When scheduling our physical training workouts we often skip the rest day and the cool down.  We account for the 30 minutes of cardio, but not the 5 min of cool down.  When we are trying to get in shape we would like to think that we can hit it hard 7 days per week and accelerate our progress, but our bodies don't work that way.  The unique thing is our brains, our bodies, our souls are all wired similarly...we need to intentionally engage them to keep them in shape, but we also need to rest or cool down so we can recover and be at our best when we engage. Astronauts Cady Coleman and Suni Williams conducted an underwater practice spacewalk session at Johnson Space Center's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory August 2. The session was to help International Space Station team members identify challenges Expedition 24 astronauts Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson may encounter on the first of two planned spacewalks later this week to replace a failed ammonia pump module that helps cool the orbiting complex. The spare replacement unit was delivered to the station on the STS-121 mission in July 2006.

This research examines the subject of practice and transfer effects using an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) teaching novel knowledge and skills (i.e., flight engineering). Previous research has shown that when more time is spent exercising new cognitive skills, performance is improved and the cognitive load is reduced (e.g., Ackerman, 1988; Anderson, 1987; Schneider and Shiffrin, 1977). Other research has demonstrated that when the number (or variety) of example problems is small, Teaming tends to be rapid, but transfer tends to be weak (e.g., Carlson and Yaure, 1990; Gick and Holyoak, 1987). The purpose of this paper was to test these ideas in a controlled setting using an ITS that was manipulated to yield two contrasting learning environments: extended (12 problems per problem set) and 'constrained' (3 problems per problem set). These environments differed only in the number of practice problems requiring solution in the various problem sets. Results showed that while subjects in the constrained environment completed the curriculum significantly faster than subjects in the extended version, there were no differences between conditions on any of the outcome measures. But when the data were examined across problem sets, latency and error-type differences between the two groups were found.

This paper shares new insights on the first-year university student transition experience. Our research focuses on students' practice of academic skills developed in a "Foundations for Learning" course, from their own perspective, after they completed the course. Once they had an opportunity to practice what they learned in subsequent courses we investigated how such practice impacts students' attitudes toward learning and their university experience.
