3Microsoft Research Audio 104781: Dynamic Semantics Of Programming Languages And Applications To Testing

By

In my talk I will report on the work in progress. The initial idea of the project was to test available compilers of C-like languages. Our plan is the following: Choose a reasonable subset of the language to be tested. Formalize the semantics of the sub-language in AsmL. Produce tons of different programs. Using the AsmL Test tool, build test sequences for all these programs to check the correctness of the executable binary produced by the compiler. We started with a very simple fragment of the language (if, while, break, goto, simple function call). The next reasonable step is to add exceptions handling, arithmetical expressions, classes. 13An Evaluation Framework And Comparative Analysis Of The Widely Used First Programming Languages.

By

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Computer programming is the core of computer science curriculum. Several programming languages have been used to teach the first course in computer programming, and such languages are referred to as first programming language (FPL). The pool of programming languages has been evolving with the development of new languages, and from this pool different languages have been used as FPL at different times. Though the selection of an appropriate FPL is very important, yet it has been a controversial issue in the presence of many choices. Many efforts have been made for designing a good FPL, however, there is no ample way to evaluate and compare the existing languages so as to find the most suitable FPL. In this article, we have proposed a framework to evaluate the existing imperative, and object oriented languages for their suitability as an appropriate FPL. Furthermore, based on the proposed framework we have devised a customizable scoring function to compute a quantitative suitability score for a language, which reflects its conformance to the proposed framework. Lastly, we have also evaluated the conformance of the widely used FPLs to the proposed framework, and have also computed their suitability scores.

18DTIC ADA1004036: Department Of Defense Requirements For High Order Computer Programming Languages. 'Ironman'.

By

The technical requirements for a common DoD high order programming language given here are a synthesis of the requirements submitted by the Military Departments. They specify a set of language characteristics that are appropriate for embedded computer applications (i.e., command and control, communications, avionics, shipboard, test equipment, software development and maintenance, and support applications). The changes that produced this revision reflect the many comments on previous versions received from the Services, military contractors, the research community, and other organizations during 1976. This revision does not alter the basic intent or substance of the December 1975 (i.e., 'TINMAN') version of the requirements. it does incorporate changes to improve clarity, to correct errors, and to ensure feasibility. The revised requirements are hierarchically organized with an outline similar to that expected in a language defining document. Section 1 gives the general design criteria. These provide the major goals that influenced the selection of specific requirements and provide a basis for language design decisions that are not otherwise dealt with in the requirements. Sections 2 through 12 give more specific technical requirements on the language and its translators. The requirements call for the inclusion of features to satisfy specific needs in the design, implementation, and maintenance of military software, specify many general and specific characteristics desired for the language, and call for the exclusion of certain undesirable characteristics. Section 13 gives some of the intentions and expectations for development, control, and use of the language.

19DTIC ADA1013222: Values And Objects In Programming Languages.

By

The terms value-oriented and object-oriented are used to describe both programming languages and programming styles. This paper will describe the differences between values and objects and to show that their proper discrimination can be a valuable aid to conquering program complexity. The first section will show that values amount to timeless abstractions for which the concepts of updating, sharing and instantiation have no meaning. The second section will show that objects exist in time and, hence, can be created, destroyed, copied, shared and updated. The third section shows that proper discrimination of these concepts in programming languages will clarify problems such as the role of state in functional programming. The paper concludes by demonstrating the use of the value/object distinction as a tool for program organization. (Author)

20DTIC ADA213958: The Family Of Concurrent Logic Programming Languages

By

Concurrent logic languages are high-level programming languages for parallel and distributed systems that offer a wide range of both known novel concurrent programming techniques. Being logic programming languages, they preserve many advantages of the abstract logic programming model, including the logical reading of programs and computations, the convenience of representing data-structures with logical terms and manipulating them using unification, and the amenability to meta-programming. Operationally, their model of computation consists of a dynamic set of concurrent processes, communicating by instantiating shared logical variables, synchronizing by waiting for variables to be instantiated, and making the nondeterministic choices, possibly based on the availability of values of variables. This paper surveys the family of concurrent logic programming languages within a uniform operational framework. It demonstrates the expressive power of even the simplest language in the family, and investigates how varying the basic synchronization and control constructs affect the expressiveness and efficiency of the resulting languages. In addition, the paper reports on techniques for sequential and parallel implementations of languages in this family, mentions their applications to date, and relates these languages to the abstract logic programming model, to the programming language Prolog, and to other concurrent computational models and programming languages. (KR)

21ERIC EJ1060073: Visual Teaching Model For Introducing Programming Languages

By

This study examines detailed usage of online training videos that were designed to address specific course problems that were encountered in an online computer programming course. The study presents the specifics of a programming course where training videos were used to provide students with a quick start path to learning a new programming language in their coursework. The videos addressed common learning challenges with integrated development environments (IDE) to include the following areas: structure and menu options, program code and structure, compile option, execution of program code, debugging activities, file organization and use, and output concerns. The study uses an analysis of problems encountered in using new programming languages to define the subjects that the video training should address. The study is expected to provide a guide for professional teaching practice in introducing computer programming and is expected to fill a void in research literature concerning the specific aspects of programming courses that hinder computer program learning.

