1On Jets, Extensions And Characteristic Classes II

By

In this paper we define and study generalized Atiyah classes for quasi coherent sheaves relative to arbitrary morphisms of schemes. We use derivations and quasi coherent sheaves of left and right O-modules to define a generalized first order jet bundle J(E) and a generalized Atiyah sequence for E. The generalized jet bundle J(E) is a left and right module over a sheaf J of associative rings on X. The sheaf J is an extension of O with a sheaf I of two sided ideals of square zero. The Atiyah sequence gives rise to a generalized Atiyah class c(E) with the property that c(E)=0 if and only if the left structure on J(E) is O-isomorphic to the right structure on J(E). We give examples where c(E)=0 and c(E)\neq 0 hence the class c(E) is a non trivial characteristic class.

2On Localizations Of The Characteristic Classes Of L-adic Sheaves And Conductor Formula In Characteristic P>0

By

The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula calculates the l-adic Euler-Poincare number of an l-adic sheaf on a curve by an invariant produced by the wild ramification of the l-adic sheaf named Swan class. A. Abbes, K. Kato and T. Saito generalize this formula to any dimensional scheme. In this paper, assuming the strong resolution of singularities we prove a localized version of a formula proved by A. Abbes and T. Saito using the characteristic class of an l-adic sheaf. As an application, we prove a conductor formula in equal characteristic.

6On Uniqueness Of Characteristic Classes

By

We give an axiomatic characterization of maps from algebraic K-theory. The results apply to a class of maps from algebraic K-theory to any suitable cohomology theory or to algebraic K-theory, which includes all group morphisms. In particular, we obtain comparison theorems for the Chern character and Chern classes and for the Lambda and Adams operations on higher algebraic K-theory. We show that the Adams operations defined by Grayson agree with the ones defined by Gillet and Soule.

In this paper we give general definitions of non-commutative jets in the local and global situation using square zero extensions and derivations. We study the functors Exank(A, I) where A is any k-algebra and I is any left and right A-module and use this to relate affine non-commutative jets to liftings of modules. We also study the Kodaira-Spencer class KS(L) and relate it to the Atiyah class.

8Cycle Classes On The Moduli Of K3 Surfaces In Positive Characteristic

By

This paper provides explicit closed formulas in terms of tautological classes for the cycle classes of the height and Artin invariant strata in families of K3 surfaces. The proof is uniform for all strata and uses a flag space as the computations in [arXiv:math/0412272] for the Ekedahl-Oort strata for families of abelian varieties, but employs a Pieri formula formula to determine the push down to the base space.

10A Note On The Characteristic Classes Of Negatively Curved Manifolds

By

We give conceptual proofs of some well known results concerning compact non-positively curved locally symmetric spaces. We discuss vanishing and non-vanishing of Pontrjagin numbers and Euler characteristics for these locally symmetric spaces. We also establish vanishing results for Stiefel-Whitney numbers of (finite covers of) the Gromov-Thurston examples of negatively curved manifolds. We mention some geometric corollaries: the MinVol question, a lower bound for degrees of covers having tangential maps to the non-negatively curved duals, and estimates for the complexity of some representations of certain uniform lattices.

11Characteristic Classes Of The Hilbert Schemes Of Points On Non-compact Simply-connected Surfaces

By

We prove a closed formula expressing any multiplicative characteristic class evaluated on the tangent bundle of the Hilbert schemes of points on a non-compact simply-connected surface. As a corollary, we deduce a closed formula for the Chern character of the tangent bundles of these Hilbert schemes. We also give a closed formula for the multiplicative characteristic classes of the tautological bundles associated to a line bundle on the surface. We finally remark which implications the results here have for the Hilbert schemes of points of an arbitrary surface.

