1Instabilities Of Hexagonal Patterns With Broken Chiral Symmetry
By Blas Echebarria and Hermann Riecke
Three coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for hexagonal patterns with broken chiral symmetry are investigated. They are relevant for the dynamics close to onset of rotating non-Boussinesq or surface-tension-driven convection. Steady and oscillatory, long- and short-wave instabilities of the hexagons are found. For the long-wave behavior coupled phase equations are derived. Numerical simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau equations indicate bistability between spatio-temporally chaotic patterns and stable steady hexagons. The chaotic state can, however, not be described properly with the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

3Conformal Complex Scalar Singlet Extensions Of The Standard Model: Symmetry Breaking Patterns And Phenomenology
By Zhi-Wei Wang, Frederick S. Sage, T. G. Steele, R. B. Mann and T. Hanif
We consider a conformal complex singlet extension of the Standard Model with a Higgs portal interaction. Two different scenarios depending on whether the global U(1) symmetry is broken or not have been studied. In the unbroken phase, the decay of the complex singlet is protected by the global U(1) symmetry which leads to an ideal cold dark matter candidate. In the broken phase, we are able to provide a second Higgs at $554\,\rm{GeV}$. In addition, gauging the global U(1) symmetry, we can construct an asymptotically safe U(1)' leptophobic model. We combine the notion of asymptotic safety with conformal symmetry and use the renormalization group equations as a bridge to connect UV boundary conditions and Electroweak/ TeV scale physics. We also provide a detailed example to show that these boundary conditions will lead to phenomenological signatures such as diboson excesses which could be tested at the LHC.

4Patterns Of Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking
By Ning Chen, Thomas A. Ryttov and Robert Shrock
We construct and analyze theories with a gauge symmetry in the ultraviolet of the form $G \otimes G_b$, in which the vectorial, asymptotically free $G_b$ gauge interaction becomes strongly coupled at a scale where the $G$ interaction is weakly coupled and produces bilinear fermion condensates that dynamically break the $G$ symmetry. Comparisons are given between Higgs and dynamical symmetry breaking mechanisms for various models.

5Weakly Nonlinear Theory Of Grain Boundary Motion In Patterns With Crystalline Symmetry
By Denis Boyer and Jorge Vinals
We study the motion of a grain boundary separating two otherwise stationary domains of hexagonal symmetry. Starting from an order parameter equation appropriate for hexagonal patterns, a multiple scale analysis leads to an analytical equation of motion for the boundary that shares many properties with that of a crystalline solid. We find that defect motion is generically opposed by a pinning force that arises from non-adiabatic corrections to the standard amplitude equation. The magnitude of this force depends sharply on the mis-orientation angle between adjacent domains so that the most easily pinned grain boundaries are those with an angle between four and eight degrees. Although pinning effects may be small, they do not vanish asymptotically near the onset of this subcritical bifurcation, and can be orders of magnitude larger than those present in smectic phases that bifurcate supercritically.

6Spectra Of Massive QCD Dirac Operators From Random Matrix Theory: All Three Chiral Symmetry Breaking Patterns
By G. Akemann and E. Kanzieper
The microscopic spectral eigenvalue correlations of QCD Dirac operators in the presence of dynamical fermions are calculated within the framework of Random Matrix Theory (RMT). Our approach treats the low--energy correlation functions of all three chiral symmetry breaking patterns (labeled by the Dyson index $\beta=1,2$ and 4) on the same footing, offering a unifying description of massive QCD Dirac spectra. RMT universality is explicitly proven for all three symmetry classes and the results are compared to the available lattice data for $\beta=4$.

8Symmetry Breaking Of Vortex Patterns In A Rotating Harmonic Potential
By H. Sakaguchi and H. Takeshita
We numerically study the symmetry breaking instabilities of vortex patterns in a rotating harmonic potential using a type of Ginzburg-Landau equation. The configurations of vortex lattices change markedly by the symmetry-breaking instabilities, and then, some vortices move away from the confinement potential, which leads to the annihilation of vortices. The symmetry-breaking instabilities and the instabilities of vortex nucleation determine the parameter region of stable vortex patterns. We verify that the symmetry-breaking instabilities also occur in a type of complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

9Characterizing Symmetry Breaking Patterns In A Lattice By Dual Vortex Degree Of Freedoms
By Yan Chen and Jinwu Ye
A duality transformation in quantum field theory is usually established first through partition functions. It is always important to explore the dual relations between various correlation functions in the transformation. Here, we explore such a dual relation to study quantum phases and phase transitions in an extended boson Hubbard model at 1/3 (2/3) filling on a triangular lattice. We develop systematically a simple and effective way to use the vortex degree of freedoms on dual lattices to characterize both the density wave and valence bond symmetry breaking patterns of the boson insulating states in the direct lattices. In addition to a checkerboard charge density wave (X-CDW) and a stripe CDW, we find a novel CDW-VBS phase which has both local CDW and local valence bond solid (VBS) orders. Implications on QMC simulations are addressed. The possible experimental realizations of cold atoms loaded on optical lattices are discussed.

