Recently Drummond and Hillery [Phys. Rev.A 59, 691(1999)] presented a quantum theory of dispersion based on the analysis of a coupled system of the electromagnetic field and atoms in the multipolar QED formulation. The theory has led to the explicit mode-expansions for various field-operators in a homogeneous medium characterized by an arbitrary number of resonant transitions with different frequencies. In this Comment, we drawn attention to a similar multipolar study by Juzeliunas [Phys. Rev.A 53, 3543 (1996); 55, 929 (1997)] on the field quantization in a discrete molecular (or atomic) medium. A comparative analysis of the two approaches is carried out, highlighting both common and distinctive features.

3Sectors Of Mutually Local Fields In Integrable Models Of Quantum Field Theory

It is known that 2D field theories admit several sectors of mutually local fields so as two fields from different sectors are mutually nonlocal. We show that any one-partical integrable model with ${\bf Z}_2$ symmetry contains three sectors: bosonic, fermionic and `disorder' one. We generalize the form factor axioms to fermionic and `disorder' sectors. For the particular case of the sinh-Gordon model we obtain several form factors in these sectors.

6Mean Field Theory For Collective Motion Of Quantum Meson Fields

Mean field theory for the time evolution of quantum meson fields is studied in terms of the functional Schroedinger picture with a time-dependent Gaussian variational wave functional. We first show that the equations of motion for the variational wavefunctional can be rewritten in a compact form similar to the Hartree-Bogoliubov equations in quantum many-body theory and this result is used to recover the covariance of the theory. We then apply this method to the O(N) model and present analytic solutions of the mean field evolution equations for an N-component scalar field. These solutions correspond to quantum rotations in isospin space and represent generalizations of the classical solutions obtained earlier by Anselm and Ryskin. As compared to classical solutions new effects arise because of the coupling between the average value of the field and its quantum fluctuations. We show how to generalize these solutions to the case of mean field dynamics at finite temperature. The relevance of these solutions for the observation of a coherent collective state or a disoriented chiral condensate in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions is discussed.

7Quantum Theory For Spatial Motion Of Polaritons In Inhomogeneous Fields

Polaritons are the collective excitations of many atoms dressed by resonant photons, which can be used to explain the slow light propagation with the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency. As quasi-particles, these collective excitations possess the typical feature of the matter particles, which can be reflected and deflected by the inhomogeneous medium in its spatial motion with some velocity. In this paper we develop a quantum theory to systematically describe the spatial motion of polaritons in inhomogeneous magnetic and optical fields. This theoretical approach treats these quasi-particles through an effective Schr\"{o}dinger equation with anisotropic depression that the longitudinal motion is like a ultra-relativistic motion of a "slow light velocity" while the transverse motion is of non-relativity with certain effective mass. We find that, after passing through the EIT medium, the light ray bends due to the spatial-dependent profile of external field. This phenomenon explicitly demonstrates the exotic corpuscular property of polaritons with anisotropic nature.

New quantum modes of the free scalar field are derived in a special time-evolution picture that may be introduced in moving charts of de Sitter backgrounds. The wave functions of these new modes are solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation and energy eigenfunctions, defining the energy basis. This completes the scalar quantum mechanics where the momentum basis is well-known from long time. In this enlarged framework the quantization of the scalar field can be done in canonical way obtaining the principal conserved one-particle operators and the Green functions.

11Heisenberg Evolution In A Quantum Theory Of Noncommutative Fields

A quantum theory of noncommutative fields was recently proposed by Carmona, Cortez, Gamboa and Mendez (hep-th/0301248). The implications of the noncommutativity of the fields, intended as the requirements $[\phi,\phi^{+}]=\theta\delta^{3}(x-x^{\prime}), [\pi,\pi^{+}]=B\delta^{3}(x-x^{\prime}) $, were analyzed on the basis of an analogy with previous results on the so-called ``noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction". Some departures from Lorentz symmetry turned out to play a key role in the emerging framework. We first consider the same hamiltonian proposed in hep-th/0301248, and we show that the theory can be analyzed straightforwardly within the framework of Heisenberg evolution equation without any need of making reference to the ``noncommutative harmonic oscillator construction". We then consider a rather general class of alternative hamiltonians, and we observe that violations of Lorentz invariance are inevitably encountered. These violations must therefore be viewed as intrinsically associated with the proposed type of noncommutativity of fields, rather than as a consequence of a specific choice of Hamiltonian.

A new generalized formulation of the spectral condition is proposed for quantum fields with highly singular infrared behavior whose vacuum correlation functions are well defined only under smearing with analytic test functions in momentum space. The Euclidean formulation of QFT developed by Osterwalder and Schrader is extended to theories with infrared singular indefinite metric. The corresponding generalization of the reconstruction theorem is obtained. The fulfilment of the generalized spectral condition is verified for quantum fields representable by infinite series in the Wick powers of indefinite metric free fields.