12On The Geometric Nature Of Characteristic Classes Of Surface Bundles

By

Each Morita--Mumford--Miller (MMM) class e_n assigns to each genus g >= 2 surface bundle S_g -> E^{2n+2} -> M^{2n} an integer e_n^#(E -> M) := in Z. We prove that when n is odd the number e_n^#(E -> M) depends only on the diffeomorphism type of E, not on g, M, or the map E -> M. More generally, we prove that e_n^#(E -> M) depends only on the cobordism class of E. Recent work of Hatcher implies that this stronger statement is false when n is even. If E -> M is a holomorphic fibering of complex manifolds, we show that for every n the number e_n^#(E -> M) only depends on the complex cobordism type of E. We give a general procedure to construct manifolds fibering as surface bundles in multiple ways, providing infinitely many examples to which our theorems apply. As an application of our results we give a new proof of the rational case of a recent theorem of Giansiracusa--Tillmann that the odd MMM classes e_{2i-1} vanish for any surface bundle which bounds a handlebody bundle. We show how the MMM classes can be seen as obstructions to low-genus fiberings. Finally, we discuss a number of open questions that arise from this work.

13On Kontsevich's Characteristic Classes For Smooth 5- And 7-dimensional Homology Sphere Bundles

By

M. Kontsevich constructed universal characteristic classes of smooth bundles with fiber a framed odd-dimensional integral homology sphere. In dimension 3, they are known to give a universal finite type invariants of homology 3-spheres. However, they have not been well understood for higher fiber dimensions. The purpose of the present paper is twofold. First, we obtain a bordism invariant of smooth unframed bundles with fiber a 5-dimensional homology sphere, which is defined as a sum of the simplest Kontsevich class and the second signature defect. It may be in some sense a higher dimensional analogue of the Casson invariant. Second, we construct a family of M-bundles. By evaluating on those M-bundles, we show that Kontsevich's universal characteristic classes are highly non-trivial in the case of fiber dimension 7. As a corollary, new estimates for unstable rational homotopy groups of Diff(D^7,\partial D^7) are obtained.

14On The Bott-Chern Characteristic Classes For Coherent Sheaves

By

Using the concept of a cohesive module defined by Block, we use the theory of superconnections in the sense of Quillen to construct natural superconnections on Hermitian cohesive modules. By the Chern-Weil construction, we obtain characteristic classes with values in Bott-Chern cohomology which refines the usual deRham cohomology. The main result of this paper shows that such characteristic classes are independent of the Hermitian metric and only dependent on the homotopy class of the cohesive module in the homotopy category. This extends the Bott-Chern cohomology to the bounded derived category of complexes of analytic sheaves with coherent cohomology. We also constructed secondary Bott-Chern characteristic forms and the main technical theorem proves that they are well defined.

15The Characteristic Classes Of Morita Equivalent Star Products On Symplectic Manifolds

By

In this paper we give a complete characterization of Morita equivalent star products on symplectic manifolds in terms of their characteristic classes: two star products $\star$ and $\star'$ on $(M,\omega)$ are Morita equivalent if and only if there exists a symplectomorphism $\psi:M\longrightarrow M$ such that the relative class $t(\star,\psi^*(\star'))$ is $2 \pi \im$-integral. For star products on cotangent bundles, we show that this integrality condition is related to Dirac's quantization condition for magnetic charges.

17Universal Formulas For Characteristic Classes On The Hilbert Schemes Of Points On Surfaces

By

This article can be seen as a sequel to the first author's article ``Chern classes of the tangent bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane'', where he calculates the total Chern class of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane by proving a result on the existence of certain universal formulas expressing characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes in term of Nakajima's creation operators. The purpose of this work is (at least) two-fold. First of all, we clarify the notion of ``universality'' of certain formulas about the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes by defining a universal algebra of creation operators. This helps us to reformulate and extend a lot of the first author's previous results in a very precise manner. Secondly, we are able to extend the previously found results by showing how to calculate any characteristic class of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane in terms of the creation operators. In particular, we have included the calculation of the total Segre class and the square root of the Todd class. Using this methods, we have also found a way to calculate any characteristic class of any tautological sheaf on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane. This in fact gives another complete description of the ring structure of the cohomology spaces of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane.

