2SIMULATION AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF MULTI HOP CELLULAR NETWORKS (MNCS) OVER SINGLE HOP CELLULAR NETWORKS (SCNS): A QUEUEING MODEL APPROACH
By Neeta Singh1, 2, R. L. Sharma1 and Poonam Verma2Neeta Singh, R. L. Sharma and Poonam Verma
Multi-hop Cellular Network (MCN) possesses the unique feature of having a fixed infrastructure of Base Station (BS) along with the flexibility of ad-hoc networks. This feature of MCN makes it more suitable for upcoming requirement of cellular network but at the time it increases the overheads required for communication, thus increasing the overall delay. In this paper, a queuing model has been developed to analyze the current cellular network and MCN in terms of Average Waiting Time (AWT) and Channel Utilization. Both the networks consider two types of traffic, namely, voice and data, each prioritizing the voice calls over data traffic. The simulations result is carried out using MATLAB-Simulink. Discrete Event Systems (DES) has been proven to be an effective tool for the study of large and complex systems. The simulation results clearly depict the significance of each network with respect to time.

3DTIC ADA242364: Delay Analysis For Multidimensional Queueing Process In CSMA/CD Local Area Networks
By Defense Technical Information Center
A CSMA/CD local area network consists of single server (the channel) and multiple interacting queues of message packets. The message queueing process in a buffered, P-persistent CSMA/CD system is modeled as a multidimensional semi-markov chain. An effective approximation method to compute the mean packet delay in equilibrium is developed, based on the joint probability generating function of the queue length vector at embedded Markov epochs. We also develop a simulation model to validate approximation results. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first in the literature that enables optimization of the control parameter P for the CSMA/CD system with more than two users. (Author)

4DTIC ADA204444: Parametric Analysis Of Queueing Networks With Blocking
By Defense Technical Information Center
Queueing networks with blocking have experienced a dramatic increase in their importance regarding performance evaluation of computer system and communication networks. Parametric Analysis is very interesting for cases in which only one station (e.g., a CPU) in a queueing network model is to be analyzed under various system washload. In order to execute parametric analysis of queueing networks with blocking the problem Computation of the Throughput Values of the Finite Capacity Subsystem is solved. The accuracy of the method has been validated by simulation of several test cases.

5DTIC ADA1029927: Queueing Network Analysis In Software Physics,
By Defense Technical Information Center
Queueing network models have achieved a prominent place in the modelling of computer system performance. Recent formulations of operational methods by Buzen and others have greatly facilitated their practical use. On the other hand, Kolence's software physics has addressed the problem of appropriate metrics for both performance and capacity of processors and systems and for the workloads with which they interact. This paper integrates the methods of operational queueing network analysis into an extension of software physics. A significant feature of this approach is that parameters of the equipment and of the workload are not confounded in the analysis but are kept distinct, finally combining in the model computations proper. The objectives, principles and assumptions are stated and the basic quantities are defined. The fundamental operational laws and certain of the algorithms are derived and illustrated with examples. 10DTIC ADA361701: Analysis Of A Non-Trivial Queueing Network
By Defense Technical Information Center
In studying complex queueing networks, one generally seeks to employ exact analytic solutions to reduce burden on computational resources. Barring the existence of an exact solution, the alternatives include approximation techniques and simulation. Approximation is the more attractive alternative from a time and effort perspective; however, cases exist that are not amiable to this technique. This work increases the flexibility of approximation techniques in obtaining estimates of congestion measures for complex, open queueing networks having several customer classes and class-dependent structures. We accomplish this by providing the procedure to aggregate multiple classes into a single class in order to apply an existing approximation technique. The resulting method is shown to yield good agreement with results obtained by simulation. The immediate application of this work is as a tool to focus a simulation study of multi-class queueing networks. For large networks, reasonable performance estimates can be obtained quickly. Once the basic input parameters are determined, different scenarios may be rapidly evaluated in a fraction of the time needed to modify a typical simulation model. This allows one to check ideas and determine where to invest time and funding when constructing a simulation model to obtain performance estimates on a by-class basis.

