1Conjugate Variables In Quantum Field Theory And A Refinement Of Paulis Theorem
By Steffen Pottel and Klaus Sibold
For the case of spin zero we construct conjugate pairs of operators on Fock space. On states multiplied by polarization vectors coordinate operators Q conjugate to the momentum operator P exist. The massive case is derived from a geometrical quantity, the massless case is realized by taking the limit mass going to zero on the one hand, on the other from conformal transformations. Crucial is the norm problem of the states on which the Q's act: they determine eventually how many independent conjugate pairs exist. It is intriguing that light wedge variables and hence the wedge-local case seems to be preferred.

2Extension Of PT-Symmetric Quantum Mechanics To Quantum Field Theory With Cubic Interaction
By Carl M. Bender, Dorje C. Brody and Hugh F. Jones
It has recently been shown that a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H possessing an unbroken PT symmetry (i) has a real spectrum that is bounded below, and (ii) defines a unitary theory of quantum mechanics with positive norm. The proof of unitarity requires a linear operator C, which was originally defined as a sum over the eigenfunctions of H. However, using this definition to calculate C is cumbersome in quantum mechanics and impossible in quantum field theory. An alternative method is devised here for calculating C directly in terms of the operator dynamical variables of the quantum theory. This new method is general and applies to a variety of quantum mechanical systems having several degrees of freedom. More importantly, this method is used to calculate the C operator in quantum field theory. The C operator is a new time-independent observable in PT-symmetric quantum field theory.

4Entropy And Correlators In Quantum Field Theory
By Jurjen F. Koksma, Tomislav Prokopec and Michael G. Schmidt
It is well known that loss of information about a system, for some observer, leads to an increase in entropy as perceived by this observer. We use this to propose an alternative approach to decoherence in quantum field theory in which the machinery of renormalisation can systematically be implemented: neglecting observationally inaccessible correlators will give rise to an increase in entropy of the system. As an example we calculate the entropy of a general Gaussian state and, assuming the observer's ability to probe this information experimentally, we also calculate the correction to the Gaussian entropy for two specific non-Gaussian states.

5Entanglement Entropy For Non-coplanar Regions In Quantum Field Theory
By David D. Blanco and Horacio Casini
We study the entanglement entropy in a relativistic quantum field theory for regions which are not included in a single spatial hyperplane. This geometric configuration cannot be treated with the Euclidean time method and the replica trick. Instead, we use a real time method to calculate the entropy for a massive free Dirac field in two dimensions in some approximations. We find some specifically relativistic features of the entropy. First, there is a large enhancement of entanglement due to boosts. As a result, the mutual information between relatively boosted regions does not vanish in the limit of zero volume and large relative boost. We also find extensivity of the information in a deeply Lorentzian regime with large violations of the triangle inequalities for the distances. This last effect is relevant to an interpretation of the amount of entropy enclosed in the Hawking radiation emitted by a black hole.

6Quantum Field Theory On Star Graphs
By B. Bellazzini, M. Burrello, M. Mintchev and P. Sorba
We discuss some basic aspects of quantum fields on star graphs, focusing on boundary conditions, symmetries and scale invariance in particular. We investigate the four-fermion bulk interaction in detail. Using bosonization and vertex operators, we solve the model exactly for scale invariant boundary conditions, formulated in terms of the fermion current and without dissipation. The critical points are classified and determined explicitly. These results are applied for deriving the charge and spin transport, which have interesting physical features.

7Divergences In Quantum Field Theory On The Noncommutative Two-dimensional Minkowski Space With Grosse-Wulkenhaar Potential
By Jochen Zahn
Quantum field theory on the noncommutative two-dimensional Minkowski space with Grosse-Wulkenhaar potential is discussed in two ways: In terms of a continuous set of generalised eigenfunctions of the wave operator, and directly in position space. In both settings, we find a new type of divergence in planar graphs. It is present at and above the self-dual point. This new kind of divergence might make the construction of a Minkowski space version of the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model impossible.

