Biodiversity—the sum of all biological variations—is decreasing at an alarming rate. This causes increasing risks to the climate, human health, and welfare. As a major driver of biodiversity loss, food consumption accounts for more than 40% of global species loss. Lifecycle assessment (LCA) simulations have estimated that diet changes could prevent up to 88% of food-related biodiversity loss, emphasizing the urgent need to foster biodiversity-conserving diet changes. Interestingly, biodiversity has been historically neglected as a sustainability dimension in the food domain. In this study, we explore how accurately people perceive foods’ biodiversity footprints, whether biodiversity footprint labels can improve this perception, and whether food-related motives and knowledge influence misperceptions of biodiversity footprints or the effect of biodiversity footprint labels.

Sudden financial losses in later life, like falling victim to fraud or scam, have been linked to serious adverse physical and mental health outcomes (e.g., higher rates of hospitalization, mortality, anxiety, and depression), and has recently been identified as a precursor to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s related dementia. Susceptibility to fraud increases in older age, which may be due to older adults being too trusting and having difficulty learning to trust. An important question that remains largely unexplored is who do older adults trust and how do they decide who to trust? Previous work has used tasks that require older adults to trust or distrust young adult economic partners. Yet, it is less clear whether older adults trust individuals of varying ages equally, or if trust behavior may be dependent on the age of the partner. Because similarity contributes to feelings of trust, older adults have been hypothesized to display an own-age bias—that is, an increased likelihood of thinking their peers of a similar age are more trustworthy than those in younger age groups. The goal of this proposal is to investigate the role of economic partner age as it contributes to older adults’ perceptions of trust (Aim 1a) and initial trust behavior (Aim 1b). Aim 1. Determine the extent to which older adults show an own-age bias in trustworthiness judgments and initial trust behavior. Aim 1a. We will compare older adults’ (N = 80; ages 65-85) ratings of trustworthiness for young, middle-aged, and older adult faces. If older adults show an own-age bias in trustworthiness judgments, We hypothesize that older adults will rate the older adult faces as being more trustworthy compared to young adult and middle-aged adult faces. Aim 1b. Using an economic trust game in the same older adult sample, We will compare initial trust behavior—that is, the amount shared in the first trial with each new economic partner—between young, middle-aged, and older adult partners. If older adults show an own-age bias, We hypothesize that older adults will initially share more money with older, compared to younger and middle-aged adult, partners.

Two experiments were performed with experienced sonar technician listeners in an effort to identify perceptual dimensions underlying the classification of aurally presented sonar signals. It was found that: (1) where common sets of sonar signals are used as stimuli, the group perceptual space of naive and experienced sonar listeners is highly similar; (2) experienced sonar listeners attach different salience or importance to particular dimensions than do naive listeners; (3) the number of dimensions in the group perceptual space is a function of the representativeness of the signal set; (4) most sonar signals are quite complex perceptually, and project on several dimensions; (5) very strong projections on some of the experimentally identified dimensions are associated with a high degree of classification success, but signals that lack strong projections on any dimension are often erroneously classified; (6) experienced sonar listeners classify signals in accord with how strongly the signals resemble certain target class stereotypes; this may or may not result in successful classification of particular examples.

Perception 3.1 from Edu Ware

This study investigates how verbal empathic behavior expressed by a robot influences user perceptions in human–robot interaction and examines the psychological mechanisms underlying these effects. While robots do not genuinely experience empathy, users may still interpret empathic behavior as meaningful by engaging in anthropomorphism—the attribution of human-like traits such as emotion and intention to non-human agents (Epley et al., 2007; Fink 2012). Prior research often shows indeed that empathic robots are evaluated positively (Anzabi et al., 2023; Brave et al., 2005; Fan et al., 2017; Leite et al., 2013). However, many studies rely on broad or inconsistent definitions of empathy. In contrast, studies applying theory-based definitions—incorporating both cognitive (perspective-taking) and affective (emotional resonance) components—have yielded mixed results (Weck & Krämer, in preparation; Weck & Krämer, manuscript submitted for publication). Weck and Krämer (manuscript submitted for publication) found that empathic behavior enhances positive evaluations, whereas a separate study by the same authors (in preparation) suggests it may decrease likeability. These inconsistencies highlight the need to better understand not only how users interpret empathic behavior, but also the psychological processes that shape those interpretations. In the present study, participants will watch one of two scripted videos depicting a humanoid robot (Nao) interacting with a student in an academic stress context. In the empathy condition, the robot expresses verbal responses reflecting both cognitive and affective empathy; in the control condition, the robot offers neutral, task-oriented support. The study tests whether empathic behavior increases likeability, warmth, and competence, and reduces discomfort. It also examines the psychological factors that influence these effects: specifically, whether outcomes are shaped by perceived empathy, and whether they depend on the degree of perceived anthropomorphism.

