1Requirements Problem And Solution Concepts For Adaptive Systems Engineering, And Their Relationship To Mathematical Optimisation, Decision Analysis, And Expected Utility Theory

By

Requirements Engineering (RE) focuses on eliciting, modelling, and analyzing the requirements and environment of a system-to-be in order to design its specification. The design of the specification, usually called the Requirements Problem (RP), is a complex problem solving task, as it involves, for each new system-to-be, the discovery and exploration of, and decision making in, new and ill-defined problem and solution spaces. The default RP in RE is to design a specification of the system-to-be which (i) is consistent with given requirements and conditions of its environment, and (ii) together with environment conditions satisfies requirements. This paper (i) shows that the Requirements Problem for Adaptive Systems (RPAS) is different from, and is not a subclass of the default RP, (ii) gives a formal definition of RPAS, and (iii) discusses implications for future research.

4There, And Back Again: Quantum Theory And Global Optimisation

By

We consider a problem in quantum theory that can be formulated as an optimisation problem and present a global optimisation algorithm for solving it, the foundation of which relies in turn on a theorem from quantum theory. To wit, we consider the maximal output purity $\nu_q$ of a quantum channel as measured by Schatten $q$-norms, for integer $q$. This quantity is of fundamental importance in the study of quantum channel capacities in quantum information theory. To calculate $\nu_q$ one has to solve a non-convex optimisation problem that typically exhibits local optima. We show that this particular problem can be approximated to arbitrary precision by an eigenvalue problem over a larger matrix space, thereby circumventing the problem of local optima. The mathematical proof behind this algorithm relies on the Quantum de Finetti theorem, which is a theorem used in the study of the foundations of quantum theory. We expect that the approach presented here can be generalised and will turn out to be applicable to a larger class of global optimisation problems. We also present some preliminary numerical results, showing that, at least for small problem sizes, the present approach is practically realisable.

5Random Matrix Theory And Fund Of Funds Portfolio Optimisation

By

The proprietary nature of Hedge Fund investing means that it is common practise for managers to release minimal information about their returns. The construction of a Fund of Hedge Funds portfolio requires a correlation matrix which often has to be estimated using a relatively small sample of monthly returns data which induces noise. In this paper random matrix theory (RMT) is applied to a cross-correlation matrix C, constructed using hedge fund returns data. The analysis reveals a number of eigenvalues that deviate from the spectrum suggested by RMT. The components of the deviating eigenvectors are found to correspond to distinct groups of strategies that are applied by hedge fund managers. The Inverse Participation ratio is used to quantify the number of components that participate in each eigenvector. Finally, the correlation matrix is cleaned by separating the noisy part from the non-noisy part of C. This technique is found to greatly reduce the difference between the predicted and realised risk of a portfolio, leading to an improved risk profile for a fund of hedge funds.

6Accurate Ionic Forces And Geometry Optimisation In Linear Scaling Density-functional Theory With Local Orbitals

By

Linear scaling methods for density-functional theory (DFT) simulations are formulated in terms of localised orbitals in real-space, rather than the delocalised eigenstates of conventional approaches. In local-orbital methods, relative to conventional DFT, desirable properties can be lost to some extent, such as the translational invariance of the total energy of a system with respect to small displacements and the smoothness of the potential energy surface. This has repercussions for calculating accurate ionic forces and geometries. In this work we present results from \textsc{onetep}, our linear scaling method based on localised orbitals in real-space. The use of psinc functions for the underlying basis set and on-the-fly optimisation of the localised orbitals results in smooth potential energy surfaces that are consistent with ionic forces calculated using the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. This enables accurate geometry optimisation to be performed. Results for surface reconstructions in silicon are presented, along with three example systems demonstrating the performance of a quasi-Newton geometry optimisation algorithm: an organic zwitterion, a point defect in an ionic crystal, and a semiconductor nanostructure.

7Shape Optimisation With Nonsmooth Cost Functions: From Theory To Numerics

By

This paper is concerned with the study of a class of nonsmooth cost functions subject to a quasi-linear PDE in Lipschitz domains in dimension two. We derive the Eulerian semi-derivative of the cost function by employing the averaged adjoint approach and maximal elliptic regularity. Furthermore we characterise stationary points and show how to compute steepest descent direc- tions theoretically and practically. Finally, we present some numerical results for a simple toy problem and compare them with the smooth case. We also compare the convergence rates and obtain higher rates in the nonsmooth case.

