed by Mervyn LeRoy and is based on the novel of the same name by Henryk Sienkiewicz. This film actually saved MGM Studios from bankruptcy. Marcus Vinicius (Robert Taylor), Commander of the 14th Roman Legion, returns from Britain and Gaul and falls in love with a Lygian hostage (although according to the theatrical trailer, she was called a slave girl, which is wrong!) named Lygia (Deborah Kerr). Marcus must face multiple challenges such as Nero (Peter Ustinov) as Emperor of Rome, the city bursting into flames, and man-eating lions. Before some of the Christian subjects get thrown to the lions, Marcus’ uncle Gaius Petronius (Leo Genn) and Spanish Christian slave girl Eunice (Marina Berti) commit suicide, despite Eunice being freed. After the lions have had their meals, other Christian subjects such as General Aulus Plautius (Felix Aylmer) get burned/crucified on crosses! Later, Lygia gets tied up in the arena, and Ursus (Buddy Baer) must face a bull in a fight against death, but he kills the bull, Marcus and his tribune, Fabius Nerva (Norman Wooland) free Lygia, and Marcus does a short speech about Nero’s antics and General Galba (Pietro Tordi) taking Nero’s place as Emperor of Rome. Tigellinus (Ralph Truman), Prefect of the Praetorian Guard, gets stabbed to death by a sword. Back at the palace, Nero kills his second wife, the Empress Poppaea (Patricia Laffan) by strangling her. After Poppaea dies, Nero must die by stabbing himself in the chest with a dagger, but he can’t do it without help from Acte (Rosalie Crutchley). With General Galba as new Emperor of Rome,  Marcus, Lygia, Ursus and Nazarius (Peter Miles) head to Sicily. The film ends with the words, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”. The Quo Vadis School of Nursing, established in 1964, offers a two year program which prepares candidates to qualify as Registered Nurses; the unique feature of the school is that it accepts only mature students--between 30 and 50 years of age. The research program of the School was intended as a 10-year study with special emphasis on this unique feature. This interim report covers the time from the establishment of the School until the graduation of the third class; it consists of a review of research design and methods, a summary of findings and of implications, and a detailed summary of findings of a questionnaire designed to study problems of adjustment. Students who had been highly mobile were found not to adjust to the school as expected. Age was the least significant variable studied; and marital status seems to be a crucial variable. Those students who had had post-secondary education in the area of health (excluding nursing) adjusted well and were self confident. The middle I.Q. group adjusted better than the low or the high. A large group of the students lacked self confidence even into their professional experience. (EB)

Nanoporous membranes based on self-assembled block polymer precursors are an emerging class of promising separation,purification, and sensing devices due to the ability of researchers to control the nanostructure and chemistry of these multifunctional materials and devices. In fact, modern polymer chemistry provides techniques for the facile, controlled synthesis of the block polymers that constitute these devices. These designer macromolecules, in turn, can then self-assemble into functional nanostructures depending upon the chemical identity of the synthesized block polymers and the thin film fabrication methods employed. After fabrication, these nanoporous membranes offer a highly tunable platform for applications that require high throughput, high surface area, homogeneous pore size, and varying material properties. And, with these readily tunable chemical and structural properties, block polymer membranes will allow for significant improvements in myriad applications. In this Review, we summarize the key advances, with a specific emphasis on the previous 5 years of work, that have allowed block polymer-based membranes to reach their current level of technology. Furthermore, we project how these state-of-art, self-assembled block polymer membrane technologies can be utilized in present-day and future application arenas. In this way, we aim to demonstrate that the rigorous work performed on block polymer-based membranes has laid a strong foundation that will allow these macromolecular systems to: (1) be major avenues of fundamental scientific research and (2) be parlayed into transferable technologies for the betterment of society in the imminent future.

