Somewhere in the world, an unknown virus is growing in the bloodstream of an animal, just waiting to jump to the human population. Since the 1980s, outbreaks of infectious diseases have more than tripled worldwide. For example, one million people die each year from mosquito-borne illness. And with rising temperatures and population growth, the death toll will likely grow. To stay ahead of a potentially devastating global pandemic, scientists have come up with new ways to research and learn about diseases. Ron Fouchier, a physician who studies genetic mutations at the Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, genetically modified the H5N1 bird flu virus to become airborne. "So now we can find out exactly what it takes for an animal virus to become airborne," he told VICE News. Fouchier's work originally sent shockwaves through the international community, but global health experts have found that diligent surveillance and research of these diseases is the key to keeping them at bay. "Human beings are only as strong as our weakest surveillance system," Larry Brilliant, a physician who helped eradicate smallpox, told VICE News. As Chairman of the Skoll Global Threat Fund, his work now focuses on using mobile data to track outbreaks. "This is one instance where 'America First' means working with the poorest countries in the world to protect them out of selfishness, our own enlightened self-interest." Uganda, where the Zika virus was first discovered in 1947, already uses a decentralized network of hospitals, laboratories, and motorcycle riders to keep scientists up to date on medical anomalies, which allows them to quickly contain emerging threats. VICE founder Suroosh Alvi went to the Zika Forest and Kampala, Uganda, to see how vulnerable humans are to a new pandemic and the options for staving one off. The COVID-19 pandemic has touched all of our lives in incredibly varied ways, with no two experiences exactly alike. Despite this, we all probably share the same thought: how can we stop this from happening again? In this episode of our Anatomy of a Pandemic series, we ask that question in the context of wildlife conservation. Why is protecting biodiversity synonymous with protecting our own health? If spillover events themselves are inevitable, how can we limit the likelihood that they will become epidemics or pandemics? Where do commercial wildlife markets and subsistence hunting fit into the equation? The Covid-19 pandemic could not have come at a worse time, as many countries in the MENA region remain engulfed in vicious internal conflicts or must cope with structural socio-economic distress and popular dissent. In many respects, such a context and many of its problems resemble those that formed the backdrop for the Arab Spring in 2011. Exactly like what happens with humans, who are hit the hardest when presenting pre-existing conditions, MENA states have been impacted because of their own pre-existing conditions. In this sense, the Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare all the vulnerabilities and deficiencies of these states’ structures, and has aggravated pre-existing political, social, and economic shortcomings. How has the pandemic impacted state structures? What is its effect on organized protests and spontaneous popular movements? What are the possible long-term consequences?

Guido Alfani explores the transformative effects of pandemics like the Black Death

The viruses coexist for approx. 300 million years with the humans. Sometimes viruses can infect people on a large scale. But how was the current pandemic possible?  Global warming is causing extreme weather events that have led to an increase in infectious diseases. The new climate can support epidemiological vectors for longer periods of time, creating more favorable conditions for replication and the emergence of new vectors.  In the case of emerging infectious diseases, it is considered that there is a border that has already been crossed. Viruses normally have a native area (their "reservoir") from which they should not be pushed out. This creates a dangerous intimacy, with "hotspots" that include locations such as markets, which become real hotbeds of epidemics.  DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.26974.87364

This kind of perpetual rejection and hurt often renders the abuser's judgment a self-fulfilling prophecy: CPTSD survivors are typically indistinguishable from patients with Borderline Personality Disorder in their impulsivity, recklessness, promiscuity, substance abuse, mood lability, and emotional dysregulation. Exposed to the abuser's grinding and relentless devaluation, his "intimate" partners and (in)significant others resort to vengeful and demonstrative self-trashing intended to hurt the perpetrator by debasing his "property" often in humiliating public displays of infidelity and drunkenness or by committing antisocial, even criminal, acts. With these self-destructive actions, the victim is protesting: "You say that my life is meaningless? I am going to make myself meaningful to you via your pain, by harming you, and by traumatizing and provoking you!"