8Local Thermal Equilibrium In Quantum Field Theory On Flat And Curved Spacetimes
By Christoph Solveen
The existence of local thermal equilibrium (LTE) states for quantum field theory in the sense of Buchholz, Ojima and Roos is discussed in a model-independent setting. It is shown that for spaces of finitely many independent thermal observables there always exist states which are in LTE in any compact region of Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, LTE states in curved spacetime are discussed and it is observed that the original definition of LTE on curved backgrounds given by Buchholz and Schlemmer needs to be modified. Under an assumption related to certain unboundedness properties of the pointlike thermal observables, existence of states which are in LTE at a given point in curved spacetime is established. The assumption is discussed for the sets of thermal observables for the free scalar field considered by Schlemmer and Verch.

9Covariant Solution Of The Three-quark Problem In Quantum Field Theory: The Nucleon
By G. Eichmann, R. Alkofer, A. Krassnigg and D. Nicmorus
We provide details on a recent solution of the nucleon's covariant Faddeev equation in an explicit three-quark approach. The full Poincare-covariant structure of the three-quark amplitude is implemented through an orthogonal basis obtained from a partial-wave decomposition. We employ a rainbow-ladder gluon exchange kernel which allows for a comparison with meson Bethe-Salpeter and baryon quark-diquark studies. We describe the construction of the three-quark amplitude in full detail and compare it to a notation widespread in recent publications. Finally, we discuss first numerical results for the nucleon's amplitude.

10Algebra Versus Analysis In Statistical Mechanics And Quantum Field Theory

I contrast the profound differences in the ways in which algebra and analysis are used in physics. In particular I discuss the fascinating phenomenon that theoretical physicists devote almost all their efforts to algebraic problems even though all problems of experimental interest require some methods of analysis.

11On Scaling Limits In Euclidean Quantum Field Theory
By Svetoslav Zahariev
We present a general scaling limit construction of probability measures obeying the Glimm-Jaffe axioms of Euclidean quantum field theory in arbitrary space-time dimension. In particular, we obtain measures that may be interpreted as corresponding to scalar quantum fields with arbitrary continuous self-interaction. It remains however an open problem whether this general construction contains non-Gaussian measures.

12Unification Of Gravity And Quantum Field Theory From Extended Noncommutative Geometry
By Hefu Yu and Bo-Qiang Ma
We make biframe and quaternion extensions on the noncommutative geometry, and construct the biframe spacetime for the unification of gravity and quantum field theory. The extended geometry distinguishes between the ordinary spacetime based on the frame bundle and an extra non-coordinate spacetime based on the biframe bundle constructed by our extensions. The ordinary spacetime frame is globally flat and plays the role as the spacetime frame in which the fields of the standard model are defined. The non-coordinate frame is locally flat and is the gravity spacetime frame. The field defined in both frames of such "flat" biframe spacetime can be quantized and plays the role as the gravity field which couples with all the fields to connect the gravity effect with the standard model. Thus we provide a geometric paradigm in which gravity and the quantum field theory can be unified.

13Nonrelativistic Fermions In Magnetic Fields: A Quantum Field Theory Approach
By O. Espinosa, J. Gamboa, S. Lepe and F. Mendez
The statistical mechanics of nonrelativistic fermions in a constant magnetic field is considered from the quantum field theory point of view. The fermionic determinant is computed using a general procedure that contains all possible regularizations. The nonrelativistic grand-potential can be expressed in terms polylogarithm functions, whereas the partition function in 2+1 dimensions and vanishing chemical potential can be compactly written in terms of the Dedekind eta function. The strong and weak magnetic fields limits are easily studied in the latter case by using the duality properties of the Dedekind function.

14Interacting Quantum Field Theory In De Sitter Vacua
By Martin B. Einhorn and Finn Larsen
We discuss interacting quantum field theory in de Sitter space and argue that the Mottola-Allen vacuum ambiguity is an artifact of free field theory. The nature of the nonthermality of the MA-vacua is also clarified. We propose analyticity of correlation functions as a fundamental requirement of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. In de Sitter space, this principle determines the vacuum unambiguously and facilitates the systematic development of perturbation theory.

