1Using An Object-oriented Database Management System To Enhance The Reusability Of Class Definitions

By

One of the main benefits of object-orientation is reusability which allows modules (classes/objects) developed for a previous application to be used again for a new application. A Browser in objected-oriented systems is a highly specialized system used in class libraries for viewing, writing, changing, and saving code. However, as the number of classes grows from the hundreds to the tens of thousands, the Browser approach is not sufficient. The Class Storage and Retrieval System (CSRS) is a proposed system based on the Computer-aided Prototyping System that aims to overcome the insufficiencies of the Bowser approach and therefore enhance the reusability of classes in object-oriented systems.

2DTIC ADA296539: Re-Engineering A Relational Database System To Produce A Prototype Object-Oriented Geophysical Database System.

By

This document provides a description of (1) the design and development ot a prototype object-oriented geophysical database system, and (2) the development of a reengineering process for mapping from an existing relational database to an object-oriented database. Although it is widely recognized that the object-oriented approach has many advantages over traditional relational technology for scientific databases, one cannot ignore the large investments that have been made in existing relational databases. The re- engineering process described in this document provides a systematic method for (1) mapping from an existing relational schema to an object-oriented schema and for (2) mapping the actual data from the relational database into an object-oriented database. 3DTIC ADA378406: Knowledge Discovery In An Object-Oriented Oceanographic Database System

By

The rate at which scientific data is collected today has overwhelmed the ability of scientists to store and analyze the data. This report describes the results of a three year effort in the development of a knowledge discovery system for use by oceanographers at the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) at the Stennis Space Center in the identification of provinces of interest in the ocean floor from acoustic imagery. The system is composed of a knowledge discovery component built to interact with a database system currently in use at Stennis Space Center. The knowledge discovery system applies machine learning techniques to features extracted from sonar images to identify provinces of the ocean floor based on visual texture. This requires that the images be segmented into regions of homogeneous texture using a region-growing technique, that features describing the texture of these regions be extracted, that machine learning techniques be applied to classify the regions, that classified images be constructed for visualizing the results, and that the classified images be combined and geo-referenced using a mosaic procedure. NAVOCEANO is currently supporting efforts to integrate the software developed from this project with their image analysis system.

4DTIC ADA224610: Object-Oriented Database Manager For The Low Cost Combat Direction System

By

A modern Combat Direction System (CDS) must have the capacity to perform real-time processing of tactical data from more than twenty interfaces. These include multiple tracking sensors, multiple weapons interfaces, electronic warfare, and multiple tactical data link systems. Efficient processing and display requirements in such sophisticated systems have greatly increased the development cost of fielding new systems. The Navy wishes to develop a Low Cost Combat Direction System (LCCDS) which could be installed on non-combatant ships or could augment the processing capability on ships currently equipped with CDS systems. During the initial portion of Increment One of the LCCDS project, a suitable object-oriented database management system (OODBMS) must be chosen to form the basis for the remainder of the project. The goal of this thesis is to determine the feasibility of using a commercially available OODBMS. Evaluation of three systems shows that GemStone, a product of Servio Logic Corporation, Alameda, CA, best fits the requirements of this project. Keywords: Theses; Naval tactical data systems; Management information systems; Computer systems.

5DTIC ADA243788: Design And Application Of An Object Oriented Graphical Database Management System For Synthetic Environments

By

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is investigating the use of synthetic environments for military applications under the sponsorship of Rome Laboratories (RL). Areas under investigation include mission planning, battle management and flight simulation. The work reported in this thesis focuses on the object-oriented design and implementation of the Graphical Database Management System (GDMS) used to support research in these areas. GDMS provides the data structures, file format and algorithms to manage and render hierarchical, three-dimensional, polygonal models. Flexibility and adaptability were key factors in its design. A secondary objective of this research was to demonstrate the functionality of GDMS through the development of a characteristic application. This led to the design and implementation of a Database Generation System (DBGen) for the construction and manipulation of synthetic environments. DBGen allows a user to orient, scale, move, delete and add multi-resolution objects to synthetic environment interactively. It also provides a real time fly-through capability for immediate feedback on the dynamic response of the database. The development of the Graphical Database Management System was successful. The design and implementation of four major synthetic environment applications based on GDMS tested its flexibility, while the rapid incorporation of a number of special effects algorithms in final stages of the development cycle demonstrated its adaptability. The development of the Database Generation System was also successful. In addition to providing an excellent platform for testing GDMS functionality, it proved to be an effective tool for placing 3-D objects on terrain.