10Patterns Of Symmetry Breaking In QCD At High Baryon Density
By Thomas Schaefer
We study the structure of QCD at very large baryon density for an arbitrary number of flavors $N_f$. We provide evidence that for any number of flavors larger than $N_f=2$ chiral symmetry remains broken at asymptotically large chemical potential. For $N_c=N_f=3$, chiral symmetry breaking follows the standard pattern $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R\to SU(3)$, but for $N_f>3$ unusual patterns emerge. We study the case $N_f=3$ in more detail and calculate the magnitude of the chiral order parameters $ $ and $ $ in perturbative QCD. We show that, asymptotically, $ ^{1/3}$ is much smaller than $ ^{1/6}$. The result can be understood in terms of an approximate discrete symmetry.

11Patterns Of Chiral Symmetry Breaking And A Candidate For A C-theorem In Four Dimensions
By Jesper Levinsen
We test a candidate for a four-dimensional C-function. This is done by considering all asymptotically free, vectorlike gauge theories with N_f flavors and fermions in arbitrary representations of any simple Lie group. Assuming spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in the infrared limit and that the value of the C-function in this limit is determined by the number of Goldstone bosons, we find that only in the case of a theory with two colors and fermions in one single pseudo-real representation of SU(2) the C-theorem seems to be violated. Conversely, this might also be a sign of new constraints, restricting the number of flavors consistent with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. For all other groups and representations we find that this candidate C-function decreases along the renormalization group flow.

12Patterns Of Broken Chiral Symmetry In Quantum Chromodynamics
By R. Acharya and P. Narayana Swamy
We establish that in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at zero temperature, SU_(L+R)(N_F) exhibits the vector mode conjectured by Georgi and SU_(L-R)(N_F)is realized in either the Nambu-Goldstone mode or else the axial-vector charge is also screened from view at infinity. The Wigner-Weyl mode is ruled out unless the beta function in QCD develops an infrared stable zero.

13Flavour Blindness And Patterns Of Flavour Symmetry Breaking In Lattice Simulations Of Up, Down And Strange Quarks
By W. Bietenholz, V. Bornyakov, M. Göckeler, R. Horsley, W. G. Lockhart, Y. Nakamura, H. Perlt, D. Pleiter, P. E. L. Rakow, G. Schierholz, A. Schiller, T. Streuer, H. Stüben, F. Winter and J. M. Zanotti
QCD lattice simulations with 2+1 flavours (when two quark flavours are mass degenerate) typically start at rather large up-down and strange quark masses and extrapolate first the strange quark mass and then the up-down quark mass to its respective physical value. Here we discuss an alternative method of tuning the quark masses, in which the singlet quark mass is kept fixed. Using group theory the possible quark mass polynomials for a Taylor expansion about the flavour symmetric line are found, first for the general 1+1+1 flavour case and then for the 2+1 flavour case. This ensures that the kaon always has mass less than the physical kaon mass. This method of tuning quark masses then enables highly constrained polynomial fits to be used in the extrapolation of hadron masses to their physical values. Numerical results for the 2+1 flavour case confirm the usefulness of this expansion and an extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives hadron mass values to within a few percent of their experimental values. Singlet quantities remain constant which allows the lattice spacing to be determined from hadron masses (without necessarily being at the physical point). Furthermore an extension of this programme to include partially quenched results is given.

14A Symmetry-induced Model Of Elliptical Galaxy Patterns
By Jin He
S\'ersic (1968) generalized the de Vaucouleurs law which follows the projected (observed) one dimensional radial profile of elliptical galaxies closely and Dehnen (1993) proposed an analytical formula of the 3-dimensional light distributions whose projected line profile resembles the de Vaucouleurs law. This paper is involved to recover the Dehnen model and generalize the model to account for galaxy elliptical shapes by means of curvilinear coordinate systems and employing a symmetry principle. The symmetry principle maps an orthogonal coordinate system to a light distribution pattern. The coordinate system for elliptical galaxy patterns turns out to be the one which is formed by the complex-plane reciprocal transformation $Z=1/W$. The resulting spatial (3-dimensional) light distribution is spherically symmetric and has infinite gradient at its centre, which is called spherical-nucleus solution and is used to model galaxy central area. We can make changes of the coordinate system by cutting out some column areas of its definition domain, the areas containing the galaxy centre. The resulting spatial (3-dimensional) light distributions are axisymmetric or triaxial and have zero gradient at the centre, which are called elliptical-shape solutions and are used to model global elliptical patterns. The two types of logarithmic light distributions are added together to model full elliptical galaxy patterns. The model is a generalization of the Dehnen model. One of the elliptical-shape solutions permits realistic numerical calculation and is fitted to all R-band elliptical images from the Frei {\it et al.}(1996)'s galaxy sample. The fitting is satisfactory. This suggests that elliptical galaxy patterns can be represented in terms of a few basic parameters.

