8Unraveling The Nature Of Gravity Through Our Clumpy Universe
By Shant Baghram, Saeed Tavasoli, Farhang Habibi, Roya Mohayaee and Joseph Silk
We propose a new probe to test the nature of gravity at various redshifts through large-scale cosmological observations. We use our void catalog, extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR10), to trace the distribution of matter along the lines of sight to SNe Ia that are selected from the Union 2 catalog. We study the relation between SNe Ia luminosities and convergence and also the peculiar velocities of the sources. We show that the effects, on SNe Ia luminosities, of convergence and of peculiar velocities predicted by the theory of general relativity and theories of modified gravities are different and hence provide a new probe of gravity at various redshifts. We show that the present sparse large-scale data does not allow us to determine any statistically- significant deviation from the theory of general relativity but future more comprehensive surveys should provide us with means for such an exploration.

11The Miracles Of Our Existence - Surf The Waves Of The Universe - The Created Is The Creator
By Kiyoshi Suzaki
Are we stuck like a Bird in a cage - but do not know the door is open to be liberated? Be liberated - as the Laws of Universe are Manifesting Everywhere. For example, light coming through the curtain as my (mind) eyes are open ... To see creator and created being one... Eye of Eckhart - observer and observed (Also, Krishnamurti, or even Myokonin - possibly more profound...) It is as it is. Kio PS I recorded this around July 20 in the middle of my recovering from Covid. Since then, I had several more recordings done with the last one: "Appreciation of life...": https://youtu.be/1-htHLESE_0 which I found had a strong connection to what I said in this video.

14Brian Greene, "Until The End Of Time: Mind, Matter, And Our Search For Meaning In An Evolving Universe" (Random House, 2020)
By New Books in Native American Studies
Brian Greene is a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Columbia University in the City of New York, where he is the Director of the Institute for Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics, and co-founder and chair of the World Science Festival. He is well known for his TV mini-series about string theory and the nature of reality, including the Elegant Universe, which tied in with his best-selling 2000 book of the same name. In this episode, we talk about his latest popular book Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe (Random House, 2020)Until the End of Time gives the reader a theory of everything, both in the sense of a \"state of the academic union\", covering cosmology and evolution, consciousness and computation, and art and religion, and in the sense of showing us a way to apprehend the often existentially challenging subject matter. Greene uses evocative autobiographical vignettes in the book to personalize his famously lucid and accessible explanations, and we discuss these episodes further in the interview. Greene also reiterates his arguments for embedding a form of spiritual reverie within the multiple naturalistic descriptions of reality that different areas of human knowledge have so far produced.John Weston is a University Teacher of English in the Language Centre at Aalto University, Finland. His research focuses on academic communication. He can be reached at [email protected] and @johnwphd. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

16How Does The Hubble Sphere Limit Our View Of The Universe?
By Geraint F. Lewis and Pim van Oirschot
It has recently been claimed that the Hubble Sphere represents a previously unknown limit to our view of the universe, with light we detect today coming from a proper distance less than this "Cosmic Horizon" at the present time. By considering the paths of light rays in several cosmologies, we show that this claim is not generally true. In particular, in cosmologies dominated by phantom energy (with an equation of state of \omega < -1) the proper distance to the Hubble Sphere decreases, and light rays can cross it more than once in both directions; such behaviour further diminishes the claim that the Hubble Sphere is a fundamental, but unrecognised, horizon in the universe.

17Stellar Populations In Dwarf Galaxies: A Review Of The Contribution Of HST To Our Understanding Of The Nearby Universe
By Eline Tolstoy
This review aims to give an overview of the contribution of the Hubble Space Telescope to our understanding of the detailed properties of Local Group dwarf galaxies and their older stellar populations. The exquisite stable high spatial resolution combined with photometric accuracy of images from the Hubble Space Telescope have allowed us to probe further back into the history of star formation of a large variety of different galaxy types with widely differing star formation properties. We have learnt several important things about dwarf galaxy evolution from these studies. Firstly we have found that no two galaxies have identical star formation histories; some galaxies may superficially look the same today, but they have invariably followed different paths to this point. Now that we have managed to probe deep into the star formation history of dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group it is obvious that there are a number of similarities with the global properties of dwarf elliptical/spheroidal type galaxies, which were previously thought to be quite distinct. The previous strong dichotomy between these two classes has been weakened by these new results and may stem from the differences in the environment in which these similar mass galaxies were born into or have inhabited for most of their lives. The more detailed is our understanding of star formation processes and their effect on galaxy evolution in the nearby Universe the better we will understand the results from studies of the integrated light of galaxies in the high-redshift Universe.