12DTIC ADA206840: Parametric Analysis Of Queueing Networks With Blocking
By Defense Technical Information Center
As we already observed in the investigation of queueing networks with blocking that the throughout is a non-decreasing function of the number of jobs (3), i.e., the blocking events have the effect of violating the throughout results. Two questions arose from this observation: 1) How to distribute the total buffer capacity to the stations such that no deadlock will occur and a maximum (optional) throughout will be achieved?; and 2) Given the buffer capacity of each station in the network. How to select the total number of jobs in the network such that the throughput will be maximum (optimum)? To answer these questions first we assumed that all stations have infinite capacity and derived new formulas for optimal throughput and response times based on the well-known mean value analysis approach (4). Then in (5( we found necessary and sufficient conditions for buffer allocation in the cyclic networks with blocking such that an optimal throughput will be achieved.

13Analysis Of The Optimal Resource Allocation For A Tandem Queueing System
By Liu Zaiming, Chen Gang and Wu Jinbiao
In this paper, we study a controllable tandem queueing system consisting of two nodes and a controller, in which customers arrive according to a Poisson process and must receive service at both nodes before leaving the system. A decision maker dynamically allocates the number of service resource to each node facility according to the number of customers in each node. In the model, the objective is to minimize the long-run average costs. We cast these problems as Markov decision problems by dynamic programming approach and derive the monotonicity of the optimal allocation policy and the relationship between the two nodes' optimal policy. Furthermore, we get the conditions under which the optimal policy is unique and has the bang-bang control policy property.

14A Section-Based Queueing-Theoretical Traffic Model For Congestion And Travel Time Analysis In Networks
By Dirk Helbing
While many classical traffic models treat the spatial extension of streets continuously or by discretization into cells of a certain length, we will subdivide roads into comparatively long homogeneous road sections of constant capacity with an inhomogeneity at the end. The related model is simple and numerically efficient. It is inspired by models of dynamic queueing networks and takes into account essential features of traffic flows. Instead of treating single vehicles or velocity profiles, it focusses on flows at specific cross sections and average travel times of vehicles.

Packet arrivals are blocked (lost) if the system has a finite capacity and is congested. Using the theory of semiregenerative processes, the distribution of the number of packets in the system (system size) is found. This nonstationary distribution is used to determine the complete system behavior, including the delay distributions, the blocking probability, and the density of the system size at arrival instants. Numerical examples illustrate applications of the results given.

18DTIC ADA141175: B-1B Avionics/Automatic Test Equipment: Maintenance Queueing Analysis.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The purpose of this research effort was to develop a technique to determine B-1B automatic test equipment station quantities required to support the B-1B avionics components at base level. As part of this effort, both simulation and analytical solutions were developed. A detailed and complex simulation model was developed in the Q-GERT simulation language. In addition, an analytical model was developed based on the theory of open queueing networks and other queueing techniques. However, the analytical model required many crude and simplifying assumptions, and the analytical results were not entirely satisfactory. The Q-GERT simulation model was selected as the best choice for the remainder of the research effort. Two techniques were developed to determine test station quantities based on the model output. The first technique was to buy sufficient test stations to achieve a four day maximum base repair cycle time for the avionics components. The second technique was to conduct a cost-benefit analysis by comparing the costs of additional test stations (and the benefits of shorter repair cycle times) to the benefits of fewer test stations (and the costs of longer repair cycle times). Considerable sensitivity analysis was performed with the simulation model, and the research effort concludes with a range of management options for consideration by the B-1B System Program Office. 19Queueing Theoretical Analysis Of Foreign Currency Exchange Rates
By Jun-ichi Inoue and Naoya Sazuka
We propose a useful approach for investigating the statistical properties of foreign currency exchange rates. Our approach is based on queueing theory, particularly, the so-called renewal-reward theorem. For the first passage processes of the Sony Bank US dollar/Japanese yen (USD/JPY) exchange rate, we evaluate the average waiting time which is defined as the average time that customers have to wait between any instant when they want to observe the rate (e.g. when they log in to their computer systems) and the next rate change. We find that the assumption of exponential distribution for the first-passage process should be rejected and that a Weibull distribution seems more suitable for explaining the stochastic process of the Sony Bank rate. Our approach also enables us to evaluate the expected reward for customers, i.e. one can predict how long customers must wait and how much reward they will obtain by the next price change after they log in to their computer systems. We check the validity of our prediction by comparing it with empirical data analysis.

