4Paleoecology Of Cenozoic Rhinos From Northwest China: A Stable Isotope Perspective

By

Paleoecology of Cenozoic rhinos from northwest China: a stable isotope perspective 作者: Dana BIASATTI 1 WANG Yang 1,2,3 DENG Tao 2,4,5 作者单位: 1. Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, Florida State University and National High Magnetic Field Laboratory 2. Key Laboratory of Vertebrate Evolution and Human Origins, Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences 3. Department of Ecology, Jinan University 4. CAS Center for Excellence in Tibetan Plateau Earth Sciences 5. University of Chinese Academy of Sciences 通讯作者: Dana BIASATTI Email:[email protected] 提交时间: 2017-08-24 摘要: The diets and environments of fossil rhinocerotoids from the Linxia Basin, Gansu, China, ranging in age from 25 to 2.5 Ma, were reconstructed based on bulk and serial carbon (C) and oxygen (O) isotope analyses of tooth enamel. The results support many previous hypotheses inferred from dentition and cranial and limb morphology and offer new insight on the paleoecology of some genera. The isotopic results support the following previous hypotheses: the Late Oligocene rhino Paraceratherium inhabited a forested environment, and the coexisting rhino Allacerops lived in a relatively open habitat and had a less specialized diet; the Middle Miocene Hispanotherium grazed in open territory, whereas the contemporaneous Alicornops had a more generalized diet in a forested environment; and the Late Miocene rhino Parelasmotherium grazed in an open steppe habitat. The isotope data indicate that the rhinos Acerorhinus and Dicerorhinus inhabited open steppe environments, inconsistent with previous inferences that these two rhinos dwelled in forested environments. The isotopic results are not conclusive concerning the habitat of Iranotherium, but support previous hypotheses that this rhino was a specialized C3 grazer. The results also suggest that Chilotherium was a forest-dweller throughout much of the Late Miocene, but occupied a more open environment by the end of the Late Miocene. Additionally, the results are consistent with previous hypotheses that the Pliocene rhino Shansirhinus and the Pleistocene rhino Coelodonta were grazers in open habitats. Finally, the C isotope data support that all rhinos in this study were pure C3 feeders, confirming that C4 grasses were not an important component of the plant biomass in the Linxia Basin from 25 to 2.5 Ma. Dana BIASATTI,WANG Yang, DENG Tao.(2017).Paleoecology of Cenozoic rhinos from northwest China: a stable isotope perspective.古脊椎动物学报.doi:10.19615/j.cnki.1000-3118.170519 版本历史 [V1] 2017-08-24 15:37:58 ChinaXiv:201708.00332V1 下载全文

21Paleoecology Of Panandhro Lignites, Gujarat, India

The present paper records palynofossils from the Panandhro lignite succession of Gujarat, India. Six genera belong to pteridophytes, two genera belong to gymnosperms and remaining genera belong to angiosperms, along with fungal remains and foraminiferal linings. Ecological analysis of the palynofossil assemblage shows the freshwater swamp and water edge, forest, low lands, montane and mangrove group elements. Overall, the assemblage suggests that the prevalence of brackish to freshwater swamp vegetation during the deposition of the Panandhro lignites.

26Paleoecology Of Pleistocene Mammals And Paleoclimatic Change In South China: Evidence From Stable Carbon And Oxygen Isotopes

By

The role of climate change in the evolution and diversification of hominoids remains a hotly debated issue. Stable isotope analyses of fossil mammals that coexisted with the hominoids can provide insights into hominoid palaeoenvironments and shed light on this debate. Here, we report results of stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of tooth enamel samples from a variety of Pleistocene mammals including pandas, deer, elephants, pigs, rhinos, and bovids from two hominoid fossil localities (Yugong Cave and Baxian Cave) in South China. Enamel δ 13 C values indicate that most of the mammals living in the study area during the late Middle Pleistocene had C 3 -based diets but a small number of individuals consumed some C 4 grasses. This indicates the presence of C 4 plants in the region during the late Middle Pleistocene, most likely in patches of open areas in a predominantly forested environment. However, during the early Late Pleistocene, all of the mammals examined had C 3 -based diets, except one bovid and one panda that may have ingested small amounts of C 4 plants. This indicates a dense forested environment with little C 4 grasses during the early Late Pleistocene. Like the Early Pleistocene pygmy panda (Ailuropoda microta) from Yanliang Cave, the late Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda baconi from Yugong Cave and the early Late Pleistocene Ailuropoda melanoleuca from Baxian Cave had higher mean diet-δ 13 C values than other co-occurring herbivores, indicating they preferred relatively open forest habitats and had more restricted diets compared to other mammals. The reconstructed mean paleo-meteoric water δ 18 O w values are lower than the annual average δ 18 O w value of modern precipitation in the region, suggesting that the climatic conditions during the times when these Pleistocene mammals were alive were colder and/or wetter than today. In addition, δ 18 O values of the obligate drinkers (pigs, rhinos, bovids) display an overall decreasing trend, accompanied by increased range of δ 18 O variations, from the Early Pleistocene to the early Late Pleistocene. This suggests that the regional climate became colder and/or wetter, with increased seasonality, from the Early Pleistocene to the early Late Pleistocene, likely related to intensified glaciation. The change in climate to colder conditions may be responsible for the extinction of the Gigantopithecus in this region.
