3DTIC ADA439609: A Policy Language For A Pervasive Computing Environment

By

In this paper we describe a policy language designed for pervasive computing applications that is based on deontic concepts and grounded in a semantic language. The pervasive computing environments under consideration are those in which people and devices are mobile and use various wireless networking technologies to discover and access services and devices in their vicinity. Such pervasive environments lend themselves to policy-based security due to their extremely dynamic nature. Using policies allows the security functionality to be modified without changing the implementation of the entities involved. However, along with being extremely dynamic these environments also tend to span several domains and be made up of entities of varied capabilities. A policy language for environments of this sort needs to be very expressive but lightweight and easily extensible. We demonstrate the feasibility of our policy language in pervasive environments through a prototype used as part of a secure pervasive system.

4DTIC ADA439639: Neighborhood-Consistent Transaction Management For Pervasive Computing Environments

By

This paper examines the problem of transaction management in pervasive computing environments and presents a new approach to address them. We represent each entity as a mobile or static semi-autonomous device. The purpose of each device is to satisfy user queries based on its local data repository and interactions with other devices currently in its vicinity. Pervasive environments, unlike traditional mobile computing paradigm, do not differentiate between clients and servers that are located in a fixed, wired infrastructure. Consequently, we model all devices as peers. These environments also relax other assumptions made by mobile computing paradigm, such as the possibility of reconnection with a given device, support from wired infrastructure, or the presence of a global schema. These fundamental characteristics of pervasive computing environments limit the use of techniques developed for transactions in a mobile computing environments. We define an alternative optimistic transaction model whose main emphasis is to provide a high rate of successful transaction terminations and to maintain a neighborhood-based consistency. The model accomplishes this via the help of active witnesses and by employing an epidemic voting protocol. The advantage of our model is that it enables two or more peers to engage in a reliable and consistent transaction while in a pervasive environment without assuming that they can talk to each other via infrastructure such as base stations. The advantage of using active witnesses and an epidemic voting protocol is that transaction termination does not depend on any single point of a failure. Additionally, the use of an epidemic voting protocol does not require all involved entities to be simultaneously connected at any time and, therefore, further overcomes the dynamic nature of the environments. We present the implementation of the model and results from simulations.

5DTIC ADA459215: Pervasive Computing: Why Did The Logistics Soldier Cross The Road?

By

Enterprise networks are becoming distributed. The central data center has given way to a distributed network environment containing distributed server clusters, edge servers that optimize data process and dissemination, and a new tier of network-enabled devices that provide ubiquitous access. In essence, the network is expanding outward and embracing a series of new processing nodes (e.g., PDAs, cell phones, vehicles, MP3 players, consumer appliances, etc.). These network nodes are called pervasive devices. The goal of pervasive computing (PvC) is to make data and application services available to any authorized user anywhere, anytime, and on any device. This is accomplished through a robust architecture including software abstraction both at the device level and at the back end. In part, abstraction is facilitated through the use of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). A JVM consists of interpreters and a run-time environment which can read java byte code. It enables the construction of machine and operating system (OS) independent applications and services because there are JVMs for most Operating Systems (OSs). This paper will go over pervasive technology in general, it will review potential considerations, a PvC architecture, and data mining of PvC information. Throughout this paper there are examples of how PvC can be used to impact the Department of Defense (DoD), however its uses are only limited by imagination.

7DTIC ADA511497: Networking For Pervasive Computing

By

Information technology is undergoing a paradigm shift from desktop computing, where isolated workstations connect to shared servers across a network, to pervasive computing, where myriad portable, embedded, and networked information appliances continuously reconfigure themselves individually and collectively to support the information requirements of mobile workers and work teams. This shift will not occur overnight, nor will it be achieved without solving a range of new technical and social problems. Still, this inexorable change should yield many economic opportunities for the global information technology industry, and for the increasing swath of businesses that depend on information. The potential value of pervasive computing motivated the NIST Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) to establish a five-year program of research to help the information technology industry identify and solve some looming technical roadblocks that seemed likely to slow development and acceptance of the new paradigm. The ITL Pervasive Computing program addressed three general areas: human-computer interaction, programming models, and networking. This special publication provides a compendium of technical papers published by NIST researchers who investigated networking for pervasive computing.

8DTIC ADA439512: Using OWL In A Pervasive Computing Broker

By

Computing is moving toward a pervasive context-aware environment in which agents with limited resources will require external support to help them become context-aware. In this paper, we describe an agent based architecture called Context Broker Architecture (CoBrA) to help these agents to acquire, reason about and share context knowledge. A key component in our architecture is an explicit context ontology defined using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). This ontology models the basic concepts of people, agents, places and presentation events. We also describe a use case scenario and prototype design of CoBrA in an intelligent meeting room environment.

