The population of Hawaiian monk seals - one of the world's most critically endangered marine mammals - has been increasing 3 percent a year for the past three years, federal wildlife officials said. Hawaiian monk seals are making a comeback.They're one of the world's most critically endangered marine mammals. But their numbers have increased by 3 percent for each of the past three years, federal wildlife officials said.There are now about 1,400 of the seals in the wild, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.The rebound is being attributed to broader environmental changes, such as El Nino. The El Nino patterns can help boost the food supply for the seals that eat squid, eels, crab and other marine life.The monk seal population had been declining since the 1950s, when federal authorities counted 3,400 seals on Northwestern Hawaiian Island beaches. Federal officials want to return the population to that level.

This proposal aims to prove the efficacy of the Theory of Mind training on increasing cognitive empathy and theory of mind scores using a Māori cohort with the Empathic Accuracy Test and the Theory of Mind test. This proposal also aims to prove the effectiveness of objective empathy measures compared to subjective measures in combination with the intervention.

While the Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (long-covid) is emerging as a prevalent and debilitating condition, its aetiology remains poorly understood. This systematic review seeks to characterise the nature of exercise intolerance in a post COVID-19 population and assess the extent to which cardiac dysfunction may be playing a role. To achieve this, we will review studies which assess both functional capacity (with either cardiopulmonary exercise testing or 6-minute walk times) and echocardiography. What role does cardiac dysfunction play in the reduction of functional capacity associated with the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19?

This study aims to further elucidate the underlying mechanisms of contagious itch and public stigma towards skin conditions such as psoriasis. Moreover, a first step in reducing public stigma is planned by educating individuals about psoriasis and its emotional impact. To this end, participants will be looking at different standardized types of vignettes (e.g., revealing the skin condition psoriasis, talking about the associated itch symptoms, talking about the impact of having a skin disease) and various potential predictors of both public stigma and contagious itch will be assessed.

This study aims to examine the longitudinal association between sexual harassment and mental health problems during adolescence. Specifically, we aim 1. To investigate the longitudinal association between any experience of sexual harassment at age 16/17 and mental health outcomes (psychological distress, disordered eating symptoms, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and attempted suicide) at age 18-19 in a longitudinal cohort study, unstratified and stratified by gender. 1.1. To examine the potential longitudinal dose-response association between any experience of sexual harassment at age 16/17 and mental health outcomes age 18/19, i.e. the association between the number of sexual harassment experiences and mental health outcomes, unstratified and stratified by gender. 1.2. To examine the longitudinal association between different types of sexual harassment at age 16/17 and mental health outcomes at age 18/19, unstratified and stratified by gender. 1.3. To examine the longitudinal association between the location (work, school, other) of any type of sexual harassment at age 16/17 and mental health outcomes at age 18/19, unstratified and stratified by gender. 2. To examine the differential longitudinal association between any sexual harassment at age 16/17 and mental health outcomes at age 18-19 across socio-demographics indicators, including sexuality, ethnicity, and financial disadvantage, separately and stratified by gender. 3. To estimate the potential population mental health impacts of sexual harassment. We will use the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children which is a birth cohort following a representative sample of approximately 5,000 children recruited ages 4-5 in 2003-04 and their families from across Australia (https://growingupinaustralia.gov.au/about-study).

Scoping Review Protocol

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) was developed by Paul Gilbert (Gilbert, 2014) and draws on research in neuropsychology, attachment theory, evolutionary psychology, social psychology, and Buddhism. Compassion has been defined as an affective and behavioral process consisting of five elements: recognition of suffering, understanding the universality of suffering in the human experience, developing empathy for the sufferer, tolerating uncomfortable affects, and being motivated to act to decrease suffering (Strauss et al., 2016). Correlational studies have shown that higher self-compassion scores are associated with greater life satisfaction and better interpersonal relationships (Barnard & Curry, 2011; Neff, 2003). On the contrary, lower self-compassion scores are associated with more anxiety, depression, self-criticism, and avoidance (Leary, Tate, Adams, Allen, & Hancock, 2007; MacBeth & Gumley, 2012; Neff, 2003; Neff & Vonk, 2009). Initially considered a personality trait, studies suggest that self-compassion skills can be trained through practice and thus be a protective mechanism for mental disorders (Neff, 2003). This idea is the basis for the development of compassion-centered interventions (Germer & Neff, 2013; Paul Gilbert & Procter, 2006). Thus, compassion-based therapy aims to help the individual develop more compassion by adopting a posture of acceptance and acknowledgement of their suffering, with the benevolent intention of relieving it (Gilbert, 2009). Self-compassion has been conceptualized as a transdiagnostic skill facilitating emotional regulation (Berking & Whitley, 2014; Diedrich, Grant, Hofmann, Hiler, & Berking, 2014; Inwood & Ferrari, 2018). Effectively, the development of self-compassion would allow individuals to more flexibly regulate their emotions according to contexts (Svendsen et al., 2016) and thus develop more flexibility (Marshall & Brockman, 2016). To our knowledge, only one research study has investigated the link between flexibility and self-compassion, and the results that have emerged are very encouraging (Svendsen et al., 2016). Finally, self-compassion would also increase feelings of emotional self-efficacy as it allows the individual to focus on their resources rather than their difficulties although this has not been clearly identified by research (Iskender, 2009; Moeini, Sarikhani-Khorrami, & Ghamarani, 2019). Today, it therefore seems important to shed light on the processes of change at the heart of CFT and to understand its role on emotional regulation, processes that are crucial for the well-being of individuals (Inwood & Ferrari, 2018).