18On Sheets Of Conjugacy Classes In Good Characteristic

By

We show that the sheets for a connected reductive algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field in good characteristic acting on itself by conjugation are in bijection with G-conjugacy classes of triples (M, Z(M)^\circ t, O) where M is the connected centralizer of a semisimple element in G, Z(M)^\circ t is a suitable coset in Z(M)/Z(M)^\circ and O is a rigid unipotent conjugacy class in M. Any semisimple element is contained in a unique sheet S and S corresponds to a triple with O={1}. The sheets in G containing a unipotent conjugacy class are precisely those corresponding to triples for which M is a Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup of G and such a class is unique.

19On Foliated Characteristic Classes Of Transversally Symplectic Foliations

By

Kotschick and Morita recently discovered factorisations of characteristic classes of transversally symplectic foliations that yield new characteristic classes in foliated cohomology. We describe an alternative construction of such factorisations and construct examples of topologically trivial foliated vector bundles for which these characteristic classes are non-trivial. This shows that the foliated cohomology classes of Kotschick and Morita carry information that is not merely topological.

20Characteristic Classes Of Star Products On Marsden-Weinstein Reduced Symplectic Manifolds

By

In this note we consider a quantum reduction scheme in deformation quantization on symplectic manifolds proposed by Bordemann, Herbig and Waldmann based on BRST cohomology. We explicitly construct the induced map on equivalence classes of star products which will turn out to be an analogue to the Kirwan map but in the Cartan model of equivariant cohomology. As a byproduct we shall see that every star product on a (suitable) reduced manifold is equivalent to a reduced star product.

25Equivariant Prequantization Bundles On The Space Of Connections And Characteristic Classes

By

We show how characteristic classes determine equivariant prequantization bundles over the space of connections on a principal bundle. These bundles are shown to generalize the Chern-Simons line bundles to arbitrary dimensions. Our result applies to arbitrary bundles, and it is studied the action of both the gauge group and the automorphisms group. The action of the elements in the connected component of the identity of the group is computed explicitly, and generalizes known results in the literature. The action of the elements not connected with the identity is shown to be determined by a characteristic class using differential characters and equivariant cohomology.

26On Localizations Of Characteristic Classes Of L-adic Sheaves Of Rank 1

By

The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula is generalized to any dimensional scheme by Abbes-Kato-Saito. In this paper, we introduce two methods of localization of the characteristic classes for sheaves of rank 1 and compare them. As a corollary of this comparison, we obtain a refinement of a formula proved by Abbes-Saito without denominator for a smooth sheaf of rank 1 which is clean with respect to the boundary.

27Secondary Characteristic Classes On Loop Spaces

By

A Riemannian metric on a manifold M induces a family of Riemannian metrics on the loop space LM depending on a Sobolev space parameter s. The connection and curvature forms of these metrics take values in pseudodifferential operators. We develop a theory of Wodzicki-Chern-Simons classes using the s=0, 1 connections and the Wodzicki residue. These classes distinguish the smooth homotopy type of some circle actions on M = S^2 x S^3, and imply that the fundamental group of Diff(M) is infinite.

28Characteristic Classes And Hilbert-Poincar\'e Series For Perverse Sheaves On Abelian Varieties

By

The convolution powers of a perverse sheaf on an abelian variety define an interesting family of branched local systems whose geometry is still poorly understood. We show that the generating series for their generic rank is a rational function of a very simple shape and that a similar result holds for the symmetric convolution powers. We also give formulae for other Schur functors in terms of characteristic classes on the dual abelian variety, and as an example we discuss the case of Prym-Tjurin varieties.

29Characteristic Classes On Grassmann Manifolds

By

In this paper, we use characteristic classes of the canonical vector bundles and the Poincar\' {e} dualality to study the structure of the real homology and cohomology groups of oriented Grassmann manifold $G(k, n)$. Show that for $k=2$ or $n\leq 8$, the cohomology groups $H^*(G(k,n),{\bf R})$ are generated by the first Pontrjagin class, the Euler classes of the canonical vector bundles. In these cases, the Poincar\' {e} dualality: $H^q(G(k,n),{\bf R}) \to H_{k(n-k)-q}(G(k,n),{\bf R})$ can be given explicitly.