Quo vadis? è un film del 1912 diretto da Enrico Guazzoni, tratto dall'omonimo romanzo di Henryk Sienkiewicz. Questo film è uno dei primi casi dove la produzione ha fatto uso di innumerevoli comparse, di sfarzose scenografie e di set tridimensionali (e non solo più teli dipinti) che, per l'occasione, ricreavano l'antica Roma. Le riprese sono durate due mesi per 2.250 metri di pellicola e due ore di proiezione che codificheranno i criteri per i superspettacoli a venire del decennio. Da molti critici cinematografici italiani, è considerato uno dei primi kolossal della storia del cinema se non addirittura il primo. La pellicola riscosse un successo internazionale: fu il primo film a essere proiettato in un teatro di serie A di Broadway con nove mesi di proiezioni continuate da aprile a dicembre, a Londra venne dato in prima davanti al re Giorgio V che si complimentò con gli interpreti, tanto da portare Guazzoni a insistere sulla strada del dramma storico.

The purpose of this study was to determine how many of the Junior Division students at the Baton Rouge Campus of Louisiana State University who had expressed an interest in majoring in education in 1975 had actually begun studies in 1976, had switched to other majors, or had not continued beyond the first year. Comparisons were made (1) between the American College Test (ACT) scores of students in the Junior Division in 1975 opting for education and the ACT scores of the Junior Division total population; (2) between the ACT scores of those who actually had enrolled in the College of Education and those who enrolled in other curriculum areas; and (3) between the ACT scores of students in various curriculum areas within the College of Education. Data from the study indicate that education majors enrolled in the Junior Division in fall 1975 who subsequently enrolled in the College of Education by fall 1976 had a mean ACT score (19.3) of 0.6 of a point above the 1975 national mean and 2.0 above the 1975 state mean. ABSTRACT & RÉSUMÉ : Every three years, the AU-EU summit reunites African and EU leaders to outline the future direction of cooperation. The 6th summit had been to reaffirm and renew the partnership between the two blocks already in October 2020, but it was pushed back to the first quarter of 2021 or even later due to COVID-19 crisis. Besides, Brussels had to deal with its own post-Brexit situation and its repercussions on EU-Africa relations, excluding the UK. African states, for their part, wanted to renegotiate the EU-Africa partnership and to balance it with new promising Post-Brexit visions of the British premier Johnson about increased economic ties with the African Angloshere. China and other global players compete with the EU and its member states in the new scramble for African resources. Given that Africa is increasingly courted by other partners it could be inclined to successively limit its relations with the EU and see it as a mere provider of aid and security against Islamic terrorism. This trend was reinforced by the fact that the new EU-Africa strategy still hasn't been approved by EU member states. Le 6e sommet devait réaffirmer et renouveler le partenariat entre les deux blocs déjà en octobre 2020, mais il a été repoussé au premier trimestre 2021, ou même plus tard, en raison de la crise du COVID-19. En outre, Bruxelles a dû faire face à sa propre situation post-Brexit, compte tenu l'exclusion du Royaume-Uni, et à ses répercussions sur les relations UE-Afrique. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass Afrika zunehmend von anderen Partnern umworben wird, könnte es dazu neigen, seine Beziehungen zur EU sukzessive einzuschränken und die EU als bloßen Anbieter von Hilfe und Sicherheit gegen den islamischen Terrorismus zu betrachten. Dieser Trend wurde noch dadurch verstärkt, dass die neue EU-Afrika-Strategie von den EU-Mitgliedstaaten noch nicht gebilligt wurde. The conference Quo Vadis, Graph Theory was held on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus August 13-16, 1990. The conference had 77 participants. Forty three were American citizens. Four came from industry. Two from the US- government. One from the Office of Naval Research as well as one from the Naval Postgraduate School. Other countries with representatives at the conference are Canada, Italy, Israel, Denmark, Rumania, South Africa, France, Germany, Poland, England and Hungary. One of the principal goals of the conference was to encourage active participation by women. In this, we were very successful; 20 women attended. Also, we wished to emphasize the importance of graph theory in education. In this we were very successful. Some interesting lectures were given and a very good discussion ensued which included some insightful remarks from some of our foreign participants on the educational techniques used in their countries. Also, we had many non-graph theorists participate, including many professors from the University of Alaska and a graduate student in math education from New York City.