15Bridging Lattice-scale Physics And Continuum Field Theory With Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations
By Ribhu K. Kaul, Roger G. Melko and Anders W. Sandvik
We discuss designer Hamiltonians---lattice models tailored to be free from sign problems ("de-signed") when simulated with quantum Monte Carlo methods but which still host complex many-body states and quantum phase transitions of interest in condensed matter physics. We focus on quantum spin systems in which competing interactions lead to non-magnetic ground states. These states and the associated quantum phase transitions can be studied in great detail, enabling direct access to universal properties and connections with low-energy effective quantum field theories. As specific examples, we discuss the transition from a Neel antiferromagnet to either a uniform quantum paramagnet or a spontaneously symmetry-broken valence-bond solid in SU(2) and SU(N) invariant spin models. We also discuss anisotropic (XXZ) systems harboring topological Z2 spin liquids and the XY* transition. We briefly review recent progress on quantum Monte Carlo algorithms, including ground state projection in the valence-bond basis and direct computation of the Renyi variants of the entanglement entropy.

16Quantum Dynamical Field Theory For Non-equilibrium Phase Transitions In Driven Open Systems
By Jamir Marino and Sebastian Diehl
We develop a quantum dynamical field theory for studying phase transitions in driven open systems coupled to Markovian noise, where non-linear noise effects and fluctuations beyond semiclassical approximations influence the critical behaviour. We systematically compare the diagrammatics, the properties of the renormalization group flow and the structure of the fixed points, of the novel quantum dynamical field theory and of its semi-classical counterpart, which is employed to characterise dynamical criticality in three dimensional driven-dissipative condensates. As an application, we perform the Keldysh Functional Renormalization of a one dimensional driven open Bose gas, where a tailored diffusion Markov noise realises an analog of quantum criticality for driven-dissipative condensation. We find that the associated non-equilibrium quantum phase transition does not map into the critical behaviour of its three dimensional classical driven counterpart.

18Prime Numbers, Quantum Field Theory And The Goldbach Conjecture
By Miguel-Angel Sanchis-Lozano, J. Fernando Barbero G. and Jose Navarro-Salas
Motivated by the Goldbach conjecture in Number Theory and the abelian bosonization mechanism on a cylindrical two-dimensional spacetime we study the reconstruction of a real scalar field as a product of two real fermion (so-called \textit{prime}) fields whose Fourier expansion exclusively contains prime modes. We undertake the canonical quantization of such prime fields and construct the corresponding Fock space by introducing creation operators $b_{p}^{\dag}$ --labeled by prime numbers $p$-- acting on the vacuum. The analysis of our model, based on the standard rules of quantum field theory and the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis, allow us to prove that the theory is not renormalizable. We also comment on the potential consequences of this result concerning the validity or breakdown of the Goldbach conjecture for large integer numbers.

Haag's theorem was extended to noncommutative quantum field theory in a general case when time does not commute with spatial variables. It was proven that if S-matrix is equal to unity in one of two theories related by unitary transformation, then the corresponding one in another theory is equal to unity as well. In fact this result is valid in any SO(1,1) invariant quantum field theory, of which an important example is noncommutative quantum field theory.

21High Energy Improved Scalar Quantum Field Theory From Noncommutative Geometry Without UV/IR-mixing
By Alexander Schenkel and Christoph F. Uhlemann
We consider an interacting scalar quantum field theory on noncommutative Euclidean space. We implement a family of noncommutative deformations, which -- in contrast to the well known Moyal-Weyl deformation -- lead to a theory with modified kinetic term, while all local potentials are unaffected by the deformation. We show that our models, in particular, include propagators with anisotropic scaling z=2 in the ultraviolet (UV). For a \Phi^4-theory on our noncommutative space we obtain an improved UV behaviour at the one-loop level and the absence of UV/IR-mixing and of the Landau pole.

