Pattern recognition in neuroimaging distinguishes between two types of models: encoding- and decoding models. This distinction is based on the insight that brain state features, that are found to be relevant in an experimental paradigm, carry a different meaning in encoding- than in decoding models. In this paper, we argue that this distinction is not sufficient: Relevant features in encoding- and decoding models carry a different meaning depending on whether they represent causal- or anti-causal relations. We provide a theoretical justification for this argument and conclude that causal inference is essential for interpretation in neuroimaging.

Face recognition is an emerging research area in recognition of the people. A novel feature extraction technique was introduced for robust face recognition. Enhanced Local binary pattern (EnLBP) divided the image into sub regions. For each sub region, the salient features are extracted by obtaining the mean value of each sub region. In LBP, each pixel was replaced by applying LBP into each sub region. In this paper, the mean value of sub region was replaced for the sub region. It reduced the dimension of the image and extracts the salient information on each sub region. The extracted features are compared with similarity measures to recognize the person. EnLBP reduces the operation time and computational complexity of the system. The experimental results were carried out in the standard benchmark database LFW-a. The proposed system achieved a higher recognition rate than other local descriptors.

We explore the Micron Automata Processor (AP) as a suitable commodity technology that can address the growing computational needs of pattern recognition in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. A toy detector model is developed for which an electron track confirmation trigger based on the Micron AP serves as a test case. Although primarily meant for high speed text-based searches, we demonstrate a proof of concept for the use of the Micron AP in a HEP trigger application.

A simulated Hopfield-type neural-net-like model, which is realizable using quantum holography, is proposed for quantum associative memory and pattern recognition.

Neural networks are supposed to recognise blurred images (or patterns) of $N$ pixels (bits) each. Application of the network to an initial blurred version of one of $P$ pre-assigned patterns should converge to the correct pattern. In the "standard" Hopfield model, the $N$ "neurons'' are connected to each other via $N^2$ bonds which contain the information on the stored patterns. Thus computer time and memory in general grow with $N^2$. The Hebb rule assigns synaptic coupling strengths proportional to the overlap of the stored patterns at the two coupled neurons. Here we simulate the Hopfield model on the Barabasi-Albert scale-free network, in which each newly added neuron is connected to only $m$ other neurons, and at the end the number of neurons with $q$ neighbours decays as $1/q^3$. Although the quality of retrieval decreases for small $m$, we find good associative memory for $1 \ll m \ll N$. Hence, these networks gain a factor $N/m \gg 1$ in the computer memory and time.

We propose a method based on finite mixture models for classifying a set of observations into number of different categories. In order to demonstrate the method, we show how the component densities for the mixture model can be derived by using the maximum entropy method in conjunction with conservation of Pythagorean means. Several examples of distributions belonging to the Pythagorean family are derived. A discussion on estimation of model parameters and the number of categories is also given.

This paper presents a study for two languages, namely Indian and European. The main objective of this study is to pattern recognition of children's stories with special reference to Jack tales, in order to find the distinction among these languages. We consider only the Jack tales, because, they have the same type of ideology among the characters of the stories. In this article, Jack tales are classified into two categories, namely Indian (Assamese and Bengali) and European (English) including thirty seven stories in total. Detailed statistical analyses have been performed by quantifying the texts and presenting them graphically. Non-parametric approaches have been used to test the significant differences among the texts under consideration. It has been shown that there exist significant differences among the writing patterns of these stories written by different authors in both the languages. The run test, confidence bands for empirical distribution functions, Smirnov test and Friedman Test are applied to recognize their writing patterns

In the data deluge context, pattern recognition or labeling in streams is becoming quite an essential and pressing task as data flows inside always bigger streams. The assessment of such tasks is not so easy when dealing with temporal data, namely patterns that have a duration (a beginning and an end time-stamp). This paper details an approach based on an editing distance to first align a sequence of labeled temporal segments with a ground truth sequence, and then, by back-tracing an optimal alignment path, to provide a confusion matrix at the label level. From this confusion matrix, standard evaluation measures can easily be derived as well as other measures such as the "latency" that can be quite important in (early) pattern detection applications.