Starting from a given S-matrix of an integrable quantum field theory in $1+1$ dimensions, and knowledge of its on-shell quantum group symmetries, we describe how to extend the symmetry to the space of fields. This is accomplished by introducing an adjoint action of the symmetry generators on fields, and specifying the form factors of descendents. The braiding relations of quantum field multiplets is shown to be given by the universal $\CR$-matrix. We develop in some detail the case of infinite dimensional Yangian symmetry. We show that the quantum double of the Yangian is a Hopf algebra deformation of a level zero Kac-Moody algebra that preserves its finite dimensional Lie subalgebra. The fields form infinite dimensional Verma-module representations; in particular the energy-momentum tensor and isotopic current are in the same multiplet.

Quantum fields on a stationary space-time in a rotating Killing reference frame are considered. Finding solutions of wave equations in this frame is reduced to a fiducial problem on a static background. The rotation results in a gauge connection in a way similar to appearance of gauge fields in Kaluza-Klein models. Such a Kaluza-Klein method in theory of rotating quantum fields enables one to simplify computations and get a number of new results similar to those established for static backgrounds. In particular, we find with its help functional form of free energy at high temperatures. Applications of these results to quantum fields near rotating black holes are briefly discussed.

A recently developed technique for the system--and--bath quantization of open optical cavities is applied to three resonator geometries: A one dimensional dielectric, a Fabry--Perot resonator, and a dielectric disk. The system--and--bath Hamiltonian for these geometries is derived starting from Maxwell's equations and employed to compute the electromagnetic fields, the resonances, and the cavity gain factors. Exact agreement is found with standard quantization methods based on a modes--of--the--universe description. Our analysis provides a microscopic justification for the system--and--bath quantization even in the regime of spectrally overlapping modes.

Two different approaches to compute the Green functions of the physical operators are proposed. First the complex(rational) powers are defined via an integral representation,that allows to compute the conformal blocks, Green functions and structure constants of OPA. Next an approach based on a system of recursion equations for the Green functions is developed. A number of solutions of the system is found. A lot of possible applications is briefly discussed.

21Relativistic Quantum Field Theory Of High-Spin Matter Fields: A Pragmatic Approach For Hadronic Physics

A consistent phenomenology of the interaction of particles of arbitrary spin requires covariant spinors, field operators, propagators and model interactions. Guided by an approach originally proposed by Weinberg, we construct from group theoretical arguments the (j,0)+(0,j) covariant spinors and the field operators for a massive particles. Specific examples are worked out in the familiar language of the Bjorken and Drell text for the case of the (1,0)+(0,1), (3/2,0)+(0,3/2) and (2,0)+(0,2) matter fields. The m\to 0 limit of the covariant spinors is shown to have the expected structure. The algebra of the \gamma^{\mu\nu} matrices associated with the (1,0)+(0,1) matter fields is presented, and the conserved current derived. The procedure readily extends to higher spins. The causality problem associated with the j\ge 1 wave equations is discussed in detail and a systematic procedure to construct causal propagators is provided. As an example a spin two wave equation satisfied by the (2,0)+(0,2), covariant spinors is found to support not only ten correct and causal solutions, but also thirty physically unacceptable acausal solutions. However, we demonstrate how to construct the Feynman propagator for the higher spin particles directly from the spinors and thus avoid the shortcomings of the wave equation in building a phenomenology. The same exercise is repeated for the (1,0)+(0,1) and (3/2,0)+(0,3/2) matter fields, and the same conclusions obtained. Massless limit is discussed in detail. A quantum theory representations of real (R) and complex (C) numbers is given that is based on states of single, finite strings of qukits for any base k > 1. Both unary representations and the possibility that qukits with k a prime number are elementary and the rest composite are discussed. Cauchy sequences of qukit string states are defined from the arithmetic properties. The representations of R and C, as equivalence classes of these sequences, differ from classical kit string state representations in two ways: the freedom of choice of basis states, and the fact that each quantum theory representation is part of a mathematical structure that is itself based on the real and complex numbers. These aspects enable the description of 3 dimensional frame fields labeled by different k values, different basis or gauge choices, and different iteration stages. The reference frames in the field are based on each R and C representation where each frame contains representations of all physical theories as mathematical structures based on the R and C representation. Approaches to integrating this with physics are described. It is observed that R and C values of physical quantities, matrix elements, etc. which are viewed in a frame as elementary and featureless, are seen in a parent frame as equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences of qukit string states.

