Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren sowie eine Vorrichtung zur quantitativen Bestimmung von Anzahl und Größe von in einem längs eines Strömungskanals fließenden Medium enthaltenen partikulären Komponenten, bei dem Ultraschallwellen in das fließende Medium einkoppeln, die zumindest 10 teilweise an den partikulären Komponenten reflektieren und deren reflektierte Ultraschallwellenanteile in Form von Ultraschallzeitsignalen detektiert werden, die der quantitativen Bestimmung zugrunde gelegt werden. The invention concerns a procedure and device for quantitative determination of number and size of particulate matter within a flowing media propagating along a flow channel whereby ultrasound is coupled into the flowing media and is at least partially reflected by the particulate matter. The detectable reflected ultrasound time signals form part of the quantitative evaluation process.

11DTIC ADA179114: Particle Size Determination From Local Fallout

The purpose of this research was to examine iso-dose rate contours and cloud arrival time data from atmospheric nuclear tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site to validate size distributions currently used in fallout prediction models or to propose new size distributions. Results were obtained from studies of eight air, nine tower, two surface and two shallow subsurface bursts. Yields ranged from 0.3 to 74 kilotons and heights of burst ranged from - 67 to 1500 feet. The tests examined are tabulated in Appendix A. Iso-dose rate contours from U.S. atmospheric nuclear tests (9) were digitized and then integrated numerically to obtain information on the fraction of activity grounded with time. The parameters of the best-fit lognormal and best-fit power- law particle-size distributions were then found for each burst studied. There was insufficient fallout from tower and air bursts to make conclusive determinations about the size distributions produced by these classes of bursts. For surface and shallow subsurface bursts the debris may be characterized by a lognormal distribution, by a power-law r to the -n power distribution, or by a linear combination of these or possibly other distribution functions. While no definitive distribution function was established, a linear combination of lognormal distributions seems to hold the most promise. In addition, a lower bound of 2210 r-sq. mi/hr-kt was established for the source normalization constant.

A photoextinction method has been developed to determine particle- size distributions of setting aerosols in a large test chamber. The theory of photoextinction by aerosol particles were explored and applied to a method of determining particle-size distributions from decay measurements based on Stokes' law. A photometric measuring apparatus was constructed and installed in the testing facility. Measurements of changes in light transmission were made for several dissemination experiments. Data reduction procedures were investigated with the data obtained. Errors in both theory and measuring instrumental parameters are discussed.

Scatter from glass beads placed on a mirror was measured using a quartz lamp and laser. Data were obtained in the plane containing the normal to the surface and the incident beam. For the quartz lamp the best correlation can be obtained for data measured at a zenith of 55 deg and 180 deg from the incident beam. The best correlation when the laser is used is obtained at about the same position. However, the correlation variables are angular spacing of the minimums of the data versus the size. Whereas, with the quartz lamp the correlation variables are the amount of scattered energy versus size.

Scatter measurements were taken from glass spheres of size 5 to 50 microns placed on a mirror to see whether such scatter data could be correlated with size. The spheres were illuminated with a laser whose wavelength was 0.62 microns. A Gonioreflectometer was used to vary the detector between the normal to the mirror and 85 deg from the normal and in the plane containing the normal to the mirror and the incident laser light. The azimuth of the detector with respect to the source was 180 deg. The light detector was driven by a step motor. The scatter was dark and bright lines. They appeared as minima and maxima on the output recorder. As the size of the beads increased the number of maxima increased.

A dual beam apparatus was developed which simultaneously measured particle size (D32) at the entrance and exit of an exhaust nozzle of a small solid propellant rocket motor. The diameters were determined using measurements of diffractively scattered laser power spectra. The apparatus was calibrated by using spherical glass beads and aluminum oxide powder. Measurements were successfully made at both locations.

The theory and operational technique of the Sharples Micromerograph are described. An investigation was carried out to assess its efficiency as an automated weight sedimentometer for the evaluation of weight/size distribution of particulate materials. Results show that its accuracy is reduced by failure to sediment the whole of the powder under test, this effect being accentuated in the case of most fine powders. The instrument cannot be used satisfactorily for control work unless electrostatic charging of the sedimenting material is eliminated and a modification is suggested.

A light transmission technique was used to measure the mean size of a group of graphite particles suspended in water and the particle sizes in an aerosol of ammonium chloride in air. The main aim of this paper is to present the research findings which come out from the experimental determination of the influence of input raw material properties and composition on the water absorption of straw-plastic composites (SPC). During the SPCs production, important raw material parameters such as straw sawdust particle size, straw/plastic concentration ratio or type of plastic matrix can be recognized. In this research study, the aim was to produce SPCs of an acceptable and competitive level of quality which is determined from the final mechanical properties of SPCs. Particle size of straw sawdust used for production of SPC has significant influence on mechanical properties of composites and also on other important properties (water absorption, hardness, frost resistance, etc.).  The paper deals with the determination of the impact and the relationship between the input straw sawdust particles sizes, straw/plastic concentration ratio and water absorption of composites. By side intention of authors is to determine the possibilities of waste raw materials usage. The experimental research findings were obtained using a semi-operational injection molding press where the injection is provided by a working screw. As the input raw material, wheat straw, HDPE plastic matrix and recycled HDPE, represented by lids from PET bottles, was used. The effect of the input straw sawdust particle size on water absorption was determined according to a combination and default levels of straw/HDPE concentration ratio, using recycled HDPE instead of virgin HDPE and particle size of straw sawdust.

The purpose of the work was to determine the validity limits of a previously derived theoretical model of an electrostatic precipitator air sampler. The theoretical model was investigated by insertion of radioactive micronsize microspheres into a closed-loop wind tunnel, whose airstream flows into an electrostatic precipitator. The precipitation pattern on the collection plates was determined by the pattern of radioactivity. Ideally, the particles should be segregated by size. The results were compared to the theoretical predictions which are calculated with a digital computer program. Conclusions are that (1) the results are reproducible within experimental error; (2) the physical phenomena in the precipitator can be described by mathematical models as suggested in the original theoretical study; (3) mathematical models being used are probably imperfect; and (4) investigation of the validity of the theoretical model should continue.