This is a pre-registration for the adaptation of the COMPERSe (Classifying Our Metamour/Partner Emotional Response Scale; Flicker et al., 2021) questionnaire to the Polish-speaking population. The study aims to assess the validity and reliability of the scale. Also, we want to find out if the level of compersion differs depending on the different forms of non-monogamous relationships.

We are conducting this scoping review to explore and identify community-based health communication in low- and middle-income settings to understand the implications among the population for best practice implementation pilot.

This is a qualitative study which aims to explore the lived experiences of Intimate Image Abuse (often called Revenge Porn) of a UK adult population. Participants will be recruited through social media, The Revenge Porn Helpline, individual faculties at Coventry University, and Coventry University Sona. Participants’ lived experiences will be explored through semi-structured interviews (see attached proposal for details). A semi-structured interview schedule has been created for these interviews (attached). The data gathered form these interviews will be analysed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Affected by differences in the pharmacokinetics (PK) of lenalidomide, the toxicity of lenalidomide varies among different patients, with severe toxicity leading to dose reduction or discontinuation. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health conditions globally, with prevalence rates in the UK estimated to be around 16% for each condition in the available Office of National Statistics data for 2021 (ONS, 2021). With an increase in prevalence rate of 18.4% from 2005 to 2015 (World Health Organization, 2017) The effect of depression on social engagement is well documented (Steger & Kashdan, 2009) in several populations, most notably those in later life (e.g., Hajek et al., 2017), though this literature seems to be lacking in working age populations. Therefore, determining the effect of interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptomatology should also seek to investigate how they affect measures of social engagement. In the Beckian model of understanding mood disorders (the “negative cognitive triad”), symptomatology arises from beliefs about the world, oneself and others (Beck, 1976). For example, if a person receives a text from a family member reading ‘call me if you can’, that may interact with these negative beliefs and interpret it as a message that something terrible has happened. Interpretation refers to the process of integrating several features of a situation to construct a mental representation of that situation in such a way as to resolve any inherent ambiguity (Hirsch et al., 2016), such as a text message which may have multiple meanings. A situation is likely to have several potential interpretations generated and held in working memory, with the selection of one potentially guided from previous experiences (Everaert et al., 2020), the negative beliefs detailed in Beck’s cognitive triad. This, however, suggests a homunculus guiding the selection of an interpretation from a list. Cognitive control capabilities and attentional biases may offer a more plausible explanation. The dual process model proposes that processing of information occurs via two streams, a bottom-up stream driven by salient information present in the environment, and a top-down stream driven by cognitive appraisals of task demands to achieve a particular goal (Corbetta and Shulman. 2002). Should an individual display attentional biases, this may lead to a preferential processing of negative environmental stimuli, which in turn leads to an increased likelihood of a negative interpretation being selected. Equally, this may interact with top-down cognition resulting in an individual either attempting to inhibit or divert attention away from a less helpful interpretation and towards a set of cognitions and actions better suited to meeting task demands. In other words, the objects currently being held in working memory will be subject to cognitive control. Indeed, working memory capacity is largely analogous to cognitive control capability, with variation in working memory capacity found to track with variation in the ability to exert differing forms of cognitive control (Engle, 2010; Redick, 2011; Boag et al., 2021). Should there be deficits in cognitive control capabilities, this reduced capacity to orient attention and cognition away from affectively salient but maladaptive stimuli can explain both the onset and maintenance of mood disorders and negative interpretations. This is found in the literature, with impaired cognitive control capabilities and negative interpretative biases linked to the onset and maintenance of anxiety (Berggren & Derakshan, 2013) and depression (Koster et al., 2017). Due to the inherent ambiguity in many social situations (Huppert et al., 2007), cognitive control deficits may be particularly important of the context of maintaining positive social relationships and activity engagement. Research investigating the efficacy of trainings targeting cognitive control have found improvements in both depressed (Koster et al., 2017) and anxious (Sari et al., 2016) populations, though the robustness of these effects are in question (Melby-Lervag, 2016). Many concerns arise from issues of sample size, experimental rigour and the transfer of effects, leading to the current study.

We obtain gain of the probe field at multiple frequencies in a closed three-level V-type system using frequency modulated pump field. There is no associated population inversion among the atomic states of the probe transition. We describe both the steady-state and transient dynamics of this system. Under suitable conditions, the system exhibits large gain simultaneously at series of frequencies far removed from resonance. Moreover, the system can be tailored to exhibit multiple frequency regimes where the probe experiences anomalous dispersion accompanied by negligible gain-absorption over a large bandwidth, a desirable feature for obtaining superluminal propagation of pulses with negligible distortion.

We use Chandra data to study the incidence and properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in 16 intermediate redshift ($0.5 < z < 1.1$) X-ray-selected galaxy groups in the Chandra Deep Field-South. We measure an AGN fraction of $f(L_{X,H} > 10^{42}; M_R 10^{41}$ erg/s) = 25), we find only 4 emission-line AGN, 3 of which are also X-ray bright. Furthermore, most of the X-ray AGN in our groups are optically-dull (i.e. lack strong emission-lines) similar to those found in low redshift X-ray groups and clusters of galaxies. This contrasts with the AGN population found in low redshift optically-selected groups which are dominated by emission-line AGN. The differences between the optically and X-ray-selected AGN populations in groups are consistent with a scenario where most AGN in the densest environments are currently in a low accretion state.
