1Arduino BLDC Motor Reaction Wheel Inverted Pendulum - Simple FOC Project (4416233)

By

This is a project of designing and controlling the reaction wheel inverted pendulum based entirely on Arduino [SimpleFOC library and SimpleFOC shield](https://github.com/askuric/Arduino-FOC). The Field Oriented Controlled BLDC motor in combination with the shield and the library makes this reaction wheel inverted pendulum setups one of the simplest possible ones. But also very robust and well performing. :D You can also find a YouTube video with the demonstration of the pendulum performance, assembly and the coding: https://youtu.be/Ih-izQyXJCI For more information about the software and hardware please visit the github repository of the project https://github.com/askuric/Arduino-FOC-reaction-wheel-inverted-pendulum. This is a very fun project in many ways, and it is intended: - Students in search for a good testing platform for their advanced algorithms - Everyone with a bit of free time and a motivation to create something cool :D But for me, the most exciting part of this project was the ability to use the Field Oriented Control algorithm. **The main benefits of using the BLDC motor in this project are:** - High torque to weight ratio - The lighter the better - Lots of torque for low angular velocities - No need to spin the motor to very high RPM to achieve high torques - No gearboxes and backlash - Very smooth operation = very stable pendulum So far, FOC has been restricted to high-end applications due to the complexity and the cost of the hardware mostly, but also due to the lack of user-friendly, well documented software. Therefore I am very happy to show you the projects like this one, which directly benefit the FOC algorithm and BLDC motors and encourage you to use these techniques in your projects as well. One of the very simple ways of starting (demonstrated in this video) is using the [SimpleFOC library and SimpleFOC shield](https://github.com/askuric/Arduino-FOC).

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19970021545: Inverting The Pendulum Using Fuzzy Control (Center Director's Discretionary Fund (Project 93-02)

By

A single pendulum was simulated in software and then built on a rotary base. A fuzzy controller was used to show its advantages as a nonlinear controller since bringing the pendulum inverted is extremely nonlinear. The controller was implemented in a Motorola 6811 microcontroller. A double pendulum was simulated and fuzzy control was used to hold it in a vertical position. The double pendulum was not built into hardware for lack of time. This project was for training and to show advantages of fuzzy control.

9The Suspense Project: 1959-06-07 The Pit And The Pendulum

By

Raymond Burr stars in the fourth broadcast of this famous Edgar Allan Poe story about the Spanish Inquisition. It was adapted by John Dickson Carr for its original 1943 production. The first two broadcasts featured Broadway stars Henry Hull and Jose Ferrer. The third broadcast starred Vincent Price. Details and background of those productions can be found at: 1943 Henry Hull  https://archive.org/details/TSP430112   provides access to the recordings for download and streaming 1947 Jose Ferrer  https://archive.org/details/TSP471128 provides access to the recordings for download and streaming 1957 Vincent Price  https://archive.org/details/TSP571110 provides access to the recordings for download and streaming The program was recorded on Wednesday, May 20, 1959. To allow for Burr’s obligations in the filming of Perry Mason episodes, rehearsal began at 7:30pm and continued to 10:00pm when recording began. That session included in-studio edits. Final production edits and music were added in the days that followed. Two recordings have survived, and the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) recording is preferred for its better sound . It has not been in wide circulation. The surviving network recording is heavily edited and is in very good sound, an improvement compared to common network recordings. Its commercials have been edited out, but its network ID at the end is intact. Many other network recordings that circulated in the past did not have the Robson monologue, which this does. The cast: RAYMOND BURR (Jean Dálbret), Patricia Sills (Beatrice Valdez), Jay Novello (Pedro Espila the Grand Inquisitor), Ben Wright (Antonio the 2nd Inquistor / Clerk), George Walsh (Narrator)