22Quantum Field Theory For Discrepancies II: 1/N Corrections Using Fermions
By A. van Hameren, R. Kleiss and C. G. Papadopoulos
We calculate the 1/N corrections to the probability distributions of quadratic discrepancies for sets of N random points. This is achieved by the introduction of fermionic variables. We give the diagrammatic expansion up to and including the second order in 1/N. For some discrepancies, we give the explicit expansion to first order.

24Group Field Theory For Quantum Gravity Minimally Coupled To A Scalar Field
By Yang Li, Daniele Oriti and Mingyi Zhang
We construct a group field theory model for quantum gravity minimally coupled to relativistic scalar fields, defining as well a corresponding discrete gravity path integral (and, implicitly, a coupled spin foam model) in its Feynman expansion. We also analyze a number of variations of the same model, the corresponding discrete gravity path integrals, its generalization to the coupling of multiple scalar fields and discuss its possible applications to the extraction of effective cosmological dynamics from the full quantum gravity formalism, in the context of group field theory condensate cosmology.

25Matrix Representation Of Renormalization In Perturbative Quantum Field Theory
By K. Ebrahimi-Fard and L. Guo
We formulate the Hopf algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory using triangular matrix representation. We give a Rota-Baxter anti-homomorphism from general regularized functionals on the Feynman graph Hopf algebra to triangular matrices with entries in a Rota-Baxter algebra. For characters mapping to the group of unipotent triangular matrices we derive the algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for matrices using Spitzer's identity. This simple matrix factorization is applied to characterize and calculate perturbative renormalization.

27Multi-scale Quantum Simulation Of Quantum Field Theory Using Wavelets
By Gavin K. Brennen, Peter Rohde, Barry C. Sanders and Sukhwinder Singh
A successful approach to understand field theories is to resolve the physics into different length or energy scales using the renormalization group framework. We propose a quantum simulation of quantum field theory which encodes field degrees of freedom in a wavelet basis---a multi-scale description of the theory. Since wavelets are compact wavefunctions, this encoding allows for quantum simulations to create particle excitations with compact support and provides a natural way to associate observables in the theory to finite resolution detectors. We show that the wavelet basis is well suited to compute subsystem entanglement entropy by dividing the field into contributions from short-range wavelet degrees of freedom and long-range scale degrees of freedom, of which the latter act as renormalized modes which capture the essential physics at a renormalization fixed point.

28Quantum Field Theory Of Gravity With Spin And Scaling Gauge Invariance And Spacetime Dynamics With Quantum Inflation
By Yue-Liang Wu
Treating the gravitational force on the same footing as the electroweak and strong forces, we present a quantum field theory of gravity based on spin and scaling gauge symmetries. A biframe spacetime is initiated to describe such a quantum gravity theory. The gravifield sided on both locally flat noncoordinate spacetime and globally flat Minkowski spacetime is an essential ingredient for gauging global spin and scaling symmetries. The locally flat gravifield spacetime spanned by the gravifield is associated with a noncommutative geometry characterized by a gauge-type field strength of the gravifield. A coordinate-independent and gauge-invariant action for the quantum gravity is built in the gravifield basis. In the coordinate basis, we derive equations of motion for all quantum fields including the gravitational effect and obtain basic conservation laws for all symmetries. The equation of motion for gravifield tensor is deduced in connection directly with the total energy-momentum tensor. When the spin and scaling gauge symmetries are broken down to a background structure that possesses the global Lorentz and scaling symmetries, we obtain exact solutions by solving equations of motion for the background fields in a unitary basis. The massless graviton and massive spinon result as physical quantum degrees of freedom. The resulting Lorentz-invariant and conformally flat background gravifield space-time is characterized by a cosmic vector with a nonzero cosmological mass scale. The conformal size of the Universe becomes singular at the cosmological horizon and turns out to be inflationary. A mechanism for quantum inflation is demonstrated to generate the inflation of the early Universe. Two types of gravity equation result, one is as the extension to Einstein's equation of general relativity, and the other is a new one that characterizes spinon dynamics.

