Recent climate protests have used “extreme” tactics, such as road-blocking and throwing soup at paintings. Such tactics succeed in their aim of generating high-profile media attention, but have also resulted in considerable public debate regarding the likely effects on policy. A key question concerns the public's view of such actions as well as its views of how government should respond. Do such actions increase public support for more urgent climate action from government? Alternatively (or perhaps additionally), do "extreme" protest actions increase public support for greater police powers and the introduction of new measures to discourage protest? Such questions are of interest to policy makers, activists, journalists, academics and the public more generally. Interviews will be employed with members of the public as part of the larger University of Bristol Policy and Protest project to gather evidence that will inform policy in this domain.