12DTIC ADA460391: Toward Distributed Service Discovery In Pervasive Computing Environments

By

The paper proposes a novel distributed service discovery protocol for pervasive environments. The protocol is based on the concepts of peer-to-peer caching of service advertisements and group-based intelligent forwarding of service requests. It does not require a service to be registered with a registry or lookup server. Services are described using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). We exploit the semantic class/subClass hierarchy of OWL to describe service groups and use this semantic information to selectively forward service requests. OWL-based service description also enables increased flexibility in service matching. We present simulation results that show that our protocol achieves increased efficiency in discovering services (compared to traditional broadcast-based mechanisms) by efficiently utilizing bandwidth via controlled forwarding of service requests.

13DTIC ADA622394: Wearable Notification Via Dissemination Service In A Pervasive Computing Environment

By

This report describes an architecture of wearable sensors in the context of an Army tactical environment. The architecture is implemented in functional software that integrates the sensor data, performs predictions to determine contextual gesture information, and disseminates this information to other Soldiers and computing assets where the presentation is properly adapted. This prototype framework demonstrates the feasibility of how a heterogeneous pervasive computing environment can integrate context, state, and environment in a manner that would be transparent to a Soldier's common operations.

14Towards A Tool-based Development Methodology For Pervasive Computing Applications

By

Despite much progress, developing a pervasive computing application remains a challenge because of a lack of conceptual frameworks and supporting tools. This challenge involves coping with heterogeneous devices, overcoming the intricacies of distributed systems technologies, working out an architecture for the application, encoding it in a program, writing specific code to test the application, and finally deploying it. This paper presents a design language and a tool suite covering the development life-cycle of a pervasive computing application. The design language allows to define a taxonomy of area-specific building-blocks, abstracting over their heterogeneity. This language also includes a layer to define the architecture of an application, following an architectural pattern commonly used in the pervasive computing domain. Our underlying methodology assigns roles to the stakeholders, providing separation of concerns. Our tool suite includes a compiler that takes design artifacts written in our language as input and generates a programming framework that supports the subsequent development stages, namely implementation, testing, and deployment. Our methodology has been applied on a wide spectrum of areas. Based on these experiments, we assess our approach through three criteria: expressiveness, usability, and productivity.

18DTIC ADA439642: Towards Distributed Service Discovery In Pervasive Computing Environments

21Pervasive Brain Monitoring And Data Sharing Based On Multi-tier Distributed Computing And Linked Data Technology.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Human Neuroscience , volume 8 . Abstract EEG-based Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are facing basic challenges in real-world applications. The technical difficulties in developing truly wearable BCI systems that are capable of making reliable real-time prediction of users' cognitive states in dynamic real-life situations may seem almost insurmountable at times. Fortunately, recent advances in miniature sensors, wireless communication and distributed computing technologies offered promising ways to bridge these chasms. In this paper, we report an attempt to develop a pervasive on-line EEG-BCI system using state-of-art technologies including multi-tier Fog and Cloud Computing, semantic Linked Data search, and adaptive prediction/classification models. To verify our approach, we implement a pilot system by employing wireless dry-electrode EEG headsets and MEMS motion sensors as the front-end devices, Android mobile phones as the personal user interfaces, compact personal computers as the near-end Fog Servers and the computer clusters hosted by the Taiwan National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) as the far-end Cloud Servers. We succeeded in conducting synchronous multi-modal global data streaming in March and then running a multi-player on-line EEG-BCI game in September, 2013. We are currently working with the ARL Translational Neuroscience Branch to use our system in real-life personal stress monitoring and the UCSD Movement Disorder Center to conduct in-home Parkinson's disease patient monitoring experiments. We shall proceed to develop the necessary BCI ontology and introduce automatic semantic annotation and progressive model refinement capability to our system.

31DTIC ADA439479: On Data Management In Pervasive Computing Environments

By

This paper presents a framework to address new data management challenges introduced by data-intensive pervasive computing environments. These challenges include a spatio-temporal variation of data and data source availability lack of a global catalog and schema and no guarantee of reconnection among peers due to the serendipitous nature of the environment. An important aspect of our solution is to treat devices as semi-autonomous peers guided in their interactions by profiles and context. The profiles are grounded in a semantically rich language and represent information about users. devices and data described in terms of beliefs, desires, and intentions. We present a prototype implementation of this framework over combined Bluetooth and Ad-Hoc 802.11 networks. and present experimental and simulation results that validate our approach and measure system performance.