29The Cofounder Of Quantum Field Theory: Pascual Jordan
By Walter Dittrich
A comparative study is undertaken that brings to light the two different methods of how to treat the many-body problem in quantum field theory. The two main researchers who published the first versions of how to quantize a many-body assembly were P. Jordan and P.A.M. Dirac. What they understood by the so-called "second quantization" will be the subject of the paper. We will argue that it is Jordan's field operator approach that until now constitutes the basis of any work in quantum field theory.

30Noncovariant Gauge Fixing In The Quantum Dirac Field Theory Of Atoms And Molecules
By Adam Stokes
Starting from the Weyl gauge formulation of quantum electrodynamics (QED), the formalism of quantum-mechanical gauge fixing is extended using techniques from nonrelativistic QED. This involves expressing the redundant gauge degrees of freedom through an arbitrary functional of the gauge-invariant transverse degrees of freedom. Particular choices of functional can be made to yield the Coulomb gauge and Poincar\'{e} gauge representations. The Hamiltonian we derive therefore serves as a good starting point for the description of atoms and molecules by means of a relativistic Dirac field. We discuss important implications for the ontology of noncovariant canonical QED due to the gauge freedom that remains present in our formulation.

31Effective Field Theory Of Quantum Gravity Coupled To Scalar Electrodynamics
By L. Ibiapina Bevilaqua, A. C. Lehum and A. J. da Silva
In this work we use the framework of effective field theory to couple Einstein's gravity to scalar electrodynamics and determine the renormalization of the model through the study of physical processes below Planck scale, a realm where quantum mechanics and general relativity are perfectly compatible. We consider the effective field theory up to dimension six operators, corresponding to processes involving one graviton exchange. Studying the renormalization group functions we see that the beta function of the electric charge is positive and possesses no contribution coming from gravitational interaction. Our result indicates that gravitational corrections do not alter the running behavior of the gauge coupling constants, even if massive particles are present.

32Quantum Field Theory, Gravity And Cosmology In A Fractal Universe
By Gianluca Calcagni
We propose a model for a power-counting renormalizable field theory living in a fractal spacetime. The action is Lorentz covariant and equipped with a Stieltjes measure. The system flows, even in a classical sense, from an ultraviolet regime where spacetime has Hausdorff dimension 2 to an infrared limit coinciding with a standard $D$-dimensional field theory. We discuss the properties of a scalar field model at classical and quantum level. Classically, the field lives on a fractal which exchanges energy-momentum with the bulk of integer topological dimension D. Although an observer experiences dissipation, the total energy-momentum is conserved. The field spectrum is a continuum of massive modes. The gravitational sector and Einstein equations are discussed in detail, also on cosmological backgrounds. We find ultraviolet cosmological solutions and comment on their implications for the early universe.

33Introduction To A Quantum Theory Over A Galois Field
By Felix M. Lev
We consider a quantum theory based on a Galois field. In this approach infinities cannot exist, the cosmological constant problem does not arise, and one irreducible representation (IR) of the symmetry algebra splits into independent IRs describing a particle an its antiparticle only in the approximation when de Sitter energies are much less than the characteristic of the field. As a consequence, the very notions of particles and antiparticles are only approximate and such additive quantum numbers as the electric, baryon and lepton charges are conserved only in this approximation. There can be no neutral elementary particles and the spin-statistics theorem can be treated simply as a requirement that standard quantum theory should be based on complex numbers.

36Quantum Theory Of Radical-Ion-Pair Recombination: A New Physical Paradigm For Low-Magnetic-Field Effects
By I. K. Kominis
A new paradigm emerging in the description of magnetic-sensitive radical-ion-pair recombination reactions is presented. This paradigm is founded on the realization that the recombination process of radical-ion pairs is a continuous quantum measurement. In the regime of low magnetic fields we describe the appearance of purely quantum phenomena, that fade away as the magnetic field increases. We will analyze the magnetic sensitivity of these reactions under this perspective and bridge the new full quantum theory with the existing classical reaction theory applicable at high magnetic fields. Based on the quantum theory of recombination we will then explain experimental observations incompatible with classical reaction theory, in particular the effect of deuteration on the magnetic sensitivity of radical-ion pair recombination yields.

