Previous studies show positive correlations between boredom and aggression at a trait level, but little research is done into the direct (i.e. causal) effect of boredom on aggression. The current online study aims to examine whether boredom leads to both reactive (provoked) and proactive (unprovoked) forms of aggression. This meta-synthesis is on research conducted by different researchers in a team research project on learners' experience of aggression in secondary schools in South Africa. The objective was to obtain a broader understanding of their experience of aggression in different contexts in South Africa, as well as possible ways to assist learners to address the experienced aggression. Eleven completed research projects were purposively sampled. Data were collected utilising the following headings: objectives, sampling, research design, research method, and research results, and guidelines. At the end of the meta-synthesis process the results are described, with supporting direct quotations from participants and a literature control. Guidelines for learners to cope with aggression are described.

Female subjects in this study were induced to harm another person in an alleged "learning" study by administering aversive noise to a confederate-victim as she performed a problem-solving task. The subjects consisted of forty-six female undergraduates enrolled in Introductory Psychology at the University of Toronto. They were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions comprising a 2 x 2 factorial design. Two hypotheses were initially entertained. First, choosing to agress may create greater personal responsibility for the aggressor than nonvoluntary aggression. The second hypothesis assumed that choice may primarily sensitize an aggressor to situational norms concerning aggression. If so, choice may curtail unprovoked aggression primarily when it is situationally defined as being socially undesirable. The results of this study clearly disconfirmed these initial hypotheses concerning the effects of choice upon aggression. In conclusion, this study suggested that in general, portraying harming another as being socially undesirable tends to inhibit the amount of unprovoked interpersonal aggression. (Author/BW)

A discussion about Russia's aggression against Ukraine, in the past and at present, brought together the team of the "Mr. Jones" film including director Agnieszka Holland, actor James Norton and screenwriter Andrea Chalupa and the Kyiv Independent's deputy chief editor Toma Istomina and CFO Jakub Parusinski on March 11. The charity event attracted nearly 300 viewers and raised $20,000. which will be equally divided between Proliska, a humanitarian charity in Donbas, and the Kyiv Independent. Abstract Background: The concept of ward culture has been proposed as a reason for the often reported differences in treatment decisions when managing inpatient aggression. We therefore studied whether staff on wards actually shares similar perceptions and attitudes about aggression and whether the specialty of the ward on which the staff members work influences these opinions. Methods: The Attitudes Towards Aggression Scale was used to assess attitudes towards aggression in 31 closed psychiatric wards. Altogether 487 staff members working on the study wards were asked to fill in the scale. Respondent’s gender, age, educational level, working experience on the current ward, and specialty of this ward (acute, forensic, rehabilitation) served as background variables. Results: Most of the variance found was due to differences between individuals. Belonging to the personnel of a particular ward did not explain much of the variance. Conclusions: Psychiatric staff on the wards does not share attitudes on aggression. As each staff member has his/her own opinion about aggression, training for dealing with aggression or violent incidents should be done, at least partly, on an individual level. We also suggest caution in using the concept of ward culture as an explanation for the use of restrictive measures on psychiatric wards.

Recent studies have examined the effects of vaccine misinformation, which is often spread through social media, on vaccine hesitancy. Few studies, however, have sought to understand the factors that shape support for anti-vax activists. Given the rise in anti-vaccine activism, including protest events, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we investigate these factors in this project. Our study relies on both observational and experimental evidence. With respect to the former, we link various individual psycho-social factors to attitudes regarding activist groups that spread (mis)information about COVID-19 vaccines. These factors include political ideology, psychological reactance, authoritarian attitudes, and pre-existing beliefs about vaccine risks. In addition, we develop a survey experiment administered to more than 5000 respondents in the US and the UK to assess how variations in the framing of anti-vax protest events shapes respondents’ attitudes about similar groups. Specifically, we randomly assign respondents to similar vignettes about a hypothetical anti-vaccine protest that vary in terms of the level of conflict at the event and which party (protesters or police) was described as the primary aggressor.

