A program for control system modeling, simulation and realization useable by the novice programmer was developed for interactive use on a microcomputer. The program uses two software packages; PL/1-80 from Digital Research and DBASE II from Ashton Tate. The paper covers a complete example for modeling and simulation of a minimum time response ripple free controller for a 1/S(2) plant. The program uses two sample rates, one for modeling the computer and the other for modeling the plant. Variable delays due to computer computation are included and corrected semi-transparent to the control designer. .This thesis covers two different fields of interest, one for the experienced control system designer yet a novice programmer, and the other for the novice control designer yet an experienced computer programmer. Key programming concepts include using a business database to automatically program a control problem requiring a scientific language.

This thesis examines the use of an inexpensive commercial microcomputer for the preparation of Naval Reporting Structure Operational Reports. These highly formatted reports provide critical unit information used by the National Command Authority and Joint Chiefs of Staff in assessing the nation's defense posture. Since these reports are processed by computer, correct formatting and data entry are essential to preserve the timeliness and accuracy of the information. The requirements of a Report Origination System are investigated from the perspective of the system operator, the message drafter and the message releasing authority. Interfaces are developed which provides for system application to different hardware configurations. A subset of the Ada language is used to allow structured programming and data abstraction techniques. Elements of the Unit Status and Identity Report (UNITREP) are implemented using this method.

The proposal put forward in this presentation centers on the use of the microcomputer for the generation of educational research, both as a powerful tool for information collection and as a means for analyzing the generated data. The microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) principles described in this paper may be used in rural classroom settings as well as in a broader range of research, e.g., city- or state-wide studies. This presentation examines the MBL programming component and its application to a specific research question in special education: the identification of a processing disorder subtype of the learning disabled (LD) student population. The suggestions contained herein are intended for potential researchers who are familiar with microcomputers. Among the advantages of subtype studies are that: (1) they are sensitive to the possibility that typical learners demonstrate cognitive processing strategies similar to those identified in non-typical learners; (2) they are less prone to errors arising from conclusions based on coincidental occurrences; and (3) they are less prone to statistical averaging difficulties encountered when comparing LD students with non-LD students. The increased availability of students resulting from moving the studies to the schools is an added advantage. Findings based on more broad-based locally-defined subgroups of LD students have promise for enhancing the understanding of the LD handicap and, as such, may lead to more effective individual educational plans. State offices of public instruction would particularly benefit from such research in justifying current LD programs to budget conscious legislatures. An Applesoft BASIC program designed to evaluate the dependent variables of performance and reaction time is included as an illustrative analysis of an MBL program. Eight references are listed. (DJR)

The importance of mathematical models as tools in decision making has motivated increased interest in that theory and its implementation. This paper describes fundamental techniques of linear programming which have been combined to offer a microcomputer based optimization package. The package is machine portable and will accept input from files created by other programs. Thus the package affords the opportunity to build a mathematical programming system based on its ability to solve bounded variable linear sub-programs. Written in JRT PASCAL 3.0 and implemented on a portable, 8-bit microcomputer (KAYPRO-II), this package places the fundamental tool of optimization in the office, classroom and home. (Author)

NPS-PASCAL is a student research project at the Naval Postgraduate School, the goal of which is the implementation of the PASCAL programming language on a microcomputer system. NPS-PASCAL will consist of two programs, a compiler which produces intermediate code, and an interpreter, which will interpret the intermediate code, or a translator, which will produce target machine code. NPS-PASCAL is designed to conform to the requirements of the PASCAL Standard, as defined by the British Standards Institute/International Standards Organization Working Draft/3. The compiler program, the subject of this thesis, performs the lexical, syntactic and semantic analysis of a PASCAL program. NPS-PASCAL is written in INTEL's PL/M-80 programming language and executes on the CP/M operating system. (Author)
