This research was initiated in June 1982. The early work began with an investigation of commercially available application generators. This was undertaken because of a belief that such systems provide a major increase in programming productivity, at least for a narrow range of 'edp' applications. The plan called for investigating systems such as RAMIS, NOMAD and FOCUS with the goal of determining what features contributed to this improvement. The investigators were successful in that they isolated what they believe to be the major features that contribute to increased programming productivity, namely an application generator's built-in interface to a database management system, its non-procedural programming language constructs, and the high-level operators for specific operations. The main activity during the previous nine months has been to see if the investigators could design these features into a general purpose programming language. They decided to use Ada as the starting point. They needed to design an extension of Ada that permits the language to interface with a database management system. They concluded that this interface should not merely be a set of remote procedure calls, but a true extension of the language. This implied that they had to extend the type facility and provide new operators, while preserving the design principles of the language. This is the logical first step towards their goal of incorporating true application generator features into a conventional programming language. Many modern parallel computing systems are heterogeneous at their node level. Such nodes may comprise general purpose CPUs and accelerators (such as, GPU, or Intel Xeon Phi) that provide high performance with suitable energy-consumption characteristics. However, exploiting the available performance of heterogeneous architectures may be challenging. There are various parallel programming frameworks (such as, OpenMP, OpenCL, OpenACC, CUDA) and selecting the one that is suitable for a target context is not straightforward. In this paper, we study empirically the characteristics of OpenMP, OpenACC, OpenCL, and CUDA with respect to programming productivity, performance, and energy. To evaluate the programming productivity we use our homegrown tool CodeStat, which enables us to determine the percentage of code lines that was required to parallelize the code using a specific framework. We use our tool x-MeterPU to evaluate the energy consumption and the performance. Experiments are conducted using the industry-standard SPEC benchmark suite and the Rodinia benchmark suite for accelerated computing on heterogeneous systems that combine Intel Xeon E5 Processors with a GPU accelerator or an Intel Xeon Phi co-processor.

This document is the final technical report for work under Air Force Office of Scientific Research Contract No. 82-0232. It is divided into several chapters. The first chapter deals with the specific research areas that were investigated and discusses the accomplishments for each. During this period, the investigators have focused on how to increase the power of programming languages for building man-computer dialogues. More specifically they see such dialogues in terms of a network of screens that might potentially be communicated to the end user. Different screens of data are shown depending on user responses. A programming language must make it easy to specify a network of such screens, describe the layout of any particular screen, and provide editing capabilities, validity checking of inputs, and scrolling capabilities. Automated analysis of recursive derivations in logic programming is known to be a hard problem. Both termination and non-termination are undecidable problems in Turing-complete languages. However, some declarative languages offer a practical work-around for this problem, by making a clear distinction between whether a program is meant to be understood inductively or coinductively. For programs meant to be understood inductively, termination must be guaranteed, whereas for programs meant to be understood coinductively, productive non-termination (or "productivity") must be ensured. In practice, such classification helps to better understand and implement some non-terminating computations. Logic programming was one of the first declarative languages to make this distinction: in the 1980's, Lloyd and van Emden's "computations at infinity" captured the big-step operational semantics of derivations that produce infinite terms as answers. In modern terms, computations at infinity describe "global productivity" of computations in logic programming. Most programming languages featuring coinduction also provide an observational, or small-step, notion of productivity as a computational counterpart to global productivity. This kind of productivity is ensured by checking that finite initial fragments of infinite computations can always be observed to produce finite portions of their infinite answer terms. In this paper we introduce a notion of observational productivity for logic programming as an algorithmic approximation of global productivity, give an effective procedure for semi-deciding observational productivity, and offer an implemented automated observational productivity checker for logic programs.

This study explores the potential applications of mathematical programming (MP) to a capital rationing problem of the Department of Defense. It demonstrates that the current method of selecting projects for funding results in a suboptimal economic mix of capital investment projects. Based on data from the Fiscal Year 1985 Productivity Investment Fund (PIF) program, substantial dollar savings are likely if PIF projects are selected using MP instead of ranking. Using a single-criterion MP model, the opportunity cost of ranking (defined as the difference between the net present value (NPV) the mix found by MP and the NPV of the mix actually funded by the DoD) was $205.6 million. The economic superiority of the MP-selected mix was demonstrated over broad ranges of budget ceilings and discount rates. The average opportunity cost of ranking ranged from $23 million to $242 million, depending on the ranking criterion or method used. Two multiple-criteria MP models were also developed and tested using the FY85 PIF data. The mixes found by these models were economically superior to those found by ranking, when pre-specified objectives (involving minimum levels of return on investment and labor savings) were set for the solution mix.

Early in his life Samuel Butler began to carry a note-book and to write down in it anything he wanted to remember; it might be something he heard some one say, more commonly it was something he said himself. In one of these notes he gives a reason for making them:<br></br>“One’s thoughts fly so fast that one must shoot them; it is no use trying to put salt on their tails.”<br></br>So he bagged as many as he could hit and preserved them, re-written on loose sheets of paper which constituted a sort of museum stored with the wise, beautiful, and strange creatures that were continually winging their way across the field of his vision. As he became a more expert marksman his collection increased and his museum grew so crowded that he wanted a catalogue. In 1874 he started an index, and this led to his reconsidering the notes, destroying those that he remembered having used in his published books and re-writing the remainder. The re-writing shortened some but it lengthened others and suggested so many new ones that the index was soon of little use and there seemed to be no finality about it. In 1891 he attached the problem afresh and made it a rule to spend an hour every morning re-editing his notes and keeping his index up to date. At his death, in 1902, he left five bound volumes, with the contents dated and indexed, about 225 pages of closely written sermon paper to each volume, and more than enough unbound and unindexed sheets to made a sixth volume of equal size. - Summary by Henry Festing Jones

Rufus Matthew Jones (January 25, 1863 – June 16, 1948) was an American religious leader, writer, magazine editor, philosopher, and college professor. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haverford Emergency Unit (a precursor to the American Friends Service Committee).