19Homily For The Solemnity Of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King Of The Universe | November 24th, 2024 | John 18:33b-37 | Fr. James Dorman
By St. Rita Catholic Church Dallas
John 18:33b-37 Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?" Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

27Is Our Universe Decaying At An Astronomical Rate?
By Don N. Page
Unless our universe is decaying at an astronomical rate (i.e., on the present cosmological timescale of Gigayears, rather than on the quantum recurrence timescale of googolplexes), it would apparently produce an infinite number of observers per comoving volume by thermal or vacuum fluctuations (Boltzmann brains). If the number of ordinary observers per comoving volume is finite, this scenario seems to imply zero likelihood for us to be ordinary observers and minuscule likelihoods for our actual observations. Hence, our observations suggest that this scenario is incorrect and that perhaps our universe is decaying at an astronomical rate.

30The Universe, Life And Everything...Dialogues On Our Changing Understanding Of Reality
The way we understand the world we live in is changing. Our traditional understanding is being challenged by developments in physics, including quantum mechanics, and our inability to explain certain complex phenomena such as consciousness. In this book, scholars from a variety of backgrounds discuss how our understanding of our world is expanding to include such phenomena.

32How Flat Is Our Universe Really?
By P. M. Okouma, Y. Fantaye and B. A. Bassett
Distance measurement provide no constraints on curvature independent of assumptions about the dark energy, raising the question, how flat is our Universe if we make no such assumptions? Allowing for general evolution of the dark energy equation of state with 20 free parameters that are allowed to cross the phantom divide, w(z) = -1, we show that while it is indeed possible to match the first peak in the Cosmic Microwave Background with non-flat models and arbitrary Hubble constant, H_0, the full WMAP7 and supernova data alone imply -0.12 < \Omega_k < 0.01 (2\sigma). If we add an H_0 prior, this tightens significantly to \Omega_k = 0.002 \pm 0.009 . These constitute the most conservative and model-independent constraints on curvature available today, and illustrate that the curvature-dynamics degeneracy is broken by current data, with a key role played by the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect rather than the distance to the surface of last scattering. If one imposes a quintessence prior on the dark energy (-1 \leq w(z) \leq 1) then just the WMAP7 and supernova data alone force the Universe to near flatness: \Omega_k = 0.013 \pm 0.012. Finally, allowing for curvature, we find that all datasets are consistent with a Harrison-Zel'dovich spectral index, n_s = 1, at 2\sigma, illustrating the interplay between early and late-universe constraints.

34Man And The Universe : A Study Of The Influence Of The Advance In Scientific Knowledge Upon Our Understanding Of Christianity
By Lodge, Oliver, Sir, 1851-1940
If one imposes a quintessence prior on the dark energy (-1 \leq w(z) \leq 1) then just the WMAP7 and supernova data alone force the Universe to near flatness: \Omega_k = 0.013 \pm 0.012. 35Self-similar Cosmologies In 5D: Our Universe As A Topological Separation From An Empty 5D Minkowski Space
By J. Ponce de Leon
In this paper we find the most general self-similar, homogeneous and isotropic, Ricci flat cosmologies in 5D. These cosmologies show a number of interesting features: (i) the field equations allow a complete integration in terms of one arbitrary function of the similarity variable, and a free parameter; (ii) the three-dimensional spatial surfaces are flat; (iii) the extra dimension is spacelike; (iv) the general solution is Riemann-flat in 5D but curved in 4D, which means that an observer confined to 4D spacetime can relate this curvature to the presence of matter, as determined by the Einstein equations in 4D. We show that these cosmologies can be interpreted, or used, as 5D Riemann-flat embeddings for spatially-flat FRW cosmologies in 4D. In this interpretation our universe arises as a topological separation from an empty 5D Minkowski space, as envisioned by Zeldovich.

NSF's new Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2022-2026 was released on March 28, 2022. To achieve NSF's vision of "A nation that leads the world in science and engineering research and innovation, to the benefit of all, without barriers to participation," the Plan lays out four strategic goals. The first, "Empower STEM talent to fully participate in science and engineering," aims to accelerate the advancement of discovery and learning and, in a world in which work is increasingly reliant upon scientific and technological skills, ensure that all citizens share in the benefits that flow from research. NSF will promote inclusion in the research community and STEM workforce, access to STEM learning and training, and widespread STEM literacy. The second strategic goal, "Create new knowledge about our universe, our world and ourselves," aims to advance knowledge through investments in ideas, people, and infrastructure, and to advance the practice of research. The third strategic goal, "Benefit society by translating knowledge into solutions," focuses on delivering benefits from research by advancing discovery and accelerating innovation that address societal challenges, as well as cultivating a global S&E community based on shared values and strategic cooperation. The fourth goal, "Excel at NSF operations and management," includes strategies to attract, retain, and empower a talented and diverse workforce and continually to improve agency operations. NSF's new Strategic Plan lays out a vision for accelerating research and innovation. The Plan includes examples of discoveries that NSF-supported researchers have made, and the impacts these have had on the Nation's economy and well-being. It also includes examples of exciting new opportunities for research at the frontiers of science and engineering. With the support of the American people, NSF-funded researchers will continue to transform the world with their ingenuity and creativity, providing new knowledge and innovations that will propel our economy and enhance our lives.
