The political context is shaped by distinctions between in-groups and out-groups. According to Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1986), group membership fundamentally influences perception and behavior. These groups are subjectively constructed through social categorization based on shared behaviors, attitudes, affiliations, or other perceived commonalities (Turner, 2010). Social comparisons between in-groups and out-groups are often inevitable and typically favour the In-Group (Rivera et al., 2024). Such comparisons serve to maintain or enhance self-esteem (Turner, 1978). Empirical research has demonstrated that individuals evaluate candidates from their own political party more positively and regard their policy positions as superior to others (Mößner, 2005). Moreover, perceiving others as group members rather than individuals may offer cognitive advantages by reducing complexity through stereotyping. This effect may be particularly beneficial for individuals with low Tolerance of Ambiguity (ToA), who often experience difficulty processing ambiguous or complex information. This study examines how participants describe five political targets as a function of their political alignment. Two types of targets will be assessed: A) A prototypical voter of each party, based on participants’ subjective interpretation. B) Specific politicians currently elected to the German federal parliament. The five parties vary in terms of conservatism vs. progressiveness. Conservatism and progressiveness (or liberalism, in some contexts) are often conceptualized as bipolar ideological orientations reflecting preferences for stability vs. change, hierarchy vs. equality, and tradition vs. reform (Jost et al., 2003). From conservative to progressive, these parties are the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), Christlich Demokratische Union (CDU/CSU), Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschland (SPD), Die Grünen (Greens), DIE LINKE (The Left). We don’t use the term “liberal”, as liberal is understood differently in an American (more closely associated with progressive values) than in a German political context (more closely associated with capitalist and free market values) (e.g. Goldfarb, 2010). Participants will provide two types of descriptions: - Free association: Participants will list 3 to 10 descriptors (adjectives) to describe each target. - Short Adjective Rating List (SARL): A set of descriptors, pre-rated for agency, communion, and HEXACO traits, as well as known values for abstractness, traitness, and social desirability (see Methods). This is a short version of the Evaluative Adjective Rating List (https://osf.io/9pzwv/) Each participant will be randomly assigned to describe either voters or politicians. Prior to the description task, they will rate their likelihood of voting for each party. These ratings will be used to compute an index of Political Ingroup Alignment (PIA), as described below. We assume that there are significant differences between the descriptions of the In-Group and Out-Group, regarding social desirability, abstractness and traitness of descriptors(Leistner et al., 2025). We expect significant differences in the descriptions of In-Group versus Out-Group targets with respect to the social desirability, abstractness, and traitness of descriptors (Leistner et al., 2025). (see Hypotheses) Social desirability denotes the extent to which the use of a descriptor to describe a person sheds a positive light on that person (Edwards, 1953). Abstractness pertains to the breadth of different behaviors that are relevant to describing persons with a descriptor (Burgoon et al., 2013; Della Rosa et al., 2010; Hampson, et al., 1986; John et al., 1994; Mõttus et al., 2017). Traitness concerns the extent to which the use of a descriptor implies a claim that the referenced behaviors are stable over time (Bleidorn et al., 2012; Wood & Wortmann, 2011). Participants' Tolerance of Ambiguity will be assessed with the short German version of the MAAS-21 by Lauriola et al. (2016) (Steger & Schütz, 2023). ToA refers to the ability to manage contradictory or ambiguous information, a frequent feature of political discourse. We aim to test whether individuals with lower ToA describe political targets in more stereotypical terms. Three subdimensions will be assessed: Moral Absolutism, Discomfort with Ambiguity, Need for Complexity. Particular focus will be placed on traits along the dimensions of agency (e.g., competence, assertiveness) and communion (e.g., warmth, morality), as outlined in the Stereotype Content Model (Fiske et al., 2002; Fiske, 2019). These dimensions are central to social perception and especially relevant in political contexts. We will also assess sociodemographic variables. Affective polarization - the degree to which individuals feel warmer toward in-groups than out-groups (i.e. like them more) - will also be assessed. This will be measured using a feeling thermometer, following the standard approach of the American National Election Studies (ANES; Iyengar et al., 2019). Lastly, the dataset may be used for future Multilevel Profile Analysis (MPA). While the present research focuses on why individuals attribute specific descriptors to political targets, MPA seeks to explain why there is consensus about those attributions. Should MPA-related hypotheses be pursued, a separate preregistration will be submitted prior to analysis.

