5Microsoft Research Audio 104568: You Can (almost) Have It Both! Low Distortion Texture Mapping With Circle Patterns

By

Creating a map from an arbitrary surface to a flat domain is the age old problem of cartography. In computer graphics applications this problem is often presented as the quest for low distortion mappings from triangle meshes to a flat domain. In my talk I will present a new approach to the construction of such mappings based on circle patterns. Here the triangle mesh is treated as a collection of circumcircles (one to each triangle) with intersection angles (one to each edge). This description admits a mathematically very clean formulation of the notion of discrete conformality with the desired mapping being the unique solution to a convex energy minimization in the unknown circle radii. Little more than a black box minimization software is required to implement this approach. The resulting mappings are of excellent quality in terms of angle distortion. But, as one would expect, they suffer from at times high area distortion. To ameliorate this shortcoming, as well as deal with arbitrary topology surfaces (without cutting them first!), we employ cone singularities. The mathematical theory of circle patterns accommodates these with no changes. The final result are global (seamless) discrete conformal texture maps from arbitrary topology surfaces with low area distortion. Joint work with Liliya Kharevych and Boris Springborn. 6Traditional East Asian Medicine Syndrome Differentiation Patterns For Sarcopenia In Older Adults: A Systematic Review

By

This research project aims to systematically review and synthesize existing literature on Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) syndrome differentiation patterns applied to sarcopenia in older adults. Sarcopenia, characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is a growing public health concern among aging populations worldwide. While Western medicine provides diagnostic criteria and interventions, TEAM offers a unique, individualized approach based on pattern identification (syndrome differentiation), which could complement current understanding and treatment of sarcopenia. The primary objective of this systematic review is to identify and categorize the common syndrome patterns used in TEAM to diagnose or manage sarcopenia. We will explore which zang-fu organs, qi-blood-fluid imbalances, or pathogenic factors are most frequently associated with sarcopenia in older adults across existing clinical and observational studies. In doing so, this study seeks to clarify how traditional diagnostic frameworks conceptualize muscle deterioration and physical frailty. Expected outcomes include a comprehensive list and analysis of TEAM syndrome patterns related to sarcopenia, and insights into how traditional diagnostic concepts align with or differ from modern biomedical models of sarcopenia. Ultimately, this review aims to lay the foundation for integrative approaches to sarcopenia management and guide future clinical research in geriatric care within complementary and alternative medicine frameworks.

7Expert Perspectives On "Dark Patterns": A Delphi Study

By

Research on the topic of deceptive user interface (UI) designs and dark patterns (DPs) has experienced a noticeable increase in transdisciplinary contexts, spanning human-computer interaction (HCI), psychology and the behavioural sciences, the social sciences, and law and legal studies. A plethora of work in and outside of academia has been carried out to describe and understand the role DPs play across a range of digital technologies and services. However, work that maps out and empirically determines what underlying mechanisms explain the effectiveness of DPs remains nascent. Moreover, plurality in this body of work, dissonance among those in the field, and discord among stakeholders has revealed that the very nature of DPs is complex, murky, everchanging, and discordant, i.e., a wicked problem. As present, no known initiatives have set out to determine what consensus, if any, exists on what DPs are, what they should be called, how they work, and how the effects can be measured. Yet, to establish and promote countermeasures, appropriate regulations, and rigorous forms of study, these foundational gaps must be filled. To address this, we use Delphi study methodology to seek the aid of expert consensus.

12Investigation On How Dynamic Effective Connectivity Patterns Encode The Fluctuating Pain Intensity In Chronic Migraine

By

The perception of chronic migraine is characterised by a long-lasting but dynamically fluctuating headache. In the present study we aim to investigate how this spontaneously fluctuating pain experience is subserved in the brain as variable and dynamic functional connections. Across 4 repeated sessions, we collected EEG data from chronic migraine patients, who were asked to continuously report their ongoing pain. Using an innovative and state of the art dynamic causal modelling approach in a hierarchical Bayesian framework, we will be relating the ongoing and fluctuating pain to the dynamically adapting connectivity patterns in the brain. We are focussing on investigating the core network of well-established brain regions that have been shown to reliably contribute to the processing of pain and hypothesise that: - connections in the ascending pain pathways will be enhanced with increasing pain. - connections from (frontal) regions involved in pain modulation will decrease with increasing pain. - individual differences in pain-connectivity relations could be explained by different levels of pain catastrophising and years of migraine history.

