In this paper, the problem of energy efficiency in cellular heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is investigated using radio resource and power management combined with the base station (BS) ON/OFF switching. The objective is to minimize the total power consumption of the network while satisfying the quality of service (QoS) requirements of each connected user. We consider the case of co-existing macrocell BS, small cell BSs, and private femtocell access points (FAPs). Three different network scenarios are investigated, depending on the status of the FAPs, i.e., HetNets without FAPs, HetNets with closed FAPs, and HetNets with semi-closed FAPs. A unified framework is proposed to simultaneously allocate spectrum resources to users in an energy efficient manner and switch off redundant small cell BSs. The high complexity dual decomposition technique is employed to achieve optimal solutions for the problem. A low complexity iterative algorithm is also proposed and its performances are compared to those of the optimal technique. The particularly interesting case of semi-closed FAPs, in which the FAPs accept to serve external users, achieves the highest energy efficiency due to increased degrees of freedom. In this paper, a cooperation scheme between FAPs and mobile operator is also investigated. The incentives for FAPs, e.g., renewable energy sharing and roaming prices, enabling cooperation are discussed to be considered as a useful guideline for inter-operator agreements.

The co-existence of small cell base stations (SBSs) with conventional macrocell base station is a promising approach to boost the capacity and coverage of cellular networks. However, densifying the network with a viral deployment of SBSs can significantly increase energy consumption. To reduce the reliance on unsustainable energy sources, one can adopt self-powered SBSs that rely solely on energy harvesting. Due to the uncertainty of energy arrival and the finite capacity of energy storage systems, self-powered SBSs must smartly optimize their ON and OFF schedule. In this paper, the problem of ON/OFF scheduling of self-powered SBSs is studied, in the presence of energy harvesting uncertainty with the goal of minimizing the operational costs consisted of energy consumption and transmission delay of a network. For the original problem, we show an algorithm can solve the problem in the illustrative case. To reduce the complexity of the original problem, an approximation is proposed. To solve the approximated problem, a novel approach based on the ski rental framework, a powerful online optimization tool, is proposed. Using this approach, each SBS can effectively decide on its ON/OFF schedule autonomously, without any prior information on future energy arrivals. By using competitive analysis, a deterministic online algorithm (DOA) and a randomized online algorithm (ROA) are developed. ROA is shown to achieve the optimal competitive ratio in the approximation problem. Simulation results show that, compared to a baseline approach, the ROA can yield performance gains reaching up to 15.6% in terms of reduced total energy consumption of SBSs and up to 20.6% in terms of per-SBS network delay reduction. The results shed light on the fundamental aspects that impact the ON time of SBSs while demonstrating that the proposed ROA can reduce up to 69.9% the total cost compared to a baseline approach.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal base station (BS) ON-OFF switching and user association in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) with massive MIMO, with the objective to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE). The joint BS ON-OFF switching and user association problem is formulated as an integer programming problem. We first develop a centralized scheme, in which we relax the integer constraints and employ a series of Lagrangian dual methods that transform the original problem into a standard linear programming (LP) problem. Due to the special structure of the LP, we prove that the optimal solution to the relaxed LP is also feasible and optimal to the original problem. We then propose a distributed scheme by formulating a repeated bidding game for users and BS's, and prove that the game converges to a Nash Equilibrium (NE). Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed schemes can achieve considerable gains in EE over several benchmark schemes in all the scenarios considered.

An investigation was conducted in a 12.5-meter-diameter vacuum sphere to determine the impingement loads due to air jets issuing from and perpendicular to a circular base and reflecting off a square platform, that is, a simulation of rendezvous maneuvering, docking, launch, impact dampers etc. The nozzles had exit Mach numbers of 1, 3, 5, and 7. The ambient pressures were 0.0006, 5, 225, and 760 torr. Under near-field separation distances and at 0.0006 torr, reflections were significant; and ratios of the impingement force to thrust on both plates in the biplane arrangement varied from about 750 for exit Mach number 1 to 120 for exit Mach number 7. The far-field force ratios were near unity for the platform and zero for the base and indicated few, if any, reflections. Some reversals and rapid changes in loads were obtained at transition distances between the near and far fields. In general, increasing the exit Mach number or ambient pressure reduced the impingement loads.

An add-on part for Transformers: Titans Return toys with base modes, which I designed for my Shapeways shop. This is a sloped piece that attaches to the ends of the bases' connecting ramps when they aren't being used to connect to other bases, so that they don't appear to end so abruptly.

I needed a means to remind myself during games that I had artillery available off the gaming board. It can fit up to a 15mm scale miniature, and has a recess to hold a d6 up to 12mm in size. This way you will know what artillery type is a available (the miniature), and how many guns/tubes (the d6) that are associated with that off table asset. In the provided pictures, the FV432(m) is 10mm scale, and the M109 is 15mm.

Forward-deployed maneuver sustainment operations, such as Forward Arming and Refueling Points (FARPs), are a critical center of gravity that adversaries seek to disrupt or destroy in order to jeopardize friendly scheme of maneuver and operations. With adversaries’ increased ability to attack such operating bases through indirect fire and infiltration, it becomes more difficult for perimeter defense assets to maintain situational awareness in order to respond to threats. A low-cost wireless sensor network composed of Raspberry Pi nodes equipped with short-range radars, cameras, and motion sensors was built to give force protection personnel early warning and to help them maintain situational awareness. While each layer alone had flaws, deployment of the wireless network of sensor nodes using the defense in depth principle proved capable of not only providing early warning to defenders, but also giving defenders detailed imagery and kinetic information on the intruder.

DOD now relies on the communities near military installations as the primary source of housing for military personnel. It is increasingly important to know the availability of adequate community housing for this reason. DOD developed a survey procedure to determine the availability and gave it to the Navy to administer. The Army built on this system and formulated an analysis procedure to select the best alternative for providing housing when the community had insufficient assets. Both systems are currently under revision to address deficiencies found in the original methods. This study investigates the present methods and the proposed changes in order to build a better method than is currently available. The study concludes by outlining a new system which builds on the strengths of the present systems and addresses deficiencies in those methods.

United States policy requires that access to and dissemination of classified information be controlled. Separate networks and workstations for each classification do not meet user requirements. Users also need commercially available office productivity tools. Traditional multilevel systems are costly and are unable support an evolving suite of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) applications. This thesis presents a design for a Trusted Computing Base Extension (TCBE) that allows COTS workstations to function securely as part of a multilevel network that uses high assurance multilevel servers as the backbone. The TCBE will allow COTS workstations to use commercially available software applications, while providing a Trusted Path to a high assurance multilevel server. The research resulted in a design of a TCBE system that can be employed with COTS workstations, allowing them to function as untrusted clients in the context of a secure multilevel network.