In the wake of this week's terror attack at Turkey's Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, the presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump calls for the U.S. to once again implement torture policies such as waterboarding, despite the fact that it is recognized across the world as a war crime. In the meantime, new polling shows Trump's support outside of the U.S. is dismal, often in single digits, while back here at home, he remains in a close race nationally with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Clinton's favorability ratings also remain dismal, although not as bad as Trump's.  Yet, as Bernie Sanders supporters begin to coalesce around Clinton, representatives for the two rivals hash out the party's official platform document to be voted on by delegates at the Democratic National Convention in July. Salon political reporter Ben Norton joins us to discuss progress of the talks, the Clinton camp's refusal to allow a demand for a federal $15/hour minimum wage in the non-binding party manifesto, and the refusal by Clinton surrogates to agree to more progressive language on everything from Israel to fracking. Norton argues that the conflict suggests the Democratic Party, ultimately, cannot be reformed from within, and that it will require candidates at the local level to take up the fight, perhaps under a completely different party name.  Finally,  more calls for 'Texit'! And California announces that an initiative to allow the recreational use and sale of marijuana will be on the statewide ballot this November...

This study investigates how victim attitude responses (neutral vs. negative) influence third-party punishment decisions, using EEG and computational modeling. The goal is to understand the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie third-party punishment when victim feedback is incorporated. The EEG experiment aims to clarify the neural indicators of different victim attitudes (neutral vs. negative) under fair and unfair conditions, while the behavioral replication experiment seeks to replicate the behavioral results observed in the EEG study. Importantly, the study combines utility models to explore how parameters change in different attitude contexts, providing insights into the underlying psychological mechanisms.

In this study we are interested in what drives support for movement parties. With this objective, we will employ a choice-based conjoint experimental design (Hainmueller, Hopkins, and Yamamoto 2014; Leeper, Hobolt, and Tilley 2020), where respondents will be asked to make a forced choice, binary selection between one of two hypothetical candidates for entering the national parliament and to rate these candidates on a scale from 1 to 7. Each respondent will be presented with 5 tasks of this type. Candidates’ profiles will contain information about their previous experience in institutional and extra-institutional politics as well as policy positions on some of the most salient issues.

This study investigates how third-party judgments about the promissory content of a message may influence behavior in a trust game which gives a Trustee the opportunity to send a message to a Trustor prior to game play. Charness and Dufwenberg (2006) found that such messages can increase both trusting and trustworthy behavior when the message contained a “promise” as evaluated in the data analysis phase by the authors. In our study, anonymous third-parties characterized as a community evaluate messages with a unanimity decision rule comparable to a jury and this evaluation is shared with the Trustor and Trustee prior to game play. Specifically, we examine whether an individual (trustor) is more likely to place trust in another individual (trustee) when the trustee’s message is evaluated by members of a community to reach the threshold of a promise, rather than a non-promise. Additionally, we test whether Trustees are more likely to take a personally costly action that benefits the Trustor when their message is judged by the community to contain a promise.

In 1993, the Queensland, Australia, Board of Teacher Registration established a working party to consider the preparation of teachers for working with young adolescents. This report from the working party summarizes the educational needs of young Australian adolescents, the preparation of teachers for working with these students, and the possible need for new programs to prepare these teachers. Part 1 of the report, "Introduction," discusses the developmental and educational needs of early adolescents. Part 2, "The Project: History and Process," summarizes a previous Issues Paper highlighting the special needs of early adolescents, the social context of adolescence in Queensland, the need for innovative educational approaches to enhance learning outcomes, and implications for teacher education; discusses reactions to the Issues Paper; and describes a conference for key representatives of relevant stakeholder groups to develop recommendations concerning preservice and inservice teacher education. Part 3, "Outcomes," presents the vision emerging from the conference and its implications for schools, curriculum, and systems. Part 4, "Recommendations for Teacher Education," outlines recommendations for preservice and inservice programs for teachers of young adolescents. It is recommended that preservice programs be developed to prepare prospective teachers to work with young adolescents and that all preservice programs for primary, secondary, and special school teachers incorporate study of early adolescence. Specific inservice education should be provided for current teachers working with or interested in working with young adolescents, and cooperative professional development opportunities and research and support networks should be available. Thousands of jubilant supporters attended a campaign rally for Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza and his CNDD-FDD party in Cibitoke Province on July 17, in what is expected to be one of his last public appearances ahead of Tuesday’s controversial election. Nkurunziza has been pushing ahead with his controversial bid for a third term — despite pressure from regional leaders, the international community, months of deadly violence in the capital of Bujumbura, and an aborted coup d’etat led by the his former ally, Godefroid Niyombare. VICE News attended the rally, and spoke with a former high-ranking official of Burundi’s ruling party, who is now living in exile in Rwanda.
