As it turns out, the looming specter of mass extinction isn't enough to change many people's minds, as our severance from other life on this planet is so deep and severe that there is no way to convince a person through "logic" or data-driven reasoning WHY we must shut this shit down for good, and not pursue more techo-fixes that further perpetuate this life-destroying leviathan into the future. Logic, data -- this is a tool, a weapon, and it can be used just as effectively by the savvy green capitalist as by the crunchy deep ecologist. If you can't feel the pain of the deep violations of the living planet, no well crafted argument is going to convince you to care."

Improved orbits are presented for the visual binaries WDS 02366+1227, WDS 02434-6643, WDS 03244-1539, WDS 08507+1800, WDS 09128-6055, WDS 11532-1540, WDS 17375+2419, and WDS 22408-0333. The latest orbits for these binaries were demonstrating a great inconsistency between the systemic mass obtained through Kepler's Third Law and that calculated as a sum of their components' mass through standard mass-luminosity and mass-spectrum relationships. Our improvement allowed us to obtain consistent systemic masses for WDS 02434-6643 and WDS 09128-6055 without a need for changing the Hipparcos parallax. For the remaining 6 pairs, we suggest the use of their dynamical parallax as a reliable distance estimate unless more precise parallax is reported. Astrophysical and dynamical properties of individual objects are discussed.

We show that a straightforward application of the predicted relation connecting the absolute K magnitude of fundamental RR Lyrae variables to their period and metal content, together with current evolutionary predictions on the mass and luminosity of Horizontal Branch stars, supply a distance estimate to the prototype star RR Lyr in close agreement with the recent parallax determination by HST (Benedict et al. 2002), largely unaffected by the interstellar extinction correction. Adopting =0.12+-0.10 mag as a safe estimate of the extinction correction to RR Lyr, we obtain a "pulsation" parallax of 3.858+-0.131 mas which agrees quite well, and with a smaller formal error, with the HST measurement (3.82+-0.20 mas) and with the weighted average of HST, Hipparcos, and ground-based determinations (3.87+-0.19 mas). This result suggests that near-infrared magnitudes and pulsation models could constrain the distance to well-studied RR Lyrae stars, both in the field and in globular clusters, with an accuracy better than current direct trigonometric measurements.

The KMZ turret finder is calibrated to be used on a camera with ca.75 mm between the lens of the finder and the middle of the taking lens. When used on A FED or FED-2 (or i.e. a screw mount LEICA), this distance is only around 60mm. The purpose of this adapter is to compensate the parallax error resulting from this combination. It simply moves the turret finder 15 mm higher above the taking lens and the view of lens and finder should be the same. Because not all cold-shoe adapters are the same, the adapter is made a little too wide, and has to be 'fittet' using a file.

We investigate and parameterise high proper motion red stars in the Torino Observatory Parallax Program. Observations of 27 objects were made over the period 1994 - 2001 on the 1.05m Torino telescope. The trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions were determined using standard techniques. We determine parallaxes and proper motions, and by comparison to models we infer masses, ages, and {metallicities}. Of the 27 objects, 22 are within 25pc and 4 appear to be subdwarfs. There are published parallaxes for 18 objects, and all but 4 agree to within 2$\sigma$. The discrepancies are discussed.

We report on the analysis of ~22,000 M dwarfs using a statistical parallax method. This technique employs a maximum-likelihood formulation to simultaneously solve for the absolute magnitude, velocity ellipsoid parameters and reflex solar motion of a homogeneous stellar sample, and has previously been applied to Galactic RR Lyrae and Cepheid populations and to the Palomar/Michigan State University (PMSU) survey of nearby low-mass stars. We analyze subsamples of the most recent spectroscopic catalog of M dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to determine absolute magnitudes and kinematic properties as a function of spectral type, color, chromospheric activity and metallicity. We find new, independent spectral type-absolute magnitude relations, and color-absolute magnitude relations in the SDSS filters, and compare to those found from other methods. Active stars have brighter absolute magnitudes and lower metallicity stars have fainter absolute magnitudes for stars of type M0-M4. Our kinematic analysis confirms previous results for the solar motion and velocity dispersions, with more distant stars possessing larger peculiar motions, and chromospherically active (younger) stars having smaller velocity dispersions than their inactive counterparts. We find some evidence for systematic differences in the mean U and W velocities of samples subdivided by color.

Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we have measured a trigonometric parallax for the micro quasar GRS 1915+105, which contains a black hole and a K-giant companion. This yields a direct distance estimate of 8.6 (+2.0,-1.6) kpc and a revised estimate for the mass of the black hole of 12.4 (+2.0,-1.8) Msun. GRS 1915+105 is at about the same distance as some HII regions and water masers associated with high-mass star formation in the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Galaxy. The absolute proper motion of GRS 1915+105 is -3.19 +/- 0.03 mas/y and -6.24 +/- 0.05 mas/y toward the east and north, respectively, which corresponds to a modest peculiar speed of 22 +/-24 km/s at the parallax distance, suggesting that the binary did not receive a large velocity kick when the black hole formed. On one observational epoch, GRS 1915+105 displayed superluminal motion along the direction of its approaching jet. Considering previous observations of jet motions, the jet in GRS 1915+105 can be modeled with a jet inclination to the line of sight of 60 +/- 5 deg and a variable flow speed between 0.65c and 0.81c, which possibly indicates deceleration of the jet at distances from the black hole >2000 AU. Finally, using our measurements of distance and estimates of black hole mass and inclination, we provisionally confirm our earlier result that the black hole is spinning very rapidly.

The recent paper published in European Journal of Physics [1] aimed to demonstrate the kinematical and dynamical equivalence of heliocentric and geocentric systems. The work is performed in the Neo-Tychonian system, with key assumption that orbits of distant masses around the Earth are synchronized with the Sun's orbit. Motion of Sun and Mars have been analysed, and the conclusion was reached that the very fact of the accelerated motion of the Universe as a whole produces the so-called "pseudo-potential" that not only explains the origin of the pseudo-forces, but also the very motion of the celestial bodies as seen from the static Earth. After the paper was published, the question was raised if that same potential can explain the motion of the distant stars that are not affected by the Sun's gravity (unlike Mars), and if it can be used to reproduce the observation of the stellar parallax. The answer is found to be positive.
