Among the consequences of the disordered interaction topology underlying many social, techno- logical and biological systems, a particularly important one is that some nodes, just because of their position in the network, may have a disproportionate effect on dynamical processes mediated by the complex interaction pattern. For example, the early adoption by an opinion leader in a social network may change the fate of a commercial product, or just a few super-spreaders may determine the virality of a meme in social media. Despite many recent efforts, the formulation of an accurate method to optimally identify influential nodes in complex network topologies remains an unsolved challenge. Here, we present the exact solution of the problem for the specific, but highly relevant, case of the Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) model for epidemic spreading at criticality. By exploiting the mapping between bond percolation and the static properties of SIR, we prove that the recently introduced Non-Backtracking centrality is the optimal criterion for the identification of influential spreaders in locally tree-like networks at criticality. By means of simulations on synthetic networks and on a very extensive set of real-world networks, we show that the Non-Backtracking centrality is a highly reliable metric to identify top influential spreaders also in generic graphs not embedded in space, and for noncritical spreading.

A complete derivation, from first principles, of the reaction-rate formula for a generic reaction taking place in an out of equilibrium quantum-field system is given. It is shown that the formula involves no finite-volume correction. Each term of the reaction-rate formula represents a set of physical processes that contribute to the reaction under consideration.

We consider a normal metal - superconductor (N-S) junction in the regime, when electrons in the normal metal are driven out of equilibrium. We show that the non-equilibrium fluctuations of the electron density in the N-layer cause the fluctuations of the phase of the order parameter in the S-layer. As a result, the density of states in the superconductor deviates from the BCS form, most notably the density of states in the gap becomes finite. This effect can be viewed as a result of the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the non-equilibrium, and can be described in terms of a low energy collective mode of the junction, which couples normal currents in N-layer and supercurrents. This mode is analogous to the Schmid-Sch\"{o}n mode. To interpret their measurements of the tunneling current, Pothier {\em et. al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79}, 3490 (1997)] had to assume that the energy relaxation rate in the normal metal is surprisingly high. The broadening of the BCS singularity of the density of states in the S-layer manifest itself similarly to the broadening of the distribution function. Mechanism suggested here can be a possible explanation of this experimental puzzle. We also propose an independent experiment to test our explanation.

Stochastic effects may cause fade-out of an infectious disease in a population immediately after an epidemic outbreak. We develop WKB theory to determine the most probable path of the system toward epidemic fade-out and to evaluate the fade-out probability. The most probable path is an instanton-like orbit in the phase space of the underlying Hamiltonian flow.

Recent observations of Kepler multi-planet systems have revealed a number of systems with planets very close to second-order mean motion resonances (MMRs, with period ratio $1:3$, $3:5$, etc.) We present an analytic study of resonance capture and its stability for planets migrating in gaseous disks. Resonance capture requires slow convergent migration of the planets, with sufficiently large eccentricity damping timescale $T_e$ and small pre-resonance eccentricities. We quantify these requirements and find that they can be satisfied for super-Earths under protoplanetary disk conditions. For planets captured into resonance, an equilibrium state can be reached, in which eccentricity excitation due to resonant planet-planet interaction balances eccentricity damping due to planet-disk interaction. We show that this "captured" equilibrium can be overstable, leading to partial or permanent escape of the planets from the resonance. In general, the stability of the captured state depends on the inner to outer planet mass ratio $q=m_1/m_2$ and the ratio of the eccentricity damping times. The overstability growth time is of order $T_e$, but can be much larger for systems close to the stability threshold. For low-mass planets undergoing type I (non-gap opening) migration, convergent migration requires $q \lesssim 1$, while the stability of the capture requires $q\gtrsim 1$. These results suggest that planet pairs stably captured into second-order MMRs have comparable masses. This is in contrast to first-order MMRs, where a larger parameter space exists for stable resonance capture. We confirm and extend our analytical results with $N$-body simulations, and show that for overstable capture, the escape time from the MMR can be comparable to the time the planets spend migrating between resonances.

