15NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20040034209: Considering Object Oriented Technology In Aviation Applications

Few developers of commercial aviation software products are using object-oriented technology (OOT), despite its popularity in some other industries. Safety concerns about using OOT in critical applications, uncertainty about how to comply with regulatory requirements, and basic conservatism within the aviation community have been factors behind this caution. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have sponsored research to investigate and workshops to discuss safety and certification concerns about OOT and to develop recommendations for safe use. Two Object Oriented Technology in Aviation (OOTiA) workshops have been held and numerous issues and comments about the effect of OOT features and languages have been collected. This paper gives a high level overview of the OOTiA project, and discusses selected specific results from the March 2003 workshop. In particular, results in the form of questions to consider before making the decision to use OOT are presented.

17An Object-oriented View Of Backend Databases In A Mobile Environment For Navy And Marine Corps Applications

A Database Management System (DBMS) is system software for managing a large amount of data in secondary memory. The standard DBMS used today in both industry and the military is the Relational DBMS (RDBMS). The RDBMS is based upon the relational paradigm, whereas modern software development technologies that interact with the RDBMS are based upon the object-oriented paradigm. This difference in paradigms presents a conceptual mismatch which greatly reduces programmer and developer productivity. Additionally, wireless handheld devices have become ubiquitous both in the military and in the community at large. These handheld devices provide a convenient means of information access. To date, the military has failed to capitalize on the use of handheld devices as a convenient means of information access with respect to the large amounts of information stored in its databases. This thesis investigates various database application architectures and proposes an architecture that will not only overcome the conceptual mismatch between the relational and object-oriented paradigms, but also allows handheld device access to the database. A proof-of-concept prototype database application that provides handheld device access to a military personnel database is built to show the viability of the proposed architecture.

18Object-oriented Languages, Systems And Applications

A Database Management System (DBMS) is system software for managing a large amount of data in secondary memory. The standard DBMS used today in both industry and the military is the Relational DBMS (RDBMS). The RDBMS is based upon the relational paradigm, whereas modern software development technologies that interact with the RDBMS are based upon the object-oriented paradigm. This difference in paradigms presents a conceptual mismatch which greatly reduces programmer and developer productivity. Additionally, wireless handheld devices have become ubiquitous both in the military and in the community at large. These handheld devices provide a convenient means of information access. To date, the military has failed to capitalize on the use of handheld devices as a convenient means of information access with respect to the large amounts of information stored in its databases. This thesis investigates various database application architectures and proposes an architecture that will not only overcome the conceptual mismatch between the relational and object-oriented paradigms, but also allows handheld device access to the database. A proof-of-concept prototype database application that provides handheld device access to a military personnel database is built to show the viability of the proposed architecture.

20DTIC ADA455383: Semantic-Based Concurrency Control For Object-Oriented Database Systems Supporting Real-Time Applications

Recently, object-oriented database technology has started to gain the attention of researchers in real-time database systems. This paper investigates major issues in designing semantic-based concurrency control for object-oriented database systems supporting real-time applications, and it describes approaches to solving these problems in an efficient way. This approach depends on the notion of affected-set of operations to determine operation compatibilities, and it employs concurrency control algorithms augmented with priority-based conflict resolution schemes. With this method, it is impossible to maneuver the tradeoff between logical and temporal consistency constraints in determining operation compatibilities, because the method deals with the two separately in different dimensions. However, this approach significantly lessens the complexity of the compatibility relation construction process, and can easily apply results from previous research on semantic-based concurrency control for object-oriented databases and on priority-based concurrency control for real-time database systems.

Recently, interests in object oriented databases have been growing for nontraditional applications of database systems, and several real time applications are being developed using an object oriented paradigm. The object-oriented approach seems promising for developing complex real-time database applications. However, it is not clear whether object oriented database systems would be superior than relational database systems for supporting real-time applications. In this paper, we address issues that must be investigated in order to design and develop an object oriented database system for realtime applications. Also, we present a model that integrates features for scheduling real-time transactions with the traditional object-oriented database model.

24NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19990062740: Performance Analysis Of Distributed Object-Oriented Applications

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the efficiency of a distributed simulation architecture which creates individual modules which are made self-scheduling through the use of a message-based communication system used for requesting input data from another module which is the source of that data. To make the architecture as general as possible, the message-based communication architecture was implemented using standard remote object architectures (Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and/or Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM)). A series of experiments were run in which different systems are distributed in a variety of ways across multiple computers and the performance evaluated. The experiments were duplicated in each case so that the overhead due to message communication and data transmission can be separated from the time required to actually perform the computational update of a module each iteration. The software used to distribute the modules across multiple computers was developed in the first year of the current grant and was modified considerably to add a message-based communication scheme supported by the DCOM distributed object architecture. The resulting performance was analyzed using a model created during the first year of this grant which predicts the overhead due to CORBA and DCOM remote procedure calls and includes the effects of data passed to and from the remote objects. A report covering the distributed simulation software and the results of the performance experiments has been submitted separately. The above report also discusses possible future work to apply the methodology to dynamically distribute the simulation modules so as to minimize overall computation time.

Dieser war von 1155 an Kanzler des englischen Königs Heinrich II (1133 - 1189). Die Novelle von Meyer gibt die historischen Tatsachen ziemlich genau wieder, mit Ausnahme der Gestalt von Grace, die eine Erfindung des Dichters ist. Thomas wurde bereits 1173 heilig gesprochen. We can never allow the great objective facts of Christianity, and their attendant doctrines, to sink low on our horizon; but we must give equal prominence to the demands of Christ for a righteousness which shall exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, and a perfection which shall resemble that of God. We have no right to be content with saying "Lord, Lord;" we must do the things which He says. <br /><br />Of course, the right kind of obedience is impossible, apart from the Cross and the Spirit. We must be reconciled before we can become obedient children; we must be filled with the Spirit before "the fragrance of Christ" can be manifested through us in every place. The Sermon on the Mount must be read in the transfiguring light which shines backwards from the later events in our Lord's life. <br /><br />When, however, this is borne in mind, each sentence of that marvelous discourse glistens with celestial radiance, and rings with the music of the Gospel. In such a spirit let us address ourselves to the study of the "Directory of the Devout Life," as it is contained in Matt. v., vi., and vii. (from the Preface)<br /><br />F. B.