36Microsoft Research Video 104611: User Centric And Infrastructure Aspects Of Pervasive Computing

By

As an introduction, the known challenges of pervasive/ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) are rephrased following a categorization into five main areas, abbreviated as S.C.A.L.E. Next, the talk briefly introduces a reference architecture for UbiComp as a pragmatic way to organize UbiComp research. The emphasis is then put on two large issues addressed by the Telecooperation research group, and on the corresponding research projects: Personal carry-on devices with support for hands-free/eyes-free use, digital identity, device federation, and context awareness; research in this area comprises hardware/software prototypes called TalkingAssistants IR local positioning and IR smart tags & badges research the Stairs approach (structured audio retrieval) dynamically federated devices (some carried, some encountered on the move) BioStore, bio-analog visualization & learning/forgetting of mass (e.g., SenseCam) data The design and harmonization of mobile AdHoc, enterprise wide, and globally scalable UbiComp infrastructures, with two research foci: MundoCore, an event based SmallFootprint middleware for UbiComp with a programming model that harmonizes support for pub/sub, stateful (RPC) and streaming communication. MundoCore comes with distributed debugging support and 2D & 3D world models for (partly) visual programming and is the basis of all projects mentioned in the talk; MundoCore is also compatible with projects in the group about a widget-like approach to multimodal software development and a support system for context-sensitive service discovery/orchestration, aiming at a global free market (economy) of services iClouds, infrastructure and support for mobile AdHoc applications, in particular for community networks; iClouds features, e.g., AdPass, a secure coupon distribution scheme for spreading qualified Ads and collecting rebates in infrastructure-free communities, as an example for secure community services. 44Microsoft Research Video 104305: Off The Beaten Path In Pervasive Computing

By

Many of our current research projects at MERL are squarely in the pervasive-computing realm, such as: interactive multi-user tabletop displays, operator-identifying automotive controls, digital home networking, location-aware RFID tags, semi-passive RFID tags for sensor networks, novel physical and chemical sensors, speech-based information retrieval for mobile devices, and vision-based person/object tracking. But because the results of this work have been or will be presented in forums familiar to the ubiquitous-computing community, I won’t describe them in this talk. Instead, I hope to persuade you that the world of Pervasive Computing is bigger than it seems and that a broader perspective can lead to unexpected discoveries and opportunities. I will use a number of MERL projects to make my point. (This is a reprise of Joe’s keynote talk for Pervasive Computing 2006.) ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

46DTIC ADA440419: An Approach To Dynamic Service Management In Pervasive Computing Systems

By

In the near future, we will see dramatic changes in computing and networking hardware. A large number of devices (e.g., phones, PDAs, even small household appliances) will become computationally enabled. Micro/nano sensors will be widely embedded in most engineered artifacts, from the clothes we wear to the roads we drive on. All of these devices will be (wirelessly) networked using Bluetooth, IEEE 802.15 or IEEE 802.11 for short range connectivity creating pervasive environments. In this age, where a large number of wirelessly networked appliances and devices are becoming commonplace, there is a necessity for providing a standard interface to them that is easily accessible by any user. This paper outlines the design of Centaurus, an infrastructure for presenting services to heterogeneous mobile clients in a physical space via some short range wireless links. the infrastructure is communication medium independent; we have implemented the system over Bluetooth, CDPD and Infrared, three well-known wireless technologies. All the components in our model use a language based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) for communication, giving the system a uniform and easily adaptable interface. Centaurus defines a uniform infrastructure for heterogeneous services, both hardware and software, to be made available to diverse mobile users within a confined space.

47DTIC ADA458201: Pervasive Computing And Its Impact On Next Generation Military Systems

By

The former CEO of IBM, Louis Gerstner, once defined Pervasive Computing (PvC) as a billion people interacting with a million e-businesses with a trillion intelligent devices interconnected. This is the vision of pervasive computing; a web of interconnected and interoperable devices, information, services and people. Enabled by the advent of broadband wireless and wired networks, the increased power and commodification of information technology (IT) components, and the emergence of a new class of software called middleware, technology companies around the world are spending trillions of dollars a year to make this vision of PvC a reality. This paper examines PvC, or, as it is sometime called ubiquitous computing, within the context of the greater IT-based convergence phenomenon. It also reveals how the technologies and solutions supporting this new compute paradigm will soon impact our next generation military systems.

50Java/Jini Technologies And High-performance Pervasive Computing : 30 July And 1 August 2002, Boston, USA