This research is comprised of two studies designed to explore the effects of online discussion forum aggressive messages and Internet cognitive distortion on users' negative affect and aggression. The results of study 1 revealed 69 users could perceive both disgust and hostility feelings toward aggressive messages conducted by the authors, and classify them into three levels: direct aggression, indirect aggression, and disagreement. Study 2 focused on whether three aggressive messages and Internet cognitive distortion had effects on users' negative affect and online aggression. 359 users read one of messages conducted in study 1, and then finished online questionnaires. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in aggression across interaction between aggressive messages and cognitive distortion. However, in users with high cognitive distortion there was significant reported higher aggression than users with low cognitive distortion. Though users could classify the aggressive level of messages and their negative affect be aroused during the treatment, their aggression was not evoked after reading aggressive messages. High cognitive distortion users' aggression and negative affect were triggered without reading aggressive messages. (Contains 4 tables.)

Many forms of peer aggression are referred to as "bullying" by students, parents and adults, and this can be a source of confusion in schools. The main purpose of this study is to explore the circumstances under which students characterize peer aggression as "bullying" incidents. A secondary goal is to examine the feelings students have about the effectiveness of reporting peer aggression to adults. Both objectives are intended to reveal information that will enhance communication about peer aggression and bullying between students and adults. Six focus groups with 54 students in grades three through eight were conducted. The groups were organized in patterns based on grade level and gender, and qualitative methods were used to analyze the results. The findings showed that although the students defined bullying in ways that are similar to the criteria in the literature, they chose different words to describe them. Younger students also expressed greater faith in the ability of adults to respond effectively to bullying situations. Older students preferred to confront a bully with equal force or to reason with a bully to stop the aggression.

Previous work demonstrated that victim’s displays of suffering reduce aggression. In series of studies ran by Eder et al. (2020), participants engaged in a reaction time task with several other players. In particular, participants were able to observe rivals' emotional reactions to their punishment through an allegedly live video feed. Upon seeing the rival suffering (i.e., clenching teeth, shutting eyes, furrowing eyebrows), participants reduced their aggression against their rival relative to seeing him in anger, sadness or calmness. It is argued that sadists hurt others to inflict pain as they enjoy the suffering of others (Buckels et al., 2013). In this vein, sadistic individuals should increase their aggression after seeing the target in distress and potentially reduce their aggression when seeing the target enjoying the inflicted harm. Previous work showed that sadists report feeling good while acting aggressively towards others and this pleasure depends on the perceived suffering of the target of their aggression (Chester et al., 2018). Specifically, participants interacted with another (fictious) player in a competitive reaction time task. Depending upon the victim’s suffering condition, participants received the feedback from the fictious opponent that their aggressive behavior has caused them pain (“Those noise blasts were unbearable! They were so loud they gave me a migraine!”) or not (“Those noise blasts were nothing! Mostly, they were just annoying.”). Participants then reported their current levels of positive affect that lingered after their aggressive act. However, participants did not see opponent’s emotional displays following their aggression – they received the feedback after interacting with the opponent. As such, it is unclear how visual suffering feedback would alter their aggressive actions. This experiment will address these limitations and provide evidence whether (and in which direction) different emotional displays of targets alter aggression among sadists. Unlike in previous studies (Chester et al., 2018; Eder et al., 2020), this study uses disgusting stimuli (instead of noise blasts) as an indicator of aggression.

The Tripartite Aggression on Egypt Book

This article presents the results of a public attitude survey of a quota sample of approximately 4,000 age 18 and older Canadians, in which respondents were asked to express their opinion on who should own and operate professional athletics, national and international amateur athletics, and school/amateur sport. Attitude was also assessed on what form school/amateur sport should take, i.e., athletic excellence or socializing sport. The perception of TV athletic aggression upon family members and responsibility for controlling level of TV athletic aggression was also assessed. Approximately three-quarters of the respondents felt that professional athletic teams should be owned and operated by some form of private enterprise, while the remainder felt that this was the government's responsibility (21 percent) or had no opinion (four percent). Responsibility for ownership and operation of national/international amateur athletics was viewed mainly as the responsibility of the government, with only 18 percent attributing responsibility to private enterprise. In terms of organizing and paying for school/amateur youth sport, about half of the respondents saw this as a government responsibility, one-quarter as an amateur athletic organization responsibility, and 14 percent as a school responsibility. The overwhelming majority of the respondents favored socializing sport as opposed to athletic excellence. Over 50 percent of the respondents felt that TV little affected themselves or their family members, in respect of athletic aggression. When questioned on responsibility for regulating the aggressiveness of TV athletics, 70 percent indicated athletic organization responsibility, with the remainder split between government, network, and combined responsibility.
