This report presents the results of a study whose objective was to develop first-principles-based models of hole size and maximum tip-to-tip crack length for a spacecraft module pressure wall that has been perforated in an orbital debris particle impact. The hole size and crack length models are developed by sequentially characterizing the phenomena comprising the orbital debris impact event, including the initial impact, the creation and motion of a debris cloud within the dual-wall system, the impact of the debris cloud on the pressure wall, the deformation of the pressure wall due to debris cloud impact loading prior to crack formation, pressure wall crack initiation, propagation, and arrest, and finally pressure wall deformation following crack initiation and growth. The model development has been accomplished through the application of elementary shock physics and thermodynamic theory, as well as the principles of mass, momentum, and energy conservation. The predictions of the model developed herein are compared against the predictions of empirically-based equations for hole diameters and maximum tip-to-tip crack length for three International Space Station wall configurations. The ISS wall systems considered are the baseline U.S. Lab Cylinder, the enhanced U.S. Lab Cylinder, and the U.S. Lab Endcone. The empirical predictor equations were derived from experimentally obtained hole diameters and crack length data. The original model predictions did not compare favorably with the experimental data, especially for cases in which pressure wall petalling did not occur. Several modifications were made to the original model to bring its predictions closer in line with the experimental results. Following the adjustment of several empirical constants, the predictions of the modified analytical model were in much closer agreement with the experimental results.

The United States Training and Employment Service General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB), first published in 1947, has been included in a continuing program of research to validate the tests against success in many different occupations. The GATB consists of 12 tests which measure nine aptitudes: General Learning Ability; Verbal Aptitude; Numerical Aptitude; Spatial Aptitude; Form Perception; Clerical Perception; Motor Coordination; Finger Dexterity; and Manual Dexterity. The aptitude scores are standard scores with 100 as the average for the general working population, and a standard deviation of 20. Occupational norms are established in terms of minimum qualifying scores for each of the significant aptitude measures which, when combined, predict job performance. Cutting scores are set only for those aptitudes which aid in predicting the performance of the job duties of the experimental sample. The GATB norms described are appropriate only for jobs with content similar to that shown in the job description presented in this report. A description of the validation sample is included. (AG)

This study examines the ability of the CTH hydrocode to predict the effect of rod nose shape on the transition from rigid body to eroding rod penetration for tungsten alloy long rod penetrators perforating finite aluminum targets. Two rod nose shapes and two target alloys were considered. The rod nose shapes were hemispherical and ogival, and the target alloys were 7.62 cm thick 5083 and 7039 aluminum. Results are compared to an experimental study that delineated the effect of nose shape on the threshold velocity at which tungsten alloy penetrators transition from rigid body to eroding rod when perforating finite aluminum targets.

This article is from Indian Journal of Dermatology , volume 58 . Abstract A 4 year old boy presented with history of itchy raised lesions on body of 2 years duration. Though parental consanguinity was not present, his elder brother had similar complaints. Dermatological examination revealed multiple hyperpigmented papules with a central keratotic plug distributed mainly over face and extensors of upper and lower extremities. Koebnerisation was present. Skin biopsy revealed perforating collagen bundles in the upper dermis and epidermis which was confirmed by Van Gieson staining. Patient was being treated with topical retinoids and intralesional corticosteroids with minimal relief.

Abstract Background: Acquired perforating dermatosis (APD) is histopathologically characterized by transepidermal elimination of materials from the upper dermis. APD can be divided into four diseases: Kyrle's disease, perforating folliculitis, elastosis perforans serpiginosa, and reactive perforating collagenosis. APD is usually associated with systemic diseases, especially diabetes mellitus or chronic renal failure. So far, there have only been a few Korean studies of APD, which have a limited number of patients. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of 30 cases of APD and to examine the association with systemic diseases. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and biopsy specimens of 30 patients who were diagnosed with APD. Results: The mean age was 55.5 years, and the average duration of the lesion was 7.8 months. The lower extremities (73.3%) were the most frequently occurring sites of the lesion. Twenty-five patients (83.3%) had pruritus, and Koebner's phenomenon was present in 11 patients. Patients of 63.3% had at least one systemic disease. Diabetes mellitus (n=17, 56.7%) and chronic renal failure (n=10, 33.3%) were the most commonly associated conditions. Most patients received topical steroids (93.3%) and antihistamines (80.0%). The most common histopathologic type was reactive perforating collagenosis (n=23, 73.3%). Conclusion: In this study, most patients had a systemic association to the diseases. Therefore, we suggest that further evaluation is necessary for patients who present with APD. This includes reviewing patient's comprehensive past medical history, clinical exam, and additional diagnostic testing to check for the possibility of associated systemic diseases.

Finite element analysis of the transient response of thin-walled structures subjected to impact loadings becomes more complicated when a lack of axisymmetry requires a three-dimensional treatment. In such cases careful modeling is needed to provide sufficient solution accuracy while at the same time keeping computer costs down. In this report the analysis of one such structure, a cylindrical steel canister with a large circular hole in its side, is described. The problem of the canister perforating a steel plate from either normal or oblique angles is considered. SAP IV, a general purpose linear elastic structural analysis code was used. Both static and dynamic analyses were conducted. This problem was solved as a demonstration of analysis capabilities in this area. The stress and deformation results obtained are interpreted in terms of one-dimensional theory. An assessment is made of the weakening effects of the hole and of the effectiveness of a reinforcing ring and cover plate in reducing these effects. In the course of this analysis, some shortcomings were found in the model used. These are described and suggestions for improvements and further work are given. (Author)
