From the city Club of Chicago -- Susana Mendoza, who is seeking a full-term as the state's Comptroller, tells the City Club members of her discovering the state's unpaid bills were much more than she realized, due to many bills sitting on desks in a state agency, that was late in processing over billion in liabilities. This was a major thrust in her pushing to pass the state's new Transparency Law, that requires agencies of government to send her a notice of a debt incurred, even before it's been submitted for payment to her office. The Comptroller also recounts the decline of the state's financial standing in the last two years, due she says largely to Gov Rauner's obstruction in passing state budgets. Perhaps the most critical problem in distributed simulation is that of mapping: without an effective mapping of workload to processors the speedup potential of parallel processing cannot be realized. Mapping a simulation onto a message-passing architecture is especially difficult when the computational workload dynamically changes as a function of time and space; this is exactly the situation faced by battlefield simulations. This paper studies an approach where the simulated battlefield domain is first partitioned into many regions of equal size; typically there are more regions than processors. The regions are then assigned to processors; a processor is responsible for performing all simulation activity associated with the regions. The assignment algorithm is quite simple and attempts to balance load by exploiting locality of workload intensity. The performance of this technique is studied on a simple battlefield simulation implemented on the Flex/32 multiprocessor. Measurements show that the proposed method achieves reasonable processor efficiencies. Furthermore, the method shows promise for use in dynamic remapping of the simulation.

The linear instability that induces a relativistic electron beam passing through a return plasma current to filament transversely is often related to some filamentation mode with wave vector normal to the beam or confused with Weibel modes. We show that these modes may not be relevant in this matter and identify the most unstable mode on the two-stream/filamentation branch as the main trigger for filamentation. This sets both the characteristic transverse and longitudinal filamentation scales in the non-resistive initial stage.

We study a singular-limit problem arising in the modelling of chemical reactions. At finite {\epsilon} > 0, the system is described by a Fokker-Planck convection-diffusion equation with a double-well convection potential. This potential is scaled by 1/{\epsilon}, and in the limit {\epsilon} -> 0, the solution concentrates onto the two wells, resulting into a limiting system that is a pair of ordinary differential equations for the density at the two wells. This convergence has been proved in Peletier, Savar\'e, and Veneroni, SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 42(4):1805-1825, 2010, using the linear structure of the equation. In this paper we re-prove the result by using solely the Wasserstein gradient-flow structure of the system. In particular we make no use of the linearity, nor of the fact that it is a second-order system. The first key step in this approach is a reformulation of the equation as the minimization of an action functional that captures the property of being a curve of maximal slope in an integrated form. The second important step is a rescaling of space. Using only the Wasserstein gradient-flow structure, we prove that the sequence of rescaled solutions is pre-compact in an appropriate topology. We then prove a Gamma-convergence result for the functional in this topology, and we identify the limiting functional and the differential equation that it represents. A consequence of these results is that solutions of the {\epsilon}-problem converge to a solution of the limiting problem.

The problem of computing a maximum a posteriori (MAP) configuration is a central computational challenge associated with Markov random fields. There has been some focus on “tree-based' linear programming (LP) relaxations for the MAP problem. This paper develops a family of super-linearly convergent algorithms for solving these LPs, based on proximal minimization schemes using Bregman divergences. As with standard message passing on graphs, the algorithms are distributed and exploit the underlying graphical structure, and so scale well to large problems. Our algorithms have a double-loop character, with the outer loop corresponding to the proximal sequence, and an inner loop of cyclic Bregman projections used to compute each proximal update. We establish convergence guarantees for our algorithms, and illustrate their performance via some simulations. We also develop two classes of rounding schemes, deterministic and randomized, for obtaining integral configurations from the LP solutions. Our deterministic rounding schemes use a “re-parameterization' property of our algorithms so that when the LP solution is integral, the MAP solution can be obtained even before the LP-solver converges to the optimum. We also propose graph-structured randomized rounding schemes applicable to iterative LP-solving algorithms in general. In this paper we develop the semantics of workstation networks in the office in terms of the concepts of application structure and organizational structure of the office. Application structure is concerned with the rules and constraints of the domain of office work such as accounting, law, or social security regulations. Organizational structure is concerned with the social structure of the office as an organization and as such concerns the subsystem components of the office and roles of office workers. Detailed knowledge of office application structures and organizational structures is necessary in order to understand how they interact and evolve. Problem solving is a pervasive activity within offices. It is necessary within the application domain to fulfill the requirements of the application tasks and it is necessary within the organizational domain to understand the influence of the structure of the organization on the application domain. Problem solving is also performed when office workers apply general knowledge about office procedures to the specific cases encountered in their daily work. We discuss how a description system named OMEGA can aid in the construction of interactive systems whose intent is to describe the application and organization structures. Using the knowledge embedded within itself about the office OMEGA can help support office workers in their problem solving processes. (Author)

April 27, 2011, was a normal workday at DCH Regional Medical Center, until Tuscaloosa found itself in the path of an EF4 tornado. “We handle trauma every day,” said DCH nurse Sharon Oakley. “That is nothing new for us. It’s our job. But that day was something way beyond what we could’ve imagined.”

Discussed are some aspects of implementing the finite element method on parallel computers with local memory and message passing. In particular, the costs of using high order and low order elements, and of direct and iterative solvers are compared for solving the linear systems that occur. Our model of parallel computation is a two-dimensional grid of processors chosen to be similar in shape to the underlying grid. Our main conclusions are that sparse direct solvers generalize naturally to methods based on high order elements, and that direct solvers are adequate for two-dimensional problems, especially for multiple load vectors. High order methods are shown to achieve higher accuracy at less cost on some typical model problems.
