2Physiological Correlates Of Motivated Emotion Regulation And Its Effects On Effort, Emotion, And Downstream Memory

By

The purpose of this research is to characterize and quantify how motivational influences change emotional and physiological responses in healthy adults. Emotion regulation is key to both momentary and long-term adaptive behavior. Such effects might be influenced by the motivational contexts in which emotion regulation takes place, as well as consequences of motivation and emotion regulation strategy on subsequent memory for regulated stimuli. While reward motivation is typically linked with enhanced memory, motivation to down-regulate emotion may not lead to such benefits. In a previous 2-day behavioral study, we examined whether motivated emotion regulation predicted downstream memory and affect upon re-encounter of regulated stimuli. Memory was unexpectedly worse under motivation vs. baseline conditions regardless of regulation instruction, in contrast to prior work typically showing improvements in memory with reward. Instead, our results suggest that incentives may induce global changes in affect, modulating memory independently of strategy-dependent regulatory control processes. Specifically, our prior results suggest that motivational incentive might be linked with reduced memory as a by-product of down-regulated emotional arousal. Given the limitations of self-report measures in this work, this study plans to extend this work incorporating physiology measures including skin conductance and pupillometry to disentangle how changes in arousal with motivation and regulation may predict effort at regulation as well as downstream memory and emotional outcomes. We expect that incentive motivation will differentially influence emotion regulation processes in several ways including strategy selection, regulation success, and perceived effort. Additionally, motivation may impact longer-term outcomes, including recognition memory and emotional responses upon re-exposure to stimuli.

1Friendship

By

The idea, so common in the ancient writers, is not all a poetic conceit, that the soul of a man is only a fragment of a larger whole, and goes out in search of other souls in which it will find its true completion. We walk among worlds unrealized, until we have learned the secret of love. We know this, and in our sincerest moments admit this, even though we are seeking to fill up our lives with other ambitions and other hopes. In spite of the vulgar materialism of our day, we do feel that the spiritual side of life is the most important, and brings the only true joy. And friendship in its essence is spiritual. It is the free, spontaneous outflow of the heart, and is a gift from the great Giver. (Hugh Black)

2You Can't Win

By

Book's cover

'You Can't Win' is an autobiography that was serialized in the San Francisco Call and Post (1925). It became so popular that it was published as a book in 1926. The author recounts his experience as an itinerant, professional thief in the Western US and Canada from the late 1880s until around 1910. Mr. Black reformed his life over time, beginning with his incarceration in a Canadian prison, which afforded him, among other things, access to an excellent library. In later years, he often lectured on the subjects of criminology and prison reform. He disappeared in 1932 and was presumed dead by suicide. (Summary by Brian Fullen)