15Patterns Of Lorentz Symmetry Breaking In QED By CPT-odd Interaction
By A. A. Andrianov and R. Soldati
A tiny Lorentz symmetry breaking can be mediated in Electrodynamics by means of the Chern-Simons (CS) interaction polarized along a constant CS vector. Its presence makes the vacuum optically active that has been recently estimated from astrophysical data. We examine two possibilities for the CS vector to be time-like or space-like, under the assumption that it originates from v.e.v. of some pseudoscalar matter. It is shown that: a) a time-like CS vector makes the vacuum unstable under pairs creation of tachyonic photon modes with the finite vacuum decay rate, i.e. it is unlikely realized at macroscopic time scales; b) on the contrary, the space-like CS vector does not yield any tachyonic modes and, moreover, if its dynamical counterpart is substantially described by a scale invariant interaction, then the QED radiation effects induce the dynamical breaking of Lorentz symmetry, i.e. the occurrence of space-like CS vector appears to be rather natural.

16Patterns Of Spontaneous Chiral Symmetry Breaking In Vectorlike Gauge Theories
By P. H. Damgaard, U. M. Heller, R. Niclasen and B. Svetitsky
It has been conjectured that spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strongly coupled vectorlike gauge theories falls into only three different classes, depending on the gauge group and the representations carried by the fermions. We test this proposal by studying SU(2), SU(3) and SU(4) lattice gauge theories with staggered fermions in different irreducible representations. Staggered fermions away from the continuum limit should, for all complex representations, still belong to the continuum class of spontaneous symmetry breaking. But for all real and pseudo-real representations we show that staggered fermions should belong to incorrect symmetry breaking classes away from the continuum, thus generalizing previous results. As an unambiguous signal for whether chiral symmetry breaks, and which breaking pattern it follows, we look at the smallest Dirac eigenvalue distributions. We find that the patterns of symmetry breaking are precisely those conjectured.

17Generating The Texture Of Symmetric Fermion Mass Matrices And Anomalous Hierarchy Patterns For The Neutrinos From An Extra Abelian Symmetry
By E. Papageorgiu
Assuming that a horizontal abelian (gauge) symmetry is at the origin of texture zeros in the fermion mass matrices we show how realistic mass patterns can be generated stepwise with a small number of effective operators from GUT's and string theory. It is interesting to note that, in the minimal scenario, if the up quark and the down quark mass matrices are generated simultaneously their texture is formaquivalent and contains only two zeros. Textures with more zeros (and thus more predictability) emerge if the up and down sectors are generated stepwise. This last possibility leads to rather anomalous neutrino patterns with mass degenerate neutrinos and large $\nu_{\mu} - \nu_{\tau}$ or $\nu_e - \nu_{\tau}$ mixing even in the absence of hierarchy in $M_R$, the mass matrix of the righthanded neutrinos, and as required by the LSND results if they were to be confirmed by future experiments. In contrast if the quark mass matrices have two zero entries (or less) the neutrino mass-mixing spectrum is independent of the texture structure of $M_R$ -if the latter does not contain any hierarchy of scales- and obeys the quadratic seesaw.

18Symmetry Breaking Patterns Of The 3-3-1 Model At Finite Temperature
By J. Sá Borges and Rudnei O. Ramos
We consider the minimal version of an extension of the standard electroweak model based on the $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_L \times U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry (the 3-3-1 model). We analyze the most general potential constructed from three scalars in the triplet representation of $SU(3)_L$, whose neutral components develop nonzero vacuum expectation values, giving mass for all the model's massive particles. {}For different choices of parameters, we obtain the particle spectrum for the two symmetry breaking scales: one where the $SU(3)_L \times U(1)_X$ group is broken down to $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ and a lower scale similar to the standard model one. Within the considerations used, we show that the model encodes two first-order phase transitions, respecting the pattern of symmetry restoration. The last transition, corresponding to the standard electroweak one, is found to be very weak first-order, most likely turning second-order or a crossover in practice. However, the first transition in this model can be strongly first-order, which might happen at a temperature not too high above the second one. We determine the respective critical temperatures for symmetry restoration for the model.

