Peru's government has sent 500 troops to stop a violent protest over a mining project. Two civilians and a police officer have been killed in the violence between farmers in the southern coastal valley and a copper mining project the farmers say is polluting their crops. The troops will reinforce 2,000 local police in guarding strategic locations including bridges and gas stations. The copper mine owners claim the water used in the plant will be desalinated and water used in the processing would be pumped into the Pacific Ocean. Mining provides 62 percent of Peru's export revenues.

The accretion/ejection coupling in accreting black hole binaries has been described by empirical relations between the X-ray/radio and X-ray/optical-infrared luminosities. These correlations were initially thought to be universal. However, recently many sources have been found to produce jets that, given certain accretion-powered luminosities, are fainter than expected from the earlier correlations. This shows that black holes with similar accretion flows can produce a broad range of outflows in power, suggesting that some other parameters might be tuning the accretion/ejection coupling. Recent work has already shown that this jet power does not correlate with the reported black hole spin measurements. Here we discuss whether fixed parameters of the binary system, as well as the properties of the outburst, produce any effect on the energy output in the jet. No obvious dependence is found. We also show that there is no systematic variation of the slope of the radio:X-ray correlation with normalization. We define a jet-toy model in which the bulk Lorentz factor becomes larger than ~1 above ~0.1% of the Eddington luminosity. With this model, if we assume random inclination angles which result in highly variable boosting at large Eddington ratios, we are able to reproduce qualitatively the scatter of the X-ray/radio correlation and the radio quiet population. However the model seems to be at odds with some other observed properties of the systems. We also compare the radio quiet black holes with the neutron stars. We show that if a mass correction from the fundamental plane is applied, the possibility that they are statistically indistinguishable in the X-ray:radio plane can not be completely ruled out. This result suggests that some of the outliers could actually be neutron stars, or that the disc-jet coupling in the radio quiet black holes is more similar to the one in neutron stars.

Understanding the interplay between black-hole accretion and star formation, and how to disentangle the two, is crucial to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. To investigate, we use a combination of optical and near-infrared photometry to select a sample of 74 quasars from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) Survey, over 1 deg$^2$. The depth of VIDEO allows us to study very low accretion rates and/or lower-mass black holes, and 26 per cent of the candidate quasar sample has been spectroscopically confirmed. We use a radio-stacking technique to sample below the nominal flux-density threshold using data from the Very Large Array at 1.4 GHz and find, in agreement with other work, that a power-law fit to the quasar-related radio source counts is inadequate at low flux density. By comparing with a control sample of galaxies (where we match in terms of stellar mass), and by estimating the star formation rate, we suggest that this radio emission is predominantly caused by accretion activity rather than star-formation activity.

We describe a new quiet-Sun phenomenon which we call "Quiet-Sun Ellerman-like Brightenings" (QSEB). QSEBs are similar to Ellerman bombs (EB) in some respects but differ significantly in others. EBs are transient brightenings of the wings of the Balmer H-alpha line that mark strong-field photospheric reconnection in complex active regions. QSEBs are similar but smaller and less intense Balmer-wing brightenings that occur in quiet areas away from active regions. In the H-alpha wing we measure typical lengths of less than 0.5 arcsec, widths of 0.21 arcsec, and lifetimes of less than a minute. We discovered them using high-quality H-alpha imaging spectrometry from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) and show that in lesser-quality data they cannot be distinguished from more ubiquitous facular brightenings, nor in the ultraviolet diagnostics currently available from space platforms. We add evidence from concurrent SST spectropolarimetry that QSEBs also mark photospheric reconnection events, but in quiet regions on the solar surface.

We study the random K-satisfiability problem using a partition function where each solution is reweighed according to the number of variables that satisfy every clause. We apply belief propagation and the related cavity method to the reweighed partition function. This allows us to obtain several new results on the properties of random K-satisfiability problem. In particular the reweighing allows to introduce a planted ensemble that generates instances that are, in some region of parameters, equivalent to random instances. We are hence able to generate at the same time a typical SAT instance and one of its solutions. We study the relation between clustering and belief propagation fixed points and we give a direct evidence for the existence of purely entropic (rather than energetic) barriers between clusters in some region of parameters in the random K-satisfiability problem. We show explicitly how to find solutions of random K-SAT leading to a non-trivial whitening core; such solutions were known to exist but were so far never found on large instances. Finally, we discuss algorithmic hardness of such planted instances and determine a region of parameters in which planting leads to satisfiable benchmarks that, up to our knowledge, are the hardest known.