37Conformal Generally Covariant Quantum Field Theory: The Scalar Field And Its Wick Products
By Nicola Pinamonti
In this paper we generalize the construction of generally covariant quantum theories given in the work of Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch to encompass the conformal covariant case. After introducing the abstract framework, we discuss the massless conformally coupled Klein Gordon field theory, showing that its quantization corresponds to a functor between two certain categories. At the abstract level, the ordinary fields, could be thought as natural transformations in the sense of category theory. We show that, the Wick monomials without derivatives (Wick powers), can be interpreted as fields in this generalized sense, provided a non trivial choice of the renormalization constants is given. A careful analysis shows that the transformation law of Wick powers is characterized by a weight, and it turns out that the sum of fields with different weights breaks the conformal covariance. At this point there is a difference between the previously given picture due to the presence of a bigger group of covariance. It is furthermore shown that the construction does not depend upon the scale mu appearing in the Hadamard parametrix, used to regularize the fields. Finally, we briefly discuss some further examples of more involved fields.

38Quantum Field Theory Approach To The Optical Conductivity Of Strained And Deformed Graphene
By W. de Paula, a. Chaves, O. Oliveira and T. Frederico
The computation of the optical conductivity of strained and deformed graphene is discussed within the framework of quantum field theory in curved spaces. The analytical solutions of the Dirac equation in an arbitrary static background geometry for one dimensional periodic deformations are computed, together with the corresponding Dirac propagator. Analytical expressions are given for the optical conductivity of strained and deformed graphene associated with both intra and interbrand transitions. The special case of small deformations is discussed and the result compared to the prediction of the tight-binding model.

39Slave-boson Keldysh Field Theory For The Kondo Effect In Quantum Dots
By Sergey Smirnov and Milena Grifoni
We present a {\it nonequilibrium nonperturbative} field theory for the Kondo effect in strongly interacting quantum dots at finite temperatures. Unifying the slave-boson representation with the Keldysh field integral an effective Keldysh action is derived and explored in the vicinity of the zero slave-bosonic field configuration. The theory properly reflects the essential features of the Kondo physics and at the same time significantly simplifies a field-theoretic treatment of the phenomenon, avoiding complicated saddle point analysis or 1/N expansions, used so far. Importantly, our theory admits a {\it closed analytical} solution which explains the mechanism of the Kondo effect in terms of an interplay between the real and imaginary parts of the slave-bosonic self-energy. It thus provides a convenient nonperturbative building block, playing the role of a "free propagator", for more advanced theories. We finally demonstrate that already this simplest possible field theory is able to correctly reproduce experimental data on the Kondo peak observed in the differential conductance, correctly predicts the Kondo temperature and, within its applicability range, has the same universal temperature dependence of the conductance as the one obtained in numerical renormalization group calculations.

40Renormalization And Quantum Field Theory
By R. E. Borcherds
The aim of this paper is to describe how to use regularization and renormalization to construct a perturbative quantum field theory from a Lagrangian. We first define renormalizations and Feynman measures, and show that although there need not exist a canonical Feynman measure, there is a canonical orbit of Feynman measures under renormalization. We then construct a perturbative quantum field theory from a Lagrangian and a Feynman measure, and show that it satisfies perturbative analogues of the Wightman axioms, extended to allow time-ordered composite operators over curved spacetimes.

41Quantum Theory Of Particles And Fields As An Extension Of A Probabilistic Variational Approach To Classical Mechanics And Classical Field Theory. I
By Matteo Villani
A theoretical scheme, based on a probabilistic generalization of the Hamilton's principle, is elaborated to obtain an unified description of more general dynamical behaviors determined both from a lagrangian function and by mechanisms not contemplated by this function. Within this scheme, quantum mechanics, classical field theory and a quantum theory for scalar fields are discussed. As a by-product of the probabilistic scheme for classical field theory, the equations of the De Donder-Weyl theory for multi-dimensional variational problems are recovered.