We discuss the renormalization of the initial value problem in Nonequilibrium Quantum Field Theory within a simple, yet instructive, example and show how to obtain a renormalized time evolution for the two-point functions of a scalar field and its conjugate momentum at all times. The scheme we propose is applicable to systems that are initially far from equilibrium and compatible with non-secular approximation schemes which capture thermalization. It is based on Kadanoff-Baym equations for non-Gaussian initial states, complemented by usual vacuum counterterms. We explicitly demonstrate how various cutoff-dependent effects peculiar to nonequilibrium systems, including time-dependent divergences or initial-time singularities, are avoided by taking an initial non-Gaussian three-point vacuum correlation into account.

A downstream common ancestor for haplogroup A and β-haplogroup, coined the α-haplogroup emerged 160,000 ± 12,000 ybp. A territorial origin of haplogroups α- and β-remains unknown; however, the most likely origin for each of them is a vast triangle stretched from Central Europe in the west through the Russian Plain to the east and to Levant to the south. Haplogroup B is descended from β-haplogroup (and not from haplogroup A, from which it is very distant, and separated by as much as 123,000 years of “lat- eral” mutational evolution) likely migrated to Africa after 46,000 ybp. We introduce from an experimental point of view the main concepts of fluctuation theorems for work, heat and entropy production in out of equilibrium systems. We will discuss the important difference between the applications of these concepts to stochastic systems and to a second class of systems (chaotic systems) where the fluctuations are induced either by chaotic flows or by fluctuating driving forces. We will mainly analyze the stochastic systems using the measurements performed in two experiments : a) a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium by an external force b) a colloidal particle trapped in a time dependent double well potential. We will rapidly describe some consequences of fluctuation theorems and some useful applications to the analysis of experimental data. As an example the case of a molecular motor will be analyzed in some details. Finally we will discuss the problems related to the applications of fluctuation theorems to chaotic systems.

We apply the covariant derivative expansion of the Coleman-Weinberg potential to the sfermion sector in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, matching it to the relevant dimension-6 operators in the standard model effective field theory at one-loop level. Emphasis is paid to nondegenerate large soft supersymmetry breaking mass squares, and the most general analytical Wilson coefficients are obtained for all pure bosonic dimension-6 operators. In addition to the non-logarithmic contributions, they generally have another logarithmic contributions. Various numerical results are shown, in particular the constraints in the large $X_t$ branch reproducing the $125$~GeV Higgs mass can be pushed to high values to almost completely probe the low stop mass region at the future FCC-ee experiment, even given the Higgs mass calculation uncertainty.

The virtual automorphism group of the fundamental group of a compact surface (of arbitrary genus $g > 1$) acts by automorphisms on $T_\infty$ as the ``commensurability mapping class group''. Our entire construction is equivariant with respect to this new modular group.

Long standing problem in out-of-equilibrium thermal field theories are pinching singularities. We find that the expressions suspect of pinching require loop particles to be on the mass shell. This fact, with the help of threshold effect and similar effect due to spin, leads to the elimination of pinching in single self-energy insertion approximation to propagator in all propagators appearing in QED and QCD under very mild restrictions on particle densities. This, together with the cancellation of collinear singularities, allows the extraction of useful physical information contained in the imaginary parts of the two loop diagrams. In some cases of interest ($\pi-\rho $ interaction, electro-weak interaction, decay of Higgs particle, ...) none of the mentioned mechanisms works and one has to resort to the resummed Schwinger-Dyson series. These cases are more sensitive to the limitations related to the finite time range.

We study time-dependent electron transport through an Anderson model. The electronic interactions on the impurity site are included via the self-energy approximations at Hartree-Fock (HF), second Born (2B), GW, and T-Matrix level as well as within a time-dependent density functional (TDDFT) scheme based on the adiabatic Bethe-Ansatz local density approximation (ABALDA) for the exchange correlation potential. The Anderson model is driven out of equilibrium by applying a bias to the leads and its nonequilibrium dynamics is determined by real-time propagation. The time-dependent currents and densities are compared to benchmark results obtained with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) method. Many-body perturbation theory beyond HF gives results in close agreement with tDMRG especially within the 2B approximation. We find that the TDDFT approach with the ABALDA approximation produces accurate results for the densities on the impurity site but overestimates the currents. This problem is found to have its origin in an overestimation of the lead densities which indicates that the exchange correlation potential must attain nonzero values in the leads.