20Queueing Analysis Of A Large-Scale Bike Sharing System Through Mean-Field Theory
By Quan-Lin Li, Chang Chen, Rui-Na Fan, Liang Xu and Jing-Yu Ma
The bike sharing systems are fast increasing as a public transport mode in urban short trips, and have been developed in many major cities around the world. A major challenge in the study of bike sharing systems is that large-scale and complex queueing networks have to be applied through multi-dimensional Markov processes, while their discussion always suffers a common difficulty: State space explosion. For this reason, this paper provides a mean-field computational method to study such a large-scale bike sharing steps: Firstly, a multi-dimensional Markov process is set up for expressing the states of the bike sharing system, and the empirical process of the multi-dimensional Markov process is given to partly overcome the difficulty of state space explosion. Based on this, the mean-field equations are derived by means of a virtual time-inhomogeneous M(t)/M(t)/1/K queue whose arrival and service rates are determined by the mean-field computation. Secondly, the martingale limit is employed to investigate the limiting behavior of the empirical process, the fixed point is proved to be unique so that it can be computed by means of a nonlinear birth-death process, the asymptotic independence of this system is discussed simply, and specifically, these lead to numerical computation of the steady-state probability of the problematic (empty or full) stations. Finally, some numerical examples are given for valuable observation on how the steady-state probability of the problematic stations depends on some crucial parameters of the bike sharing system.

21DTIC ADA1029923: Queueing Network Analysis In Software Physics,
By Defense Technical Information Center
22Queueing Analysis In Multiuser Multi-Packet Transmission Systems Using Spatial Multiplexing
By Boris Bellalta, Azadeh Faridi, Jaume Barcelo, Vanesa Daza and Miquel Oliver
Multiuser Multi-Packet Transmission (MPT) from an Access Point (AP) equipped with multiple antennas to multiple single antenna nodes can be achieved by exploiting the spatial dimension of the channel. In this paper we present a queueing model to analytically study such systems from the link-layer perspective, in presence of random packet arrivals and heterogeneous channel conditions. The analysis relies on a blind estimation of the number of different destinations among the packets waiting in the queue, which allows for building a simple, but general model for MPT systems. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the analytical model and provide further insights on the cross-relations between the channel state, the number of antennas, and the number of active users, as well as how they affect the system performance. The simplicity and accuracy of the model makes it suitable for the evaluation of link-layer protocols supporting multiuser MPT in non-saturation conditions, where the queueing dynamics play an important role on the achieved performance.

23Asymptotic Analysis Of Losses In The $GI/M/m/n$ Queueing System As $n$ Increases To Infinity
By Vyacheslav M. Abramov
The paper studies asymptotic behavior of the loss probability for the $GI/M/m/n$ queueing system as $n$ increases to infinity. The approach of the paper is based on applications of classic results of Tak\'acs (1967) and the Tauberian theorem with remainder of Postnikov (1979-1980) associated with the recurrence relation of convolution type. The main result of the paper is associated with asymptotic behavior of the loss probability. Specifically it is shown that in some cases (precisely described in the paper) where the load of the system approaches 1 from the left and $n$ increases to infinity, the loss probability of the $GI/M/m/n$ queue becomes asymptotically independent of the parameter $m$.

25DTIC ADA444295: Information Theoretic Analysis For A General Queueing System At Equilibrium With Application To Queues In Tandem
By Defense Technical Information Center
In this paper, information theoretic inference methodology for system modeling is applied to estimate the probability distribution for the number of customers in a general, single server queueing system with infinite capacity utilized by an infinite customer population. Limited to knowledge of only the mean number of customers and system equilibrium, entropy maximization is used to obtain an approximation for the number of customers in the G{G}1 queue. This maximum entropy approximation is exact for the case of G=M i.e., the M{M}1 queue. Subject to both independent and dependent information, an estimate for the joint customer distribution for queueing systems in tandem is presented. Based on the simulation of two queues in tandem, numerical comparisons of the joint maximum entropy distribution is given. These results serve to establish the validity of the inference technique and as an introduction to information theoretic approximation to queueing networks.