In this paper we work in perturbative quantum gravity and we introduce a new effective model for gravity. Expanding the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian in graviton field powers we have an infinite number of terms. In this paper we study the possibility of an interpretation of more than three graviton interacting vertices as effective vertices of a most fundamental theory that contain tensor fields. Here we introduce a Lagrangian model named I.T.B (Intermediate Tensor Boson) where four gravitational "pseudo-currents" that contain two gravitons couple to three massive tensorial fields of rank 1, 3, 5 respectively. We show that the exchange of those massive particles reproduces, at low energy, the interacting vertices for four or more gravitons. In a particular version, the model contains a dimensionless coupling constant "g" and the mass M of the intermediate bosons as free parameters. The universal gravitational constant G is shown to be proportional to the inverse of mass squared of mediator fields. A foresighting choice of the dimensionless coupling constant could lower the energy scale where quantum gravity aspects show up.

The scientific methodology based on two descriptive levels, ontic (reality as it is ) and epistemic (observational), is briefly presented. Following Schr\"odinger, we point to the possible gap between these two descriptions. Our main aim is to show that, although ontic entities may be inaccessible for observations, they can be useful for clarification of the physical nature of operational epistemic entities. We illustrate this thesis by the concrete example: starting with the concrete ontic model preceding quantum mechanics (the latter is treated as an epistemic model), namely, prequantum classical statistical field theory (PCSFT), we propose the natural physical interpretation for the basic quantum mechanical entity - the quantum state ("wave function"). The correspondence PCSFT to QM is not straightforward, it couples the covariance operators of classical (prequantum) random fields with the quantum density operators. We use this correspondence to clarify the physical meaning of the pure quantum state and the superposition principle - by using the formalism of classical field correlations.

For linear scalar field theories, I characterize those classical Hamiltonian vector fields which have self-adjoint operators as their quantum counterparts. As an application, it is shown that for a scalar field in curved space-time (in a Hadamard representation), a self-adjoint Hamiltonian for evolution along the unit timelike normal to a Cauchy surface exists only if the second fundamental form of the surface vanishes identically.

We construct momentum space expansions for the wave functions that solve the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations for tachyons, recognizing that the mass shell for such fields is very different from what we are used to for ordinary (slower than light) particles. We find that we can postulate commutation or anticommutation rules for the operators that lead to physically sensible results: causality, for tachyon fields, means that there is no connection between spacetime points separated by a timelike interval. Calculating the conserved charge and 4-momentum for these fields allows us to interpret the number operators for particles and antiparticles in a consistent manner; and we see that helicity plays a critical role for the spinor field. Some questions about Lorentz invariance are addressed and some remain unresolved; and we show how to handle the group representation for tachyon spinors.

We present a new group field theory describing 3d Riemannian quantum gravity coupled to matter fields for any choice of spin and mass. The perturbative expansion of the partition function produces fat graphs colored with SU(2) algebraic data, from which one can reconstruct at once a 3-dimensional simplicial complex representing spacetime and its geometry, like in the Ponzano-Regge formulation of pure 3d quantum gravity, and the Feynman graphs for the matter fields. The model then assigns quantum amplitudes to these fat graphs given by spin foam models for gravity coupled to interacting massive spinning point particles, whose properties we discuss.

38Towards A Quantum Field Theory Of Primitive String Fields

We denote generating functions of massless even higher spin fields "primitive string fields" (PSF's). In an introduction we present the necessary definitions and derive propagators and currents of these PDF's on flat space. Their off-shell cubic interaction can be derived after all off-shell cubic interactions of triplets of higher spin fields have become known [2],[3]. Then we discuss four-point functions of any quartet of PSF's. In subsequent sections we exploit the fact that higher spin field theories in $AdS_{d+1}$ are determined by AdS/CFT correspondence from universality classes of critical systems in $d$ dimensional flat spaces. The O(N) invariant sectors of the O(N) vector models for $1\leq N \leq \infty$ play for us the role of "standard models", for varying $N$, they contain e.g. the Ising model for N=1 and the spherical model for $N=\infty$. A formula for the masses squared that break gauge symmetry for these O(N) classes is presented for d = 3. For the PSF on $AdS$ space it is shown that it can be derived by lifting the PSF on flat space by a simple kernel which contains the sum over all spins. Finally we use an algorithm to derive all symmetric tensor higher spin fields. They arise from monomials of scalar fields by derivation and selection of conformal (quasiprimary) fields. Typically one monomial produces a multiplet of spin $s$ conformal higher spin fields for all $s \geq 4$, they are distinguished by their anomalous dimensions (in $CFT_3$) or by their mass (in $AdS_4$). We sum over these multiplets and the spins to obtain "string type fields", one for each such monomial.