6DTIC ADA391602: Using A Distributed Object-Oriented Database Management System In Support Of A High-Speed Network Intrusion Detection System Data Repository

By

The Air Force has multiple initiatives to develop data repositories for high-speed network intrusion detection systems (IDS). All of the developed systems utilize a relational database management system (RDBMS) as the primary data storage mechanism. The purpose of this thesis is to replace the RDBMS in one such system developed by AFRL, the Automated Intrusion Detection Environment (AIDE), with a distributed object-oriented database management system (DOODBMS) and observe a number of areas: its performance against the RDBMS in terms of IDS event insertion and retrieval, the distributed aspects of the new system, and the resulting object-oriented architecture. The resulting system, the Object-Oriented Automated Intrusion Detection Environment (OOAIDE), is designed, built, and tested using the DOODBMS Objectivity/DE. Initial tests indicate that the new system is remarkably faster than the original system in terms of event insertion. Object retrievals are also faster when more than one association is used in the query. The database is then replicated and distributed across a simple heterogeneous network with preliminary tests indicating no loss of performance. A standardized object model is also resented that can accommodate an IDS data repository built around a DOODBMS architecture.

7DTIC ADA306136: Supporting The Object-Oriented Database On The Kernel Database System.

By

If a single operating system can support multitudes of different programming languages and data structures, a database system can support a variety of data models and data languages. In this thesis, a Kernel Database System (KDS) supporting classical data models and data languages (i.e., hierarchical, network, relational, and functional) is used to support a demonstration object oriented data model and data language. This thesis extends previous research by accommodating an object-oriented-data-model-and-language interface in the KDS. Consequently, the research shows that it is feasible to use the KDS to support modem data models and languages as well as classical ones. This thesis details the KDS design, Insert operation, and Display function. This thesis also details how to implement modifications to the Test-Interface so that the KDS can support the object-oriented database. This thesis proves complex data structures in an object-oriented data model can be realized using an attribute-based data model which is the kernel data model of the KDS. Second, it details how the KDS is designed showing why no changes needed to be made to the KDS to implement the object-oriented toy database. Third, it argues the advantages of using a KDS in the database-system design. The KDS design produces savings in costs from compatability, reduced training, expandability, and software reuse.

8DTIC ADA412527: A Universal Object-Oriented Medical Database System

By

The paper presents and discusses a universal client/server object-oriented patient database system for clinical and personal applications. The developed system makes it possible to manage all patient specific data in the unified way by means of object-oriented representation of heterogeneous medical data, which include patient details, examination results and doctor visits history. The presented implementation includes a database server and a universal client application, which serves as a container for manifold medical applications that require database services. This approach enables to simplify drastically the implementation of database support in client applications and to put the main computational burden on the container application, which communicates with its clients by means of defined interface protocols.

10A Relational/object-oriented Database Management System: R/OODBMS

By

During the last decade, the business sector has become increasingly reliant upon information management. This trend will most likely continue. Deficiencies/constraints in conventional database management systems continue to become more apparent as this reliance continues to grow. Primary areas of deficiency are in modeling, storing, and managing increasingly complex information as in Cad and CASE among other, The purpose of this thesis is to implement a combined relational/object-oriented database management system that will overcome these deficiencies/constraints. three possible approaches to such a system exist: build the system from scratch, build object-oriented capabilities on top of an existing relational system, or build relational capabilities on top of an existing object-oriented system. The last one is the one chosen for this work. This thesis expands previous work in this area and uses a commercial object-oriented database management system, IDB, in its implementation.

17The Design And Implementation Of An Object-oriented Interface For The Multimodel/multilingual Database System

By

Database designs in today's information-intensive environment, Challenge the database-system user to adhere to strict and somewhat archaic means, i.e., traditional data models and their data languages, of expressing their database applications. In light of these requirements, the user must purchase the new database system that supports the latest data model and its data language. We design and implement a comprehensive data-model-and-data- language interface which is a simple and yet effective alternative to the costly and cumbersome standard method of purchasing o developing a new database system. Our solution is two-fold. First, we use the concept of a data-model-and-data language interface to an existing database system. This not only eliminates the costs associated with building a arate, stand-alone database system to support each new data model and its language, but also allows for resource consolidation and data duplication elimination. Second, using the data-model-and-data-language interface concept, we design and implement an object-oriented-data-model-and- data-language interface for the multimodel/multilingual database system.

The rate at which scientific data is collected today has overwhelmed the ability of scientists to store and analyze the data. Current research in knowledge discovery in databases is addressing this problem by developing techniques that can automatically extract knowledge of interest in a particular problem domain. This report describes the results of the second year's efforts in the development of a knowledge discovery system for use by oceanographers at the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) at the Stennis Space Center in the identification of certain oceanographic features. The system is composed of a knowledge discovery component built to interact with a database system currently in use at Stennis Space Center. The database system will be extended to store metadata and knowledge extracted by the knowledge discovery component. Working with scientists at NAVOCEANO, we determined that the focus of our work is the identification and characterization of regions of sand waves in acoustic imagery data.