12The Suspense Project: 1947-11-28 The Pit And The Pendulum

By

Suspense has no sponsor with the expiration of the Roma Wines contract. William Spier filed any new scripts away for the future time when the series attracted a new sponsor. At this time, however, it still seemed unlikely that Suspense could continue. To manage show expenses, Suspense was aired nationally and the period of separate east and west broadcasts ended, never to return. The first repeated script for this period was John Dickson Carr’s for the Edgar Allen Poe classic The Pit and the Pendulum. It originally starred Broadway star Henry Hull, so it is fitting that a highly regarded Broadway star, Jose Ferrer, be cast in this role. Background on the 1943 script and performance can be found at  https://archive.org/details/TSP430112 which is where the recording can be accessed This is a much richer production than the original from 1943. The script would be produced again in the Robson years of Suspense. This 1947 production is the best of the three. This script was originally planned as a repeat a few weeks earlier with Edmond O’Brien. It could be that the signing of Ferrer was the reason for the switch to The Argyle Album for that broadcast. Suspense was usually booking guests six to eight weeks prior to an appearance. Some guests were being cancelled once it was determined that the Roma contract would expire. This was Jose Ferrer’s only Suspense appearance. The cast: JOSE FERRER (Jean D’Albret), John McIntire (Pedro Espila, the Grand Inquisitor), Jeanette Nolan (Beatrice Valdez), Elliott Lewis (Antonio, the 2nd Inquisitor), Eric Snowdon (Clerk of Court), Joe Kearns (Signature Voice / 3rd voice), Paul McVey (Braunton, the 4th voice), Lucille Jones, Jack Kelly, Dick Pedicini, Corinne Scott (Ad-Lib murmers)

15The Suspense Project: 1957-11-10 The Pit And The Pendulum

By

Vincent Price stars in the third broadcast of this famous Edgar Allan Poe story about the Spanish Inquisition. It was adapted by John Dickson Carr for its original 1943 production. This may not be the best of the four Suspense broadcasts from a production standpoint, but Vincent Price does take this tape-produced tight-budget era performance and makes it a cut above what it would have been otherwise. The two prior broadcasts featured Broadway stars. The 1943 production starred Henry Hull, and the 1947 one starred Jose Ferrer. Details and background of the two productions can be found at: 1943 Henry Hull https://archive.org/details/TSP430112 provides access to the recordings for download and streaming 1947 Jose Ferrer https://archive.org/details/TSP471128 provides access to the recordings for download and streaming The 1947 broadcast, just weeks after the cancellation of the Roma Wines sponsorship, still had the full orchestral support, that the series was known for, in its favor. It would have been interesting to hear what Price would have brought to a production with equivalent resources that Ferrer had. The program was recorded on Thursday, October 31, 1957 (Halloween… how fitting!). Price’s movie set schedule must have been a challenge to accommodate. The pre-recording of programs allowed the flexibility of fitting Suspense appearances into the schedules of guest stars who were now busy with both movies and television. Price loved performing on radio, so he was probably quite pleased that Robson could arrange a session at a favorable time for him and gain the cooperation of the other performers and artists. Rehearsal began at 8:30pm and concluded at 10:00pm. Recording and editing began at 10:00pm and concluded at 1:30am, the wee hours of November 1, 1957. There are three surviving recordings of this episode, a network recording that is the preferred listening option , and two Armed Forces Radio Service recordings, AFRS#656 and AFRS#958. The recordings can be differentiated by the announcements after the Robson opening monologue: AFRS#656: US Post Office AFRS#958: Joe and Daphne Forsythe skit All three recordings are in very good sound. The network recording is in the best sound , and is usually preferred because it was the way it was first heard by the listening audience. AFRS#958 is in nearly equivalent sound. The other AFRS#656 has somewhat duller sound. The cast: Vincent Price (Jean D’Albret), Ellen Morgan (Beatrice Valdez), Jay Novello (Pedro Espila, the Grand Inquisitor), Ben Wright (Clerk), John Hoyt (Antonio, the 2nd Inquisitor), George Walsh (Narrator)

3Happy Unfortunate

By

Book's cover

Here are two early stories by the well known SF Author Robert Silverberg. <br /><br /> The Happy Unfortunate was published first in Amazing Stories in 1957 and explores the angst caused when the human race reaches into space but at the cost of needing to breed a new species; specialized 'spacers' who can withstand the tremendous rigors of acceleration. <br /><br /> The Hunted Heroes was published in Amazing stories a year earlier, in 1956. It is a futuristic story that holds great hope for the resilience of the human race after the war destroys most of the world.

6Drug Themes in Science Fiction

By

Science fiction is more often a reflection of existing societal trends than a prediction of trends to come. The upsurge in drug use is precisely mirrored by the upsurge in the use of such themes in science fiction. Science fiction is as much a guide to where we are as it is a vision of where we are going. A literature so popular with the young, commanding so intense and devoted a following, can be of significant value in revealing the patterns contemporary society is taking and will take in the years just ahead. - Summary by Robert Silverberg, from Introduction