These connections are based on an infrastructure of language teaching and learning that involves research, theory, classroom practice, activities, and events. Over the past fifty years the profession has undergone enormous changes brought about by new research in second language acquisition as well as new directions in language teaching and learning. Once isolated from other disciplines, world languages now reaches out to them and incorporates them into the curriculum and into daily classroom activities. Furthermore, e-mail and the internet have added vast new dimensions to language teaching repertoire, enabling teachers to reach out to the global community in ways they were unable to previously. The articles are divided in sections that reflect and elaborate on the concept of making connections: (1) Making Connections to Program; (2) Making Connections to Research; (3) Making Connections to the Classroom; and (4) Making Connections to the Classroom and Beyond.

We propose a density functional theory of Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizs\"acker type to describe the response of a single layer of graphene resting on a dielectric substrate to a point charge or a collection of charges some distance away from the layer. We formulate a variational setting in which the proposed energy functional admits minimizers, both in the case of free graphene layers and under back-gating. We further provide conditions under which those minimizers are unique and correspond to configurations consisting of inhomogeneous density profiles of charge carrier of only one type. The associated Euler-Lagrange equation for the charge density is also obtained, and uniqueness, regularity and decay of the minimizers are proved under general conditions. In addition, a bifurcation from zero to non-zero response at a finite threshold value of the external charge is proved.

The basic theory and equations have been derived to describe the radiation characteristics of a wideband CW or pulsed antenna from measured near-field data and to describe the electromagnetic coupling characteristics of a near-field, cosited pair of wideband CW or pulsed antennas. The theory and equations are applicable for both in-band and out-of-band situations and for stochastic as well as deterministic processes. Numerical simulations have been conducted to validate the analytical results and gain insight into the general behavior of the radiation and coupling characteristics of CW antennas. (Author)

The ongoing scientific interest in the properties and structure of electric double layers (EDLs) stems from their pivotal role in (super)capacitive energy storage, energy harvesting, and water treatment technologies. Classical density functional theory (DFT) is a promising framework for the study of the in- and out-of-plane structural properties of double layers. Supported by molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate the adequate performance of DFT for analyzing charge layering in the EDL perpendicular to the electrodes. We discuss charge storage and capacitance of the EDL and the impact of screening due to dielectric solvents. We further calculate, for the first time, the in-plane structure of the EDL within the framework of DFT. While our out-of-plane results already hint at structural in-plane transitions inside the EDL, which have been observed recently in simulations and experiments, our DFT approach performs poorly in predicting in-plane structure in comparison to simulations. However, our findings isolate fundamental issues in the theoretical description of the EDL within the primitive model and point towards limitations in the performance of DFT in describing the out-of-plane structure of the EDL at high concentrations and potentials.

I discuss the relationship between edge exponents in the statistics of work done, dynamical phase transitions, and the role of different kinds of excitations appearing when a non-equilibrium protocol is performed on a closed, gapped, one-dimensional system. I show that the edge exponent in the probability density function of the work is insensitive to the presence of interactions and can take only one of three values: +1/2, -1/2 and -3/2. It also turns out that there is an interesting interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking or the presence of bound states and the exponents. For instantaneous global protocols, I find that the presence of the one-particle channel creates dynamical phase transitions in the time evolution.

We examined sensitivity and specificity when using the three theory of planned behavior (TPB) scales (Perceived Behavioral Control, Subjective Norms, Attitude) to predict graduation and drop-out in a longitudinal study of 252 college and university students with disabilities and in a separate cross-sectional study of a random sample of 1380 junior/community college students. The results (a) show the utility of the TPB in predicting graduation, (b) underscore that when predicting outcome, graduation and drop-out are not polar opposites, and (c) highlight the need to consider sensitivity and specificity separately. We discuss the implications of using different scale cutoffs depending on the goal of testing as well as uses of the TPB scales in research and practice.