19DTIC ADA264911: The Relational-to-Object-Oriented Cross-Model Accessing Capability In A Multi-Model And Multi-Lingual Database System

By

Conventional database management systems (DBMS) are stand-alone, each supporting a single data model and corresponding data language (ML). One organization might operate several stand-alone DBMS independently, each of which requires the knowledge of a different ML to operate. The multi-model and multi- lingual database system offers a different approach. This system supports multiple MLs in a single database system. Thus, a relational database user of the multi-model and multi-lingual database system can create and manipulate a database according to the relational model and the SQL data language. On the same system, a hierarchical user can create and manipulate a database according to the hierarchical model and DL/I data language, and so on. Besides supporting many different models and languages on a single system, the multi-model and multi-lingual database system also allows the user to access a database created according to one ML as if it were created according to another. Thus, a relational user could manipulate a hierarchical database as if it is relational, i.e., the user would use a relational schema and SQL commands to manipulate a hierarchical database. The Cross-model accessing capability, Database design, Database implementation, Database management systems, base-model and base- language (i.e., hierarchical and DL/1) are invisible to the user. This additional capability is termed the cross-model accessing capability At this time the multi-model and multi-lingual database system supports the following MLs: relational and SQL, hierarchical and DL/I, network and CODASYL-DML, and object-oriented and the object-oriented data language. The system also supports a relational-to-hierarchical cross-model accessing capability.

22DTIC ADA269959: Integrated Office Information System (IOIS) Summary Report: An Object- Oriented SEM Design/Maintenance Methodology For An Integrated Knowledge Base/ Database

By

An object-oriented Structured Entity Method (SEM) design and maintenance methodology was completed as partial fulfillment of the February 3, 1989 proposal. Due to the object-oriented nature, the methodology has been renamed the Structured Object Methodology (SOM). SOM provides high level design tools somewhat similar to Entity Relationship Diagrams that, unlike ER Diagrams, are top down and hierarchical. SOM diagrams translate easily into objects that can be coded into a knowledge base. The resulting knowledge base is easier to understand and maintain than conventional knowledge bases with no underlying organization to their rules. As was also suggested in the February 3, 1989 proposal, a prototype of an integrated KB/DB for the IOIS was completed. The prototype fully utilizes SOM and verifies that it is a reasonable design technique. SOM proved to be better suited to the task of integrating a KB/DB than other design techniques that were explored at the same time. A subset of AIRMICS data was modeled using SOM and then entered into a normalized database. Oracle was chosen for the DBMS and the knowledge base was written using PC- Scheme/Scoops, an object-oriented dialect of LISP.

By

During the last decade, the business sector has become increasingly reliant upon information management. This trend will most likely continue. Deficiencies/constraints in conventional database management systems continue to become more apparent as this reliance continues to grow. Primary areas of deficiency are in modeling, storing, and managing increasingly complex information as in CAD and CASE among others. The purpose of this thesis is to implement a combined relational/object-oriented database management system that will overcome these deficiencies/constraints. Three possible approaches to such a system exist: build the system from scratch, build object-oriented capabilities on top of an existing relational system, or build relational capabilities on top of an existing object-oriented system. The last approach is the one chosen for this work. This thesis expands previous work in this area and uses a commercial object-oriented database management system, IDB, in its implemen tation. Database, Relational model, Object-oriented model, Object- oriented programming, Heterogeneous database.

24DTIC ADA243743: An Object-Oriented Database Implementation Of The Magic VLSI Layout Design System

By

This thesis attempts to prove that the commercially available Object Store data management system provide the performance and functionality necessary to support a complex engineering design system. This is accomplished by modifying the Magic VLSI circuit layout design system to eliminate its current Unix file data management system and replace it with Object Store. The approach to this research effort includes a design recovery of the Magic system and identification of its ket data management functions. These functions are then modified to take advantage of the database management facilities of Object Store. Additional code is added to instrument performance measurement of both the original and the Object Store versions of the Magic system. Testing is accomplished using existing Magic commands to test key database performance criteria. The Object Store version of Magic performed better than the original version for some performance criteria and significantly slower than the original version for other criteria. the conversion effort was difficult and time consuming due to the complexity of the original Magic software and the Object Store database management system. A more specific implementation of Object Store capabilities for conclusive results.

Distributed database management systems provide for more flexible and efficient processing. Research in object-oriented database management systems is revealing an abundance of additional benefits that cannot be provided by more traditional database management systems. The Naval Military Personnel Command (NMPC) is used as a case study to evaluate the requirements of transitioning from a centralized to a distributed database management system. Features and characteristics of both distributed and object-oriented database management systems are used to determine the appropriate configuration for different application environments. The distributed and object-oriented concepts are evaluated in detail in order to allow an organization to appropriately select the type of system to meet their needs. Transition requirements for NMPC, in particular, are identified and a suggested plan of action is presented. 32Supporting The Object-oriented Database On The Kernel Database System

The rate at which scientific data is collected today has overwhelmed the ability of scientists to store and analyze the data. Current research in knowledge discovery in databases is addressing this problem by developing techniques that can consider large quantities of data and automatically identify information that is of interest in a particular problem domain. This report describes the results of the first year's efforts in the development of a knowledge discovery system for use by oceanographers at the Naval Oceanographic Office at the Stennis Space Center in the identification of certain oceanographic features. The system consists of two major components: an object-oriented oceanographic database that can support the retrieval of data along various parameters of interest (such as a certain geographic area of a certain date) and a discovery system that can identify the features of interest. During the first year of this project, we (in consultation with the scientists at the Stennis Space Center) named the identification of sand waves in acoustic imagery as the first task to be addressed by our system.