29Transient Analysis Of A Resource-limited Recovery Policy For Epidemics: A Retrial Queueing Approach
By Aresh Dadlani, Muthukrishnan Senthil Kumar, Kiseon Kim and Faryad Darabi Sahneh
Knowledge on the dynamics of standard epidemic models and their variants over complex networks has been well-established primarily in the stationary regime, with relatively little light shed on their transient behavior. In this paper, we analyze the transient characteristics of the classical susceptible-infected (SI) process with a recovery policy modeled as a state-dependent retrial queueing system in which arriving infected nodes, upon finding all the limited number of recovery units busy, join a virtual buffer and try persistently for service in order to regain susceptibility. In particular, we formulate the stochastic SI epidemic model with added retrial phenomenon as a finite continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) and derive the Laplace transforms of the underlying transient state probability distributions and corresponding moments for a closed population of size $N$ driven by homogeneous and heterogeneous contacts. Our numerical results reveal the strong influence of infection heterogeneity and retrial frequency on the transient behavior of the model for various performance measures.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830010018: Queueing Analysis Of A Canonical Model Of Real-time Multiprocessors
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A logical classification of multiprocessor structures from the point of view of control applications is presented. A computation of the response time distribution for a canonical model of a real time multiprocessor is presented. The multiprocessor is approximated by a blocking model. Two separate models are derived: one created from the system's point of view, and the other from the point of view of an incoming task.

33DTIC ADA170303: Queueing Analysis Of Fault-Tolerant Computer Systems.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This paper analyzes a fault-tolerant computer system. The failure/repair behavior of the system is modeled by an irreducible continuous-time Markov chain. Jobs arrive in a Poisson fashion to the system and are serviced according to an FCFS discipline. A failure may cause the loss of the work already done on the job in service, if any; in this case the interrupted job is repeated as soon as the system is ready to deliver service. In addition to the delays due to failures and repairs, jobs suffer delays due to queueing. The authors presents a queueing analysis of fault-tolerant systems and study the steady-state behavior of the number of jobs in the system. As a numerical example, they consider a system with two processors subject to failures and repairs. (Author)

34DTIC ADA1029922: Queueing Network Analysis In Software Physics,
By Defense Technical Information Center
36A Queueing Network Approach To The Analysis And Control Of Mobility-On-Demand Systems
By Rick Zhang and Marco Pavone
This paper presents a queueing network approach to the analysis and control of mobility-on-demand (MoD) systems for urban personal transportation. A MoD system consists of a fleet of vehicles providing one-way car sharing service and a team of drivers to rebalance such vehicles. The drivers then rebalance themselves by driving select customers similar to a taxi service. We model the MoD system as two coupled closed Jackson networks with passenger loss. We show that the system can be approximately balanced by solving two decoupled linear programs and exactly balanced through nonlinear optimization. The rebalancing techniques are applied to a system sizing example using taxi data in three neighborhoods of Manhattan, which suggests that the optimal vehicle-to-driver ratio in a MoD system is between 3 and 5. Lastly, we formulate a real-time closed-loop rebalancing policy for drivers and demonstrate its stability (in terms of customer wait times) for typical system loads.

40DTIC ADA467314: The Analysis Of Network Centric Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) Using Queueing Theory
By Defense Technical Information Center
In 2001 the Maritime Systems Group of The Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP) set-up an Action Group (AG-1) to examine the exponential increases in warfighting capability claimed for Network-Centric Maritime Warfare (NCMW). Analysis of NCMW is a two-stage process of finding analysis processes for estimating the NCMW effects on the scenario parameters and then applying appropriate warfare models to relate NCMW-sensitive scenario parameters to force effectiveness. This paper will report on the results of a modeling workshop held by AG-1 in November 2002. The workshop's focus was to investigate the usefulness of applying a queueing model to Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) within the context of the NCMW concept of tactical collaborative planning. Both analytical and simulation-based queueing models were examined, and the theoretical model was applied parametrically to two MIO scenarios. Using the steady-state probability of target vessel interdiction (i.e., service) as the primary measure of effectiveness, the workshop was able to demonstrate the usefulness of queueing to relate NCMW application measures to force effectiveness. In addition, the queueing models provided valuable insight into the aspects of the MIO task where NCMW concepts might be applied. Thus, queueing is directly applicable to the second stage of analysis for operations that can be viewed as a demand for service, and provides direction in the process of refining NCMW concepts into testable applications. The parametric results from the workshop provide general bounds on expected improvements in effectiveness; however, specific results will depend upon the particular NCMW applications and how they are used.