By

The report discusses simulation languages, their characteristics, the reasons for using them, and their advantages and disadvantages relative to other kinds of programming languages. Simulation languages are shown to assist in the design of simulation models through their 'world view,' to expedite computer programming through their special purpose, high-level statements, and to encourage proper model analysis through their data collection, analysis, and reporting features. Ten particularly important simulation programming language features are identified: modeling a system's static state, modeling system dynamics, statistical sampling, data collection, analysis and display, monitoring and debugging, initialization and language usability. Examples of each of the four simulation languages, GPSS, SIMSCRIPT II, SIMULA, and CSL, are used to illustrate how these features are implemented in different languages. The future development of simulation programming languages is dependent on advances in the fields of computer languages, computer graphics, and time sharing. Some current research is noted, and outstanding research areas are identified.

23DTIC ADA089733: Mathematical Semantics For Higher Order Programming Languages.

By

Complete operational and mathematical semantics are presented for a higher order applicative algorithmic language (BAL). Both semantics involve partially ordered domains closed under limits of convergent sequences. Procedure calls are formalized via lambda calculus reductions, or copy rule. Evaluations involve a more general form of computability described as nondeterministic computability. The mathematical semantics is obtained via embeddings in reflexive domains. Both semantics are proved to be equivalent, and several applications are given. The adequacy of the copy rule is proved in standard situations where computability is deterministic. Several examples are presented. (Author)

THE FIRST TASK OF THE HOL Working Group was to formulate a set of requirements consistent with the levies of the Military Departments. This effort proceeded as follows: While there is no intent to replace the already standard COBOL and FORTRAN in their field of application, initially there was no reason to unnecessarily restrict the requirements to only those areas such as real-time applications or weapons systems where the major problems are, although this area must receive emphasis. Therefore, requirements were solicited from as broad a base as possible, to be prioritized later as required. Further, inquiries were not restricted to those programs presently using high order languages, rather, a major thrust of the effort is to provide HOL's to meet the requirements of those who are now constrained to use an assembly language for lack of a suitable HOL. The results of four months of such input were put together in a more concrete form, one which could then pretend to represent a fairly complete set of requirements, although still a tentative set. This document was called the 'woodenman,' and it too was distributed widely. It provided a more rigorous framework for specific comment. On the basis of all inputs and the official responses from each of the Military Departments, a more complete set of requirements has evolved and is presented here as a 'tinman.' This document represents a set of requirements for high order computer programming language consistent with the input from the Military Services.

33Domain-Specific Languages Of Mathematics: Presenting Mathematical Analysis Using Functional Programming

By

We present the approach underlying a course on "Domain-Specific Languages of Mathematics", currently being developed at Chalmers in response to difficulties faced by third-year students in learning and applying classical mathematics (mainly real and complex analysis). The main idea is to encourage the students to approach mathematical domains from a functional programming perspective: to identify the main functions and types involved and, when necessary, to introduce new abstractions; to give calculational proofs; to pay attention to the syntax of the mathematical expressions; and, finally, to organise the resulting functions and types in domain-specific languages.

35A Comparative Study Of Programming Languages In Rosetta Code

By

Sometimes debates on programming languages are more religious than scientific. Questions about which language is more succinct or efficient, or makes developers more productive are discussed with fervor, and their answers are too often based on anecdotes and unsubstantiated beliefs. In this study, we use the largely untapped research potential of Rosetta Code, a code repository of solutions to common programming tasks in various languages, to draw a fair and well-founded comparison. Rosetta Code offers a large data set for analysis. Our study is based on 7087 solution programs corresponding to 745 tasks in 8 widely used languages representing the major programming paradigms (procedural: C and Go; object-oriented: C# and Java; functional: F# and Haskell; scripting: Python and Ruby). Our statistical analysis reveals, most notably, that: functional and scripting languages are more concise than procedural and object-oriented languages; C is hard to beat when it comes to raw speed on large inputs, but performance differences over inputs of moderate size are less pronounced and allow even interpreted languages to be competitive; compiled strongly-typed languages, where more defects can be caught at compile time, are less prone to runtime failures than interpreted or weakly-typed languages. We discuss implications of these results for developers, language designers, and educators.

47Block Shelves For Visual Programming Languages

By

The blocks editor, such as the editor in Scratch, is widely applied for visual programming languages (VPL) nowadays. Despite it's friendly for non-programmers, it exists three main limitations while displaying block codes: (1) the readability, (2) the program structure, and (3) the re-use. To cope with these issues, we introduce a novel formatting tool, block shelves, into the editor for organizing blocks. A user could utilize shelves to constitute a user-defined structure for the VPL projects. Based on the experiment results, block shelves improves the block code navigating and searching significantly. Besides, for achieving code re-use, users could use shelf export/import to share/re-use their block codes between projects in the file format of eXtensible Markup Language (xml.) All functions were demonstrated on MIT App inventor 2, while all modifications were made in Google Blockly.