20Symmetry Breaking Patterns And Collective Modes Of Spin-one Color Superconductors
By Tomas Brauner, Jin-yi Pang and Qun Wang
Spin-one color superconductor is a viable candidate phase of dense matter in the interiors of compact stars. Its low-energy excitations will influence the transport properties of such matter and thus have impact on late-stage evolution of neutron stars. It also provides a good example of spontaneous symmetry breaking with rich breaking patterns. In this contribution, we reanalyze the phase diagram of a spin-one color superconductor and point out that a part of it is occupied by noninert states, which have been neglected in literature so far. We classify the collective Nambu--Goldstone modes, which are essential to the transport phenomena.

21Broken S_3 Flavor Symmetry Of Leptons And Quarks: Mass Spectra And Flavor Mixing Patterns
By Zhi-zhong Xing, Deshan Yang and Shun Zhou
We apply the discrete S_3 flavor symmetry to both lepton and quark sectors of the standard model extended by introducing one Higgs triplet and realizing the type-II seesaw mechanism for finite neutrino masses. The resultant mass matrices of charged leptons (M_l), neutrinos (M_nu), up-type quarks (M_u) and down-type quarks (M_d) have a universal form consisting of two terms: one is proportional to the identity matrix I and the other is proportional to the democracy matrix D. We argue that the textures of M_l, M_u and M_d are dominated by the D term, while that of M_nu is dominated by the I term. This hypothesis implies a near mass degeneracy of three neutrinos and can naturally explain why the mass matrices of charged fermions are strongly hierarchical, why the quark mixing matrix is close to I and why the lepton mixing matrix contains two large angles. We discuss a rather simple perturbation ansatz to break the S_3 symmetry and obtain more realistic mass spectra of leptons and quarks as well as their flavor mixing patterns. We stress that the I term, which used to be ignored from M_l, M_u and M_d, is actually important because it can significantly modify the smallest lepton flavor mixing angle theta_13 or three quark flavor mixing angles.

23Chiral Symmetry Patterns Of Excited Mesons With The Coulomb-like Linear Confinement
By R. F. Wagenbrunn and L. Ya. Glozman
The spectrum of $\bar q q$ mesons in a model where the only interaction is a linear Coulomb-like instantaneous confining potential is studied. The single-quark Green function as well as the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking are obtained from the Schwinger-Dyson (gap) equation. Given the dressed quark propagator, a complete spectrum of "usual" mesons is obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The spectrum exhibits restoration of chiral and $U(1)_A$ symmetries at large spins and/or radial excitations. This property is demonstrated both analytically and numerically. At large spins and/or radial excitations higher degree of degeneracy is observed, namely all states with the given spin fall into reducible representations $[(0,1/2) \oplus (1/2,0)] \times [(0,1/2) \oplus (1/2,0)]$ that combine all possible chiral multiplets with the given $J$ and $n$. The structure of the meson wave functions as well as the form of the angular and radial Regge trajectories are investigated.

24The Spectral Density Of The QCD Dirac Operator And Patterns Of Chiral Symmetry Breaking
By D. Toublan and J. J. M. Verbaarschot
We study the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator for two colors with fermions in the fundamental representation and for two or more colors with adjoint fermions. For $N_f$ flavors, the chiral flavor symmetry of these theories is spontaneously broken according to $SU(2N_f)\to Sp(2N_f)$ and $SU(N_f)\to O(N_f)$, respectively, rather than the symmetry breaking pattern $SU(N_f) \times SU(N_f) \to SU(N_f)$ for QCD with three or more colors and fundamental fermions. In this paper we study the Dirac spectrum for the first two symmetry breaking patterns. Following previous work for the third case we find the Dirac spectrum in the domain $\lambda \ll \Lambda_{\rm QCD}$ by means of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. In particular, this result allows us to calculate the slope of the Dirac spectrum at $\lambda = 0$. We also show that for $\lambda \ll 1/L^2 \Lambda_{QCD}$ (with $L$ the linear size of the system) the Dirac spectrum is given by a chiral Random Matrix Theory with the symmetries of the Dirac operator.

25Patterns Of Spontaneous Chiral Symmetry Breaking In The Large-Nc Limit Of QCD-Like Theories
By M. Knecht and E. de Rafael
It is shown that in vector-like gauge theories, such as QCD, and in the limit of a large number of colours Nc, the ordering pattern of narrow vector and axial-vector states at low energies is correlated with the size of the possible local order parameters of chiral symmetry breaking. This has implications on the underlying dynamics of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, and also on possible values of the parameter S for oblique electroweak corrections, the analogue of the QCD low energy constant L10.