18Using Shopping Data To Investigate Whether Patterns Of Laxative Purchases Are In Part Associated With Weight Management

By

Laxative medications are a group of drugs used to manage constipation and can be categorised as bulk-forming (e.g., bran), faecal softening (e.g., glycerol), osmotic (e.g., lactulose), or stimulant (e.g., senna). The overall rates of laxative use in the general population range from 1% to 18%, and in populations with constipation from 3% to 59% (Werth & Christopher, 2021). Moreover, laxatives are much more commonly used by people with eating disorders than the general population, with clinical studies showing the usage rates to be as high as one in four individuals (Bryant-Waugh et al., 2006; Elran-Barak et al., 2017). The high rate of laxative usage by people suffering from eating disorders, especially the misuse of stimulant laxatives, has serious public health consequences (Hazzard et al., 2021; Levinson et al., 2020). Stimulant laxatives work by stimulating the nerves of colon or rectum and can be helpful when other types of laxatives have been ineffective. However, their misuse can lead to renal failure, and to electrolyte imbalance, which can cause cardiac arrhythmias (Forney et al., 2016). The MHRA reports at least five deaths in relation to stimulant laxative misuse, as well as 33 fatalities related to adverse drug reacti ons to stimulant laxatives (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, 2020b). Furthermore, the vast majority of stimulant laxatives sold are not prescribed by medical professionals: British government data suggests 13.9 million packs of stimulant laxatives were sold in the United Kingdom in 2016, of which just one million (~7%) were prescribed (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, 2020a). Previous studies have not always clearly defined laxatives or provided a product list to establish which laxatives were being used. They also frequently collected data via self-report which have well known biases include self-presentation and impression management, therefore a challenge related to laxative research is the imprecision of the data on use of laxatives. To address this issue, we aim to use observational transactional shopping data on laxative purchases provided by a pharmacy chain in the UK, which will give us a more accurate view of laxative uses and facilitate further research into the public health of the country. 22The Prevalence, Patterns Of Co-occurrence, Perceived Acceptability, And Recognition Of Emotional Intimate Partner Violence (EIPV) Among Young Adults In Poland

By

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern. Emotional intimate partner violence (EIPV) is the most common form of partner abuse. Young adults are at the greatest risk of EIPV (WHO, 2013). EIPV often includes behaviours such as denigration, dominance and intimidation, coercive control, threats to physical and psychological health, and isolation (Dokkendahl et al., 2022). EIPV is likely to be bidirectional, i.e., the same individual receives and uses abusive behaviours (O’Leary & Slep, 2012). EIPV can be particularly difficult to identify due to its subtle and insidious nature, and some acts of emotional abuse may even appear affectionate (Minto et al., 2022). This lack of recognition of EIPV as a serious issue can affect how victims cope with the abuse as well as how much victims and perpetrators are blamed for the abuse. Alarmingly, EIPV remains the least understood and studied form of IPV (Dokkendahl et al., 2022). The overarching aim of the current study is to build a better understanding of the prevalence, patterns of co-occurrence, risk factors, consequences, perceived acceptability, and recognition of EIPV among young adults (aged 18-29 years) in Poland. The study will aim to examine the following main research objectives: O1. To examine the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse (MMEA; Myrphy & Hoover, 1999), the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse – Short Form (MMEA-SF; Maldonado et al., 2022), and the Cyber Dating Abuse Questionnaire (CDAQ; Borrajo et al., 2015) in a population of young women and men (aged 18-29 years) in Poland. O2. To develop and examine psychometric properties of the Recognition of Emotional Intimate Partner Violence (R-EIPV) Scale. O3. To develop and examine psychometric properties of the Emotional Intimate Partner Violence Myth Acceptance (EIPV-MA) Scale. O4. To determine whether women and men who experience/perpetrate PIPV recognise the harm they are experiencing/inflicting. O5. To establish prevalence and profiles of PIPV victimisation and perpetration and associated external criteria (sociodemographic risk factors and consequences).

23Influence Of Discharge Education On Functional Health Patterns Of Patients Undergone Pilonidal Sinus Surgery

By

This quasi-experimental study aims to determine the effect of discharge training on patients who underwent pilonidal sinus surgery using the primary closure method, on Gordon's Functional Health Patterns. Patients in the intervention group were given discharge education and a brochure based on Functional Health Patterns, and those in the control group received routine clinical interventions. The efficacy of discharge education was evaluated using a checklist by calling patients in both groups on postoperative days. Data were collected between June-September 2019 in one public hospital located in Turkey.

