The Electronic Warfare Integrated Reprogramming Database (EWIRDB) is the primary Department of Defense (DoD) approved source of electronic warfare (EW) data. Its utilization in the areas of battle planning and EW research enables our military forces to effectively exploit the electromagnetic spectrum and shape the outcome of battle. The EWIRDB, however, lacks a viable conceptual data model. EWIRDB data are represented in disjoint parametric tree models that are implementation-oriented; to the extent that the tree structures are used as conceptual modeling tools, their hierarchical form is too restrictive to adequately describe EW data semantics. Moreover, these structures address only technical parametric data. Associated administrative, reference, and comment data are excluded. In practice, the EWIRDB is described in terms of the coded and record-based format of its output media, not its conceptual model. The primary goal of this thesis is the development of a semantically-improved conceptual design of EWIRDB data based on the object-oriented data model (OODM). The secondary goal of the thesis is the specification of a logical design, based on the new conceptual design, to provide the structure for a subsequent implementation of EWIRDB data on the Multimodel and Multilingual Database System (MDBS) in the Laboratory for Database Systems Research at the Naval Postgraduate School. The results of the work contained herein are: (1) an object-oriented conceptual design of EWIRDB data that supports the semantics of both the file format and tree structures, and (2) the specification of an object-oriented logical design for an M2 DBS implementation of sample EWIRDB data

Updating the finite element model using measured data is a challenging problem in the area of structural dynamics. The model updating process requires not only satisfactory correlations between analytical and experimental results, but also the retention of dynamic properties of structures. Accurate rigid body dynamics are important for flight control system design and aeroelastic trim analysis. Minimizing the difference between analytical and experimental results is a type of optimization problem. In this research, a multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization [MDAO] tool is introduced to optimize the objective function and constraints such that the mass properties, the natural frequencies, and the mode shapes are matched to the target data as well as the mass matrix being orthogonalized.

This paper reports on a study of systems analysis textbooks in terms of topics covered and academic background of the authors. It addresses the consistency within IS curricula with respect to the content of a systems analysis and design course using the object-oriented approach. The research questions addressed were 1: Is there a consistency among Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design Texts. 2: If there is not consistency, are the books technology-oriented, or business process oriented? 3: Is there a relationship between the authors' academic background and the focus of the text? It appears that the author's background is an important consideration--as much as the title and contents--in the selection of an appropriate object oriented textbook for an object oriented systems analysis course. One focus is the application of object oriented systems analysis tools and techniques in conjunction with business process, while the technical focus is on programming technique and process.

Successful application of software engineering methodologies requires an integrated analysis and design life-cycle in which the various phases flow smoothly 'seamlessly' from analysis through design to implementation. Furthermore, different analysis methodologies often lead to different structuring of the system so that the transition from analysis to design may be awkward depending on the design methodology to be used. This is especially important when object-oriented programming is to be used for implementation when the original specification and perhaps high-level design is non-object oriented. Two approaches to real-time systems analysis which can lead to an object-oriented design are contrasted: (1) modeling the system using structured analysis with real-time extensions which emphasizes data and control flows followed by the abstraction of objects where the operations or methods of the objects correspond to processes in the data flow diagrams and then design in terms of these objects; and (2) modeling the system from the beginning as a set of naturally occurring concurrent entities (objects) each having its own time-behavior defined by a set of states and state-transition rules and seamlessly transforming the analysis models into high-level design models. A new concept of a 'real-time systems-analysis object' is introduced and becomes the basic building block of a series of seamlessly-connected models which progress from the object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design system analysis logical models through the physical architectural models and the high-level design stages. The methodology is appropriate to the overall specification including hardware and software modules. In software modules, the systems analysis objects are transformed into software objects.

Saber is a two-sided, air and land war game that simulates decisions made of commanders at the theater-level. It is being developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology for the Air Force Wargaming center at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Saber models conventional, chemical, and nuclear warfare between aggregated air and land forces. It also portrays the effects of logistics, satellites, weather, terrain, and intelligence which add to the realism of the Saber war game. The Saber war game has three main components, the preprocessor. which is responsible for scenario development and pregame activities, the simulation. the guts of the war game that provides execution of missions and conflict resolution, and the postprocessor, which provides detailed reports and an animated graphical output of troop movement. This thesis documents the object-oriented analysis, design and implementation of Saber simulation. During the analysis and design phase, a five step process was used. These steps included identifying the objects along with their attributes and operations and encapsulating them within Ada Packages. During implementation, sound object- oriented principles were used to ensure a system that could be easily understood, modified, and enhanced.

Design reuse has more potential for increasing the productivity of software development and maintenance than do traditional approaches to software reuse that emphasize reuse of smaller components. Current software development methods do not promote design reuse. The literature contains limited documented research on the subject, but enough that some design reuse principles can be gleaned. Among these principles are that reusable designs should be applicable within some domain of application, have a consistent structure, provide a method for instantiating the design, avoid object nesting, and promote reuse of smaller components as well. A design mapping method from an object-oriented requirements analysis to a design that follows the principles of design reuse is presented in this thesis. The mapping method involves two transformation steps and introduces four representation tools for conducting the transformations. These tools are the Object-Mapping Table; the Hierarchical-Structure Diagram, which represents the static structure of the design; the Event-Mapping List; and the Object-Event Interconnection Diagram, a graphical representation of the Event-Mapping list to show the design dynamics. The second step transforms these representations into Ada specifications. Design templates are developed to aid in this transformation. The design method is applied to two problems to demonstrate the consistent designs it produces. The first problem is then carried through to completion to demonstrate its feasibility and ease of implementation.

Current object-oriented analysis and design methodologies fall short in their use of mechanisms for identifying threads of control for the system being developed. The scenarios which typically describe a system are more global than looking at the individual objects and representing their behavior. Unlike conventional methodologies that use data flow and process-dependency diagrams, object-oriented methodologies do not provide a model for representing these global threads end-to-end. Tracing through threads of control is key to ensuring that a system is complete and timing constraints are addressed. The existence of multiple threads of control in a system necessitates a partitioning of the system into processes. This paper describes the application and representation of end-to-end threads of control to the object-oriented analysis and design process using object-oriented constructs. The issue of representation is viewed as a grouping problem, that is, how to group classes/objects at a higher level of abstraction so that the system may be viewed as a whole with both classes/objects and their associated dynamic behavior. Existing object-oriented development methodology techniques are extended by adding design-level constructs termed logical composite classes and process composite classes. Logical composite classes are design-level classes which group classes/objects both logically and by thread of control information. Process composite classes further refine the logical composite class groupings by using process partitioning criteria to produce optimum concurrent execution results. The goal of these design-level constructs is to ultimately provide the basis for a mechanism that can support the creation of process composite classes in an automated way. Using an automated mechanism makes it easier to partition a system into concurrently executing elements that can be run in parallel on multiple processors.