Most of the pattern-recognition self-organizing machines can be classified as adjustable-weight threshold-logic machines, statistical-switching machines, or correlation machines. A noisy pattern is a pattern that varies slightly from a model pattern that the machine has been taught. Computer simulations of a typical machine from each of three classes indicate that the noisy pattern recognition capabilities are poor for statistical-switching machines, good for threshold-logic machines, best for correlation type machines. A proposed correlation self-organizing machine is simple, learns in one step, and recog nizes noisy patterns accurately.

The goal of the initial three-month feasibility study reported here has been the design and testing of critical components of the Message Extraction Through Estimated Relevance (METER) System. Description of the designs and tests are included in this report. In addition, background materials concerning the goals of the project are presented, together with a description of associative methods for document analysis and classification. Finally, a theoretical discussion introduces questions for which additional research will be required. Reference is made to the RADC Automatic Document Classification On- Line (RADCOL) system, which furnished initial designs for METER components. This three-part discussion provides the necessary background in understanding the make-up and operation of the generalized biological neuron and its role in memory and pattern recognition in the brain. There are many specific types of neurons which have adapted to perform specialized operations as part of the central nervous system. Motor neurons deal with the operation of the muscles; optical neurons deal with the operations of the eyes. Although there are differences in physical make-up, their basic operation is similiar and is known as the generalized biological neuron. The physical structure and operation of this neuron will be examined. A brief discussion will follow on how the inter-connection and paralleled structure of neural networks in the optical system and cortex of the brain are able to send, store, and recall information dealing with pattern recognition. This will be followed by a brief discussion of the first mathematical model developed of the generalized biological model. Its make-up is the building block for the vast majority of neural network models which followed. Keywords: Computerized simulation.

Two-dimensional Fourier transform based pattern recognition is used to characterize natural populations of marine algae by their two-dimensional, in vivo fluorescence spectra. The two-dimensional fluorescence spectrum is called and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and is acquired by a portable, multichannel fluorescence spectrophotometer (PMFS). Natural populations in the Gulf of Mexico south of Louisiana and the coastal area near Savannah, Georgia are characterized by their in-situ fluorescence. Characterization of unknown populations is achieved by comparing the unknown EEMs to a collection of standard EEMs acquired from 23 species (6 classes) of marine algae. Pattern recognition results from the data collected along the Georgia coast was confirmed by microscopic examination of selected samples. A conditioning method was used to investigate the orientational responses of ducks as affected by manipulations of the stellar patterns in a planetarium. Under simulated natural skies it was possible to train a bird to a particular direction successively under all positions of the rotating sphere at a constant latitude. The responses were independent of the phase relationships between local time, season, and appearance of the sky provided the bird had been trained under the particular sector of the sphere some time before.

The author has identified the following significant results. Spatial frequency analysis of ERTS-1 images appears to be useful in discriminating between large scale ground patterns in Kansas. Using parameters derived from the optical data processing of ERTS-1 images, sample areas from large physiographic categories have been accurately identified.

Progress is presented for the program goal of developing diagnostic instrumentation for both detecting the presence and degree of hidden chemical corrosion on aircraft titanium and aluminum alloy components.

At the time of this report, the project has been authorized to spend $1,997,949.00 for the Phase 1, 2, and 3 tasks plus the one optional task. The project has accumulated expenses of $1,959,433.00. Work on phases 1 and 2 and the optional task are completed. Work on Phase 3 is nearly complete with the software now in Beta test.

The U.S. Army's decentralized command structure in AirLand Battle doctrine gives individual tactical commanders great responsibility. Notwithstanding the significant roles each staff member plays, the commander himself must be sufficiently cognizant of the battlefield situation to provide his staff with initial and continuing guidance. Moreover, commanders must be able to decide quickly how to respond to ever changing, dynamic conditions on the battlefield. It is often the case that commanders have to rely on intuition when determining how to respond to a particular situation, especially when operating under time pressure or uncertainty. According to The Command Estimate (CGSC ST 100-9, 1989), the key to effective decision making is the estimate of the situation, which is accomplished and revised on a continuous basis throughout planning and execution stages.
