Text file only. ------------------------ Cloud 9 bouldering guide - Page 17 ---------------- Mullie's Wall Mullie's marks the southermost developed area at Cloud 9 (C4), and offers the best landings in the entire area (soft beds of pine needles are the rule, not the exception). This is also the closest area to the road, so keep a low profile. Approaching is easiest if you stay on the road all the way to the top, then cut east (left) through the trees 50 yards after the road crests the ridge. This wall is easily distinguished by its light brown hue, abundance of jutting crystal and pebbles, and impressive length (150 feet). It's also a killer place to warm up, or finish out. Mullie's Wall Due to the abundance of holds and features litter over the face, it is difficult to indivuate the problems without getting into variations and eliminates. Suffice it to say that most of the lines are no harder than V3 or 4. Don't miss the beautiful highball are te on the wall's right edge! 1. SMDC (Steve Mullie Down Climb) V0: The leftmost crease on the wall, about 50 feet right of the wall's right end (not much has been done past here because the wall is short). This climb remains a project as an upclimb. 2. V1: up crystals eight feet right of SMDC. 3. V1: Sharp flakes straight up the face five feet further right. 4. V2: Strange, ramping are te just left of the second crease. 5. V4: Just right of the second crease locate two face high white crystals on an otherwise blank wall. Crank a high cross over to a big pebble then head on up. Classic! 6. V2: Super-classic. Begin on surprising solid jutting crystals, continue up 15 feet on technical terrain to the lip. An immaculate crystal-pulling excursion Ala the best routes at Maple Canyon. 7. V1: Another classic. Up the rounded pebble-studded groove five feet left of the arete. 8. Arete V3: One of the best problems in the Front Range, period. Up the perfectly rounded arete feature on the wall's right end, topping out slightly right for extra value. A spicy romp on distant crystals that will challenge and amaze even the most jaded of climbers. Unnamed Traverse Wall Until someone comes up with a proper name for this impressive formation, we won't give it one. This is by far the biggest spire at Cloud Nine and offers perfectly viable face climbs on every side (the highest face on the north side is a good 70 feet bottom to top), all of which would need to bolted. Unmistakably from any vantage point above Mullie's, the spire appears as a red castle of beautiful, fluted Fountain sandstone when seen up close.the rib-like features and strange, water-sculped grooves almost remind one of limestone, and the rock is perfect. So far, only a pumpy left to right traverse has been done at the base of the north wall. 1. Matt and Trip's Traverse V7: Approach by walking twenty feet south from the arete at the base of Mullie's. Begin low and left on pockets dotting the left edge of the buttress, surf past jugs and a couple of resting cracks, then set up for the immaculate middle section on iron-hard purple rock before you launch into the crux, a tenuous hand match and sidestep move on steep, featureless rock at the very end of the traverse. Athletic, killer holds, perfect landing, and a good north-facing hang on hotter days. The huge foot ledges below the crux are off route. The Corridor Some of the best stone at Cloud 9, though the landings on the up problems leave much to be desired. The climbing here is characterized by long pulls on incuts, high above rocky, sloped landings, and dark brown rock is coated in beautiful streaks of green and yellow lichen. Also, a great place to hang on windy days, as the western wall of the corridor completely blocks the Chinook coming off the Divide. 1. Finger Crack V2: Above the chockstones at the top (north) end of the Corridor is a small, overhanging wall with a perfect finger crack splitting the right face. Up locks behind dinner plates to a juggy lip. Classic. 2. V3: The finish to the long traverse, this is the leftmost line on the wall just below the huge chockstones that jam the Corridor. Classic, bad landing. 3. V2: Up ripply rock ten feet right above the V3 finish. Decent landing, good thank God jugs at the lip. 4. Visual representation and data visualization of the history of the Emperor Ferdinand Northern railway from the beginning of the operation on the 6th. of January 1838 to the end of the year 1853. Series of 9 lithographs consisting of 8 sheets and title page, plus a sheet of explanations in 3 languages ​​and booklet of 8 pages on the development of the Kaiser Ferdinands Nordbahn in the first 16 years of its existence. Each two years on a sheet shows in addition to the route network and the locomotive and wagon inventory, revenues, freight, types of shipments, dividends paid, types of revenue and many other statistics. There are 2 years on every sheet, the horizontal scale is the timeline with the major events of the company like the opening of a new part of the track. There is a map of the rail network on every sheet for every year. The vertical scale are the revenues, from the bottom to the top income with passengers, from the top to the bottom income for transport of goods. In the lower right of every year you can see the number of locomotives, close to the center the number of the different wagons:1st class, 2nd class, 3rd class and freight wagons. As a data visualization this is very unusual in the amount of different kinds of data mixed together on one chart, over time. It is also very early for such an ambitious effort.

Shows the recently established system of U.S. numbered highways that replaced the system of named trails (Lincoln Highway, etc.). Speed limits in each state (45 mph highest listed) are given as well as "registration" information: "Visiting motorists who tarry on their journey are requested by most states to register with the local authorities." Each state has its own map. A very nice production. Full color. Softcover, stapled atlas, folded to booklet 31 x 21 1/2 cm. opening to 42 cm. With illustration of an Indian in feather headdress raising his right hand to a motorist. Cover title: "Clason's Touring Atlas Of The United States And Canada. New Census Edition ..." There are maps of western states and detailed maps of mining areas showing claims. All of the detailed claim maps (except Dahlonega District in Georgia) appear on the verso of the state maps in Bradstreet's Pocket Atlas of 1882 (see our copy). At the end of the atlas there is a note by the publisher stating that any of the maps can be supplied for any use (We assume that Bradstreet made use of this offer) and that additional maps will be provided in "the forthcoming edition." Was there another, expanded edition? Atlas is bound into burgandy leather covers with "Pocket Mining Atlas." stamped in gilt. None found.

A photographically illustrated book, with a description of the geographical and geological features, and the resources on the American West. Containing half title page, viii, 150 pages of text and 30 mounted Photographic views within the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada; twelve in Wyoming, sixteen in Utah, and two in California, depicting scenes along the line of the Union Pacific, intended to illustrate the geology which can be observed from the train. The collection prepared by the famous geologist, Ferdinand V. Hayden. The photographs, taken by A.J. Russell, dated 1868-1870. Hayden explains in the book: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to the Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study …” Bound in contemporary three-quarter green morocco over green cloth, edges gilt, spine gilt with title “Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery. Hayden".

"Clarkson was a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire and, alongside Wilberforce and Granville Sharp, was instrumental in convincing the British public and Parliament of the moral necessity of abolishing it. He took a leading role in the affairs of the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade and undertook the dangerous task of collecting evidence from various British ports with which to lobby Parliament. These included first hand accounts from mariners, such as officers and ship's surgeons, as well as dockworkers and marine-side landlords. He also gathered examples of the grim restraining apparatus used aboard slave ships. Clarkson was attacked on one trip to Liverpool, and was nearly killed by a gang of sailors who had been paid to assassinate him. Clarkson's selfless efforts generated and sustained a national movement which mobilised public opinion as never before, until the Slave Trade Act was passed in 1807. The poet William Wordsworth was so impressed with Clarkson's achievements that he was moved to write the 'Sonnet, To Thomas Clarkson, On the final passing of the Bill for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, March, 1807.' A tablet to his memory lies in Westminster Abbey." (Adrian Harrington, 2021) The plate showing the human cargo of the slave ship Brooks originally appeared in the late 18th century and had a powerful affect on public opinion. The second plate is an interesting data visualization of the rise of the abolitionist movement against the slave trade leading to its outlawing in Britain in 1807.