25Dietary Patterns And Bayesian Choice

By

Some limited research has indicated cognitive benefits to some dietary patterns (e.g., the Mediterranean diet may improve cognitive outcomes in certain populations). We attempt to further this line of research by examine samples of individuals who self-report specific dietary patterns. Out cognitive measure will be more targeted than previously examined, as participants will be administered an incentivized Bayesian Choice task with the online survey delivery method we will use.

27The Moderating Role Of Sleep- And Mental Health-related Trait Factors In The Relationship Between Emotional Processing And Sleep Patterns: An Experience Sampling Study.

By

Sleep plays an important role in youth mental health (young adults aged 18 to 24 years; Sawyer et al., 2018) by supporting psychological and cognitive processes such as effective stress regulation (Mikoteit et al., 2012) and emotional well-being (van der Helm et al., 2010). While previous research has highlighted that negative affect (McMakin et al., 2016), difficulties in emotion regulation (Palmer et al., 2018; Semplonius & Willoughby, 2018), and high levels of stress (Kahn et al., 2013; Vandekerckhove & Wang, 2018) might lead to poor sleep in youth, much of this work has relied on experimental or cross-sectional designs that emphasize between-person differences, overlooking the dynamic within-person variations in these constructs (Ong et al., 2017; Reddy et al., 2017; Tamm et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2019). Youth represents a critical developmental period where psychobiological and sleep changes result in less sleep drive, and delayed sleep onset (Feinberg et al., 2006), causing fluctuations in sleep patterns, more daytime sleepiness but also heightened emotional reactivity, increased perceived stress, and limited emotion regulation capacity (Bruce et al., 2017; Carvalho-Mendes et al., 2020; Martin-Krumm et al., 2018; Sigfusdottir et al., 2017). To address this, the Experience Sampling Method (ESM; or Ecological Momentary Assessment [EMA], Ebner-Priemer & Trull, 2009; Trull & Ebner-Priemer, 2013) is used in this study capturing within-person variations in real-world settings. Moreover, possible day-to-day changes in the relationship between emotional processing (e.g., affect, emotion regulation difficulties, and stress) and sleep outcomes (e.g., sleep duration and sleep quality) may be influenced by stable trait-level moderators. Key sleep-related traits may impact on this relationship. Such sleep-related traits include the individual’s chronotype, which reflects individual sleep-wake preferences (Duarte & Menna-Barreto, 2022; Roenneberg et al., 2004), as well as dysfunctional sleep beliefs, such as maladaptive cognitions about sleep (Yang et al., 2011). Additionally, a general high susceptibility to stress-related sleep disturbances - indicating a vulnerability to stress-induced sleep disruptions (Drake et al., 2004) - and general pre-sleep arousal, characterized by heightened cognitive or physiological activity before bedtime (Blake et al., 2018; Maskevich et al., 2020), may further contribute to this dynamic. Besides this, mental health-related conditions may also play an important moderating role, including general emotion regulation difficulties (Kahn et al., 2013; Pillai et al., 2014; Vandekerckhove & Wang, 2018), general perceived stress level (Veeramachaneni et al., 2019), experienced stress levels due to exposure to stressful life events (Legget et al., 2016; Lo Martire et al., 2020), depression and anxiety levels over the last weeks (Alvaro et al., 2013), and high social media consumption (Alonzo et al., 2021; Yu et al., 2024). Building on these considerations, this study investigates how sleep-related and mental health-related trait factors moderate the dynamic day-to-day relationship between emotional processing (high levels of negative and low levels of positive affect, difficulties in emotion regulation and perceived stress) and sleep outcomes.

