Report of international summer institute in quantum chemistry and solid state physics.

The effort has been concentrated on investigations of the energy bands in semiconductors by optical methods dealing with the lead salt compounds Pbs, PbSe, and PbTe, as well as certain intermetallic semiconductors. This work also includes measurements of the reflectivity of intermetallic semiconductors. Investigations of the composition properties of lead telluride have resulted in a better understanding of the phase diagrams of lead telluride. We have continued work on surface effects and transport phenomena, and on the study of recombination lifetimes. The magnetic behavior of rare earth magnetic alloys has been examined. The effect of Zener's double exchange phenomenon has been obtained in certain manganese compounds. We have carried out theoretical work on crystal and magnetic anisotropy and how it relates to the intensity of magnetization and the Curie temperature. The physical properties of materials have been studied, in particular the properties of intermetallic metals, metal oxide whiskers, and the structure of fuzed silica.

These Proceedings contain the invited talks which were presented at the 10th International Winterschool on New Developments in Solid State Physics "New Frontiers in Low-Dimensional Physics", held at the Mauterndorf Castle, Mauterndorf, Salzburg, Austria. The major theme of this Meeting was, like that of its predecessors, most recent developments in the field of the growth, characterization, electronic, optical, acoustic and magnetic properties of low-dimensional systems, including also general aspects like the impact of nanostructure research on conventional Solid State Electronics. Topics which were presented included mechanisms of self organized growth of wire and dot structures, cleave edge overgrowth for the fabrication of atomically precise quantum dots, ground and excited states in quantum dots, spectroscopical investigations of dots, quantum dot lasers, quantum transport in dots. Corrections due to electron-electron interaction to the transport in disordered conductors were treated theoretically and the recently observed metal-to-insulator transition in two-dimensional systems was presented both with its implications for the scaling theory as well as in the light of new experimental results.

Physics of the Solid State is an active publication that covers a variety of topics in the field of solid-state physics. It was established in 1959, it is published monthly by MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica. The journal aims to share advanced research that enhances our understanding of solid materials and their physical properties including optics, acoustics, electronic and vibrational spectra, phase transitions, ferroelectricity, magnetism, and superconductivity. We assess the Tognetti-Cortona-Adamo (TCA) generalized gradient approximation correlation functional [J. Chem. Phys. 128:034101 (2008)] for a variety of electronic systems. We find that, even if the TCA functional is not exact for the uniform electron gas, it is very accurate for the jellium surface correlation energies and it gives a realistic description of the quantum oscillations and surface effects of various jellium clusters, that are important model systems in computational chemistry and solid-state physics. When the TCA correlation is combined with the non-empirical PBEint, Wu-Cohen, and PBEsol$_b$ exchange functionals, the resulting exchange-correlation approximations provide good performances for a broad palette of systems and properties, being reasonably accurate for thermochemistry and geometry of molecules, transition metal complexes, non-covalent interactions,equilibrium lattice constants, bulk moduli, and cohesive energies of solids.

Three research programs are reviewed. These programs are muon spin rotation, studies of annealing in gallium arsenide and Hall effect studies in semiconductors. The muon spin rotation work centers around the development of a facility at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of BNL. Studies of annealing in GaAs concerns itself with the measurement of depolarization in GaAs. The Hall effect studies of proton damaged semiconductors provide new information on the nature of defects and dislocations in GaAs.

The orbital and spin moment of the Ni2+ ion in NiO has been calculated at 0 K to be 0.54mB and 1.99 mB respectively. Such large orbital moment, more than 20% of the total moment of 2.53 mB, proves the need for the ''unquenching'' of the orbital moment in compounds containing 3d ions. It turns out that the spin-orbit coupling is indispensable for description of magnetic and electronic properties of 3d-ion compounds. These two findings, largely ignored at the nowadays in-fashion solid-state thories, call for an advanced solid-state physics theory.

The object of this work was to apply simple principles of solid state physics to the functional performance of various types of pyrotechnic mixtures. Some of these parameters are particle size, loading density/pressure, and thermal c conductivity. Emphasis has been placed upon the optical and electrical properties of the lead salt semiconductors and work on the compound SnTe. Surface transport studies of semiconductors were clarified by a reformulation of the Boltzmann equation. Magnetoelastic interactions constituted an important effort during the year. Acoustic investigations of SiO2 were continued with reference to the Si-O-Si bond that included the relationships between specific heat and temperature dependence of the elastic moduli of SiO2 glass. Laser mechanisms have been studied by the use of high speed photography. A new alloy, Nitinol, revealed many unusual properties. Certain device applications of solid state principles are reported.