41Performance Analysis Of Queueing Networks Via Robust Optimization
By Dimitris Bertsimas, David Gamarnik and Alexander Rikun
Performance analysis of queueing networks is one of the most challenging areas of queueing theory. Barring very specialized models such as product-form type queueing networks, there exist very few results which provide provable non-asymptotic upper and lower bounds on key performance measures. In this paper we propose a new performance analysis method, which is based on the robust optimization. The basic premise of our approach is as follows: rather than assuming that the stochastic primitives of a queueing model satisfy certain probability laws, such as, for example, i.i.d. interarrival and service times distributions, we assume that the underlying primitives are deterministic and satisfy the implications of such probability laws. These implications take the form of simple linear constraints, namely, those motivated by the Law of the Iterated Logarithm (LIL). Using this approach we are able to obtain performance bounds on some key performance measures. Furthermore, these performance bounds imply similar bounds in the underlying stochastic queueing models. We demonstrate our approach on two types of queueing networks: a) Tandem Single Class queue- ing network and b) Multiclass Single Server queueing network. In both cases, using the proposed robust optimization approach, we are able to obtain explicit upper bounds on some steady-state performance measures. For example, for the case of TSC system we obtain a bound of the form $\frac{C}{1-\rho} \ln \ln(1/(1-\rho))$ on the expected steady-state sojourn time, where C is an explicit constant and $\rho$ is the bottleneck traffic intensity. This qualitatively agrees with the correct heavy traffic scaling of this performance measure up to the $ln ln(1/(1-\rho))$ correction factor.

42Analysis Of Multiserver Retrial Queueing System: A Martingale Approach And An Algorithm Of Solution
By Vyacheslav M. Abramov
The paper studies a multiserver retrial queueing system with $m$ servers. Arrival process is a point process with strictly stationary and ergodic increments. A customer arriving to the system occupies one of the free servers. If upon arrival all servers are busy, then the customer goes to the secondary queue, orbit, and after some random time retries more and more to occupy a server. A service time of each customer is exponentially distributed random variable with parameter $\mu_1$. A time between retrials is exponentially distributed with parameter $\mu_2$ for each customer. Using a martingale approach the paper provides an analysis of this system. The paper establishes the stability condition and studies a behavior of the limiting queue-length distributions as $\mu_2$ increases to infinity. As $\mu_2\to\infty$, the paper also proves the convergence of appropriate queue-length distributions to those of the associated `usual' multiserver queueing system without retrials. 45DTIC ADA1029924: Queueing Network Analysis In Software Physics,
By Defense Technical Information Center
46Dynamical Analysis Of The Exclusive Queueing Process
By Chikashi Arita and Andreas Schadschneider
In a recent study [C Arita and D Yanagisawa: J. Stat. Phys. 141, 829 (2010)] the stationary state of a parallel-update TASEP with varying system length, which can be regarded as a queueing process with excluded-volume effect (exclusive queueing process, EQP), was obtained. We analyze the dynamical properties of the number of particles $ < N_t>$ and the position of the last particle (the system length) $ < L_t>$, using an analytical method (generating function technique) as well as a phenomenological description based on domain wall dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. The system exhibits two phases corresponding to linear convergence or divergence of $ < N_t>$ and $ < L_t>$. These phases can both further be subdivided into high-density and maximal-current subphases. The predictions of the domain wall theory are found to be in very good agreement quantitively with results from Monte Carlo simulations in the convergent phase. On the other hand, in the divergent phase, only the prediction for $ < N_t>$ agrees with simulations.

48Statistical Analysis Of Single-server Loss Queueing Systems
By Vyacheslav M. Abramov
In this article statistical bounds for certain output characteristics of the $M/GI/1/n$ and $GI/M/1/n$ loss queueing systems are derived on the basis of large samples of an input characteristic of these systems, such as service time in the $M/GI/1/n$ queueing system or interarrival time in the $GI/M/1/n$ queueing system. The analysis of this article is based on application of Kolmogorov's statistics for empirical probability distribution functions.

50Random Linear Network Coding For Time-Division Duplexing: Queueing Analysis
By Daniel E. Lucani, Muriel Médard and Milica Stojanovic
We study the performance of random linear network coding for time division duplexing channels with Poisson arrivals. We model the system as a bulk-service queue with variable bulk size. A full characterization for random linear network coding is provided for time division duplexing channels [1] by means of the moment generating function. We present numerical results for the mean number of packets in the queue and consider the effect of the range of allowable bulk sizes. We show that there exists an optimal choice of this range that minimizes the mean number of data packets in the queue.