28EEG Patterns Of The Visual Snow Syndrome

By

The Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is a migraine related perceptual disorder(Schankin et al 2014). It was only recently described and added to the international headache classification (ICDH3).The pathophysiology is not completely understood yet, but electrophysiological and imaging studies indicate that a disturbance in the neuronal networks modulating visual perception, resulting in a hyperexcitability of primary and secondary visual brain areas. (Puledda et al 2021) Resting-state EEG analysis will provide information on whether the four canonical (A, B, C, D) microstates (MS) in visual snow syndrome (VSS) differ from those in the control group. It is hypothesized that in VSS there is dysfunction of the visual network (VN) and the salience network (SN) due to hyperexcitability and disorganization of these networks (Klein & Schankin, 2021). Therefore the corresponding MS classes B and C are the focus of the analysis. Another hypothesis is that visual processing might be impaired on a thalamocortical level in the sense of a “thalamocortical dysrhythmia” (Lauschke et al 2016). Therfore we will analyse the alpharhytm over the visual cortex as a potential marker of a sensory gating process. An inverse correlation between the visual detection threshold and the amplitude of the alpharhythm at stimulus onset has been shown in pervious studies(Busch et al 2009). Based on the clinical picture we hypothesize that the power and frequency of the alpha rhythm over the visual cortex will be lower in subjects with VSS compared to controls. Additionally the “photic driving response” (synchronisation of EEG signals with the external visual signal) over the visual cortex might reflect the suspected hyperxcitability of the visual cortex(Hermann et al 2001,Gantenbein et al 2014). We will therefore also compare the response to photic stimulation between subjects with VSS and controls and expect a more pronounced photic driving in subjects with VSS.

38Patterns Arising From The Interaction Between Scalar And Vectorial Instabilities In Two-photon Resonant Kerr Cavities

By

We study pattern formation associated with the polarization degree of freedom of the electric field amplitude in a mean field model describing a nonlinear Kerr medium close to a two-photon resonance, placed inside a ring cavity with flat mirrors and driven by a coherent $\hat x$-polarized plane-wave field. In the self-focusing case, for negative detunings the pattern arises naturally from a codimension two bifurcation. For a critical value of the field intensity there are two wave numbers that become unstable simultaneously, corresponding to two Turing-like instabilities. Considered alone, one of the instabilities would originate a linearly polarized hexagonal pattern whereas the other instability is of pure vectorial origin and would give rise to an elliptically polarized stripe pattern. We show that the competition between the two wavenumbers can originate different structures, being the detuning a natural selection parameter.

41Assortative Mating Patterns Based On Longitudinal Trajectories Of Personality

By

This study aims to examine potential matching patterns in personality traits and relationship-specific characteristic adaptations (CAs) such as attachment patterns, caregiving systems, conflict resolution, partner responsiveness, and trust. We are using secondary data analysis from two existing longitudinal studies of complementary samples: early dating couples and established couples during the first two years of parenthood. We will examine broad patterns of similarity both statically at baseline and dynamically as participants may vary across the different waves. Further, we will examine potential benefits of this matching pattern with respect to relationship quality.

43Orientation Patterns In Adults With Subjective Cognitive Decline

By

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), defined as a subjectively perceived cognitive decline in the absence of deficits in neuropsychological screening tests, may pose a risk factor for the development of dementia. However, it is currently unclear how to measure the potential cognitive changes in subjects with SCD. A recently published study addressing this issue presents promising findings for an orientation task in an unfamiliar real-world setting, showing different wayfinding profiles for older adults with SCD compared to healthy older controls (Marquardt et al., 2023). A similar wayfinding task will be applied in this study with some methodological extensions, like the additional measurement of head movements during the task. This study aims to strengthen the idea and replicate recent findings, that an everyday wayfinding task in unfamiliar settings can be applied to identify older adults with SCD and will help to answer the question whether subtle, daily-life alterations of spatial navigation can contribute to identify persons at risk for developing dementia.

45Regression Patterns In Locally Coherent Sentences

48Learnability Of Morphomic Patterns Of Syncretism

By

We conduct an online artificial language learning study where we train participants on artificial grammars with syncretic patterns of varying complexity. The aim of the study is to investigate the link between differences in learnability of syncretic patterns and cross-linguistic asymmetries in their distribution.

49Modality Shifts In Systemic Therapy: Predictive Patterns In Routine Clinical Practice

By

This study explores the factors influencing modality shifts (e.g., transitioning from individual therapy to couple or family therapy) in German routine systemic therapy. Using data from a practice-research network, a regression analysis identifies key predictors such as session timing and administrative transitions. The findings aim to provide insights into the dynamics of modality shifts and offer practical implications for enhancing therapeutic flexibility and the effective use of treatment modalities in systemic therapy. By bridging clinical practice and research, the project contributes to evidence-based strategies for improving systemic therapeutic interventions.