OBJECTIVES This scoping review seeks to summarize/identify the existing evidence and gaps concerning the sociocultural issues concerning institutional quarantine and isolation during the major pandemics and near pandemics in Africa which occurred between the years 2000 and 2022. METHODS Research Design This study will adopt a scoping review design, and it will be conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley’s (2005) guidelines for conducting scoping reviews [1]. Research Question The research question this scoping review seeks to answer is “What empirical evidence and gaps exist on the sociocultural issues concerning institutional quarantine and isolation during viral pandemics (and near pandemics) in Africa?” Identification of Literature An online systematic search of nine research databases (SCOPUS, PubMed, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), CINAHL Ultimate, APA PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source, SPORTDiscus with Full Text, and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection) will be conducted to identify and retrieve literatures published between 2000 and 2022 using a combination of relevant search terms, Boolean operators (“AND” and “OR”), and truncations (“*” or “#”) (Tables S1 to S3; Supplementary file). Selection of Literature All the retrieved literature will be imported into Rayyan web application for deduplication of all duplicate records [2]. The deduplicated literatures will be subjected to a two-stage screening process by two independent reviewers who were guided by a set of specific eligibility criteria. The first stage of screening will involve title and abstract screening of the deduplicated literature to identify those literature that are relevant at prima facie. The non-relevant literature will be identified at the first-stage screening will be excluded while the remaining ones will be subjected to a second-stage screening. In the second stage screening, a full text evaluation of the residual literature will be done. Following the full text evaluation, only those literature that meet the inclusion criteria will be included in the review. Also, during the two-stage screening process, all conflicts will be resolved through thorough discussion between the two reviewers. Also, the reference lists of the included literature will be manually searched to identify additional literature for inclusion into the review. In this scoping review, only those literatures that meet the following criteria will be included: • Peer-reviewed journal articles • Articles published in English • Articles reporting empirical findings on the sociocultural issues concerning institutional quarantine and isolation during viral pandemics in Africa • Articles published between the year 2000 and 2022 • Articles with accessible full texts However, those literature meeting the following criteria will be excluded: • Gray literature (e.g., books, book chapters, magazines, etc.) • Peer-reviewed literature that were not original research journal articles (e.g., systematic reviews, letters, opinions, comments, editorials, etc.) • Literatures that were published in other languages asides from English • Literatures that reported empirical findings on the sociocultural issues concerning institutional quarantine and isolation during non-viral pandemics (and near pandemics) in Africa • Literatures that did not report empirical findings on the sociocultural issues concerning institutional quarantine and isolation during viral pandemics (and near pandemics) in Africa • Literatures published before the year 2000 and after the year 2022 Data Charting, Collation, and Summarisation From the literature that will be included, data will be extracted using a bespoke data extraction sheet. The data extracted include names of authors, year of publication, authors’ names, country/location of the study, sample size, study population/sample characteristics, study design, study instruments, findings, and conclusions. The extracted data will be collated, summarized, and presented in texts and tables.

Two pandemics--COVID-19 and systemic racism--are confronting American society, and by extension K-12 schools. Both pandemics have precipitated immediate challenges that schools must navigate, and also draw attention to longstanding, chronic problems in the education system. It's more clear than ever that a return to "normal" won't serve all students well. To make sense of the potential for 2020 to change K-12 schools forever, this paper offers a framework for understanding why some crisis-induced innovations persist, while others are cast aside when conditions normalize. To illuminate the potential for current events to catalyze lasting changes in K-12 schools, this paper offers school system leaders and policymakers insight into four key dynamics at work in organizational models: (1) Resources alone aren't likely to change what schools can do, but resources that power new processes could; (2) To stick around, new processes have to outperform old ones when it comes to meeting schools' existing priorities; (3) New priorities are a key catalyst for transformational change because they hold sway over resources and processes; and (4) Change efforts must overcome the persistence of legacy processes and competing priorities. The paper concludes with concrete recommendations guided by the four-box framework for organizational models. These recommendations help decision-makers focus on where change is possible, and take targeted action to introduce and support innovations that enable every learner to reach his or her full potential.