The factors that harm the speech recognition results for un-tethered users are the ambient noise and the reverberation. While we have pretty sophisticated noise suppression algorithms, the de-reverberation is still an unsolved problem due to the difficulties in estimation and keeping track of the changes in the room response model. Sound capturing with microphone arrays provides partial de-reverberation and ambient noise reduction due to the better directivity. This improves the speech recognition results, but still WER is higher than with a close-talk microphone. This talk will present the results from the summer internship of Daniel Allred in MSR and is a follow-up to research done last summer. A full implementation of the dereverberation suppression algorithm designed last summer has been tested on actual room environments. We will present the possible improvements that can be achieved using our algorithm with proper parameter estimation. We also performed some preliminary studies into the human perception of various reverberation conditions and the use of our algorithm to alleviate those conditions. Results of comparative MOS tests will be shown, and an evaluation of what these results mean for future research in dereverberation algorithms for real-time communications channels will follow. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. This study aims to assess the role of distinctiveness in facial trustworthiness ratings and examine differences between Chinese and White participants in evaluating the trustworthiness of faces from different ethnic groups. The main analysis will replicate the work of Leger et al. (2023), who examined how shape prototypicality and sexual dimorphism influence trustworthiness ratings (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-42990-6).

The purpose of the current study is to investigate perceptions of traveled distances in virtual reality. Perceptions of traveled distances in VR are commonly misestimated, meaning people feel like they have traveled a different distance than the actual distance. Two methods of estimating perceived traveled distances will be explored. We expect to extend previous work, but also explore how different methods and velocities influence traveled distance estimations. We will also examine how traveled distance estimations are influenced by periods of calibration with corrective feedback (do people improve), changes in velocities (will they get worse when velocity changes), and aspects of calibration retention (when they return to a previously calibrated velocity, if calibration occurs, will their accuracy remain consistent with their last experience).

We aim to develop the CATCH-IT Community intervention, and evaluate it relative to CATCH-IT only in a cluster randomized trial, to (1) decrease depressive outcomes among adolescents (aged 12-14) with depressive symptoms by expanding their individual Perception Boxes, and (2) strengthen the school community by expanding the Perception Boxes of their classmates and educators. (b) Background: Governmental agencies recommend school-based depression prevention interventions, suggesting better treatment adherence/outcomes when mental health services are delivered within students’ school environments. Yet we lack examples of successful school-based preventive strategies. CATCH-IT is an online depression prevention intervention that reduces depression risk in adolescents with elevated depression symptoms. (c) Justification: School-based preventions are needed to support adolescents where they spend most of their time. CATCH-IT, when deployed in schools, may prevent the onset of depression in symptomatic adolescents by expanding their Perception Boxes. CATCH-IT Community will reinforce the CATCH-IT intervention’s effects by encouraging growth in the Perception Boxes of the entire school community. (d) Novelty: Adolescents are influenced by peers and teachers, but, to date, preventive approaches targeting adolescent depression have focused on the individual, without considering the school environment. We are not aware of depression preventions that simultaneously address symptomatic adolescents’ skill development and the perceptions of classmates and educators within their schools. (e) Hypotheses: We hypothesize that, at 6-month followup, compared to symptomatic adolescents in CATCH-IT only, those in CATCH-IT Community will demonstrate (1) a steeper slope of improved depressive symptoms and fewer depressed days; and (2) more changes in their Perception Boxes (increased goal-directed activities, healthier cognitive styles, better social skills). We further hypothesize that, (3) compared to those within CATCH-IT only classrooms, symptomatic adolescents, nonsymptomatic classmates, and teachers within CATCH-IT Community classrooms will demonstrate more changes in their Perception Boxes (increased knowledge about depression, reduced stigma, more positive classroom perceptions, and warmer teacher/student relationships). (f) Activities: Seventh grade classrooms will be assigned randomly to CATCH-IT only or CATCH-IT Community. An existing universal mental health screening program will identify students with depressive symptoms as the primary intervention targets. CATCH-IT only classrooms will offer individual level intervention only. Only students with elevated depressive symptoms will access the CATCH-IT intervention (Figure 1). CATCH-IT Community classrooms will offer individual and classroom level interventions. Individual level: students with elevated depressive symptoms and their classmates will access CATCH-IT online. Classroom level: teachers will learn to increase mental health literacy, decrease mental health stigma/bias, and improve the classroom warmth through workshops. (g) Outputs: Decreased depressive symptoms in all adolescents reporting elevated depressive symptoms, with a more significant decrease among adolescents in CATCH-IT Community Expanded Perception Boxes among symptomatic adolescents, classmates and educators in CATCH-IT Community (h) Impact: If CATCH-IT Community enhances the preventive effects of CATCH-IT only, we will be positioned to implement this program as part of our school-based mental health screening program, impacting thousands of adolescents annually. This approach has the potential to be replicated to expand the Perception Boxes of entire school communities, ultimately addressing the crisis in youth mental health.

One experiment examined differential color brightnesses as body orientation cues; the other involved a large survey of photographs and paintings that might enhance the interior aesthetics of the proposed International Space Station. Ninety male and female college students reclining on their backs in the dark were disoriented by a rotating platform and inserted under a slowly rotating disk that filled their entire visual field. The entire disk was painted the same color but one half had a brightness value that was about 69 percent higher than the other. The effects of red, blue, and yellow were examined. Subjects wearing frosted goggles opened their eyes to view the rotating, illuminated disk, which was stopped when they felt that they were right-side up. For all three colors, significant numbers of subjects said they felt right-side up when the brighter side of the disk filled their upper visual field. These results suggest that color brightness could provide Space Station crew members with body orientation cues as they move about. It was found that subjects preferred photographs and paintings with the greatest depths of field, irrespective of picture topic.
