A key objective of the smart grid is to improve reliability of utility services to end users. This requires strengthening resilience of distribution networks that lie at the edge of the grid. However, distribution networks are exposed to external disturbances such as hurricanes and snow storms where electricity service to customers is disrupted repeatedly. External disturbances cause large-scale power failures that are neither well-understood, nor formulated rigorously, nor studied systematically. This work studies resilience of power distribution networks to large-scale disturbances in three aspects. First, a non-stationary random process is derived to characterize an entire life cycle of large-scale failure and recovery. Second, resilience is defined based on the non-stationary random process. Close form analytical expressions are derived under specific large-scale failure scenarios. Third, the non-stationary model and the resilience metric are applied to a real life example of large-scale disruptions due to Hurricane Ike. Real data on large-scale failures from an operational network is used to learn time-varying model parameters and resilience metrics.

Smart energy grid is an emerging area for new applications of machine learning in a non-stationary environment. Such a non-stationary environment emerges when large-scale failures occur at power distribution networks due to external disturbances such as hurricanes and severe storms. Power distribution networks lie at the edge of the grid, and are especially vulnerable to external disruptions. Quantifiable approaches are lacking and needed to learn non-stationary behaviors of large-scale failure and recovery of power distribution. This work studies such non-stationary behaviors in three aspects. First, a novel formulation is derived for an entire life cycle of large-scale failure and recovery of power distribution. Second, spatial-temporal models of failure and recovery of power distribution are developed as geo-location based multivariate non-stationary GI(t)/G(t)/Infinity queues. Third, the non-stationary spatial-temporal models identify a small number of parameters to be learned. Learning is applied to two real-life examples of large-scale disruptions. One is from Hurricane Ike, where data from an operational network is exact on failures and recoveries. The other is from Hurricane Sandy, where aggregated data is used for inferring failure and recovery processes at one of the impacted areas. Model parameters are learned using real data. Two findings emerge as results of learning: (a) Failure rates behave similarly at the two different provider networks for two different hurricanes but differently at the geographical regions. (b) Both rapid- and slow-recovery are present for Hurricane Ike but only slow recovery is shown for a regional distribution network from Hurricane Sandy.

This paper presents research results dealing with power MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) within the prognostics and health management of electronics. Experimental results are presented for the identification of the on-resistance as a precursor to failure of devices with die-attach degradation as a failure mechanism. Devices are aged under power cycling in order to trigger die-attach damage. In situ measurements of key electrical and thermal parameters are collected throughout the aging process and further used for analysis and computation of the on-resistance parameter. Experimental results show that the devices experience die-attach damage and that the on-resistance captures the degradation process in such a way that it could be used for the development of prognostics algorithms (data-driven or physics-based).

The current trend in modern electrical power systems for terrestrial and aerospace applications is to utilize dc at voltages well above the traditional levels of 12 to 42 Vdc. New airborne systems contain numerous uses of 270 Vdc, and bipolar systems with a 540 V differential are likely to appear in the near future. The use of high dc potentials create flash-over and arcing risks that are much more problematic than the traditional ac or low-voltage dc. Low-pressures experienced in aerospace environments exacerbate the dangers. Traditional overcurrent protective devices may be too slow to mitigate damage caused by high current arcing. Likewise, the extinction of a low current, impedance-limited dc arc may require active power removal since there is no natural zero-crossing. Achieving robustness in high-voltage dc power systems, then, requires adequate insulation design criteria and reliable failure mitigation. Some design specifications and guidelines will be reviewed and shortcomings identified. Even with technically sound designs, absolute elimination of flashover and arcing cannot be assured in realistic environments as systems age. Hence, critical systems will require detection and mitigation strategies to prevent catastrophic consequences.

The perception of the decision to stop an extreme physical effort, known as task failure, is a widely debated topic in the field of endurance sports (Burnley & Jones, 2018; Iannetta et al., 2022). This phenomenon can be understood as a continuum ranging from completely voluntary decisions, based on the perception of fatigue and self-control, to decisions perceived as involuntary, attributable to physiological or psychological limitations beyond the athlete's control. In the context of cycling, the use of advanced technologies such as power meters and heart rate monitors has transformed the way athletes regulate their effort (Sundström et al., 2013). Previous studies have shown that access to contextual information, such as elapsed time or distance, can influence performance and effort tolerance (Albertus et al., 2005; Mauger, 2009). For example, athletes who receive feedback or verbal encouragement tend to maintain higher motivation and prolong their effort compared to those without such information (Barwood et al., 2015; Midgley et al., 2018). However, the influence of the availability of objective performance information on the perception of the voluntariness of the decision to stop has not been studied. A previous study from our lab (Pérez-Díaz et al., 2025) showed that cyclists attribute task failure to a complex interaction of physiological, psychological, and contextual factors. The results highlighted that physical sensations such as muscle pain and breathing difficulty are the most prominent indicators at the point of maximal effort, but also revealed that a significant proportion of cyclists do not perceive having reached their maximal effort before stopping. Furthermore, cyclists who use power meters rated the decision to stop the effort as more involuntary than those who do not use power meters, possibly due to the influence of these technologies on the interpretation of performance and perceived effort levels. This study raises fundamental questions about how the perception of control and the availability of objective feedback could modulate the decision to stop the effort. The present study aims to explore these dynamics in a controlled experimental design. It seeks to determine whether access to power data affects the perception of voluntariness/involuntariness in the decision to stop. Additionally, it aims to confirm that access to performance information contributes to prolonging the effort, regardless of the perception of the voluntariness of the decision to stop.

Due to a post launch failure of a part a new plan for the Mars Global Surveyor was developed. This new plan involved the addition of many deep thermal cycles to the Power Shunt Assemblies (PSA's). This new plan exceeds the previous acceptance cold level, and fatigue life on packaging design. This presentation reviews the experiments that were used to test the capabilities of the PSA to function in the new situation. It also reviews the analyses preformed to verify the most likely failure mechanism, and the likelihood that these failures would impact the new mission requirements.