A hidden gauge theory structure of quantum mechanics which is invisible in its conventional formulation is uncovered. Quantum mechanics is shown to be equivalent to a certain Yang-Mills theory with an infinite-dimensional gauge group and a nondynamical connection. It is defined over an arbitrary symplectic manifold which constitutes the phase-space of the system under consideration. The ''matter fields'' are local generalizations of states and observables; they assume values in a family of local Hilbert spaces (and their tensor products) which are attached to the points of phase-space. Under local frame rotations they transform in the spinor representation of the metaplectic group Mp(2N), the double covering of Sp(2N). The rules of canonical quantization are replaced by two independent postulates with a simple group theoretical and differential geometrical interpretation. A novel background-quantum split symmetry plays a central role.

Interacting electrons in a semiconductor quantum dot at strong magnetic fields exhibit a rich set of states, including correlated quantum fluids and crystallites of various symmetries. We develop in this paper a perturbative scheme based on the correlated basis functions of the composite-fermion theory, that allows a systematic improvement of the wave functions and the energies for low-lying eigenstates. For a test of the method, we study systems for which exact results are known, and find that practically exact answers are obtained for the ground state wave function, ground state energy, excitation gap, and the pair correlation function. We show how the perturbative scheme helps resolve the subtle physics of competing orders in certain anomalous cases.

Recent advances on quantum foundations achieved the derivation of free quantum field theory from general principles, without referring to mechanical notions and relativistic invariance. From the aforementioned principles a quantum cellular automata (QCA) theory follows, whose relativistic limit of small wave-vector provides the free dynamics of quantum field theory. The QCA theory can be regarded as an extended quantum field theory that describes in a unified way all scales ranging from an hypothetical discrete Planck scale up to the usual Fermi scale. The present paper reviews the elementary automaton theory for the Weyl field, and the composite automata for Dirac and Maxwell fields. We then give a simple analysis of the dynamics in the momentum space in terms of a dispersive differential equation for narrowband wave-packets, and some account on the position space description in terms of a discrete path-integral approach. We then review the phenomenology of the free-field automaton and consider possible visible effects arising from the discreteness of the framework. We conclude introducing the consequences of the automaton distorted dispersion relation, leading to a deformed Lorentz covariance and to possible effects on the thermodynamics of ideal gases.

In standard quantum field theory, the one-particle states are classified by unitary representations of the Poincar\'e group, whereas the causal fields' classification employs the finite dimensional (non-unitary) representations of the (homogeneous) Lorentz group. A natural question arises - why the fields are not allowed to transform nontrivially under translations? We investigate this issue by considering the fields that transform under the full representation of the Poincar\'e group. It follows that such fields can be consistently constructed, although the Lagrangians that describe them necessarily exhibit explicit dependence on the space-time coordinates. The two examples of the Poincar\'e-spinor and the Poincar\'e-vector fields are considered in details. The inclusion of Yang--Mills type interactions is considered on the simplest example of the U(1) gauge theory. The generalization to the non-abelian case is straightforward so long as the action of the gauge group on fields is independent of the action of the Poincar\'e group. This is the case for all the known interactions but gravity.

49Quantum Theory Of Chemical Reactions In The Presence Of Electromagnetic Fields

We present a theory for rigorous quantum scattering calculations of probabilities for chemical reactions of atoms with diatomic molecules in the presence of an external electric field. The approach is based on the fully uncoupled basis set representation of the total wave function in the space-fixed coordinate frame, the Fock-Delves hyperspherical coordinates and adiabatic partitioning of the total Hamiltonian of the reactive system. The adiabatic channel wave functions are expanded in basis sets of hyperangular functions corresponding to different reaction arrangements and the interactions with external fields are included in each chemical arrangement separately. We apply the theory to examine the effects of electric fields on the chemical reactions of LiF molecules with H atoms and HF molecules with Li atoms at low temperatures and show that electric fields may enhance the probability of chemical reactions and modify reactive scattering resonances by coupling the rotational states of the reactants. Our preliminary results suggest that chemical reactions of polar molecules at temperatures below 1 K can be selectively manipulated with dc electric fields and microwave laser radiation.

For charged semiconductor complexes in magnetic fields B, we discuss an exact classification of states, which is based on magnetic translations. In this scheme, in addition to the total orbital angular momentum projection $M_z$ and electron and hole spins $S_e$, $S_h$, a new exact quantum number appears. This oscillator quantum number, k, is related physically to the center of the cyclotron motion of the complex as a whole. In the dipole approximation k is strictly conserved in magneto-optical transitions. We discuss implications of this new exact selection rule for internal intraband magneto-optical transitions of charged excitons $X^-$ in quantum wells in B.
