The association, founded in 1975 by senior CIA covert operator David Phillips (Cuba, 1960; Brazil, 1964; Chile, 1973), appears to be having a vintage year after five years of sour grapes. Membership has increased tenfold from an original 250 to 2600 former CIA, FBI, and military intelligence agents and officers, and this year, for the first time, corporate membership has been solicited and enthusiastically received (5600 a year gets a company three free memberships). Lockheed was first in line. A marked departure from earlier years, when the more prominent brethren were busy ducking subpoenas or television network crews, the mood at this year's convention was both joyous and combative, apparently thanks to the bracing Cold War tingle in the air and the solid prospects for new laws making it a crime to disclose the name of a CIA officer learned from publicly available sources. This year's convention of spies found cause for joy in every corner. Key "anti-Ct.-1" liberals Frank Church, George McGovern, Birch Bayh, and John Culver were in deep trouble in their reelection bids (and went on to lose). The Supreme Court had grabbed Frank Snepp's "ill-gotten gains" from Decent Interval hack for thegovernment. The Congress had repealed the Clark Amend- ment prohibiting covert intervention in Africa on the side ofapartheid and had retreated from its early promise to write a strong CIA and FBI charter. As former CIA intelligence chief and present Reagan adviser Ray Clint crowed to the assembled CIA, FBI, and military men, "We are on the upgrade at last." A series of sharp exchanges at the conference is instructive. On Friday, October 3, a panel on Soviet Bloc intelligence operations unveiled its star performer, the former chief of "disinformation" for Czech intelligence, Ladis- lav Bittman. Chaired by Ray Cline, the panel sought to draw out of Bittman a pattern ofomnipotent KGB and Eastern Bloc efforts to recruit \`estern joumaI- ists and plant false information in the press. The issue is important. In recent months, the devil theory of international I relations has made a big comeback. The Soviet Union is said to be not merely throwing its weight around and protecting its vital interests, like any other great power; it is evil unto itself. A corollary to this grand design is the apparently fashionable view that Russian "moles" have burrowed into the loose fabric of American life, poking, climbing, and chewing their way into the highest echelons of the U.S. press and the intelligence community itself. Thus, an editorialist's support for human rights cannot merely be a sensitive response to much of the world's state-organized cruelty; it has to be "proof' ofseduction by Soviet intelligence's "false flag" technique of wooing liberals to communist aims. I explore the current ability of both white dwarf cooling theory and main sequence stellar evolution theory to accurately determine stellar population ages by comparing ages derived using both techniques for open clusters ranging from 0.1 to 4 Gyr. I find good agreement between white dwarf and main sequence evolutionary ages over the entire age range currently available for study. I also find that directly comparing main sequence turn-off ages to white dwarf ages is only weakly sensitive to realistic levels of errors in cluster distance, metallicity, and reddening. Additional detailed comparisons between white dwarf and main sequence ages have tremendous potential to refine and calibrate both of these important clocks, and I present new simulations of promising open cluster targets. The most demanding requirement for these white dwarf studies are very deep (V > 25-28) cluster observations made necessary by the faintness of the oldest white dwarfs.

This paper presents a sensitive and comprehensive IRAC 3-8 $\mu$m photometric survey of white dwarfs for companions in the planetary mass regime with temperatures cooler than the known T dwarfs. The search focuses on descendents of intermediate mass stars with $M\ga3$ $M_{\odot}$ whose inner, few hundred AU regions cannot be probed effectively for massive planets and brown dwarfs by any alternative existing method. Furthermore, examination for mid-infrared excess explores an extensive range of orbital semimajor axes, including the intermediate 5-50 AU range poorly covered and incompletely accessible by other techniques at main sequence or evolved stars. Three samples of white dwarfs are chosen which together represent relatively young as well as older populations of stars: 9 open cluster white dwarfs, 22 high mass field white dwarfs, and 17 metal-rich field white dwarfs. In particular, these targets include: 7 Hyads and 4 field white dwarfs of similar age; 1 Pleiad and 19 field white dwarfs of similar age; van Maanen 2 and 16 similarly metal-rich white dwarfs with ages between 1 and 7 Gyr. No substellar companion candidates were identified at any star. By demanding a 15% minimum photometric excess at 4.5 $\mu$m to indicate a companion detection, upper limits in the planetary mass regime are established at 34 of the sample white dwarfs, 20 of which have limits below 10 $M_{\rm J}$ according to substellar cooling models. Specifically, limits below the minimum mass for deuterium burning are established at all Pleiades and Hyadeswhite dwarfs, as well as similarly young field white dwarfs, half a dozen of which receive limits at or below 5 $M_{\rm J}$. Two IRAC epochs at vMa 2 rule out $T\ga200$ K proper motion companions within 1200 AU.