8An Algebraic Theory Of Complexity For Discrete Optimisation

By

Discrete optimisation problems arise in many different areas and are studied under many different names. In many such problems the quantity to be optimised can be expressed as a sum of functions of a restricted form. Here we present a unifying theory of complexity for problems of this kind. We show that the complexity of a finite-domain discrete optimisation problem is determined by certain algebraic properties of the objective function, which we call weighted polymorphisms. We define a Galois connection between sets of rational-valued functions and sets of weighted polymorphisms and show how the closed sets of this Galois connection can be characterised. These results provide a new approach to studying the complexity of discrete optimisation. We use this approach to identify certain maximal tractable subproblems of the general problem, and hence derive a complete classification of complexity for the Boolean case.

9Duality Theory For Portfolio Optimisation Under Transaction Costs

By

For portfolio optimisation under proportional transaction costs, we provide a duality theory for general cadlag price processes. In this setting, we prove the existence of a dual optimiser as well as a shadow price process in a generalised sense. This shadow price is defined via a "sandwiched" process consisting of a predictable and an optional strong supermartingale and pertains to all strategies which remain solvent under transaction costs. We provide examples showing that in the present general setting the shadow price process has to be of this generalised form.

11Using Marketing Theory To Inform Strategies For Recruitment: A Recruitment Optimisation Model And The Txt2stop Experience.

By

This article is from Trials , volume 15 . Abstract Background: Recruitment is a major challenge for many trials; just over half reach their targets and almost a third resort to grant extensions. The economic and societal implications of this shortcoming are significant. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the processes that increase the probability that recruitment targets will be achieved. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to bring analytical rigour to the task of improving recruitment, thereby increasing the likelihood that trials reach their recruitment targets. This paper presents a conceptual framework that can be used to improve recruitment to clinical trials. Methods: Using a case-study approach, we reviewed the range of initiatives that had been undertaken to improve recruitment in the txt2stop trial using qualitative (semi-structured interviews with the principal investigator) and quantitative (recruitment) data analysis. Later, the txt2stop recruitment practices were compared to a previous model of marketing a trial and to key constructs in social marketing theory. Results: Post hoc, we developed a recruitment optimisation model to serve as a conceptual framework to improve recruitment to clinical trials. A core premise of the model is that improving recruitment needs to be an iterative, learning process. The model describes three essential activities: i) recruitment phase monitoring, ii) marketing research, and iii) the evaluation of current performance. We describe the initiatives undertaken by the txt2stop trial and the results achieved, as an example of the use of the model. Conclusions: Further research should explore the impact of adopting the recruitment optimisation model when applied to other trials.

12DTIC ADP010514: An Optimal Control Theory Based Algorithm To Solve 2D Aerodynamic Shape Optimisation Problems For Inviscid And Viscous Flows

By

With the capacity of today's computers; one can envisage the resolution of shape optimization problems in aerodynamics. Nevertheless, optimization methods require many evaluations of different aerodynamic configurations, and so are much more expensive than a single analysis. It is therefore mandatory to find methods that evaluate aerodynamic functions and their gradient at the lowest possible computational cost; as well as fast and robust optimization methods.

1Esperanto Teacher

By

Book's cover

The international language Esperanto was first released to the world in 1887, when L. L. Zamenhof published his first book, "Dr. Esperanto's International Language". Since that time, many learning books have been developed to help the beginner attain a proficiency in the language. Helen Fryer's "Esperanto Teacher" is one of the earliest of these attempts in English. Divided into 45 short and easy lessons and supplemented with sections on joining words, exclamations, compound words, arrangement of words in a sentence, words used with the object, the 16 rules of grammar and list of common useful expressions, as well as a number of translated texts for the new Esperantist to practice his/her skills, this book contains everything one needs to gain a proficiency in the language.

3Mary Frances Story Book

By

Book's cover

The Mary Frances Story Book is different from the other Mary Frances Books. They are part lessons and part story; they teach something about cooking and sewing, knitting and crocheting, housekeeping and gardening, and first-aid—and tell a story, too; but The Mary Frances Story Book is all story. On a summer afternoon Mary Frances took a holiday and sailed away across the blue water to an island—an island formed by the top of a coral mountain resting in a sea of blue; oh, so blue—a brighter blue than the water in your mother’s bluing tub—not the blue that makes you feel sad and blue, but the blue that makes you laugh with happiness. The island itself and the roofs of the houses were coral white, and the green was the green of the palm and banana and mahogany tree. The breezes that blew over them were the warm, soft breezes of the southern sun. This island was the “enchanted island” of the good story-tellers which Mary Frances was allowed to visit. The story people who lived there believed in truth and beauty, and courage and kindness, and these were the theme of their stories. Like all good islands, this island had enemies, but they came to a bad end, as, in the long run, all evil persons will; and truth and beauty, and courage and kindness won the day, as they always must in every land where the searchlight of the sun flashes its beams. As may be imagined, when Mary Frances came home she had not only one, but many stories to tell; and they are written in this book. - Summary by From the Preface