42Gravity Dual For Reggeon Field Theory And Non-linear Quantum Finance
By Yu Nakayama
We study scale invariant but not necessarily conformal invariant deformations of non-relativistic conformal field theories from the dual gravity viewpoint. We present the corresponding metric that solves the Einstein equation coupled with a massive vector field. We find that, within the class of metric we study, when we assume the Galilean invariance, the scale invariant deformation always preserves the non-relativistic conformal invariance. We discuss applications to scaling regime of Reggeon field theory and non-linear quantum finance. These theories possess scale invariance but may or may not break the conformal invariance, depending on the underlying symmetry assumptions.

43Matrix Product States And Variational Methods Applied To Critical Quantum Field Theory
By Ashley Milsted, Jutho Haegeman and Tobias J. Osborne
We study the second-order quantum phase-transition of massive real scalar field theory with a quartic interaction in (1+1) dimensions on an infinite spatial lattice using matrix product states (MPS). We introduce and apply a naive variational conjugate gradient method, based on the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) for imaginary time, to obtain approximate ground states, using a related ansatz for excitations to calculate the particle and soliton masses and to obtain the spectral density. We also estimate the central charge using finite-entanglement scaling. Our value for the critical parameter agrees well with recent Monte Carlo results, improving on an earlier study which used the related DMRG method, verifying that these techniques are well-suited to studying critical field systems. We also obtain critical exponents that agree, as expected, with those of the transverse Ising model. Additionally, we treat the special case of uniform product states (mean field theory) separately, showing that they may be used to investigate non-critical quantum field theories under certain conditions.

44Differential Cohomology And Locally Covariant Quantum Field Theory
By Christian Becker, Alexander Schenkel and Richard J. Szabo
We study differential cohomology on categories of globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds. The Lorentzian metric allows us to define a natural transformation whose kernel generalizes Maxwell's equations and fits into a restriction of the fundamental exact sequences of differential cohomology. We consider smooth Pontryagin duals of differential cohomology groups, which are subgroups of the character groups. We prove that these groups fit into smooth duals of the fundamental exact sequences of differential cohomology and equip them with a natural presymplectic structure derived from a generalized Maxwell Lagrangian. The resulting presymplectic Abelian groups are quantized using the CCR-functor, which yields a covariant functor from our categories of globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds to the category of C*-algebras. We prove that this functor satisfies the causality and time-slice axioms of locally covariant quantum field theory, but that it violates the locality axiom. We show that this violation is precisely due to the fact that our functor has topological subfunctors describing the Pontryagin duals of certain singular cohomology groups. As a byproduct, we develop a Fr\'echet-Lie group structure on differential cohomology groups.

45Explicit Construction Of Hadamard States For Quantum Field Theory In Curved Spacetimes
By Marcos Brum
In this Thesis we will explicitly construct Hadamard states with different features. In the two first cases, the states will be constructed in static and in cosmological spacetimes. In one of the cases, the states will be constructed in such a way as to minimize the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of a free massive scalar field, multiplied by a suitable smooth function of compact support, in a cosmological spacetime. The final form of the state clearly reduces to the vacuum in a static spacetime. Besides, we will show that these are Hadamard states. They do not contradict the above mentioned nonexistence of a unique prescription because they depend on the chosen smooth function. In the other case, we will calculate the positive part of the spectral decomposition of the commutator function in a specific subset of the spacetime and will show that, in static and in cosmological spacetimes, the kernel of this function, once again multiplied by a suitable smooth function of compact support, corresponds to the kernel of Hadamard states. In both cases, the construction of the states does not rely on invariance under the action of a group of symmetries. Such a group may not even exist, in these cases. In the last case we will construct a state in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, which describes a universe with a black hole and a cosmological constant. This state is invariant under the action of the group of symmetries of this spacetime, although it is not defined in its whole Kruskal extension. In this way, we avoid the situation in which the authors of (KayWald91) showed that a Hadamard state cannot exist. We will show that the state we construct is Hadamard and that it is not thermal, differently from the case of states constructed in spacetimes containing only one event horizon (DappiaggiMorettiPinamonti09,GibbonsHawking77).

46Quantum Field Theory On Fock Projective Space
By Peter Leifer
It is shown that some analog of the ``second quantization'' exists in the framework of CP(N) theory. I analyse conditions under that ``geometrical bosons'' may be identified with real physical fields. The compact character of a state manifold should preserve the quantities of dynamical variables from divergences.

47Observers And Locality In Everett Quantum Field Theory
By Mark A. Rubin
A model for measurement in collapse-free nonrelativistic fermionic quantum field theory is presented. In addition to local propagation and effectively-local interactions, the model incorporates explicit representations of localized observers, thus extending an earlier model of entanglement generation in Everett quantum field theory [M. A. Rubin, Found. Phys. 32, 1495-1523 (2002)]. Transformations of the field operators from the Heisenberg picture to the Deutsch-Hayden picture, involving fictitious auxiliary fields, establish the locality of the model. The model is applied to manifestly-local calculations of the results of measurements, using a type of sudden approximation and in the limit of massive systems in narrow-wavepacket states. Detection of the presence of a spin-1/2 system in a given spin state by a freely-moving two-state observer illustrates the features of the model and the nonperturbative computational methodology. With the help of perturbation theory the model is applied to a calculation of the quintessential "nonlocal" quantum phenomenon, spin correlations in the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm experiment.

48Thermal Quantum Field Theory And The Casimir Interaction Between Dielectrics
By B. Geyer, G. L. Klimchitskaya and V. M. Mostepanenko
The Casimir and van der Waals interaction between two dissimilar thick dielectric plates is reconsidered on the basis of thermal quantum field theory in Matsubara formulation. We briefly review two main derivations of the Lifshitz formula in the framework of thermal quantum field theory without use of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. A set of special conditions is formulated under which these derivations remain valid in the presence of dissipation. The low-temperature behavior of the Casimir and van der Waals interactions between dissimilar dielectrics is found analytically from the Lifshitz theory for both an idealized model of dilute dielectrics and for real dielectrics with finite static dielectric permittivities. The free energy, pressure and entropy of the Casimir and van der Waals interactions at low temperatures demonstrate the same universal dependence on the temperature as was previously discovered for ideal metals. The entropy vanishes when temperature goes to zero proving the validity of the Nernst heat theorem. This solves the long-standing problem on the consistency of the Lifshitz theory with thermodynamics in the case of dielectric plates. The obtained asymptotic expressions are compared with numerical computations for both dissimilar and similar real dielectrics and found to be in excellent agreement. The role of the zero-frequency term in Matsubara sum is investigated in the case of dielectric plates. It is shown that the inclusion of conductivity in the model of dielectric response leads to the violation of the Nernst heat theorem. The applications of this result to the topical problems of noncontact atomic friction and the Casimir interaction between real metals are discussed.

49Nonlocal Quantization Principle In Quantum Field Theory And Quantum Gravity
By Martin Kober
In this paper a nonlocal generalization of field quantization is suggested. This quantization principle presupposes the assumption that the commutator between a field operator an the operator of the canonical conjugated variable referring to other space-time points does not vanish as it is postulated in the usual setting of quantum field theory. Based on this presupposition the corresponding expressions for the field operators, the eigenstates and the path integral formula are determined. The nonlocal quantization principle also leads to a generalized propagator. If the dependence of the commutator between operators on different space-time points on the distance of these points is assumed to be described by a Gaussian function, one obtains that the propagator is damped by an exponential. This leads to a disappearance of UV divergences. The transfer of the nonlocal quantization principle to canonical quantum gravity is considered as well. In this case the commutator has to be assumed to depend also on the gravitational field, since the distance between two points depends on the metric field.
